I bought this laptop to replace my old Dell and I love it! It boots in around 20-30 seconds and is really fast in High Performance mode. It can even run Starcraft 2 with no problems. For the people that say it's slow, have you looked to see what mode it's in? It has 4 operating modes. High Performance, Entertainment, Quiet Office, and Battery Saver mode. It comes with Battery Saver mode on default so make sure to change it. If your looking for a really good laptop for a fair price then this is the one to get.

Update:

I have now had this laptop for almost three years and it is still holding up very well. By now the hardware is slightly outdated, but it still performs exceptionally. Over time the laptop has slowed down a little bit, but I have counteracted by upgrading the RAM prebuilt into the laptop. I still use it for mid-level computer games and for other day to day uses which it is very well suited to do. If you take of this laptop it will perform great for a long period of time and makes a great cheap device.

I only docked a star from it's rating because of the slow down over time and because the laptop is actually an ASUS K53U and not an A53U. I have no idea why Amazon has it listed as an A53U as you can find no details on the ASUS site about an A53U. Otherwise this is a great laptop!

This review is not going to be extremely in-depth, because I bought this computer for my dad for Christmas and only used it for about 2 days to get everything set up on it. Side note: My personal computers are Macs, but I am not extremely biased on operating systems, and I think Windows did a good job with 7. That being said, here is my initial impression on the computer.

The shipment of the laptop was quick and free (thanks Amazon Prime)! Packaging was minimum, but definitely secured and padded the laptop, which is a bonus in my eyes.

Upon opening the packaging, the computer looked sleek. It seemed like it was made not as study as a MacBook Pro (my Mac side showing), but it also wasn't cheaply made. It's made with plastic, which allows for it to be lighter and hopefully more durable.

Windows 7 Home Premium came with it, which is a nice upgrade from the basic, but it came loaded with all the Asus add-ons and slowed down the performance greatly. On start-up, the computer was using about ~65-70% of the memory performance. There was A LOT of programs running that was bogging down the performance. The very first thing I did was install a fresh copy of Windows 7 Home Premium and wiped the hard drive of all the nasty programs. The Windows 7 disc didn't come with the computer, so it may help to have a friend that has a physical disc and you can just load your OEM Windows key that came with the computer (on the box).

Once a fresh Windows 7 was installed, the computer ran like a dream. It is mainly being used for web surfing and light office work. I haven't received a call with any problems with it, so it's holding up!

If you are looking for a high-performing laptop for gaming or other CPU-intensive tasks, this obviously isn't the best choice computer for you. But for daily web browsing, word processing and less demanding CPU/GPU tasks, I recommend this laptop!

I highly recommend installing a fresh Windows 7 as soon as you pull it out of the box, and of course use protection! Windows has free software that works great for personal computers. You can't go wrong.

We purchased this to replace a Gateway laptop and I have to say so far this ASUS is an excellent little computer! Very easy to get this up and running and it loads pages quickly. The warranty that comes with the laptop is one of the best that I've seen. For the money you can't go wrong with this!

I bought this (ASUS A53U-EH11) laptop from Amazon.com because I needed another laptop to carry with me when I went on a trip.

My other ASUS has been a very good product and is still in very good condition, but it has programs that I would not need on vacation, also it has plugins that makes it harded to make portable.

I am very satisfied with this product, and I got it at a very low price.

Thank you Amazon, Pops

bought 2 of these last week. First thing i noticed when box was opened was the shiny mocha color which was very attractive. booted up and graphics was great. Performance after installing some programs was very fast. One problem was that the speakers were very soft for altec lansing. Tried everything to get them to boosts even went into the bios but it was locked on setting "4". So headphones or external speakers required for good listening. Pc is very good for the price and gonna purchase another one soon.

I was especially disappointed when I plugged in my broadband modem and the RealTek Global Controller wouldn't recognize the ISP IP address. ASUS told me it was Comcast's fault because the laptop diagnostic stated it was a broadband issue... a quick ipconfig command in DOS revealed that the laptop was reading the IP addresses correctly... 3 more calls to ASUS after a DNS flush and reset, winsock reset and system recovery that took 8 hours total (the first call we reloaded the driver for the adapter). 2 of the four reps at ASUS spoke clear english, and 2 had very broken accents that just prolonged the agony. I finally had to return the product when ASUS concluded that the unit was faulty. It seemed to be OK at first, but without connectivity... and the service hassle... what was the point? I would have liked to see how the unit performed actually... unfortunately the bad experience will probably steer me away from ASUS. The keys and unit were quiet enough, the right and left click buttons were a bit noisy, but that is no big deal to me. Startup into Windows 7 was very quick and shutdown even quicker but I hadn't loaded my recording studio onto the machine yet either. The touch pad was REALLY sensitive... which can be a plus or minus depending on what you are used to.

The computer works really good. Had a few cosmetic flaws. I was afraid it was going to have a bunch of junk files and stuff left behind from someone else, but there was only extra programs. Some useful and some not. I was scared to buy it used at first, but now I'm glad I did and saved the extra money.

This is my first time buying a Mac, so I opted for a used Macbook with some decent specs. I am so impressed by this laptop. Even being 4 years old it doesn't give any impression that it lacks speed or capacity. I wouldn't dare buy a 4 year old PC, but this is becoming one of my favorite purchases. Love it.

The computer was shipped promptly. It seemed just as it was described. Two days past the last day it could be returned, the hard drive died. So it ended up costing a lot more than the $400 I paid for it.

Honest reviews on Apple MacBook MB403LL/A -(White)

I bought my MacBook refurbished and am very happy with it. While I wish it had a bigger hard drive (mine has 160 GB) and more RAM (mine has 4 GB; I can add 2 more GB) it does a good job with most laptop tasks.

As of this writing, it is running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. This is subject to change.

There are times the fan kicks on and the laptop becomes really hot.

I have a great laptop stand for my MacBook by roadtools and it helps keep the heat away from me.

One minor point: Heat does radiate out of the bottom left corner. Plus there is a slightly sharp ridge around the MacBook's edge. I find this ridge slightly irritating to the skin of my wrists.

I wish Apple still had the MacBook in its lineup as it is a nice bridge between the MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro.

Sony VAIO VGN-FW373J/B 16.4-Inch Laptop - Black

I was going to wait a bit longer before writing this review of the new Sony FW-373J/H 16.4" 1080P Hi Definition Notebook computer, but it's so impressive, with outstanding performance, utility, standard features, software, and has hardware packaging that is 2nd to none in this price range of c.$1250+/notebooks, that I couldn't wait to put it in perspective, compared to other "media center" notebooks.

I bought this Sony for my wife, but it's such a gem, has incredible performance characteristics and utility features like the Blu-Ray ROM (Sony Optiarc BC5500S v1.75 firmware-Oct, 2008) optical drive, a very efficient, speedy 2.4Ghz C2Duo Intel SCR(P)-8600 CPU w/3MB L2 Cache, running a 1066Mhz FSB (front side system bus, the pathway between the 4GB of PC-6400 800Mhz SDRAM and the hard drive, ie faster is better(!)--and this is as fast as it gets-FSB's in notebooks), that I've been using it too. A LOT!

Don't forget the 7200-RPM SATA II 2.5" HD, which is easily reached via a 2-screw trap door on the bottom of the case (as is the SDRAM, but that's only 1 screw!), which has plenty of room for most people's work, media collection, photos, applications for business and pleasure, et al. I can't imagine "upgrading/updating" this particular HD setup, as 320GB is as big as a 7200RPM HD gets right now...maybe IF Hitachi, Western Digital, or Samsung comes up with a 500GB 7200RPM notebook HD there will be a reason to upgrade, but not now!

Tonight we watched "Transporter 3" using the Sony notebook as the player, the Jason Statham action-sequel in Blu-Ray ROM format, on our Samsung 52" HDTV, the TOC (Touch of Class) Series 8000x model w/50,000 Contrast Ratio, 120Mhz Video Codec Switching, 4ms response time, etc, arguably the best LCD available today, and it was just astonishing & fantastic! We hooked everything up via a simple 10-feet-long-HDMI-Cable using the Sony FW-373J/H as the "player" with the standard Blu-Ray on-board player built into the Windows Vista 64-bit Home Premium OS by Sony engineers, called "InterVideo® WinDVD® BD for VAIO" (quite a mouthful, yah? They could have just called it "Sony BluRay Player" but no, go figure!).

All you do is hook up your HDTV to one end of the HDMI cable after "sourcing it", attach the other end to the Sony notebook, insert the Blu-Ray movie into the optical drive, (with preferences enabled this happens...) and BAM! The video starts playing on the TV instantly, with full on-screen controls available for menus, setup, etc for the movie. Crazy-Bitchin-Good!

That was the deal-sealer, seeing that Blu-Ray movie via the Sony notebook tonight!! It WAS CLEAR, CLEAN, PERFECT, EVERYTHING YOU WANTED in clarity, depth of field, all that Blu-Ray HDTV goodness rolled up into a great action-movie experience like "Transporter 3"... and to see the new notebook's player and optical drive doing the duty, putting the film up onscreen with such a quick one-two-three "Play!" sequence, well, it was just great! The sound was fantastic, everything synched-up correctly with our Marantz-6800-powered audio system, enabled by a JBL Studio Sound Speaker System in all its 16-inch bass-reflex glory, and I am telling you it played purrrfectly through the Sony notebook's optical drive. No Hill For a Climber!

Now that experience is out of the way, and fully described, because it IS a fantastic feature to be able to play Blu-Ray media through the notebook, but let's talk about the CPU, the memory, the OS, the unbelievably full-featured, and strong ATI Mobile RADEON® HD PCI-Express Video Card w/512MB of discrete, dedicated DDR2 VRAM, with get this, 2280MB of "burst VRAM" available via shared memory from the SDRAM/HD system! Holy Smokes! That's quite a package!!

Some desktops don't have a better video card system than the Sony does, and this thing just SMOKES in performing its rituals, whether it's working magic with the 16.4" 1920 x 1080P NATIVE HD widescreen back-lit LCD display on photos in Corel's PC photo program, displaying 2 side-by-side web pages with Flash-Player enabled, or just simply going about the business of mundane things like working behind-the-scenes to enable crisp, clean, precise rendering of any normal project you can think of: Word Processing, film editing in Sony Vegas 5 Pro, or just plain 'being beautiful'...it's a stunning display of video power all-around!! I can't say enough about how the ATI Mobile HD Video Card w/512MB of DDR2 VRAM/SDRAM performs, because it's the best notebook display I've seen in a long, long time...bar none, including all Mac Pro displays, right up to the 17" Apple widescreen in their top-of-the-line $2700 notebook.

Our LCD screen, apparently a Samsung device as best as I could tell (they are the No.1 producer of LCD technology devices worldwide), has NO DEAD PIXELS, not a one to be found! It's clear, clean, crisp, responsive and fast in any and all circumstances, has no big "footprint" like the 18.4" widescreen notebook LCD's do, and yet there you go, there's native 1080P display power all day, all night! It's truly a fantastic, feature-laden display, one I can't say enough about.

The C2Duo 2.4Ghz CPU is F A S T, don't think it isn't! You know it's good when you see the Windows Performance scores of 5.4 to 5.9 on everything but "Gaming graphics" where the notebook scores "5.0", oh well, it's built by humans, yes? It does have a small weakness there, but that's about it! The 4GB of 800Mhz PC-6400 SDRAM does a nice job with almost any assignment, ie it's enough for virtually all Windows Vista tasks, throw in 4 to 5 open programs, some background FM music via FireFM in FireFox 3.0.7 (ditch Windows Explorer as your browser first chance you get!), and there's still 1GB of SDRAM availble for "burst" assignments.

You can order up twin 4GB DIMMs to make 8GB of SDRAM in the machine, but at this time it's prohibitively expensive @ c.$400 a DIMM, so equipping the notebook with 8GB of SDRAM is stupid right now...wait until summer, or later, when Samsung's chip supply dries up (they cornered the market on the 4GB DIMMs apparently), and you can buy a pair of 4GB DIMMs for $400 or less for both, and then it'll be a good thing to do...but not right now.

As for the network adapter, which is an Intel PCI-Express WLAN card, with A, B, G, and "Spec N"-qualified high-speed abilities, it's so seamless in its operation that I almost forgot to mention it! It just works fantastic. You should have seen my eyes when I installed iTunes 8.1 for PC the other day, and hit the "shared" Library key in iTunes, and voila! Up popped my 2TB Apple TV/iTunes Library from my G5 "SuperSystem," across my studio over in the "serious computer territory", yes, right there on the PC's desktop there was an unlimited supply of iTunes goodness, some 200GB of music, and more than 1.4TB of AppleTV movies ready for sharing on the PC! My Lordie, that was a fantastic surprise!! So I didn't have to install a bunch of music for my wife's edification...she could simply "share" my rather substantial Apple iTunes music system from across the room, a coup'de'etat if I've ever made one happen...PC and Macs living in harmony, together, functioning perfectly fine using the same music. Now that's KUHL!

What else is nice, and stands out? Well, the touch-pad works 110% to my liking, if you're not using a Mini-BlueTooth Mouse like my LogiTech V470, which only costs $38 here at Amazon.com, so there you go! Another strong point, the notebook's "A2DP" BlueTooth (stereo BlueTooth for headphones, earphones, and v2.1.x BlueTooth for external devices like a mouse) is another wonderful standard feature, so you can utilize the USB ports (3 of them, located on the right, front side of the case) for what they were meant to be used for: peripherals like a printer, scanner, etc. There's also a FireWire port, for those of you who still own FireWire movie cameras, or have external HD's with FireWire 800/400 connections, (with Oxford 924 or 912 bridge boards...these are good things), they are all GOOD TO GO with this notebook, with the conveniently placed port on the left side of the case.

You know, I should say something about how this notebook LOOKS! It's just great! It has spacey curves over to the heavy-duty magnesium-alloy body's end, which is at a set of HD hinges that will never, ever creak, groan, lack support for the display, and it looks T H I N, and subtle, and even though it weighs some 6.7 lbs w/standard battery, it doesn't look heavy and overblown, like so many of the "big generation" of PC notebooks do these days. The brushed magnesium finsh is really groovy! Clean looking! The media controls over the back-right edge of the chassis, up by the screen are appropriately placed, and work well for home-base media movies onscreen, or playing music with the optical drive, whatever!

I am glad I held out for the grey case vs. the black case, aren't all of you in this group? It just looks G R E A T with the alloy body, the two compliment each other, sort of "flow into each other" and work with the Sony Style form to make up a stunning notebook masterpiece. As a practical exercise, the Sony wins, to me anyway it does...it's just so "handsome and practically sexy-looking"... In so many notebooks there's nothing but plastic and buttons, and this machine rocks the house with heavy-duty doses of class, style, and grace of design. The key placement is a bit unusual unless you're a previous Sony owner, with the keys placed/vertically surfaced OUT of the top of the case, but with a scant 2mm of travel per key, they feel right-on, and correct for the application.

I bought an Antec® notebook cooler, the twin-fan design alloy and plastic device, for the notebook with the order, so I can't comment on its ability to cool itself without a notebook cooler, all I can say is you have to be a little crazy to NOT have an Antec (or other fine brand) cooler if you are constantly using your notebook...it's just simply the way to go. HEAT KILLS NOTEBOOKs, and the only sure way to avoid that problem is to invest in a mere $28 shipped notebook cooler like the Antec, which runs off one of the USB ports with a "pass-through" connector so you don't lose the port, and BAM! Instant Coolness! All the time.

That about wraps up my take on the new Sony FW-series notebook that we have had for a scant 2.5 weeks now, but this thing leaves an impression on you, trust me, it does! As to its so-called weaknesses? I honestly can't think of a one. Its price is more than competitive with anything in its class; the feature-set is the best there is right now; the Blu-Ray and BlueTooth features are especially pleasant, and functional, something you can use all the time; that fast 7200RPM 320GB SATA II (Hitachi, in my case! ...Hitachi is The Best!!) HD really cranks out the jams; yes, it all works great together!

There you go, a thorough dissection of this notebook and how it performs in the real world. My wife loves it, and I think it's prety KUHL! I give the Sony Five Stars ***** across the board, and highly recommend it for the best price, features, and performance in the current crop of "media center" notebooks. This one adds some class to the class, and gets my vote for best performer for c.$1250 shipped... out of everything else available right now.

This laptop is really nice for the price I paid. However, I was somewhat disappointed by the wrong technical description listed by Amazon. The blu-ray drive is definitely NOT read/write capable. It is a ROM (Read Only)!! I contacted Sony to verify it. Thought about returning it but decided it is still a good buy even without that feature. By the way, I still prefer Windows XP over Vista. This laptop did not change my opinion about it.

Best Deals for Sony VAIO VGN-FW373J/B 16.4-Inch Laptop - Black

I bought this Vaio VGN-FW373J black about 2 weeks ago from Amazon. My overall impression is that this computer is a good value laptop.

1. Spec.

It has 2.4GHz C2D P8600 processor, which is fast enough for most tasks you can have today, even for some scientific computations (I use matlab to do simulations). Memory is ample, 4GB. Although with 64bit Vista, the system will start up with about 1.3GB memory used, you still have enough left. Hard disk is 7200rpm 320GB, fast, VERY quiet and large. The best part of this computer is the blu-ray rom and FULL HD 1080p LCD! I like that. The blu-ray rom have two laser diodes, one for blu-ray reading, one for normal DVD/CD reading and writing. The full HD 1920x1080 LCD is amazing! Everything is crisp clear! For small font, you can easily change the DPI setting to make it large and clear without running in lower resolutions. I think the LCD is a little bit TOO bright, I have to run at 50% brightness to make my eyes comfortable. The graphics card is ATI 3650 with 512MB graphics memory. I can run Battlefield 2 with Project Reality mode in medium settings without problem. 3 USB ports are enough however they are all crowded on the right side of the laptop, which is very odd. Bluetooth and wireless works very well. HDMI connection is also quite convenient: you only need one cable to send both video and audio to your HDTV. I use a Samsung 46" 1080p LCD TV, and the movie experience is fantastic! It has a build in SD card reader and sony memory stick slot. Overall, the spec is very good, I will give it 5/5.

2. Building quality

Well, at this price, you should not expect every details are built perfectly. Actually I found the plastic used in this laptop is quite cheap-feeling (all the outer shell of the computer is plastic except the small cover over the speakers which is metal). The black outer cover is rough and feels easy to crack. Not as good as my thinkpad's rubbery shell (Dell also have the similar rubbery shell in the XPS laptop line). As many people have said, the hinge connecting the display to the main body doesn't look very tough. The keyboard feels just fair. Not as good as a thinkpad, again, this is a value notebook, not a business class. The keyboard of my laptop has right side lower than the left side. Not a problem for use but you can see the building quality here. The touch pad's buttons are really hard to use. It is a little bit recessed into the main body. I think it is designed so as users won't accidentally click on it. But it is really hard to find it when are looking at the screen. And the buttons are hard to push: feels like 2lb push. Overall, the computer is not built as good as thinkpad, I will give it 3/5.

3. Software

It comes with Vista Home Premium 64bit. It takes a lot of memory to run this OS. There are also a lot of trial software which are useless (to me at least). So the first thing I got this computer is to remove all those useless software. Sony has some "computer tune up" software which will clean the disk and registry to keep your computer fast. I haven't use it a lot but I think this is quite useful. It is true that you can download this kind of things over the internet, but this one comes from sony, which makes me feel safer to let it modify and clean windows registry. WinDVD for Blu-ray movie is pretty good. Comparing the PowerDVD, the UI of WinDVD is a little bit too simple. But WinDVD can play HD movie with less CPU usage. That means, less consumption of power, which is good when you run on battery to watch HD movie. So overall, software is pretty good, I give it 4/5.

4. Blu-ray playback experience

The major reason I bought this computer is for the blu-ray movie playback capability. Besides the blu-ray rom, this machine has a full HD 1920x1080 display itself and it has HDMI to easily connect to HDTVs. So you have a mobile blu-ray player at home, almost! I said almost because the sound is not HD quality, which is a not too small drawback. The sound chip of the computer is Realtek HD audio, which is supposed to have the capability to support 5.1 speakers. But because of the OS is Vista (again it's vista's fault), there is no Realtek driver for windows vista to support 5.1 speakers. The only option you have is stereo two speakers. If you use the TV's two small speakers to play the sound, it is ok but if you connect the signal to 5.1 speakers, only the front left and right speakers have sound. The middle one (which should be the major one) and all rear surround speakers are muted. Sounds like a huge disappointment. However I think this is only the driver issue. Maybe (only maybe) in the near future, there will be some Realtek HD driver for vista to support 5.1 speakers. And then this issue will be gone. So for HD playback I give it 3/5.

So overall, you can't expect this machine to be perfect to every detail. But you know the spec is good enough for the price.

Honest reviews on Sony VAIO VGN-FW373J/B 16.4-Inch Laptop - Black

I researched laptops last year and put purchasing one off once again because I couldn't decided on a PC or Mac. In 2009 I decided to make the plunge. I looked at LED screens, Macs, solid state drives,....this video card that video card, shiny vs. none shiny, small vs. sorta small, and the list goes on and on. I knew I wanted something that looked intelligent, was designed well, had the latest or close to the latest technology, and performed well with graphic apps. I, like most, could not justify the cost of a Mac. For what I could get with this Sony I could not even come close with Mac.

So after many back and forths reading PC vs. Mac articles and listening to friends justifications....I went with the Sony. It's design is very clean and well thought out. The keyboard is fantastic! The HD is amazing and the speed of the machine is perfect. It runs large Photoshop and Illustrator files with ease although a 100 mb sketch-up model for work seem to drag a bit. Not sure why at this point. Programs open instantly and boot up is fast...very fast. It will even tell you current boot time.

The Sony preinstalled software is ok...similar to the PS3. I don't use it since I have iTunes and all my images sorted by my Canon Software. I do like Sony's System utility software...nice. Windows Vista has never been an issue for me, even on my older machine. Confirmations are annoying but I got used to it.

Battery life was a big research topic for me and this will eat the life right out of them. I keep it on battery saver when unplugged. Movies will suck the juice so I am looking to get a second battery for trips. Otherwise I can manage and have not found this not to be a negative at all. This size is great...not too big and not too small. The weight may not be good for those traveling a lot. For trips to the local coffee house its does just fine. I did get the neoprene case....nice for tossing in my cycling bag.

Overall its great. No crashes...no complaints. Just a workhorse and fun computer. Recommend to those searching and considering all the things I did. I am a perfectionist when it comes to making choices and I am satisfied with this one.

One more thing....I do wish it had a backlit keyboard but its not 100% necessary... But it would be nice.

Hope this helps or eases the process of getting a new machine. Happy shopping!

Cheers!

:OVERALL:

Major props to Sony on this one. This is absolutely THE best laptop you can find for the price. I spent just over $1000 on this and I'm loving it. Honestly, where can you find a powerful computer with 1080p resolution, a dedicated ATI video card, 16.4 inch screen, Blu-Ray player, and 4GB of ram for that little? A Mac with similar specs would cost you $2800! Save yourself the $1800 and buy a Plasma 50 inch TV, or for the down payment on a car, or a week in Hawaii the list goes on and on.

:PROS:

(1) Quick computing. I run serious MATLAB and Mathematica modeling programs on this bad boy, and it handles them just fine for a laptop.

(2) Runs cool. I've had some previous issues with powerful laptops overheating. This runs VERY quiet and cool.

(3) Blu-Ray is gorgeous.

(4) Overall Windows Experience Index Number is 5.1 on my machine.

(5) Keyboard is wonderfully ergonomic and fits perfectly to my hands. The keys have a great click to them, and don't feel cheap.

(6) The touchpad is great. I would rank it higher than any windows based machine I've ever felt and only slightly inferior to Apple's trackpad.

(7) Is very sleek and sexy. I think it's the best looking laptop I've ever owned, Macbooks included. Additionally, it is SURPRISINGLY LIGHT.

(8) Packaged/included software isn't too obtrusive.

(9) Speakers don't suck.

(10) Decent battery life, though I don't use this in such a way that it would matter either way.

(11) Very respectable boot up time.

(12) PRICE! You won't find a similar quality laptop for this price.

:CONS:

(1) Doesn't include packaged discs with drivers and the OS. You have to create them yourself. Not too difficult.

(2) Had to go online and update drivers manually for the Blu-Ray player.

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A QUALITY, POWERFUL LAPTOP WITHOUT SHELLING OUT A COUPLE G's, LOOK NO FURTHER!!

I bought a demo unit of this machine in 2007 from an Office Depot, and reinstalled from disc (any legitimate MT6705 -even demo models -came with discs, unlike that of one of the reviewers, apparently).

It has worked flawlessly ever since, other than things I dislike about Vista (had to do serious workarounds to install software that was safe and secure and updated -so there was no reason to use multiple measures to prevent it -but whose developers had not paid a royalty to Microsoft. If you use exclusively software desired my Microsoft, it will install like a dream)

The screen is bright and beautiful, the machine runs fast (probably helped by my adding RAM to arrive at its 2Gig maximum), and I get decent battery life for a machine this size.

In my case, I do not keep the screen at full brightness in order to save power and heat, but it still looks very nice. I use it primarily for Internet access, running programs (C, java, etc.), using the webcam, making CDs.

The only problem I ever had with it is that in its initial configuration, it would yank down the wireless card when you unplugged the unit's power source, and to get it back you have to use hotkeys Fn-F2 (using control panel's networking commands to try to enable/disable wireless did NOT get it working, only the hotkeys did -had to have a friend look them up for me on his computer since I couldn't get online to find out for myself;-) I believe that configuring "power options" in the control panel was what solved this for me.

I have not had the power supply problems. Perhaps my electric supplier has a more clean, regulated power supply, or perhaps it really did help that I have always had it plugged into an APC surge protector instead of directly into a wall outlet.

In 2011 I am still using it.

We bought a Gateway and Windows got hosed for some reason. We called 1-800-GATEWAY for support. Guess what? If you buy a Gateway anywhere but their website you must call a separate toll number. WTF!? Then we needed to restore it but the restore partition was bad. Had to get the recovery disk. They charged me $20 for a $1 CD-R. Then it wouldn't work, and they wanted to charge me to tell me how to use it. Again WTF? These people are horrible. Save yourself a lot of trouble and get a Mac. Get HP. Get an abacus. Anything but a Gateway.

Good Stuff:

Fast

Renders games at full settings on full HD surprisingly well

Keyboard

Bad stuff:

Frequent wi-fi disconnections with any router/card configuration. Deal breaker.

Video playback is disappointing

Cranky trackpad

Actual battery life is around 2 hours

In summary a good high performance laptop for the price, if mobility is not a requirement and LAN is acceptable.

The laptop is utter crap when it comes to usability, you may stop researching this model now and concentrate on some other make/model. Major issues are: Horrible wireless, Heavy, thick, susceptible to scratches and it runs hot.

The BIGGEST issue is the utterly craptastic Intel N-2230 wireless card and a bios which whitelists hardware so you can't just go out, buy a better wifi card and replace it on your own. Crap hardware AND a whitelist, what could possibly go right? The card WILL NOT connect to the 3 different wireless routers after it wakes up from sleep or hibernation the Linksys E4500, the Verizon FIOS router or an old Belkin. Our 2 iphones, 2 ipads, a PS3, Roku, Apple TV, 1 Dell Laptop, 1 Macbook Pro and the original Wii have zero issues connecting to our wireless network. Without wireless connectivity this laptop is just useless for work which we try to do on this machine.

The heft is enormous and, in my mind, unforgivable in current technological environment where everything is slimmer, faster, cooler. This is easily twice as thick as my 2013 macbook pro from work. This laptop could also be easily used as a room heater in colder regions and a food fryer in warmer ones it actually has a giant side vent through which copper fins, the size of mini skyscrapers, are visible.

The outer skin is very prone to scuffs, is a fingerprint magnet and scratches easily. We had quite a few scratches after a few days of light careful use I cannot explain how light and careful use can scratch the outer surface but one way to find out is buy this beast and find out for yourself.

All in all an expensive chunk of nothing. There should be wayy better machines available at this price point including the much more stable Yoga which our 10 year old has.

This is a nice computer. I love the size and the sturdiness of it.

We have all Lenovo machines in our house, and they've never missed a beat. I wanted something a little larger than my 15 inch ThinkPad, so went with the G780.

Pros: size without too much weight, good looks, well put together, an able multi-tasker, smooth performance, really zippy and sure, the display is gorgeous and easy on the eyes...love having a bigger screen, excellent sound...best I've ever had on any computer, easy to transfer Windows7 & stuff over and add peripherals, and yes, I will say it: I am enjoying Windows 8.

Cons: The mouse buttons are kinda noisy and stiff. I am hoping they will break in, eventually. Also, too much bloatware, but it all seems easily removable. This isn't a computer to haul around all over tarnation. Though light for the size, it's still quite large and not of 'Thinkpad' build, in the lid/screen section.

If you are looking for a larger laptop, give this a try. Windows 8 is actually kind of fun, once you understand how to use it. Get on YouTube and watch a few W8 videos before you try it.

Just pleased as punch with this desktop replacement machine. It's truly awesome!

Update: Just wanted to add, I've had no problems whatsoever with the wifi card on this computer. It works very well. I am always connected quickly, no reboots necessary.

I've got to say that this laptop is excellent. Once I purchased it and powered it up, I didn't let Windows 8 even have a chance to run on it. I installed Linux Mint on it (like I do with all my machines) and it runs breathtakingly fast and never misses a beat. Excellent laptop for the money.

I bought my g780 less than a month ago and have been to the Lenovo support website several times and on the phone with tech support 3 times, trying to solve the problem of a curser that randomly jumps backwards, and automatically highlights and deletes what I type.

The automated support phone tree is frustrating, apparently not understanding English when you read your serial number. And no, you can't key in your number, you must say it.

Today, after downloading new mouse drivers and reinstalling the energy management, they determined that I needed to send it back to them. They made it sound like they were being generous by offering me free return shipping, but I would have to pay to ship it to them. I told them it was less than a month old and I expected them to take care of this entirely. After "talking with a supervisor" they finally did send me a postage-paid shipping label.

I was going to give them a two-star rating instead of a one-star, but the first time I typed this, the highlight-and-delete thing happened, erasing all of my review!

Update: 8/29/13 After having my computer for a month, Lenovo returned it to me with the same problem they were supposed to fix. The cursor still randomly jumps backward. In addition, I now find that sometimes the characters I type do not always show up on the monitor.

Honest reviews on Lenovo G780 17.3-Inch Laptop (Matte IMR/Metal)

Don't waste your time in this piece of JUNK! It's a plastic piece of trumped up garbage and it's difficult for me to believe that the other reviews on here are all sincere. First, the casing is light weight and feels like a toy computer. Then, for some reason the computer does it's oEWwn thing, so as I am reading something or writing something, it jumps to some other page. I waste an enormous amount of time just staying on the page I've selected. The mouse pad is too sensitive so when I'm typing it's jumping all around. It continually loses my internet wireless connection, even though none of the other computers in the house do. Windows 8 is awful. What can I say. I plan to buy an Apple and give this piece of junk away. In fact, it's so bad that I am considering giving up on laptops altogether and just using my phone and a good desk top computer. Lenovo -never again!

I don't as a rule buy electronics by mail order, but My son said that this is the Laptop that he wanted. So taking a chance on this item, I bought it for him and he has remarked at least 8 times that this laptop is great. It was the item that he could use for work and pleasure. My grandson also is a computer buff and he says that this laptop is better then what he has ever used. Since I am 60 plus I will take their word for it. Only know how to be dangerous on a PC I can only take their word for it.

I bought this laptop at BestBuy during the Christmas Holidays in 2012 because my old Toshiba puked on me that same week. I bought my old Satellite A105-S4334 while stationed in Iraq in January of 2006 and it was a work horse. In fact the only thing wrong with it is the fan is broke otherwise it would be up and running. This new laptop is the same but much lighter and it runs WIN 8-64. Very fast start-up, lower power usage, and it upgrades by itself and it finds my wireless by itself also. My cost was three-hundred dollars more than the one posted here in Amazon so I think it is a very good price. Oh and one more thing, I have zero issues with running WIN 8 OS with its given RAM of 4gb.

first, to give some background I am basing my rating on the computer itself not Chrome OS. I think that I would give the operating system three stars. It is still lacking some significant things. For example, there is no screensaver, and there is no way to sync your ipod/phone. But, it is great for doing all the web-based things you want to do without the clutter and weight of other operating systems.

As for the computer itself...

In relation to a Unibody mac, there is no comparison. The HP Chromebook feels cheaper. The keyboard isn't as comfortable, nor is it backlit. The trackpad can be a little jittery, and the buttons just don't have the same solid feel. But, and here is a huge but, at $330, there just isn't any way it could compare to a $1500 computer. Looking at it for what it is, it feels pretty OK. The screen is bright and clear, and the 14" size is just a whole lot better than 11". For what it is, everything seems to be made pretty well. It feels solid for plastic (no squishy feeling where you rest your hands while typing). And, even though it is heavy for a Chromebook, it is still really light. Most importantly it is fast. Really fast. It boots almost instantly. I think it takes longer for me to type my password than it does for the operating system to go from off to ready to go.

As I try more things, I will update this review. As a first impression, I would call myself impressed.

*edit 1:

So, my first computer was a lemon. As it turned out, it would not charge when the power was off. I have not heard of anyone else having this problem, so I don't think it is a general issue...and I can see why QC would not have caught it. The only reason I am adding anything here is because I had a terrible experience with HP's technical support. The main problem is that they are just not set up to handle Chrome OS. Eventually I got to a point where I realized they were trying to use windows troubleshooting steps on my chrome machine (figured that out when they kept asking me to go to "control panel" or use "run")...so I took it back to the store where I bought it and exchanged the defective computer for a new one, which works great.

But, moving on from that, I have to say that the trauma of this whole situation was not really that traumatic at all. If it had been a windows machine or even a mac, I would be cursing the day's worth of work that was left for me to get back up and running. Instead, I powerwashed my computer (chrome's way of saying erased all the user data) before returning it, and when I got the new one, I put in my email info and it was back right where I left off. No reinstalling this and that or recovering via time-machine. It only took me about twenty seconds longer than a standard startup. Needless to say, that made me very happy.

On another note, I have done the optional ram upgrade that caused me to choose this machine over the samsung, and here is a warning. Even if you are a computer DIYer, don't try this one. I consider myself pretty handy, having built a few desktop computers and even a laptop, but I was not able to do the ram upgrade. You need the proper tools to get the HP case apart and the ram is located all the way at the bottom so you literally have to take the whole computer apart to get to the extra ram slot. Leave it to the pros. or let the 2 gigs suffice, it probably wasn't really necessary to do the upgrade anyway. I really wish they would offer a 4 gig pre-installed option...

*edit 2

So this edit is more about chrome OS than it is about the computer itself, which has been working flawlessly. I have run into a few more issues that have yet to be resolved for chrome OS. Apparently Java is not supported. This hasn't been the biggest issue, but it is frustrating to not be able to use some websites...and if you think 'I am not a super user, I wouldn't have that problem'...that isn't really the case. Some pretty basic websites like the webcam feed for our puppy's daycare uses Java...I wouldn't call this a deal breaker, but it is something to be aware of...

I received my HP Chromebook today. I have been disgusted with Windows 7 operating system now for sometime. When my desktop was new it took about a minute to boot up, after constant Windows updates it now takes 8 to 10 minutes to boot up (plus the web locks up if it decides to update while I am in the middle of something even after turning off updates). I read reviews of Google Chrome OS and decided to try a Chromebook computer. I looked at Samsung and Acer laptops and with old eyes I wanted a larger screen so I chose the HP with a 14 inch screen. Set up could not have been simpler. I went thru the installation and set up in about a minute. I was using Google Chrome on my desktop so all the bookmarks and all else was transferred to the HP Chromebook without a hitch. It boots up in seconds and I am online in a matter of seconds. It also has Google Docs and Google Sheets (word processing and spreadsheet basic) that is very user much like Windows Office. If the performance continues,(I expect it will) I could not be more pleased. Windows needs to figure out a better OS or Google OS will take over completely as far as computer systems go. I am 100% pleased with this system as I did not want a tablet. If in the near future some one comes out with a desktop Chromebook I will buy one. For web surfing and emails, basic word processing and spreadsheet this can not be beat. I would recommend a Chromebook to anyone who wants the above mentioned usage in a computer system.

I received this HP product Friday and have only used it for a few hours. This is my first laptop so I can't compare it to other similar products. First impression: solid construction, nice screen, good keyboard, good sounding speakers (at least to my ears). The speakers are upward-facing as opposed to speakers on the bottom on many similar products. Surfing without a mouse is a new experience for me, but the more I use this product, the easier it gets. A negative for many is two hours less battery reserve than the Samsung, but I wanted the larger screen and decided I could live with this shortcoming.

Gamers who need JAVA and others who need JAVA for certain programs should not buy this product. I don't miss it as I removed it from my desktop recently due to security concerns. The main negative for me is that I don't like using web mail; I much prefer Thunderbird.

This product excels at surfing the Web and watching videos including HD videos and if you have been using the Chrome browser on another computer, all of your settings are carried over for a smooth transition.

Honest reviews on HP Pavilion Chromebook 14-c010us 14-Inch Laptop (Black)

Four stars because so far, I have been unable to locate a multi-account mail handler that will run in Chrome OS. The closest I can get is adding other POP accounts to my gmail, and that isn't something I want to do. This seems strange, as there are any number of such mail handlers available for Android and Google owns both Android and Chrome OS. You'd think there would be some technology bleed-over.

HP does a good job with the fit and finish of this device. Very nice screen, keyboard a natural fit for my fingers, lightweight, and booting from completely off to log in screen takes just 4 seconds! Another nice feature is that after you turn the computer off and close the lid, the next time you open the lid the computer boots up automatically.

If you're looking for a business machine, this ain't it. It won't run the full-featured business software most enterprises need to run. But for personal use it works just fine. You can write, you can spreadsheet, you can prepare presentations, you can game, play music, shop, surf, and so on. Even better, it comes with 5 gig of free cloud space for you to store your documents and other work, if you like. Or you can store them on your machine. Or both. You can add an SD card to increase memory up to at least 32 gig. I have been writing for 15 years, including 9 full-length novels. All that work is less than 4 gig.

Think of this as more computer than tablet, but they share a lot in common. I'm one of those early adopters of what seems like good ideas, and so far this is one of those. Now if they just had a mail handler . . .

I was toiling over needing a new laptop and the cost. I needed it for writing so had to have a keyboard. Thought about the Surface but really wanted a bigger screen. Then I ran across a Chromebook and was curious. After reading reviews and comparing my needs to its pros and cons I took a chance on it and I am very pleased. The keyboard is like a laptop with keys in their usual places so I can type without missing a beat. I am using Google docs instead of MS Word and have found it doesn't have as much in the way of formatting choices but I also have found that when I am writing my first draft I don't really worry with that anyway. It's more important that I can easily, quickly, write what's coming to mind from where ever I am. Also I can share it easily so others can review it for me, leaving comments. The only other thing I want to do but haven't tried is the Skype type app to talk with video. Streaming video full screen is amazing and I can also shoot it onto the TV via an HDMI cable which is cool. The battery doesn't last long when streaming video or even music but for just writing and checking email and Facebook it lasts plenty long for me to not be terribly inconvenienced so far. It is light, quiet, and cool enough to use on my lap in bed whether I am writing, reading with the Kindle app, or just watching a movie. It is such an improvement over my old slow heavy laptop and for only $300 bucks I could not be happier. The camera is not comparable to ipads from what I have figured out so far but the 14" screen was more important to me than taking pics.

I bought my TX2Z shortly before starting a college program. It lasted just under 2 years before the motherboard failed. About 6 months or so after purchase, the CPU cooling fan began to run much more frequently. After about a year, it ran constantly. I frequently used compressed air to blow out the vents (the cooling fins appeared clean) and even removed the DVD drive, in case it was helping to cause the heat build-up. Finally, the weekend before an exam and one week before finals, it failed and flashing lights on the keyboard signaled a motherboard failure. I had been using a cooling pan w/dual fans anytime I was on A/C power (80% of the time during the first year of ownership and almost 100% of the time after that), so I don't believe I caused the failure with poor ventilation.

When it worked properly, I really liked it. However, it seems that motherboard failures related to heat build-up are common in this line. Shame on you, HP!

Honest reviews on HP Touchsmart TX2 12.1-Inch Notebook

In the beginning, I was so excited about this computer! I bought it in late 2009 straight from HP and was overly excited about the, seemingly, infinite things I could do with this computer. I was excited about the technology--even before the the Windows 7 upgrade, it was cool. From the start, I had minor problems--the computer would shut off on it's own in a very odd way. Battery wouldn't be dead or anything, but it was frequent. The computer's fan was always on and LOUD. I always took care to ensure that it wasn't in a position to run hot, but the fan just kept on running. I called in to HP, they sent me through the Bios screen to, as I understand it, keep the fan running so that computer wouldn't overheat. Didn't help much at all. Then, not even a year after having the computer, a pink line appeared in the middle of my screen. I called to ask HP about it, they said there was nothing they could do about it--it was a problem with the screen. OK, big deal to me(because I, like everyone else here paid a whole hell of a lot of money for this machine--much more than the $525 it's currently selling for), but I let it slide. The battery needed to be replaced so quickly--I didn't even have the cheapest battery--it only lasted a little over a year. It showed signs of decline before that (a computer I used for school purposes and kept on power saving settings MOST of the time). I bought a new battery (I won't even get into the trouble I had with HP's customer service regarding that--that's a whole other issue), then a few months later, I'm experiencing my computer shutting off and making this odd sound (kind of like how cartoons sound when they run/zoom away--think road runner) while I would be in the middle of something. That went on for months before I was completely locked out of my computer. I only had the option to remove my files onto an external hard drive (which I also bought from HP--Simple Save), then restore the computer to factory settings (which took away the Window 7 upgrade).

Well, I had it up and running for a little bit, just to have it go out one day after I closed it (put it to sleep) to run out somewhere for a moment. Suddenly, I remembered I had to do something else. I opened the computer to see flashing lights (I think the CAPS and maybe two other lights). I tried pressing buttons--no response. I tried turning it off (it went off), then turned it back on--same thing, just flashing lights. So finally, I decided to do an internet search by entering my computer's symptoms, only to come across a huge number of reviews/complaints of people with the EXACT SAME ISSUE. Not only that, they had done things the exact same way (computer went to sleep and they couldn't wake it back up). I read review after review--complaint after complaint. The most disappointing thing was that everyone had the same issue--HP didn't care. They would not fix it or even acknowledge it as an issue with these computers. Most people were like me and out of warranty.

Well, HP wasn't going to help, so I went to good old, trusty Youtube to find a solution. Amazingly, there were several videos of people either replacing motherboards in the computer, or taking the computer a part and adding silver compound and a penny to rectify the problems, sometimes. Unfortunately, after CAREFULLY/METICULOUSLY taking my computer apart and trying the fix, my computer was not fixed. Although I was able to move the majority of my files on to my external hard drive, previously--I had since bought some songs on itunes in between updating my back up and when it died on me. I guess the only way I'll see those files again is if I purchase an enclosure for my internal hard drive or something else to get my files off. How disappointing is that?! The computer that keeps on costing! As someone who believed in HP products and had an HP desktop in high school and a lap top in college that lasted me quite a while, I am very disappointed in my experience with this computer and with HP's customer service when it came to resolving this issue. I'm also disappointed that HP sees this computer is defective, yet they've made ZERO strides to resolve this issue. Needless to say--after years of me and my family purchasing HP and Compaq products, we'll never lay a hand on another. DO NOT BUY THIS COMPUTER! It'll be the worst mistake you've ever made! It currently serves as the most expensive paperweight I've ever seen.

This is my 2nd touchscreen. The first one stopped working about 1 year after i bought it (motherboard). I decided to take a chance and buy it again, since i really loved it. 3 and a half years later, some lights flashed on my keyboard, which meant again motherboard failure.

It's a great product, but just if you're looking to trade it for another one in less than than 2 years. If you're looking for a long-term computer, this is NOT your best choice.

I love this computer. Absolutely head-over-heels love it. It's compact and light enough for me to carry to and from class without breaking my back (can't say this of my old, 7-lb Dell!). They keyboard feels WONDERFUL. Construction feels solid. Beautiful design. Really amazing specssame hardware as a MacBook Pro!for half the price. The trackpad is a tad finicky, but I've adjusted the settings so it works for me. It'll take a tiny bit of getting used to, but there's an adjustment period with any new computer. I'm super happy with my purchase, and with the SquareTrade warranty I bought with the computer, I see us having a long, happy life together!

EDIT: I just realized that the keyboard on this computer has a strange hill in the center, like it's being squeezed or something. It doesn't interfere with typing at all, but a brand new computer shouldn't have this kind of defect. What's more, when researching this computer, this was one of the things someone cited as a flaw in a review on another website, so I guess it happens fairly frequently. I didn't mention in the first draft of my review that this is my second of this model of computer; I bought the first one at Staple's a couple of weeks ago and had to return it because it had a faulty "W" key and a really jumpy track pad. I've noticed that this track pad is kind of inconsistent, and maybe more finicky than I previously thought. These design flaws have me considering returning the machine, but you just can't find this kind of hardware and gorgeous design for the same price point. Maybe I'll just get another one... third time's a charm, right?

If you type reasonbly fast (i.e. 45wpm or above), you want to think twice before you buy any HP DM4-xxxx series of Pavilion laptop.

I had a HP DM4-2070us and it skip letters like crazy after 3 months. Every 5-6 keystrokes you type will have one keystroke that is missed, that is, even though you did type that key, it will not appear on the screen. Or, you would hit the space bar or the Backspace key and it will not respond.

I had to call and deal with HP Technical Support. They wasted my time trying out all kinds of stuff: Windows system restore point, uninstall and re-install keyboard drivers, full system recovery (that's a fancy term for re-formatting your whole hard disc), etc., etc. All these attempts failed to fix the problem.

After struggling with all these for over two weeks, I have to ship it back to HP Warranty Repair Center and that took two weeks back and forth. During those two weeks I was out without a laptop to do my work. The Warranty Repair Center replaced the keyboard and ship it back to me. Unfortunately, that does not fix the problem. HP is kind enough to replace it with HP DM4-2180us but the whole process took another 7 days. I would be happy if that solve the probelm. Unfortunately, when I get the brand new HP DM4-2180us, it has exactly the same problem -as soon as you type fast (over 45 wpm), the problem is obvious.

I am not the only one with this problem. Use the two links below to take you to the HP Support Forum website and you will see different people with DM4-1165DX, DM4-1127 sb, DM4-2015dx, DM4-2070us and most recently, DM4-2180us having the same problem:

I spent a long time researching computers and this one fit the bill in terms of functionality and price point. I really like almost everything about this machine its cool, quiet (even with the fan running), and fast. I did uninstall a little bloatware when it first arrived, but that was easy and quick. The only issue i'm having is with the keyboard. It is very stiff and significantly slows down my typing speed because I have to hit all of the letters very hard to make sure they all come up on the screen. The shift key in particular is hard to use to the point of severe frustration. Nobody else seems to have this issue, so it may just be my machine.

I was looking for a computer to replace my 4 year old Dell laptop, and came across this HP in consumer reports. It was recommended by them, so I figured it must be a good one. And it certainly is!!! I have always had Dell laptops, but I thought it would be a good time to try HP and I'm really glad I did. It has wonderful features, and Windows 7 is amazing. I don't do any sort of gaming or anything like that, so I can't speak to the graphics or processor capabilities. I do however, normally have many internet and excel windows open at once, and it has yet to skip a beat. It never hesitates. This is an excellent computer, and I highly recommend it.

I was very hopeful getting a laptop, having been used to desk top computers for business and home. I must say, that I agree with the reviewer that if you type more than 40wpm or so, the keyboard inputs aren't always correct. The "shift" button seems to me to be too low and to the right and I always end up hitting the "enter" key, changing the paragraph. When I consciously type slow, as when I force myself to look at the keyboard, it's ok. Worse yet, when I type an email, the message often times gets deleted mid-sentence. I'm not sure what key does this all the time, but it's annoying because I have to retype a message, sometimes multiple times, to get it through. I love the computer in every other respect and find the display to be crisp and the navigation and speed excellent. But the small keyboard introduces many mis-keys and errors typing. To me,it seems like a desk version of an ipad. Is it a sub-notebook? I don't know...it's not advertised as such. But for all but the most ardent believers of everything small, this notebook computer should be skipped for one with a full-size keyboard.

Cons: The computer is much heavier than expected, the sound out port is a tiny proprietary plug that only takes the Asus speaker unit (I have not been able to find any adapter units so I can hook it to my external speaker system on the desk), performance is fine but not blazing. The absolute worst feature is that it comes with Windows 8 installed. What an awful Operating System! Any busienss that buys a computer with Windows 8 will regret it from the first time their employee turns it on.. none of my networked scanners are supported, some of my online sites are incompatible with the new Internet Explorer version, etc. I am buying a new license for Windows 7 so I can remove Windows 8 from this computer... resulting in another $400 Microsoft extracts from my company.

But any one of my Sony VAIO computers can beat it for performance and, of course, none of the Sonys have Windows 8. Overall if you want to play games and have the OS act like a virus and take control of your screen at the most inopportune times, then buy this one. If not, then find a different computer without Windows 8!

Pros: The computer has a nice keyboard, and a decent display.

I bought this laptop in april of 2009. I upgraded the RAM from 2 to 4 GB's. I had to replace the screen recently but that was due more to my cat sitting on it. The computer its self is great. I upgraded from Vista to 7 and it runs that flawlessly. I have also booted Ubuntu and it recognized everything. I expect this laptop to last me another 5 years at least. Its a great computer if taken care of properly. I only had to format it once but that was due more to user error. The USB on the left side broke awhile back and i have yet to get it replaced. I would definitely purchase another for my wife.

Paid $300 for this laptop and a year and a half later it's proven to be a good buy. You really can't beat the price. I don't game much but I have run WOW on it and it does fine. A little lag when you go to Daleran but otherwise it's great. Short battery life but it's always plugged in anyway. It tends to get really hot really fast so be sure to ventilate properly as another reviewer suggested.

Bought one at MicroCenter with my severance package when laid off in 2009. Used at my little start-up business, at home, in hotels around the US, in customer offices.

Only two "complaints": Shiny keyboard limits where you want your lighting placed; no built-in webcam.

I have used it with the factory Vista Home Premium, Ubuntu, Mepis, and will soon upgrade to W7...

I purchased for $300

Pros:

Running Ubuntu Linux 10.04, all devices recognized and work

You can use Vista for light gaming, it has pretty good power with the Nvidia card

No frills, simple essential system

Upgradable to 4 hour battery

Large harddrive

Nice look

Cons:

Default install is Microsoft Vista

No builtin webcam

Can be heavy to carry for extended periods

Default battery life lasts about 1.5 hour with moderate use

Can get very hot without proper ventilation

May scratch easily on top of the polished case (I covered it with laminate film to protect it)

I would buy it again.

It is fully of bloatware. that nags the heck out of you to buy, buy, buy!!!! Dang nabit, pop ups! So, the stupid OS has become corrupt and i now need to do a system recovery. I have gotten my second set of recovery disk from HP and they still won't do the reinstall. I keep getting Error 1005. Yes, I have called numerous times and they want me to buy additional phone service for $100 to trouble shot and then additional $$$$ to actually fix the dang computer. I should have just bought a better computer. Maybe next time I'll get a Toshiba.

Now i was really skeptical about buying this laptop because it looked a little too good to be true, but wow am i glad i did. If your looking for a gaming or hightech laptop, this is not for you. This laptop would best suit a business proffesional. I've only had it for 2 weeks but its already exceeded my expectations. Im very happy with my purchase. The only con that i could truly say bothers me is that the battery only lasts about 40 minutes off the charger so im gonna have to go and purchase a new battery, but for the price of a 2.4 ghz duo core, 160hd, 4gbs of ram, theres not much complaining here.

I have been working on computers for 20+ years, installing, upgrading, repairing and using them. Dell is the only computer that I would recommend if anyone ever asks me. I have setup and sold several of these refurbished Dells and everyone loves them and the price.
