1. Bus Speed is 800Mhz. In the laptop world, this would be right between slow and fast. If you a casual user (watch youtube while checking your e-mail and writing a report), this will be sufficient.

If you like to do multiple things at once (extended desktop to create dual screen enviroment, move large files to and from external HDs, burn a cd, with video(s) playing and a music production progam running) my recommendation is that you become familar with tweeking your Vista settings or buy a more powerful computer. It's not that it can't handle such lofty requests, it can. It will just be slow/will lock up.

2. Comes with 4Gb DDR2 (2x2GB). Now, this will be MORE than enough RAM for almost anyone. But what if you dream big and want to be a desktop in laptop's clothing? It's upgradable to 8GB, which is rare for a laptop. For the most part, 8 Gb laptop RAM (2 x 4GB) doesn't exsist. If you can find it, it will be at least $250+. HP Build a laptop states that a 8GB upgrade would be $400. Why would you need this much ram? I cannot say. This may be useful in the future, I do not know.

3. Harddrive speed is 5400RPM. This goes back to how much multi-accessing you do. 7200RPM would be nice, but not necessary.

4. Bloatware. I'm not really sure why this is much of a complaint in regards of any computer. Windows/Control Panel has a build in remove software feature that can remove most software completely in a short period of time. I'm sure that some computers come with INSANE programs that are so integrated into Windows, you must have a court order and holy water to remove it from your life. If you don't like the in house program, there is 3rd party softwere (free & pay) out there that claims to do a more through job cleaning out the gunk.

5. The Vista experience is rated at 3.8. Just a FYI.

6. This really isn't a "gaming" PC. It's just not. Spades, No problem. Minesweep until you can't see straight. It's your world baby. Crysis (and if you know what this game is, you know what I'm gonna say next) ain't happpening. BUT, if someone wants to try it on this notebook, please leave a comment on this review and let me know how that goes.

7. There is a slot in the PC that holds the mini remote control. On the left side of the laptop. COOOOOOOOOLLLLL! At least I think so.

8. Do I like this laptop. I do. It's not the fanciest thing on the market, but for the price, it's good.

I have only had this for five or so days but i am in love with it already lol.

I am a amateur photogrpher and i already have a bunch of photos stored on it, the space on this is great!

I have been on about eight or nine different sites (including youtube) at once and they are all as fast as just haveing one open.

The web cam is good quality, with great effects. the mic is crystal clear.

The lightscribe is great, even though it isnt in color i definitely prefer it over labels.

Oh, the only thing i wasnt looking forward to was the fact that the battery only last two hours. But it actually last about 4 hours, and that is with the laptop open and being used for four hours straight.

I shopped around and believe me, this is the best "Bang for the Buck" around. I no longer really play games, so the Intel integrated video being the only weak point was no big deal. ***Amazon's Ethernet Specs are Wrong*** This unit does NOT have Gigabit Ethernet, 10/100mb connection only. But everything else is top notch. Core 2 Duo 2.0, Beautiful 16" 720P HD Screen, Vista 64bit Premium (Do yourself a favor and buy the Upgrade to Ultimate 64bit), 320GB HD, 4GB Ram, eSATA, Bluetooth, USB 2.0, docking port, Wireless N!!!, remote and this is one gorgeous laptop.

I added a Gigabit Ethernet Express Card for $50, from Amazon, to make this laptop perfect.

This is a case of "You get MORE than what you pay for..."

Honest reviews on HP Pavilion DV6-1030US 16.0-Inch Laptop

I fell in love with this machine the instant I saw its specs and looks in Amazon... I got it delivered and the first problem I had was that the computer was described as having an internal bluetooth antenna, which after searching how to start it for half and hour and chatting with HP I realized it was not there! I got a discount from Amazon for this "mistake" which seems to happen quite frequently (I had the same problem with a Toshiba Satellite I purchased a while ago). The 64bit Vista is rather problematic than helpful. I am considering either upgrading to Ultimate or downgrade to 32bit. Although its processor is ranked as "genious" and it brings 4gb of ram I have runned tests with my old Toshiba running 32 bit Vista with a slower processor and with half the ram and time after time my new HP gets beaten!!!!!!!!!!!! I experience so many software related problems I cannot feel satisfied a single day about my purchase! The speakers and volume control give so many problems as well: I place the laptop in "mute" and still I get a fraction of a second of the beep of the instant messenger I use; the speakers are always making this noise like the power was just turned on; the volume control is non-responsive and then when it finally answers my command, it gets stuck both visually and audible. I still doubt that this machine can be expanded up to 8gb of ram as the specs in Amazon advertise, but I have not checked this yet. I guess I will get further disappointed... It's a shame that I feel this way for a laptop I found so captivating and (thought) powerful... Now I bought an xb3000 expansion base (which is advertised as the compatible one for the dv6) and I found myself with the obligation to purchase a new A/C adapter since the laptop AC should work with the base but guess what? the dv6 AC is too big for the base!!! So there you can add $50 extra if you decide to get the whole bunch. Bottom line: You can get the same performance with a cheaper, more convenient model and save yourself a lot of hassle... Sad but true!

This is my very 1st laptop, and 2nd HP computer. Originally I was looking for another desktop, as I didn't feel I could afford a laptop with decent specs. But I came across this while browsing. The price point was very good and I couldn't believe how loaded it was. Very fast, love the HD briteview wide screen. Loads up in decent time, even with all the bloatware and preinstalled Norton crap. It also has a handy little remote to run HP's media center. All in all I am very pleased with this computer.

I bought this laptop from Dell and I got to say it's easily one of the best laptops I've used in my life. This laptop handles multitasking like its nothing, running several programs at once. The i7 technology allows me to run my software developing program while listening to music on youtube and chatting on facebook with no lag while switching between windows.

The 1080p display is just beautiful, I play movies and music videos from youtube and it looks amazing. The display really impressed me.

My favorite part about the laptop I would say is the video card. The AMD Radeon HD 7730M 2GB is not the best graphic card out there, but it's still a really good video card. I've ran several games like The amazing spiderman, Black Ops 2, Assassin's creed, Need for Speed Most Wanted, Darksiders, and many more, and they all run extremely smooth. Some may not run at full FPS on high settings, some do, but they all run very smooth on med settings. The screen size of the laptop itself may be off putting to some gamers, but if you have a big screen TV and an HDMI cable, you can connect the two and get awesome quality on your TV.

In short, here are some of the highlights:

-Super fast i7

-Amazing 1080p display

-Very good graphics card

-Nice speakers

-Boots up in like 10 seconds

-Opens netbeans in like 3 seconds

-Smooth gaming

Some things I didn't like:

-Short battery time. Even on power saver mode it only last about 2-3 hours. I believe its because of the power of the laptop, so be sure to always carry your charger with you.

-A little heavy when compared to one of those lightweight laptops, but not too heavy nonetheless.

To summarize, if you're looking for a powerful laptop at an affordable price, then consider this super powerful computer.

Lets all be honest, the main draw of this machine is the 2gb video card. Dell has failed to update the BIOS to work correctly int he windows 8 environment and as such the video card does not get called if/when it should. You can do a few tricks to force it, but it won't work for games or for video editing.

The only fix I have found was the Catalyst control center, but even then Windows 8 will arbitrarily decide that the software doesn't need to work anymore, along with a myriad of other programs that are needed for most modern games (Steam/Origin/etc). When you can get a game to work and the video card to work too the game will run for a bit, but eventually the hammer will drop and your performance will dip or the game will crash.

If you must buy this laptop, go find a windows 7 version. Dell has no business shipping this as an end user device and microsoft has no business forcing windows 8 to be used when it just plain doesn't work.

This is an excellent Machine, very fast, with Turbo Booster 2.0 auto manage processor speed. I can run multiple tasks without delays excecuting them.

There is a model very similar to this one and almost 200.00 $USD ($736.00)cheaper, for less video and plastic back plate instead of aluminium, and keyboard backlit but more Hard Disk Drive, and 3 pounds less in weight which is very good if you carry your laptop with you. At first I thought I would have bought that one if was listed but now, after using this one I am very happy about this purchase.

No regret so far only:

1-This is advertised as 2.5 GHz, but base processor speed is 2.2GHz and I have seen mine at 2.9GHz with Turbo Booster Monitor.

2-Little heavy, 9 pounds (not really a problem).

3-Touch pad is very sensible but you can be solved with a mouse or some adjusting (not an issue).

4-I did not like, I saw this machine in dell.com website at a higher Price, and came here in blackfriday weekend, I though I bought it in a special Price, but now is lower. There was a psicological trick used to buy it in a hurry and two weeks later was a little cheaper. Not enough for a return but, I feel blackfriday was a trick.

Dell is a very good Brand and the best in Warranty service in my country, that was a very important point in my purchase.

This computer moves very fast, and multitask without delay.

My rate is 4.8 from 5.

Good Luck!!

I bought this laptop to replace my old Dell and I love it! It boots in around 20-30 seconds and is really fast in High Performance mode. It can even run Starcraft 2 with no problems. For the people that say it's slow, have you looked to see what mode it's in? It has 4 operating modes. High Performance, Entertainment, Quiet Office, and Battery Saver mode. It comes with Battery Saver mode on default so make sure to change it. If your looking for a really good laptop for a fair price then this is the one to get.

Update:

I have now had this laptop for almost three years and it is still holding up very well. By now the hardware is slightly outdated, but it still performs exceptionally. Over time the laptop has slowed down a little bit, but I have counteracted by upgrading the RAM prebuilt into the laptop. I still use it for mid-level computer games and for other day to day uses which it is very well suited to do. If you take of this laptop it will perform great for a long period of time and makes a great cheap device.

I only docked a star from it's rating because of the slow down over time and because the laptop is actually an ASUS K53U and not an A53U. I have no idea why Amazon has it listed as an A53U as you can find no details on the ASUS site about an A53U. Otherwise this is a great laptop!

This review is not going to be extremely in-depth, because I bought this computer for my dad for Christmas and only used it for about 2 days to get everything set up on it. Side note: My personal computers are Macs, but I am not extremely biased on operating systems, and I think Windows did a good job with 7. That being said, here is my initial impression on the computer.

The shipment of the laptop was quick and free (thanks Amazon Prime)! Packaging was minimum, but definitely secured and padded the laptop, which is a bonus in my eyes.

Upon opening the packaging, the computer looked sleek. It seemed like it was made not as study as a MacBook Pro (my Mac side showing), but it also wasn't cheaply made. It's made with plastic, which allows for it to be lighter and hopefully more durable.

Windows 7 Home Premium came with it, which is a nice upgrade from the basic, but it came loaded with all the Asus add-ons and slowed down the performance greatly. On start-up, the computer was using about ~65-70% of the memory performance. There was A LOT of programs running that was bogging down the performance. The very first thing I did was install a fresh copy of Windows 7 Home Premium and wiped the hard drive of all the nasty programs. The Windows 7 disc didn't come with the computer, so it may help to have a friend that has a physical disc and you can just load your OEM Windows key that came with the computer (on the box).

Once a fresh Windows 7 was installed, the computer ran like a dream. It is mainly being used for web surfing and light office work. I haven't received a call with any problems with it, so it's holding up!

If you are looking for a high-performing laptop for gaming or other CPU-intensive tasks, this obviously isn't the best choice computer for you. But for daily web browsing, word processing and less demanding CPU/GPU tasks, I recommend this laptop!

I highly recommend installing a fresh Windows 7 as soon as you pull it out of the box, and of course use protection! Windows has free software that works great for personal computers. You can't go wrong.

We purchased this to replace a Gateway laptop and I have to say so far this ASUS is an excellent little computer! Very easy to get this up and running and it loads pages quickly. The warranty that comes with the laptop is one of the best that I've seen. For the money you can't go wrong with this!

I bought this (ASUS A53U-EH11) laptop from Amazon.com because I needed another laptop to carry with me when I went on a trip.

My other ASUS has been a very good product and is still in very good condition, but it has programs that I would not need on vacation, also it has plugins that makes it harded to make portable.

I am very satisfied with this product, and I got it at a very low price.

Thank you Amazon, Pops

bought 2 of these last week. First thing i noticed when box was opened was the shiny mocha color which was very attractive. booted up and graphics was great. Performance after installing some programs was very fast. One problem was that the speakers were very soft for altec lansing. Tried everything to get them to boosts even went into the bios but it was locked on setting "4". So headphones or external speakers required for good listening. Pc is very good for the price and gonna purchase another one soon.

The size is nice and its nice to have a built in 10 key, but it's heavy. You could practically use it as an anchor so you definitely don't want to travel much with it. The battery life is in reality about 3 hours so don't go far without the cord.

As for the hardware itself, the keyboard and touch-pad are very low quality. The keyboard I can deal with but the touch-pad is absolutely horrible. It navigates the pointer with very low accuracy and is extremely non-responsive. Even with the touch-guard turned on, the mouse jumps around while typing and is difficult to find when you need it. I use an actual mouse most of the time which resolves this but this can be difficult when out and about with it so this is where the challenges become very apparent.

This laptop comes with Windows 8, while not Dells fault, is clearly an operating system designed more for use on a tablet than on a laptop. It is awkward, extremely cumbersome and very very inconvenient. Especially for veteran windows users. If you get this laptop and have a copy of Windows 7 laying around, I recommend the downgrade. It was rated one of the highest by Consumer Reports for laptops in this price range which is why I got it, but if I had to do it over again, I would probably spend a little more and get something else.

I bought the laptop and I've had it for a day. So far it seems to be pretty solid with the exception of the bloatware that's installed. But I guess you get that anywhere now-a-days. I just wanted to clarify the resolution on this. It is 1366x768, not 1920x1080 or the other 1366x1378 (more tall than wide??) as stated in the description. It is a solid laptop and hard to beat for the price.

I am very sad today to get a computer, a very serious problem is that the laptop's screen resolution is 1366 * 768, but the website is written in 1920 * 1080 and I think this is cheating, I now use this notebook in China, difficult to service, but the problem needs to be addressed, it is who is to blame? I do not know how to do, This is so sad.

So I noticed some weak reviews for this product and am quite disgusted. I bought this unit from Best Buy and have so far been impressed. I typically am a desktop user, in fact, I normally custom build my own rigs. I was in the market for a laptop, and didn't want to frustrate myself with custom building one so I shopped around a lot. For the price, it will be difficult to beat this machine. The only laptops that will come close (Dell XPS, AlienWare, and MSI) would all likely cost and extra $500-$1000. Every game I have played so far (Portal 2, Skyrim, etc) have ran on ultra settings with extremely great frame rates. Now for the Pros and cons:

Pros: Great heat displacement, it has two large exhaust ports on the backside of the machine. This keeps the heat off of the bottom and allows for "lap-top" computing. Processing speed is amazing. Cost is low, but shop around, I got it at Bust Buy for $200 cheaper (though the build is not exact to this model make your own decisions as to what you need). Back-lit key board is extremely neat. Large vibrant HD screen. Its not loaded down with a bunch of bloatware and demos. GTX 660M is a great GPU for most all (with the exception of the have to have the most expensive and overkill, melt your face GPU) users. Additional port for secondary HDD. Easy access for upgrades to HDD an memory. Ivy Bridge! This thing has blistering fast multi-app processing power!

Cons (and the reason for 4 stars): The biggest drawback for me is the 1TB HDD, as it is slow (5400 RPM). For this reason alone Windows Experience Index rated it a 5.9. All other ratings were mid to upper 7's. Shame on you Asus. For $130 buy a 128GB SSD from Amazon and up your computing potential. Just use the 1TB as a slave. It is bulky, but to be expected as it is a gaming lappy. Good luck trying to find a case that fits it.Lastly the power brick is enormous and the battery is lucky to give you 1.5 hrs unplugged. Again, this is a gaming laptop so this is to be expected.

Other thoughts: The pros highly out weigh the cons! For the price this Republic of Gamers laptop by Asus is a great investment.

Everything you've read in the other reviews about its power is true. Portal 2, Skyrim, etc. all look beautiful on this laptop. The matte screen with full 1080p resolution is very nice and easy on the eye. The jet engine fans on the back of the laptop have allowed for hours of gaming without feeling like I could flip the laptop over and grill an egg.

Now, some issues. One is that the space bar is not as responsive as I would like on a gaming keyboard. If I have my thumb too far over to one side, it will fail to register the press. This being the jump key in a lot of games, one can imagine the annoyance this has caused (I've run straight off of platforms like a dork).

The major issue, however, is that the subwoofer will sometimes play when you have headphones in. For a while, every time I started a media source that had audio, I would have to pull out my headphones and reinsert. This is quite annoying when you are trying to play something in a crowded room, or when someone in your house is sleeping. I uninstalled the drivers and let windows install its own, but now it mutes the audio until I click mute then unmute again. I don't know what is going on with this audio chipset, but there appear to be some kinks to iron out.

The audio issue is not a dealbreaker for me, as the laptop really is quite nice looking with excellent performance.I am hoping an update in the future will make my $1300 purchase perform as it should.

Best Deals for ASUS Republic of Gamers G75VW-AS71 17.3-Inch Gaming Laptop

I'm not a super gaming computer geek, but i know computers well and am an avid console gamer. I like playing fighting games like SFIV and the like and I also love first person shooters, action games, etc. Well so far I am VERY impressed with this behemouth of a machine! Not that street fighter is the most graphically intensive game, but i was coming from runing on my macbook pro under bootcamp with windows 7. Night and day difference. I can crank up all the settings including 8x antialiasing and the frame rate is stunning. no lag whatsoever. full screen full resolution all the bells and whistles enabled. Just Cause 2 i couldn't get the same with everything maxed out, but you probably would need a higher end machine to do that. With everything maxed out i was getting like 20fps but when i turned off the GPU water effect and toned down a couple other things i was getting a solid 60fps on the in game benchmark tests. Batman arkham asylum and the newer arkham city look positively stunning and smooooooth. The picture is great on this machine and the sound is quite good especially with the subwoofer. The power supply practically needs it own carrying case! Seriously this is the biggest brick i've ever seen on a notebook. The keyboard is very nice as is the track pad. the buttons on the trackpad have quite a bit of travel and feel kind of soft, but not mushy. The track pad also supports two finger rotation and pinch to zoom and 2 finger scrolling and 3 finger aero conrol of the windows 7 windows ala macbook (although it's nowhere near as smooth as the mac, but i didn't get this machine for smooth window navigation). I LOVE the rubberized feel of the plastic of the case. I also love that the machine doesn't come with 100 pieces of "bloatware"

the 750gb hard drivecomes partitioned with about 300 (drive c) for OS and other programs and then a drive D (presumably for your gaming data) is about 400gb. There is still an open expansion bay for another hard drive I believe. Now remember, this is kind of the "bottom of the line" G75 with the 2gb graphics card (the 660) and the processors on the higher end units run a bit faster. So far the machine stays quite cool and it not even as noisey as my macbook pro (and not nearly as hot, you could make toast on my macbook when i was runing games in bootcamp). I don't know a lot about gaming machines but i've read that you can't just look at the graphics card or the processor but you have to look at everything together including how well the machine can cool itself because that can affect how well the gpu runs. I'm sure there are faster notebooks out there, but for 1500 bucks I am beside myself. I use an xbox 360 wireless controller and it works flawlessly, just make sure you download the 64bit driver from microsoft. For steam users, install it to the larger partition (the D drive). There is plenty of room on the 400gb partition. Even if every game you use is 10gb (which they usually are not) That's a lot of games with no external drive and you still have the C partition to store files on, plus you can always get another drive installed. I'm giving it 4 stars just to be conservative, but so far the only thing that's a bit off-putting is it's sheer size. it's much deeper than my 17 inch macbook and won't even fit (width-wise) into the sleeve of my 17inch backpack although it barely fits the length. I had to order an alienware backpack that accomodates the larger machines with the 17.3 screens. I travel A LOT and it is going to be really fantastic to have a complete gaming library with me wherever I go! Unless you're an uber-geek I would highly recommend this unit. Im sure it will do me for several years, but then again, technology is such that you're constantly kicking yourself for not waiting for the next better, faster, quieter, cooler, more power efficient thing to come along.

Oh, by the way, the unit is lighter than it appears. Still heavy, but it is a desktop replacment, so that's just part and parcel...Hope this helps

Honest reviews on ASUS Republic of Gamers G75VW-AS71 17.3-Inch Gaming Laptop

I just bought my new Asus Laptop June 2 at a Best Buy. The unit I received has slightly different specs than the one listed here however they are minimal. The laptop I purchased has only 8gigs of RAM instead of 16 but has a 1TB Hard Drive. Besides that it is the same machine. However, I found it at Best Buy for 1299 instead of 1499 (which is rare because I never expect Best Buy to have the best price). I ended up paying 1566 after 5% tax but that included two year comprehensive warranty, Microsoft office, and two years of antivirus which I couldn't pass up. I went straight home to try it out and so far I am impressed. The unit looks beautiful with the matte screen and the fingerprint resistant finish. The resolution is stunning and the backlit keyboard is solid. (though the keys feel a bit cheap I am not at all concerned)

As my main concern was graphics, the first thing I did was download Skyrim from Steam. Booting up the game for the first time showed me how this unit is worth every penny. Many reviews talk generally about the graphics of their system but at the end of the day, I want to be able to say how it handles specific games. That being said, Skyrim looks FANTASTIC. I played it on my xbox360 in HD and the performance on this laptop makes the 360 version look like its from the 90's. The lighting effects, graphical details, and resolution are all amazing and the smooth framerate blew me away. I couldn't believe how well it was rendering the dense foliage and textures without missing a beat. I am confident this baby will run anything I throw at it for years to come. I also noticed that getting my music onto ITunes was fast as well. On my old computers, uploading hundreds of files into the program often caused it to crash and took hours. I got all my music up in a matter of minutes.

One thing I did notice was the vibrations of the DVD drive when it is reading a disk. I didn't worry at all but you always prefer quiet disk drives. As I don't plan on using much media from DVD/CD's the concern is minimal. Also the sound quality is rich and there seems to be a built in sub woofer but the volume doesn't quite reach loud enough for my tastes. However, I have external speakers whenever I really need great volume so this is another non issue for me. I have yet to find any real cons to this system yet although I have only had it for a day.

The computer runs very quiet and looks like a professional/nerdy mix of materials and design. I would also like to emphasize that I did lots of research before arriving at this laptop. I found that it had minimal negative reviews with many good ones that matched my graphical expectations and price point. While some people may complain about the hefty size of the computer or the large AC adapter brick that accompanies the unit, you must remember that this is a desktop replacement gaming laptop and it serves its role admirably. I would strongly recommend this laptop to anyone looking for a gaming powerhouse laptop without breaking the bank and is willing to sacrifice portability for power.

**Update**

I bought a SanDisk 120 GIG SSD on Amazon and went to Best Buy to let them install it. The warrenty I purchased covered the instalation and migration of the OS to the SSD. It took them three days to complete the job and I now have both hard drives in the machine: the 120SSD and the 1Terabyte 5400RMP-HHD. I have to say it was a great idea to upgrade. My computer boots in 20 seconds (as oppsed to about 60 before)I was able to load saves in Skyrim in five second as opposed to 10-15 seconds. This is as fast as I have ever seen a computer run. I store all OS related files and programs as well as games on the SSD and my music, docs, and movies on the HHD. The people at best buy did remove the recovery partition, but I can take it back if something happens. I highly reccomend doing a similar upgrade if you have an in store warrenty or if you know how to do it yourself.

I have only had this notebook for two days now and would like to focus this review on my first impressions and experiences with it. I received it two days ago when I got home from work. After charging the battery for a couple of hours I turned it on and it went through a process of setting up some things in Windows and I had to enter my wireless key. Everything went smoothly. I was surprised to see only five icons on the desktop-Recycle Bin, Asus Vibe Fun Center (whatever that is)Asus Web Storage, eManual, and McAfee! I suspected that there might be some anti-virus software lurking and sure enough, a one month free trial from McAfee which I had five days to activate! Amazon didn't say anything about that.

So, knowing I would need to have an anti-virus program, I went to the McAfee website to activate the temporary account and ended up buying a year's subscription online for around $70 and downloaded it. Before it could download, McAfee had to first uninstall the free one month anti-virus trial program. I guess if I opted out it would have been up to me to figure out how to uninstall it entirely before installing Norton. Anyway, I bought it from them and everything seems OK.

Now the first order of business was to create the four Recovery DVD's. Using some HP DVD+R 4.7GB, the first DVD took 45 minutes to burn, the second and third 10 minutes each, and the fourth 7 minutes for a total of 72 minutes. Had I checked the box "Fully verify data when burning disc" it would have been longer.

After waiting through many Windows updates, the machine seemed to be functioning very well. I downloaded Google Chrome and installed Adobe Lightroom 4 without any problems at all. I noticed a previous reviewer had a blue screen due to playing a you tube music video, so I tried one from Little Richard and it worked perfectly. If Richard can't give you a BSOD, nobody can!

I was hesitant to get a 17 inch screen, thinking that it would be too small for gaming, but when you sit in front of this notebook it looks a lot larger than 17 inches! I love it, and the matte finish is excellent, as is the illuminated keyboard (you can vary the intensity). I feel very good about buying this notebook. I originally ordered the model with the gtx 670 video card, but I had it backordered for ten days and nothing was happening, so I got this one. I don't think it will matter much to me because I am more interested in photography than gaming, except when it comes to Thief.

Backlit keyboard is the best feature and makes using this laptop far more versatile. Unfortunately, the keyboard itself is not as effective for everyday use. The center area of the keyboard is not as well supported so you have to punch the keys a lot harder to get them to register on the display. A large HDD (320GB) and 4gigs of user memory, along with Intel Centrino 2.0GHz CPU, make this 64bit Vista PC performance's better than most laptops in the under $600 price range. The WEI is only 3.7 because the integrated graphics support, although "accelerated", is not as good as most full size Desktops with dedicated plug-in video card. The 16" LCD is a true 16x9 widescreen display and looks absolutely stunning. Also built-in to this laptop is 1.3MP webcam, microphone and two speakers. HDMI output connector is a nice bonus. Only thing missing is Bluetooth support and a BluRay DVD player, but at a significantly higher cost. Internet WiFi access is very fast and makes for a seemingly much more reliable connection than my even my two year old high end desktop PC. All in all a very good value and one of the few Notebook PC available at any price with a backlit keyboard.

...Never had a single problem with it. It was finally stolen while I was on vacation or I'm sure I would still be using it. It's a workhorse.

I'm not a gamer, so I can't speak to that, but it ran every application I threw at it.

Drawbacks: It's heavy.

I never replaced the battery in all that time and it was starting to go bad on me.

And, the power connector was a weak spot. I had to reinforce it to keep the cord from disengaging.

Still, a great laptop. I don't think it locked up once in three years.

I bought this laptop when it was still in stores. Keyboard is the worst part, you have to hit every key in the center an firmly, the keys started popping off mine in a couple months. The touch controls work when they want and will sometimes flicker on and off.

This computer cannot play 1080p or 720p files, it struggled to use itune's visualizer. Games don't run well if ever. WoW gets about 18-22fps on the lowest settings. The battery has a life of about 1 1/2 hours and will stop working after 6 months (I've had 2) whether or not you use it.

Max is 4gb of ram

Does not have a dedicated video card like it says on the box (shared 1024mb)

Not a full sized keyboard

Don't let the gloss screen pull you in you won't be watching anything hi-res on this computer.

The backlit keyboard has never had a problem and the 4 usb ports and hdmi port and the fact that it had an expansion card slot are the only reason I'm giving it 2 stars. IMO this laptop was not worth the 800 I bought it for and is defiantly not worth more than 200-300 in-box much less used. Gateway was once a trusted brand but they've really gone down hill in recent years.

HP Spectre XT Ultrabook 13t-2100

I own and operate an Internet Service provider. As such I am very demanding of my portable computer.

I often have to debug equipment in field conditions, including operating at the end of a bucket truck boom in the rain, snow or sleet.

In the past our little company has used ASUS 1201-N Netbooks for our field operations. They work well enough to keep the network running, but are cheap enough that if you drop one off a bucket, run it over with a van, leave it at a POP or otherwise destroy it, it won't break the bank.

I bought one of these HP 13t-2100 Ultrabooks to replace my latest 1201-N (R.I.P.). The key difference between this book and other ultrabooks is that this one has a RJ-45 port, which is essential in my line of work.

I have been very happy with my decision. The frame is sturdy and doesn't have any wobble to it. It is substantially faster than the netbook I was using. It is running Windows 8, but don't hold that against it.

The WiFi drivers are top notch. It connects to new networks easily and recovers from sleep mode almost instantly. When it recovers it connects up at once and immediately draws an IP address.

The one I bought doesn't have external media for OS re-installation (really guys, just throw in 32GB USB keychain, I'll even pay extra for it!), instead it uses around 20% of the hard disk to store a "recovery" partition with the OS on it. Since the disk only has 128GB of storage on it, this is kind of a bummer.

Pluses:

Low Cost

Great Battery Life

Solid Feeling

Attractive

Backlit Keyboard

Screen Brightness & Resolution

Hot Keys

Fast Sleep/Wake

Minuses:

Squirrley touchpad (hard to keep mouse on queue)

Recovery partition takes 20% of hard disk

All in all I'd recommend this computer to anyone who needs a lightweight companion that works well, but isn't so expensive that you worry about breaking or losing it.

I buy, sell, and repair computers for a living, so alot of laptops pass through my hands. In the last year, I have personally owned Compaqs, Dells, IBMs, Acers, Sonys, and other laptops; including Pentium 3m, AMD Athlon XPm, and Pentium 4m models. I have held onto my T40 for sevral reasons: size, portability, battery life, speed, cost, reliability.. the list is endless! I even tried to upgrade to a Z60 a few months ago (because of the fingerprint reader, built-in sd card reader, 2.0ghz cpu, etc..) but decided to keep the T40 and re-sell the newer Z60 for the same price I bought it for (something I NEVER do, I always try to turn a profit!!!)

The Z60 was nice, but not as fast as my t40... the Dells and Compaqs and Sonys don't even come close to either. I use Verizon Mobile Broadband, and also own several wireless-g usb adapters, so the built-in wireless-b card doesn't bother meeven when I do use it, it's plenty fast (11 mbps is faster than most cable connections anyway; unless you're networking and streaming multimedia between a few pc's it should be more than enough!!!)

Mine also has gigabit ethernet, so on the rare occasion that I plug in, it's great...

I upgraded my t40 to 2 gigs of ram for $140, by watching Staples like a hawk and catching 1 gig ddr for $70 each on sale, then I sold my original 512 for $30, so it really only cost $110.

This is laptop #4, and the least powerful of them all. I have a state-of-the-art Toshiba U-305, a Dell 700, and an HP dv2000 which I love. But I've always wanted a ThinkPad to address all the kudos I've heard.

Does it really have that great tactile keyboard feel? Does the battery really last that long? Does it really work like a horse and function like a fine-tuned machine? Does the wifi card really pick up like a magnet? Yep.

I got mine refurbished and have never worried once that I needed an aftermarket warranty. The keyboard is like a luxury car you want to travel cross-county in. The battery is wonderfully long-lasting, and, leaving behind all the pretensions of the 'latest and greatest' laptops--my ThinkPad is the one I would miss most.

And once you get a taste of the ThinkVantage IBM support, you'll understand why some things really do live up to their reputation. No cursor jumping (like my old Sony), and the biggest surprise was the super brite screen (on an IBM?) and the effortless way a 2003 model laptop can perform in a 2008 world. Sweet!

This is my second laptop and I bought it after I saw my friend's ThinkPad. It's all you want from a laptop: it's small and fast.

Size: It's light and small which is very important because I travel with it, but the 14" screen is not too small and the quality of the screen is quite good.

Speed: It's not bad for what you're getting and it doesn't have a ton of pre-loaded programs on it, which is really what drags down the speed.

Mechanics: All my previous computers have been Dell and I really like the keyboard, the mechanics and the build of this IBM. In fact, I like it so much I bought another one.

Refurbished: I've read of other horror stories about refurbished computers, but the first one I bought was absolutely immaculate. I wouldn't have known that it was reburbished unless someone had told me.

Last but not least: This still comes with XP and not liking change I hurried to get the last of these XP machines before everything becomes Windows 7. I had the first one for about 6 months now and knock on wood, everything seems A-OK, I highly recommend it

This laptop arrived excellently packed. I have not yet used it extensively, but so far so good. For the price I paid, it has a lot more features than a new one for the same amount of money. I have had a good experience with refurbished products, so I decided to try a purchasing a laptop that way. - Ask me again in two months or so.

Bought this laptop a little over a year ago to use now and then when traveling. Shipped with battery virtually dead and wouldn't hold a charge only after 10 minutes of use. Used it mostly with the power cord and it worked okay for first six months then starting having general issues with the computer. Also, Laptop did not come with wireless card. I purchased a wireless card and then I had to change the computer Bios to get the wireless card to work. The bios change did work although very risky to do this. Then after about a year the computer won't power on the display although the laptop powers on. Just an okay computer and would not buy another after issues and problems.

I did lots of research before purchasing a laptop. I settled on this one because it seemed to be the most bang for the buck. I have had no problems with it, and I've had it for about 3 months now. In fact, I do everything on it. I love it! The screen is huge. It's not super light, but that was to be expected. It has a great battery life, and I've had no problems with opening multiple webpages as one user said.

The reason this didn't get 5 stars from me is because of the keyboard. It seems really cheap and plasticky. In fact, I can actually see the entire keyboard moving up and down when I'm typing really fast. Doesn't hinder performance, just seems cheap. Other than that, this thing is fantastic! I do recommend it!

Oh, also, Windows 8 is amazing. I'm sure that people who don't like it are those same people who complain everytime Facebook makes a change to their timeline... people who don't like change. It has all the features Windows 7 has, just enhanced. Give it some time and you'll get used to it.

Honest reviews on Toshiba Satellite C875D-S7330 17.3-Inch Laptop (Satin Black Trax)

***Edit*** Ok the computer worked fine for about a month and a half. I never got used to windows 8. If I wanted a tablet I would have bought one. So out of nowhere I try turning my laptop on and it says automatic repair. Ive seen this on windows 7 before so I thought no big deal. Except it tried to repair and failed so it restarted and did a loop of that. I tried to go into safe mode but windows 8 took out the easy feature to do so. You have a split second to press the button to get into safe mode and I never could. I called Toshiba to get them to repair it and they wanted to charge me for shipping and to back up my harddrive. It was only 2 months old and I couldn't get anybody there to work with me. Instead I took it to a computer repair place and got it backed up and amazon was awesome and let me return it for a full refund.

***EDIT***

Big fan of Toshiba. Had a computer crap out lately so I bought this one. I love mat surfaces for computers, but not on the touch pad. It feels a little repulsive to move the cursor. Also not a fan of windows 8. It was made for tablets and I didn't buy a tablet. Does not look like on a 17 inch laptop.

I've had this lap top for about 4 months now. At first I hated it because of Windows 8 but once i figured it out I decided I could live with it although I still hate it. So, here I am 4 months later and I have a lap top that is getting slower by the day! Internet explorer is so slow that I feel like I'm 13 again and using dial up to surf the web! The computer is slow in everything it does, from research I've done that seems to be a pretty common thing with windows 8. The touch pad is really sucky. It's rough and textured and to be honest..it made my finger sore for the first couple of weeks I used the computer! So, I guess, if you can get past the slowness, and the sucky touch pad you will be okay. Me personally? I just bought a new computer (with windows 7) and it'll be here next week. Anyone wanna buy a used Toshiba? Ha! Ha!

Dell XPS XPS15-1579sLV 15-Inch Laptop
Customer Ratings: 4 stars

There aren't many laptops on the market that can offer the ergonomics and build quality of this new XPS 15. I wanted an Ultrabook like feel/battery life, but with a larger 1080 screen and disc drive. I have never before been impressed by a Dell product, but they have clearly stepped up their game and this fit the bill perfectly.

I have been using this computer for about a month now, and I honestly have 0 complaints. While this is the most basic XPS 15 offered, it still gives excellent performance. The i5 on this particular model is only dual core, but I have had no problems gaming or with any other task I have given it. Coming from a quad core AMD on my previous laptop, this processor hands down performs better, not to mention, I can usually squeeze a good 4+ hours of use out of the battery.

The screen is brilliant and the fact that it is 1080p makes the 15" screen feel like a 20" screen when carrying out everyday tasks. If you're looking for something sleek and solid with an HD screen like--dare I say--a MacBook, look no further. Perhaps I was being picky but in looking through just about every Windows laptop currently available, this was the only one of its kind. Compare the price of this to that of a similar MacBook Pro and the XPS 15 is a clear winner. I have to agree with the other reviewer that said this laptop is worth every penny.

One thing to note is that the hard drive seems to be more of an HDD/SSD hybrid drive. From what I can tell, you cannot access the 32gb SSD portion independently from the HDD portion. It will act as a single 500gb drive, but the 32gb SSD gives it some sort of "cache" that improves performance and boot time.

UPDATE: Buyer beware. I really like this laptop but there are some well known issues with the wifi due to the aluminum. Under certain scenarios, you WILL NOT get the same throughput as you will on any other cheaper laptop. I also ended up purchasing another one of these. The 2nd unit I purchased has recently started making an incredibly annoying squeaking sound that sounds like it is coming from the hard drive.

It is great laptop, mine came with some bad wifi issue but that was resolved by Dell quickly.

The look and feel of this laptop is very good and when you will hold such a kind of laptop, you would never want to go for something below level from this Laptop.

You will not find any information about this laptop with value as XPS15-1579sLV as that value is amazon internal, which was confirmed by Dell to me.

To get more appropriate value, look for DELL XPS 15 L521X. By searching this you can find all the information that you need.

Great value of the price and functionality wise too.

The Screen 1080p quality is really amazing and boot time is 3 seconds, that is true 3 seconds from the time you press power on button to see Windows 8 screen.

This laptop seems OK after using it for a month or so. But you will spend a fair amount of time uninstalling the Lenovo crapware that comes pre-installed. Plus, their tech support is awful. If you go to Lenovos site you will find a bunch of broken links, and won't even be able to find the user guide if you need it. You will have to download the user guide from a third party site. My experience with Lenovo so far puts it pretty low on my trusted vendors list.

I bought a Dell E6510 as a desktop replacement, and it's fabulous. I haven't turned on my old computer since I finished moving my files.

Before you buy, find out what screen you're getting. The E6510 has three options: 1366x768 ("HD"), 1600x900 ("HD+"), and 1920x1080 ("FHD"). I got the gorgeous FHD screen which lets me comfortably have small but sharp browser window, editor window, and debugger window visible simultaneously. I also got 4GB DRAM, 500GB hard disk, and Win 7 Pro.

Build quality is excellent. Drivers are stable. Everything just plain works. Lots of USB ports. All the tools I want: WiFi, SD card reader, Bluetooth... The 9-cell battery protrudes but gives several hours of run time. Both touchpad and TrackPoint work great.

Nits: To make room for large top-facing speakers (which sound pretty good), the keyboard doesn't have a separate number pad; using the Fn key to select numbers is lame. Dell docks don't have key locks like IBM docks. To use Microsoft Backup, you must disable the "Latitude ON" feature (which instantly boots a cached OS and starts your copy of Outlook to read e-mail) by converting D: to NTFS. Unfortunately, Microsoft Backup fails when it encounters a FAT32 partition. The computer is big and heavy, like all the machines in this class.

Pleasant surprises: I didn't have to delete any craplets! Dell accessories (spare power adapters, docks) are very inexpensive and readily available from many sources. The i5-520M processor is incredibly fast.

Just two regrets: I wish I'd sprung for the backlit keyboard, and I wish I'd gone with the 6-cell battery.

I have had a number of laptops over the past 30 years and this one is solid but not great. My last laptop is an HP. The set up for the HP was well thought out with the owner's manual right on the desktop. There was limited paper documentation with the Thinkpad.EDGE15 Amd P340 2GB/320 Dvr C W7-64 I wanted to upgrade the memory on my Thinkpad Edge, but finding information was not either intuitive or easy. I still cannot tell you how I finally found it. It is on the drive too but there is no direct button to the owner's manual on the Thinkpad. I still do not know what the buttons above the touch pad are or how to use them. I searched for that information too. Lenovo needs to improve their owner manual for this product. The information is there but it takes some searching to find.

The computer works well, but does not measure up to my HP. My HP laptop is a 17" (the Thinkpad is 15.6") and the numerical keypad on it makes a difference in usability. I cannot use the Alt key on my Thinkpad to create alt-key icons. My HP is also dual-core but was large so not as portable as the Thinkpad. Of course, the Thinkpad has better graphics and speed than my three year old HP.

Considering what I paid for this product, it works well for my needs. It is a good entry level product.

I got this laptop and the backspace button stuck a bit. There is an annoying red light on the "thinkpad" logo that is always on; on both the front of the cpu and right by the keyboard. This laptop doesn't come with a 9-key pad on the keyboard. 2GB is not enough to run windows 7 (64bit) smoothly. You could upgrade to 8GB but each 4GB card will run about $75, might as well spend the money up front on a better machine and get a better processor as well. It ran slow out of the box so I returned it and got a Gateway 4GB 500MB with a full keyboard and spent only 13 dollars more. I won't even think about getting another Lenovo. Lenovo is IBM's personal computer department that was sold to China. I'm glad they stuck to the mainframes, good thinking IBM.
