I bought this laptop for work and after several months of owning it here are my impressions of it.

In terms of external features, this laptop seems to offer a good bit, sporting an HDMI and VGA port, USB 3.0 port, multitouch track pad and a Webcam. Overall, the features are very good for the price you pay for it.

Internal's on this laptop are on par with other budget laptops. Intel Pentium processor, 2-4GB of RAM and Intel integrated graphics wont hold up running AutoCAD or Photoshop very well but handle essential business apps like Outlook, Word and internet browsing just fine. Some apps like VLC can take up to 20 seconds to load but after loading, they run without issue.

Overall construction isn't the best ive ever seen but its certainly not the worst. Laptop manufacturers these days have moved away from making laptops out of tough matte casing that lasts for years to shiny casing that looks good in-store but holds up poorly in day-to-day use. The casing on this laptop skips the gloss but still attracts some fingerprints and the screen is also glossy though a screen protector should fix that. Overall I've found the casing to be better than other budget laptops but still nothing compared to the casing found on proper business laptops (think Dell Precision and HP EliteBook). However you get what you pay for and for the money its not that bad.

The laptop ships with Windows 7 Home Premium and there isn't too much to be said here in terms of features. The laptop is slowed somewhat by bloatware and the 64bit flavor of Windows 7. However if you're willing to get your hands dirty, re-installing Windows in the 32bit flavor and leaving out the bloatware should speed things up considerably.

Overall you get what you pay for. For the money this laptop is one of the best deals on the market and with a few tweaks on the software side, this laptop will be a perfect companion for basic computing tasks.

If, like me, you're a normal person (i.e. NOT a techie) wanting to get the real deal on a low price laptop, this is it.

Before Christmas, I read several dozen reviews before purchasing this laptop. The main thing for me was the price, since none of my laptops have lasted more than 3 years, and my last one (Dell-500.00) only lasted 2yrs. So I was very tempted to buy this ASUS, as it was advertised for $325 around the holidays. I didn't really see very consistent complaints on the various websites I looked at (Best Buy, etc), so took the plunge but now wish that I hadn't.

IT's not that this laptop is terrible. It's not. And it certainly has all the features I really needed: Windows 7, webcam, ok speakers, and good screen size. It also is very light--a real plus. It has good battery life so far, doesn't get hot, and doesn't have the annoying keyboard panel that is so common these days (the side panel with the extra set of numbers on it). From a list of externals, the computer fits the bill.

FYI, it does NOT have an internal CD/DVD drive.

also FYI, the speakers are on the bottom of the computer (where your legs hit), which is not a dealbreaker but weird. Ok volume but makes it kind of muted.

The big down side is the touchpad. It's a dealbreaker. A lot of people complained about odd things concerning the touchpad, like the sensitivity, but that kind of thing is fixable if you know what menu you're looking for. What is not fixable is the actual design of the touchpad. Firstly, the right and left click buttons are not raised or separated from the touchpad itself; nor are they distinguished from one another. There is just a line painted on the pad that divides right from left. This means that it is very awkward to click, select, and drag. It's very easy to delete a whole selection you're highlighting, or right click when you mean to left click. Many times I touch/click and nothing happens at all. So far, after a month, my fingers have still not adjusted to this new set up--and I am having a hard time selecting/dragging, etc, accurately and quickly. It seems like maybe something under the pad does not have the right design/sensitivity because I have never struggled with this kind of thing before, not even on those computers which have the raised dot touchpad in the center of the keyboard. This one is just OFF in a funny way.

Also, it seems like the touchpad is located rather left of center. So if you're left-handed, this may be the touchpad for you. But if you are right handed like me, your right hand has to stretch quite a ways over to click/select.

This is definitely the most annoying feature for me, enough to make me wish I had tried it out in the store first. But I also have had some trouble with audio-visual speed/internet speed/printing speed which may or may not be related to the computer--but I sure didn't have trouble with my previous laptop, nor does anyone else experience it on our other house computers. I think it might be a memory/RAM problem because I cannot watch Netflix (or listen to iTunes) and print/surf at the same time. Lots of delays which, like I said, might be a problem with something else but I wouldn't take the chance.

So, if you're on the fence about this machine like I was, and not able to really interpret other reviews to make a good decision, don't take the plunge just to save the money. Maybe try the cheap Toshiba, which is also around $300, and, while heavy, cumbersome, and ugly, didn't have any of these problems.

I got mines from my local Walmart and it's working good!

It plays both 720p and 1080p Youtube videos FLAWLESSLY. Maybe it's my good connection.

My touchpad is working good so far and if indeed gets damage I have a tiny mouse for backup.

I don't need a cd drive as I have always used Usb hard drives.

The HDMI is wonderful , I play a movie and connect this baby to my tv and its awesome!!!

WARNING: IT COMES WITH A LOT OF BLOATWARE , BUT YOU CAN JUST UNINSTALL BUT LEAVE THE ONE THAT SAYS ASUS RECOVERY ALONE.

I love this lap top. I wanted Windows 7 & this is it. Others said the mouse is too touchy, but there are adjustments built in for the preferred touch. The speakers underneath does hinder the sound. I'm going to purchase an extra speaker, tho.

OKAY now to what I want to say

.....I've been starting to get a few problems with this laptop to the point that I wanted to sell it back, But I found out that the OS *operating system* has been modified for some unknown reason and this causes bugs from the keyboard, to the touchpad..AND I found a way to fix it, which is a simple solution. ALSO this makes your Laptop MUCH FASTER...

If you're planning to get this laptop I recommend to buy a 4 gb usb drive and download Windows 7 usb/dvd download tool and burn a Windows 7 Home premium 32/64 bit, ((depending on your Laptop)) ISO file to the Usb drive with the program.

After burning the ISO file to the USB, disconnect it and connect it again.. Start up the Windows Installer and install the new fresh copy and follow instruction

This removes EVERYTHING from your current OS from files to programs BUT DO NOT FEAR..

After installing the OS FORMAT the USB drive and Use another computer or the library to download necessary files from the Asus support website...

and download Atheros Wireless Lan Driver and Application ... and also Foxconn Wireless Lan Driver and Application.. COPY it to the USB drive and put it on your Laptop....

Install these to put Wifi back on your laptop...after you put Wifi back , Use the laptop to download more files, like the bluetooth one or the mouse / touchpad settings one..

Download every file that looks necessary and install them on your Laptop... ALSO do a Windows Update.. BUT you can't do an Update unless you verify that you have a legit copy of windows By going to Start Control Panel System and Security System Scroll down to where it says Windows activation and Activate Now! , use the key on the sticker on the back of your Laptop

DID YOU KNOW YOU CAN ALSO INSTALL UBUNTU ON THIS

this is a great laptop, fast and HP!

HP has lots of software support, but 8 is a problem for those of us trained on

windows 3 through 7 (even 6 or Vista).

8.1 made it worse my VPN still works on 7, but not on 8??

light, fast and a large and fast hard drive

would have been nicer if HP had allowed me to design it on their site,

but I wasnot in the US to do that just then.

Came dead on arrival. nothing on screen, no beeps... called HP.. spent three hours with tech support. No luck. Really nice laptop. design and build quality is great. Just that HP seems to be a bit low end compared to apple or even dell.

I returned this computer without turning it on or activating it in any way. It had a scratch on the side of the case that was apparently there when it was packaged at the manufacturer. The packaging was adequate and undamaged. The seller was in no way responsible as this was drop-shipped to me directly from the manufacturer distributing center.

Last years set of windows 8 tablets were a great start to getting windows 8 into the ultra mobile arena. The Atom processors in them kept them thing, cool, and energy efficient all while allowing us to run a full windows operating system halfway decently. They weren't perfect, with limitations like usb 2.0, 2gb of ram, poor graphics, and a sometimes lackluster desktop performance. Intel sets to out do itself with the newer Baytrail chipset giving better processing and video performance as well as compatibility with newer technologies. With windows 8.1 a while slew of new tablets are being released with newer processors and other updated specs, the Asus T100 is one of the first.

Design: If you have used a transformer pad, you will be in a familiar territory. The T100 has a glossy back with the usual Asus logo coming out of the center. It is comfortable and has a decent enough grip to it. The front compared to some other tablets has a decent bezel but nothing to bad, it helps when holding it so you don't accidentally touch the screen. On the right you have the micro usb (for peripherals and charging), micro hdmi, micro sd, and headphone jack. Top has power, and left includes a volume and windows start button strangely (the front windows button doesn't do anything). One bad thing is I am putting an sd card in to stay, and it kind of sticks out a little on he side which could eject it easily or have more of a chance of damaging it.

On the bottom you have the port connection the the keyboard. This snaps and locks in to the keyboard to kep it steady and from disconnecting. Overall the feel of the tablet on the keyboard is pretty good, it feels for the most part like a laptop (as well as looks like one albeit a tiny one). The provided keybaord looks good, it has a polished metal look and some good weight to it (which helps with the weight of the tablet). The size is fairly is tiny, which is expected and because of this kind of hard to type on, I wouldn't try a very huge typing session. The only thing That I really don't like is the mouse pad, it works for pointing but the clicking goes far to deep and is just hard to use overall.

Display: The display looks pretty nice, it has good angles, good color and just really for the price doesn't disappoint in the slightest.

Battery life: I haven't had any trouble with it so far but I haven't actually paid enough attention to give an accurate say on it. It looks like I could get the advertised 11 hours, some reviews have claimed they got up to 12 hours even. I will try and update once I get a better read on it.

Software: Windows 8.1 seems to have some decent additions to what windows 8 already offered. As I have said in other reviews windows 8 I think it is the most dynamic mobile operating system right now. I have used many android tablets, as well as Ipads and while they are all great in their own right windows 8 just takes the cake. Apple has the most apps (especially tablet apps) , Google is a good mix of openness and a large amount of tablets apps. Windows 8 doesn't have a ton of table optimized applications, but the ability to have a full windows desktop applications is just awesome. It runs a smooth touch interface tablet when I need it for that, but if I really want to do business I can do it with this and run real windows programs such as photoshop, flash, steam etc.

Performance: Bay trail performance greatly meets my expectations. Almost all of the performance woes I had with clover trail are gone. The desktop lag I had is now pretty much gone, applications and windows open pretty much immediately. I had issues with websites like hulu before and now it runs without any issues. The metro touch interface is as smooth as ever, dual apps work like a charm as well. I've also tested the gaming ability, with some older and newer games just to test out the video capabilities.

The first game I tried was Elder Scolls V: Skyrim , I know right , is this thing ever going to start? Well after a lengthy load session I got in and at lowest settings I got a 10-15fps really not the worst performance ever though not really playable. From there I tried some more realistic titles

Bastion For some reason stuck at 20fps, probably a glitch between the hardware and software.

League of legends At low settings a very playable 40fps which is just great!

Half-life 2 At medium settings I got around 40fps

Far cry 2 low settings 20 fps

Torchlight high settings 40-50 fps

Rollercoaster tycoon 3 high settings 40+ fps

Tony Hawk HD 15 fps

Legend of Grimrock 40-50 fps medium settings

Flatout 2 40-50 fps

I figure that should give a pretty good idea of what to expect as far as older games, it really doesn't do bad at all considering it is a 10 inch tablet ultra thing tablet, with 11 hours of battery and no fans.

Overall my conclusion is a real giant thumbs up to this new generation of windows tablets. It did everything it's predecessor did but better. Asus itself gives a really great deal here including the keyboard that works well for what it is. The only thing I wish this tablet had is dual digitizer pen input which if you have ever used it on these makes things a lot easier sometimes. Spending extra on a Surface Pro tablet might have some performance advantages but you lose a lot of mobility and battery as well. Looking at the other platforms I really encourage you to give windows 8 a go, it really has a lot of advantages to possibly consider switching over to this newer tablet market.

Asus was the manufacturer of the best motherboards available 25 years ago. They know hardware well. My Linux based EEE PC 1000 was my device of choice for years, before the days of tablets, because it was so portable. The T100TA is about the same size, weighs a fourth as much, has respectable processor power, and mine has been running on battery for about 7 hours now and seems to have a quarter tank left. Like the EEE, this device put good electronics in an ok package.

It would make my fingers hurt to do any serious, all day, writing on this keyboard. The right shift key is tiny. I wish they made the comma and period keys smaller instead. That was plain dumb. The touchpad is not what you get with a Thinkpad or a Mac; but it's far superior to sacrificing half the screen and using a touch input. The screen is perfectly fine, not as crisp as my son's Nexux 7, also made by Asus, but it looks sharp and crisp next to my two year old Thinkpad. The sound is good. Importantly, it can charge up with my micro usb cables from my Samsung devices and my son's tablet. The dock/keyboard is pretty much an external keyboard with a usb3 port. The upside of that is it doesn't get hot. In the real world, this internet counts.

I have been using Window 8 since it came out and 8.1 still feels awkward to me. Using my Thinkpad, I keep touching the non-touchscreen after only having this for a day. Use a touchscreen and you won't want to go back. I'm loving Bing News. To look at my information choices in a landscape format is comfortable on my eyes. Ebooks work well on this in that format as well. The recipe app can be used on a kitchen counter better than a tablet because it holds itself in place and it's way better than a big notebook which hogs the counter.

Internet Explorer let a website popup a commercial which blared at me while my wife was sleeping and I couldn't turn it off before she woke up. I killed the popup box but the audio kept going until I exited Explorer. I installed Firefox and made it my default browser because it has plugins to protect me from those shenanigans.

Are you a Kindle books user? This is the best device I have ever used for Kindle books. This counts a few tablets, including a couple Kindles. The reason is simple: Like a book, a tablet gets hard to hold after a while for those of us who have a hard time putting down a book. This sits on your lap, on a chair or in bed, and doesn't get hot or hurt your wrists holding it. The spacebar turns the page and seeing pages side by side feels right to me.

If this were an expensive device, I would give it three stars. If the software was more user friendly, I would give it five. Some reviews have noted that Amazon's vendor is charging more than retail for it. I would wait for it to come to $399. I just ordered a 64 GB SDXC card and should have done so when I ordered this. It should be good enough to hold enough data for me to get done the things I want. If you want a perfect compact touchscreen convertable computer, look elsewhere and dig deeper into your pockets. I think I'm going to be happy with this, especially after getting more used to the software.

Honest reviews on ASUS Transformer Book T100TA-C1-GR 10.1-Inch Convertible 2-in-1

I've been using this unique machine for about five hours now. Before I review it, I want to give some context: I regularly use the Nexus 10 for mobile computing with a keyboard arguably the best screen you can buy on a tablet. I also have the first Nexus 7. I have tried to present on my nexus 10 and it crashed the projector. So I have been using my Asus 1201n running Win8.1 to handle all MS programs.

Enter the Asus T100. I didn't buy it for the tablet option, though that is useful. I bought it (from B&H for $399 64 gb I live in Canada and it came in two days) for a few reasons 10 hrs of Microsoft usage without plugging in. Good touchscreen. Light (very important must fit in my small MEC shoulder bag with Nexus 10 and a book without strain). Smaller than my 12 inch. Fast processor at least four times faster than the Atom dual core in my Asus 1201n, which really was cutting edge in Sept. 2010 (still pretty solid).

My initial verdict.

Screen you won't be upset. Any rendering problems are Microsoft's and not due to the pixel count. Asus's reading mode turns the screen a yellow hue, but may help the eyes. Touch functionality is exceptional though reviewers say it only has 5 pt touch, not 10 (which used to be standard not sure why this has been reduced though I never use 10 fingers on the screen at once). Track pad is also quite good, though I'm not a clicker I like to double tap which this does well.

Charging slow but this is the first charge. Haven't discharged it yet.

Keyboard cramped compared to my Asus 12 inch netbook. Cramped compared to my bluetooth motorola android keyboard (which is superb). But But But in five hours I feel like I'm already about 50% adapted to the key layout. Way better than typing on the screen. Definitely takes some getting used to.

Processor and performance Snappy. This is not an i5 chip, for sure. But I'm not really waiting for anything to load when I use apps which happens on my three other win 8 machines. This is my fastest machine it feels like a work horse to me, but I don't do video editing and I don't play pc games. I do regularly use ppt, vlc, youtube ripper, lots of chrome. Let's say I'm an aggressive word processor, browser, ppt user. This is ideal for me, though I could enjoy a 12 inch screen. The biggest issue that makes the screen feel cramped is simply the small Win8 text rendering which can be adjusted.

My advice I'd buy this over a Chromebook. I'd buy this over the high priced but attractive looking Yoga and any other Win8 running Mac Book Air competitor (definitely buy it over a surface you'd have to be crazy to pull the trigger on a surface pro over this baby). The 2gb of ram is much speedier on this machine than the 4gb ram in my Asus 1201n (that I upgraded). I haven't had a ram issue yet and I'm running lots of programs and apps simultaneously.

For what it is worth, I agree with most everything said in this review: http://techreport.com/review/25537/asus-transformer-book-t100-convertible-notebook-reviewed

Enjoy!

Update after two days of use:

The battery is exceptional. I used the computer from 9-12, then 1-2, then 3-7 and I had 28% left. From 5:30-7 I was presenting over powerpoint, and also playing film clips. It also accepts a charge from my anker external battery pushing my mobile work time up to double the reported 10 hrs. The only problem I found with presenting is that some of the film clips seemed dark. I'm not sure if this is because the micro-hdmi to VGA converter has difficulty or because I tinkered with the screen's colours and contrast ratio and the projector interpreted this differently.

I'm adjusting to the keyboard, but like many reviewers have noted the right shift key is small and I often miss it. Please note: the two feet of the hinge, which touch the table when the screen is up, can scratch a wood finish very easily. I produced three scratches at home before I figured out what the sound was. Like one reviewer as well, my keyboard had a slight warp that made it wobble. I've bent it back into shape. So some parts of the construction seem needlessly cheap, like the warped keyboard and the glossy and sometimes flimsy back of the tablet. Less like the Nexus 10 back and more like the lid to my old Asus 1201n. You don't notice the flex until you pick up the screen in tablet mode and then it definitely seems less sturdy than either Nexus (one of which Asus made shame shame). Like many have mentioned, I would pay $100 more for this T100 if it had a resolution that rivaled the iPad or Nexus and a sturdy aluminum back.

The device is still snappy. Chrome seems ridiculous on this machine though. I held it up on my Nexus and used all the screen controls (pinch to zoom...etc). Then I showed my wife what Chrome couldn't do in Win8.1. IE puts Google to shame here.

The ASUS Transformer Book T100 delivers a ton of value in a mostly compelling package. The beauty of today's computing devices is that consumers are no longer forced to buy one-size-fits-all, and instead, have the choice to buy what best fits their needs. I've used the ASUS T100 (64GB) over the past couple of days, and while I wouldn't consider it powerful/comfortable enough as primary computing device, I think it makes great sense as a secondary machine, especially with the advances in cloud storage.

From my perspective, the ASUS T100 is basically a tablet with the ability to become a mini-notebook. Whether you will love or hate it strongly depends on what your intended application and expectations are. I plan to use the ASUS T100 for both work and recreation, with note-taking, email, web browsing, presenting, and video playback being the most common tasks, and from my initial impression, it does these jobs quite well. While I found the keyboard a bit too cramped for my liking (smaller-than-normal keys + tighter spacing + my big hands = not very happy), and wasn't too keen on the touch/clickpad (doesn't always respond to the first touch, two-finger scrolling can be a bit jerky, loud and hollow-sounding click), it wasn't a deal-breaker considering the price point. The keyboard dock is really usable, and I appreciated having it when I was typing longer emails and editing office documents.

The ASUS T100 features a Intel Atom Z3740 Quad-Core processor which is exceptionally power efficient and much better performing than previous Atoms, though it is still slow compared to traditional notebook/ultrabook processors. For example, the year-old "low-end" Pentium 2117U, rated at 17W TDP, is more than twice as fast as the Atom Z3470 in single-threaded workloads though it can also draw ~4X more power. The Z3740 is pretty even with the Pentium in multi-threaded workloads, through the slower single-threaded performance will be more evident with slower app/program launches, etc.

At the end of the day, I like the ASUS T100. ASUS has developed many 2-in-1 transforming solutions in the past and its expertise shows in the T100 ~ while made of the plastic, the overall build quality and precision is good for the price. I more or less agree with the specifications such as as the CPU and 64GB of eMMC, though I think 2GB of RAM is too stingy, especially since it cannot be upgraded later. Overall, I think the ASUS Transformer Book T100 is a much needed breath of fresh air and I'm excited about the future possibilities.

Notes:

1) Compared to the ARM versions of Microsoft's Surface RT and upcoming Surface 2 (non-pro), the ASUS T100 offers an exceptional value proposition by bundling Office 2013 and being compatible with regular Windows software.

2) For my own computing needs, I found the combination of a portable machine with good battery life, paired with a powerful desktop to be ideal. The "good-enough" performance of the ASUS T100 along with great battery life and ability to fall back to full-blown Windows makes it well suited for this role.

3) Web Browsing and Document editing on Microsoft platforms is generally a great experience. Internet Explorer on both Modern and Desktop modes is fully functional and delivers a rich web experience with Flash, Javascript, HTML5, etc. Office 2013 allows for native viewing and editing of documents which is something iOS and Android sometimes have difficulty with.

4) Office 2013 Home and Student is pre-installed and includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and One Note. A serial number for activation is in the box.

5) The charging cable is Micro USB but is very short by laptop standards. It attaches to the tablet side instead of the keyboard dock. The USB port on the keyboard dock is on the LEFT side.

6) The Windows 8.1 UI feels very fluid though App/Program launches can be sluggish.

7) Free space on the 64GB version is ~ 37GB. Windows 8 has a built-in recovery mechanism which allows you to re-install/repair Windows or remove all user files.

8) The T100 supports Microsoft's Connected Standby feature which means it only sips power in the suspend state so you don't need to turn it on/off frequently. Modern Apps such as email are refreshed periodically even in suspend so the live tiles are "fresh" when you resume the system. Resume from suspend is nearly instantaneous. It should be noted that desktop apps are suspended during Connected Standby so they are not refreshed.

9) Boot times are quick ~ the system can boot to the start screen in

Graphical capability: I tested several 2008~2011 graphics demanding games using high to ultra settings, and all of them run perfectly fine.

Heat dissipation: Apple laptops and some HP laptops are notorious for heating (or even overheating) when the user is using them for any graphically demanding tasks. This laptop doesn't have that problem.

Price: As I said above, a 17" laptop with these specs is quite a bargain for the price. (I almost considered buying an Alienware, but unless you're a power gamer that always plays the most recent high end games, this laptop would be a more suitable alternative).

[Cons]

Lousy initial setup: If you have purchased a laptop before, you know they usually come with pre-installed bloatwares; this one is not an exception. Also, I noticed that the drivers are not up-to-date, and UEFI BIOS also needs to be updated.

Wireless card: My neighbor and I share the same wi-fi, and the modem is located in her living room. Even though it's a little bit far from my bedroom, in the past, I have no problem connecting my Macbook Pro to the internet. However, I have noticed that Acer-771G has a significantly lower reception range than my MBP, and it frequently loses connections. The connection slightly improved after I did the updates mentioned above, but it is still far from satisfactory. (See this link for more details: http://community.acer.com/t5/Notebooks-Netbooks/Acer-wifi-limited-connectivity-issue/td-p/3405)

[Neutrals]

Build quality: The casing feels rather cheap and brittle, but you shouldn't be asking for more with a powerful laptop of this price.

Design: This is more of a personal statement I have to admit that the physical design of the laptop still has a great amount of room for improvement.

Windows 8: From a technical standpoint, this version of OS is indeed less user-friendly than Windows 7. But if you're well-versed with technology, it shouldn't be a problem. I have been using the laptop for a few days now, and the learning curve is not steep at all. The alternative solution would be to spend $4.99 and purchase Stardock's Start8 If you prefer the conventional Windows start button: http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/

I was a little apprehensive buying a new computer online with no reviews but this ended up being a great purchase. I needed a new notebook for DJing/music production and occasional gaming and decided on this one. This notebook is FAST and runs everything I throw at it nicely; Ableton Live, Serato DJ, Sleeping Dogs and other newer PC games, and just media in general such as 1080p YouTube videos and things like that. The screen is big and bright, with a native resolution of 1600x900 which, while not true 1080p, is more than sufficient for my needs. I really like the piano black finish and so far it hasn't really been a fingerprint magnet because I wash my hands.

The downsides? There are a couple but they are relatively minor in my opinion. The first is Windows 8; I truly hate this operating system and the first thing I did when I got this notebook was format the HDD and reinstall Windows 7. The battery life also kind of sucks at 4 hours max, but really I keep this thing plugged in 90% of the time. It's also pretty big so it's not the most portable of laptops but for my needs that's not an issue, really, but if you are a frequent traveler I'd look into a smaller option.

Basically, if you are like me and need a notebook that will be used at home 90% of the time then this is a good choice.

Honest reviews on Acer Aspire V3-771G-6814 17.3-Inch Laptop (Midnight Black)

I got this computer after Amazon jacked up the price of it's older model by $150. I bought this laptop so I can do studio work on it and some gaming on the side. On first impression I was amazed at how fast it was, and how bright and crisp the screen is. After the quick set up of windows 8, I noticed that it came pre-loaded with some annoying software. After spending the better part of my afternoon removing it I got down to installing my own programs. The computer runs almost flawlessly. No matter what I throw at it, there seems to be little to no issues. This is due to the 2.6 Ghz i5 processor. The turbo boost on it really means that this is a 3.2Ghz core. The 8 Gb of ram is amazing, and the Hard drive isn't nearly as slow as some people would make it out to be. When I ran some games I was amazed at what the Nvidia 730m can do. I ran Crysis 1 at max settings and had no lag whatsoever and Fallout: NV runs at Ultra high, also no lag. This thing is FAST! Another nice bonus is that the built in speakers are fantastic. They are some of the best sounding laptop speakers I have ever heard.

Once it became time to charge my laptop I noticed a few things. This computer when running at a moderate workload will only last about 2-2.5 hours. If you are really working hard (or gaming hard) the laptop will die on you in about an hour after full charge. Once I plugged in my computer I noticed that it has an irritating little beep that it makes every time you Plug/unplug it. This wouldn't be a problem i thought, but after a few min. of charging it beeped again. Something was causing my computer to charge on and off and thus making it produce that irritating beeping noise over and over again, however this may be just an independent issue. Another small problem is the black on the computer is very shiny and it stains with fingerprints very easy. This means that every time you go to open or close the computer, you leave a mark, and when you type, your hands are on the black under the keyboard and your palms are smudging the finish. Another thing about the computer is that i didn't know how big a 17.3 inch screen would really be. This laptop is not the most portable, but If you are stationary 90% of the time, you shouldn't notice a problem with it.

In short: The computer runs like a dream, but there are still some things to be desired. I love it and would recommend it to my friends. This computer gives you the most bang for your buck when you are looking at mid-high end laptops!

I recently bought this laptop after much deliberation with other laptop brands. Let me firstly state that I was not into Acer products, but after reading some great reviews and hearing from some friends with good experiences I decided to buy this.

So far, after about one month of owning this laptop I am most pleased. For one thing this is superb value for money... I mean really $726 for a laptop with these specifications is almost unheard of. By comparison, a Dell with these same specifications is about $1,600.

My requirements for this laptop are simple basic use of microsoft office, internet browsing, iTunes and the odd movie or game. This exceeded my expectations. I did read several reviews where this could be used as a gaming laptop and I do agree that it can be. The graphics card (4GB NVIDIA GeForce) and processor (2.6GHz with turbo boost to 3.2GHz) and RAM (a whopping 8GB) would easily support gaming. The 17" display is also awesome though I do feel that for gaming you'd want a full HD (1920 x 1080) versus this HD screen (1600 x 900). For me that is just a matter of semantics cause the 1600 x 900 suits be perfectly for what I want and the a couple of hudred bucks for full HD made no sense to me (especially since I have full HD TV with Bluray player and and IPAD with retina display which itself is beyong full HD).

I love the fact that there is a number pad since this makes use of excel so much easier. The touchpad is nice and very responsive. The laptop is not noisy and even the hard drive and fans are very silent even under heavy use (for example downloading movies from iTunes). The laptop is cool to touch and compared to my now retired HP pavillion, the heat generated by this Acer is so much less.

I've seen people complain about the piano black finish but that is not a big deal for me. Yes fingerprints show up but I just wipe it off with a microfiber cloth and voila new again. I mean really what do a few of YOUR fingerprints on YOUR laptop matter when you have such a high performance beast to use. It's like a car it will get dirty with use but just clean it!

No onto what I consider the very debatable issue of Windows 8. I admit that reading all the negatives of windows 8 did cause me to reconsider this laptop. I decided to buy the laptop and install windows 7 as needed. I still run windows 8, have no issues with it and have no intention of installing windows 7. I have grown accustomed to windows 8 and admittedly quite like it. There is that home screen with all the tiles and apps, but the desktop is the same as other windows and the functionality of windows is the same. While it may be difficult to location certain "feature" of windows we have grown to know and love, the Search feature of windows 8 enables you to type in anything you want an quickly locate it on the laptop to perform your device configuration, setup a wireless and even access control panel. As far as I am concerned widows 8 was a change from the norm, but I am cool with it. Even my wife who is a technophobe of sorts is happy with using windows 8.

The fast processor, harddrive and RAM plus windows 8 makes for record laptop boot time. After pressing the ON button the laptop boots up and and the logon screen appears within 22 seconds. After entering the password and hitting enter, 8 seconds to home screen. Launch a program (iTunes, Word, Excel, Internet Explorer), 5-10 seconds. I mean you can literally power up this machine and start yor work within a minute. Excellent for me!

The only flaw I saw was the boat load of nonsense apps that Acer preloaded on this machine. I tookthe advice of a fellow reviewer and removed all the unwanted apps by uninstalling the program from control panle and/or uninstalling the program from the home screen. The best way to figure which app to remove is to look at the full list of progams in control panel and then launch each program to see what it does and if you need it. If you don't need it uninstall it. I kept a few like the acer power management and mediaespresso. The rest were just out of the window. There is one particular app Soluto which takes up alot of memory and all this app seems to do is launch internet explorere and display the configuration of the Acer machine.... LAME!!!!

It took me about two hours to remove the unwanted apps. To get this laptop to where I wanted it to be tooke me about one day and that involved familiarising myself with windows 8, uninstalling apps/junk programs, installing anti virus software, installing micorsoft office, installing iTunes, and updating Java and flash player. Most of that time though was waiting for programs to download, waiting for programs to uninstall so while I did spend a day to get the laptop in order, I was off doing other things while programs were downloading or uninstalling.

I am pleased with this purchase and I am sure you will be as well. This is a great laptop and great value for money.

Do not buy. This laptop lastes less than 2.5 years and for that kind of money I expected more. Turns out the problem is well known and yet they continued to sell this model. Before you buy, google hp pavilion dv7 won't wake up from sleep mode or dv7 won't boot up and read about it for yourself.

Loved this laptop until it just suddenly stopped working with no warning signs and no drops/spills/abuse/virus. Can't believe I spent over $700 and didn't even get 3 years out of it.

Hope this saves someone some money!

I certainly am not a computer geek and have no intention of trying to provide you with a technical breakdown of the unit. The computer does what it is supposed to do based on the specifications. ( Oops haven't tried the fingerprint reader, I forgot!) What I really wanted to convey in this review is the fact that the laptop was recertified, refurbished, remanufactured, whatever!!! Without reading that statement on the box, I would have told you I have brand new laptop. I am sure that there are people out there that would probably rather pull their own nails out rather than buy a recertified unit!! I just wanted to tell you this isn't my first recertified unit nor do I expect it to be my last. I do not fear recertified!! And I am suggesting that if you want to get the most bang for your buck, recertified is definitely the way to go. Now as sure as God made little green apples, there is going to be someone outside who has purchased a recertified unit that might have been DOA and they want my tongue. Well people, that happens to new unit too! I love my laptop and the many features that go with it. At least think about what I have suggested!! Happy computing!

I've had a lot of laptops, and this have never happens to me. When it was one month old it just stopped working, it did nothing!, I contacted the seller and they told there was nothing to do, but to all HP because the return time was up, I called and they told me: "It is not software but hardware, and I although I had an international warranty, there wasn't the pieces in my country so there was nothing to do until I return to the US (because it was a new product)". All this money for these, it was suppose to be one of the best laptops!!. I had a Dell and when I needed the international warranty, they were in my house in three days. Don't buy HP products if you are going to travel. This is the worst experience ever with a customer service and with a laptop.

Lenovo ThinkPad T60p
Customer Ratings: 4 stars

I am using the T60P using windows XP Pro (today's year is 2012) to write this review using MS OFFICE 2003 and connected to the web via Google Chrome. I have had no issues beyond only one with this Lenovo (IBM) ThinkPad: it is a Centrino Due. A slower processor that I have not found to run hot, and it has not crashed either. All and all it is a good machine. The battery has lasted up 3.5 hours with normal use of MS office and desktop publishing. Not unexpected considering the age of which this computer came out. That also can be solved by purchasing any one of the many extended battery methods on the market. I do not use the Lenovo T60P to travel much away from home, I bought the Lenovo X41 for this and an extended battery that last me a good six hours of MS Office time (the X41 cannot handle desktop publishing but I don't require that when I am away from home--who does?). For me, whatever the subject, it has always been "the right tool for the right job!"

Oh, one more thing if anyone is reading this, I am not a rich man, if I was I would have the latest and greatest computers, one for the road and one for home as now. They still would be a laptop and a notebook computer (of sorts) but they would, most likely, be an Apple Macbook Pro and iPad. They seem to be the best system for my uses and the computer technology of today (imho).

This laptop came with passwords installed. Took me 2 days to make passwords go away and the 'secure' passwords did conflict with fingerprint security software. This machine is still showing as it belongs to the seller. The machine is in good physical condition, however, seller never 'cleaned' past users settings/passwords to set the machine ready for the next user. Windows and thinkpad software was not updated for a long period of time. After I cleaned this clutter and updated the system with windows and thinkpad software, it is finally working as normal. It just runs hot, sometimes very hot. Battery lasts 2-3 hrs depending upon task. Bulging battery pack makes it less portable. I just use it for checking email and surf the web while I am in bed.

Just got this laptop a couple of weeks ago! The screen is pretty nice (1366x768), because its so small the 1366x768 screen looks pretty crisp. I cant complain about the keyboard its very good, however I would like it to be back-lit! The performance is what I expected it to begood for almost anything except for games, I'm a student so i use it for writing and surfing the web and it does the job well! Battery life is great reaches 5 hours however that depends on how u use it! Its fairly light, its not as light as an ultra book, however its lighter than a typical 14 inch laptop and can be carried in a bag easily. It has a great selection of ports. I would like to add that it looks much smaller and thinner than it does on the above pictures. On the negative side it had a lot of bloatware! I installed a fresh copy of win 8 Pro and now it runs smooth. In addition to that the black version is a fingerprint magnet, i cant say that for the white version. I did have some issues with touch-pad driver and the Bluetooth is nonexistent, but i didn't try installing it because i never use it -I don't know anyone who does! The track pad does the job well, its not a MacBook but its smooth and precise! Otherwise i would recommend it to any student that wants a light laptop with solid battery life.

At $430, this is definitely the bang for your buck.

* BUILD

Although the frame is constructed entirely out of plastic, it has a sturdy feel to it. It's not flimsy. Not heavy but not ultrabook-light either, pretty thin. However, this thing is a fingerprint magnet. Using rubbing alcohol and wipes removes them. The bottom of the laptop tends to get warm, but this "IceCool" sorcery manages to keep your typing space cool. This laptop does not have an optical drive.

* BATTERY

The battery life is decent you can get a good 4-5 hours of usage. The charger comes in two pieces, the power cord and the adapter. There's no velcro strap :(

* KEYBOARD

The keyboard is very nice chiclet style. No numpad, the home/end keys are nested under the arrows. I'd recommend putting one of those silicone covers over it to prevent dust/crap from getting in.

* POWER

@2.4 GHz & 4 GB of RAM, this will handle all of your basic office/web browsing needs. To give you an idea, I'm running iTunes, Skype, 10 tabs on Firefox, 7 on Chrome and some background processes. This amounts to ~75% of the RAM being used. Should be ok for light gaming (e.x. Minecraft), don't go crazy.

* SOFTWARE

This is where it (and most mass-manufacture brands) sucks. It's loaded with A LOT of bloatware. You can uninstall it manually or just install a fresh copy of Windows (USB boot though; no optical drive).

This felt like it fit the needs perfectly.Alas' once I got the product, it was such a big disappointment. I have used ASUS tablets and thought this laptop will be of similar quality like them. But this laptop is made of plastic and doesn't feel well built at all. Moreover, it takes a while to boot and the key board is not very comfortable. The first item I received came with a defective battery and a defective power source. The laptop would go off after I disconnected the charger, also the touchpad was damaged and not properly attached to the laptop's structure. I then requested an exchange on the same item. The second laptop arrived with a defective monitor, when I turned it on I would only see grayish colors with low brightness and low contrast. That is it; I had a really bad experience with this Asus product and will not be buying any other product with the Asus logo ever. Although I want to point out the excellent costumer service I received from the In-amazon store I purchased the laptop from. They were very responsive and handled the exchange and the refund in a professional way.

This is a really great machine here are my specs.

17" Intel core i7 is a beast! Purchased brand new and custom from the Apple online store in summer 2010. I've upgraded the memory to 8GB and has the 7200 rpm 500GB hard drive and superdrive. The battery has a cycle count around 300 which is listed as normal under system information and still holds a wonderful charge.

Never had any repairs on this machine and it has never given me any problems. There are a few light scratches on the casing from everyday use, and the black nubs on the bottom have some light wear but cosmetically I think the machine can still pass as brand new.

All the current programs run extremely well on this machine and if you have the chance to own one do yourself a favor and purchase one.

The product was old and in poor condition when it finally arrived 3 weeks after it was ordered. I returned it took 3 days to get there and was charged $150 for returning it. The refund was made 3 days after the product was delivered to its origin. I feel utterly ripped off. The unit is worth, at best, $700. I expected a much newer unit in much Better shape for $1450. And I did not expect to get screwed out of $150 for returning a unit that was a pile of crap and certainly was not what I believed it to be based on the amazon listing.

Totally disgusted.

If you have also been DUPED into believing these "i7" computers are Quad core, then you have my sympathies and condolences, WHICH IS ALL APPLE WILL HELP WITH, OH NO WAIT THEY SUGGESTED I SELL IT ON CRAIGSLIST AND DUMP IT ON ANOTHER POOR UNSUSPECTING PERSON LIKE ME!. (SORRY APPLE I'M NOT AS CRUEL AS YOU ARE I WILL GIVE IT TO A FAMILY MEMBER WHO IS USING A G4 17" LAPTOP.... MAYBE IT WILL BE AN UPGRADE FOR THEM???? Mine wont even render video with After Effects CS4, as fast as my old 2007 imac did, this is a joke and I am starting to feel real contempt from Apple, whom I will never ever give another penny to. I sure hope that poor person above me who gave 5 stars doesn't do any 3D OR AVC video editing(SOMETHING YOU NEED A QUAD FOR). I'll wrap this up by stating never to buy Apple again after the way they treated me on the phone(the rep Matt even conceded to me he would have bought it thinking it was QUAD CORE) and then proceeded to hand me off to someone who acted like my paltry $2500 wasn't worth giving me the time of day over.. Good luck to all who buy THIS wreck of a machine from any site.

In searching for a good 'Back to School' laptop, my criteria was that it needed to be durable, functional & reasonable.

I wanted a laptop that will last a while not some junk that will break in 2 years. Because of this, I wanted a reputable brand.

I've always had good experiences with Dell, so I decided to give it a shot. This Dell 15(3521) i15RV-6143BLK really ticked all of the boxes for me.

* It has the Intel Pentium Processor, which I've always preferred over an AMD.

* It has a decent amount of Memory with 4 Gigs then 500GB Storage on the hard drive.

* This laptop has a DVD Burner (Dual Layer DVD+/-R Drive) which was a nice bonus.

* It has a generous sized 15.6" screen which is in HD (780p). I really don't need 1080p on a screen this size.

* All of the images are crisp and the colors are vibrant & bright. Great picture quality.

* It's very cool having such a large screen with Touch capabilities.

* The screen itself is very responsive to the touch of a fingertip & it's neat to do things 'sans mouse pad'.

* So far, the battery life on this laptop is very good. On a full charge, it goes for several hours no problem.

* It's very slim & sleek. Light weight, too. The top has a textured design, which gives it a unique & classy look.

* There's an "8 in 1" Media Card Reader, which allows you to load photos or any data from older (or newer style) memory cards.

* It has Bluetooth capabilities and a decent audio system built in. (Waves Maxx Audio 4.0)

* Of course, there's a built in webcam at the top of the screen.

* There are Four USB 3.0 Ports Three on the left side and one on the right.

* There's also an Ethernet Port, an HDMI Port & a standard AUX port on the sides of the keyboard.

* Even the keyboard itself makes me happy! It feels like quality. Typing is fluid & quiet.

* It has a separate number pad to the right of the keyboard which I prefer on a laptop.

* The mouse pad is smooth not textured, which for me is yet another little detail that puts this one over the top.

This comes with Windows 8 Pre-installed. Being this is my first experience with windows 8, I'm glad I paid a little more & got a "Touch Screen" rather than a laptop with a traditional screen. It's really made my transition into Windows 8 more acceptable. Coming from Windows 7 and XP before that, it does take a little getting used to. That being said, this Dell Inspiron 15 has everything that I was looking for and more. It's perfect for everyday computing and the touch screen makes it all the more attractive. It's so nice... I'm thinking of buying another one for my son... and keeping this one for myself!

I'd bought an Acer Aspire, but it was slow and very difficult to use, especially as I was getting used to Windows 8 as well. So after three days I returned it and ordered this Dell instead. Very smart decision. With this computer, I went from hating Windows 8 to loving it. The touchscreen is quick and sensitive, sometimes a bit too sensitive, but it switches between screens and apps quickly. There were not as many unnecessary apps, thus reducing clutter. The processer is very fast, with almost instantaneous switches from screen to screen. The computer itself is far sturdier, the mouse is great, and works all over the mouse pad, which is useful when trying to copy and paste. I also like the fact its smooth. The keyboard is smooth to type on. The only negatives I've found on this computer so far are both minor. The first is that the battery does not lie flat against the bottom of the computer, which makes it a little uncomfortable when sitting on your lap. The other is the mousepad, screen, and cover are very easily smudged. But overall, this is a great computer for the price, especially for someone like me who is not particularly computer-literate and just getting used to Windows 8. Its certainly far far better than the Acer I had before.

We bought this for our son and we love it! One of the easiest computers I have ever purchased. We will be purchasing a second one for our daughter.

I really like this laptop. The size is excellent and I really like the long battery life. Windows 8 has a bit of a learning curve but now that I have the hang of it I love it. I like the diamond texture of the system as well.
