So far, I have truly enjoyed this laptop. I've had it since mid-December. The battery life is great (I might be biased, my previous laptop only lasted 45 seconds on battery) it runs fast (I might be biased, my last one had 1gigabyte of ram) and the speakers are really clear and loud too. The keyboard has a great feel to it; you can tell which key you're pressing just by the space between keys. Every now and then it doesn't recognize a key press, typically the ones below homerow, but that's not frequent enough to be a real concern. The backspace key takes some getting used to since it's a tad smaller than your fingers want it to be. I found myself hitting num lock a lot by accident. And unless you can reach an octave +3 on a piano, you won't be able to adjust the volume with one hand. (You have to press the function key and the left or right arrow keys at the same time. Volume adjustments in programs or on the desktop would still work fine, but it takes longer.)

Windows 8 is smooth and speedy, and makes it quick to start programs if you've pinned them to the start menu. The swiping to switch programs is a little bit hypersensitive sometimes, so you have to be careful not to drag your fingers too close to the edges or rest your left hand on the pad while navigating. The scrollbar on the right of the touchpad is a little hard to find sometimes, since the touchpad is flush with the frame of the laptop, but I've found that the two-finger touch scrolling option is easy enough.

Also, it is an incredibly glossy computer, so you will definitely have dust visible on it almost all the time. But really, it's what's inside that counts, right?

Aside from that, it's a fine machine, and very fun to use. I heartily recommend it.

ONLY PROBLEM HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE DEVICE. BUT WINDOWS 8 IS QUITE A CHALLENGE. NAVIGATION

IS AT THIS POINT, AT LEAST, VERY, VERY DIFFICULT AND LOADED WITH TONS OF WILD GOOSE CHASES.

BUT I'M CERTAIN THAT ONCE WE MASTER THIS INCREDIBLY STEEP LEARNING CURVE, ALL WILL BE WELL.

I've owned this since 2008 and have never had a problem, ever. It has built in speakers, webcam, 4 GB memory and if for some reason I needed more I can add 4 more gbs. I can have 4 windows open at once and view them all too. Great dependable machine oh and it has its own international passport lol.

I have been a faithful fan of HP for at least 20 (twenty) years. Loved their products, good price point, their support, style,... everything. I've bought three HP laptops in the last five years, and they all have turned out bad from cheap plastic-y housings, loose-rattly keyboards, glossy monitors that start to flicker after two months for no apparent reason, slow startup, HP proprietary applications hungry for processing power with no added value and that take away resources... flat out bad performance. I've used computers for a very long time; my knowledge of computers and software is above the "advanced line" I know which "knobs to turn", how much, and in what direction to squeeze the most out of a computer, but this this model (and the other two HP's that I got, which are completely different ones) is flat out junk it has everything I described above... forget about trying to get info from their website but, if you're curious try getting the specs of a specific product, but be ready to deal with a maze.

I'll give Dell and MS Surface a try HP, you're out!

Anyone interested in buying this particular model please stay away from it. Lenovo Ideapad U510 model has a very known hardware issue with the ELAN touchpad. I returned this model exactly for the same issue. This issue is known since Dec 2012 I believe. See the following link:

http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-Y-U-V-Z-and-P-series/Jumpy-and-Laggy-Touchpad-on-U510/td-p/952467

You will literally find 14 pages filled with customer complaints. The discussion thread stopped when someone from Lenovo support acknowledged it as hardware issue. Lenovo is shameless that it is still selling this faulty model just to clear its inventory. Looks like they prefer their own interests over ours. They should have recalled this model and come up with a new model that fixes the touchpad issue and discontinue the U510 model altogether.

I bought this Lenovo laptop to replace my old Lenevo Thinkpad bought 6 yrs ago. I thought Lenovo was a great brand but I will now shop for either HP or Dell.

I purchased my U510 at another retailer (same spec and price) and must say this is a great laptop. The screen is crisp and clear, the keyboard is a joy to type on and the speed meets my needs. The style of the laptop (like a journal or notebook) with the same color top and bottom is very cool and gets glances when I am carrying it around or using it.

Great perforemce at a great price.

Best Deals for Lenovo IdeaPad U510 15.6-Inch Ultrabook (Graphite Gray)

I ended up getting this same computer (refurbished) from the Lenovo official outlet shop for $450. For that price, it is a steal, but for what they offer it here for, it is definitely overpriced, because there are problems with it:

The touchpad is quite annoying, as it jumps when scrolling down otherwise ok.

The wifi does go off often for inexplicable reasons (on battery and everything, still unstable) had to get the official drivers with the connection utility from Intel to be at least able to troubleshoot it efficiently.

The battery lasts pretty long, some 4 hours, so that's fine.

Also, for some reason, sometimes when I close the lid, it goes to sleep, sometimes it turns off (although I set it up to go to sleep only), so I don't know what the deal is with that.

ALSO, there was a huge problem with the online sign-in to Windows8 with my (or any) Microsoft account initially (it was impossible, gave me an error every time) and I solved that by changing some registry (do your research and you'll find a solution), and it looks like Lenovo has a broken copy of Win8 that they are putting on these computers, otherwise the system has worked fine.

Moreover, beware, the speakers are really, really quiet, it's kinda ridiculous.

Oh yeah, and the last problem (I'm aware of) is the annoying beeping when the battery is low. I did all the research and no, it is not possible to turn off in the system or in bios, anywhere you just need to mute ALL the sounds, then it goes away. That means that you are not able to play any other sounds at the same time.

So yeah, there are many issues with this. I'd say the best thing about this computer is the design and a good keyboard, otherwise don't spend more money than you have to, there are other models from other brands that work much better for this price!

Honest reviews on Lenovo IdeaPad U510 15.6-Inch Ultrabook (Graphite Gray)

Do not buy this...The keyboard is really bad and my fingers hurt if you try to type fast. They are really expensive and there are sooo many model which are cheaper and better then these.

Of the fifteen or so laptops I have owned over the years this Lenovo right out of the box was the worst I have ever owned.

The touchpad was so sensitive that the machine would not stay on the page that you were looking at, and when it did the mouse pointer was jumping all over the screen. Wireless connectivity was limited to 5 10 feet from my new Cisco router. It seems that both of these problems have been written up extensively on the web (Lenovo laptop problems) for the last few years. Unfortunately I did not see them before I bought this machine. It has since been returned.

It was right before Christmas when I bought this laptop and what caught my eye was the price considering everything you get for the price.

First of all the screen is a whopping 17.3 inch widescreen with an awsome color display. On top of the display is an integrated webcam with microphone which I have used from time to time without any problems. Just below the unit are the controls for power, sound, media controls and WIFI. The only button really is the power all of the other buttons are touch sensitive. Just below this you will find the speakers which are decent however the quality could be better but I am satisified for what I do with this laptop. Below the speakers is the full keyboard with numeric keypad just to the right and below this is the touch mouse pad. On the back of the monitor you will find a lighted HP logo and just below that you will find the removable battery.

On the left side of the laptop you will find the following ports...

External Video Connector

HDMI Connector

RJ 45Ethernet port (10/100)

eSATA Connector

2 USB Ports

A notebook expansion Port (which holds the remote for controlling the CD and windows media)

A integrated SD-MS/ProMMC/XD Reader

On the right side of the laptop you will find the following ports...

Power Connection

Locking mechanism

RJ11 Modem port

2 USB ports

Blu-Ray DVD Drive & Burner

On the front of the display you will find indication lights for the power, battery and hard drive and connections for connecting external headphone and a microphone.

After I purchase my unit I upgraded some of the components and actually replaced the 500GB hard drive with two 250 solid state drive which reduced the weight and temperature just a bit but the drives allows Windows to boot now in less that 15 seconds! I also upgraded the memory to 8GB and Windows 7 from the Home version to the Ultimate version.

This laptop works great for what I do which is studying (why I chose the large display), Internet & email, music, visual studio programming and from time to time I will watch a movie. I have not had any problems with the unit since I bought it, to me it does just what I need.

This is a very big laptop and you may have some challenges with weight, heat and finding an adequate bag to carry everything in and because I do significate traveling I wanted something close to what I have at home and this is very close and allows me to work, study or play very comfortly.

Remember laptops tend to be items where personal values dictate your needs so this may not be the unit for you. Also because these are mechanical devices you can experience problems while others do not so I always recommend dealing with a company that will stand behind their product.

Would I recommend you purchase this laptop? No, this is a decision that you must make.

Be very careful with this laptop!

In January I bought two (in two diferent stores) and less than a couple of months both machines had the main board and video chipset completely fried by it's own overheat! Some technicians I consulted told me that there isn't proper ventilation coolers on the video chipsets, so if you plan to use the blu-ray driver very often it will fry the maiboard.

Just connect the facts: there isn't offers of New DV7-3065 in stores. Amazon only offers refurbished ones. It's hard to find information about it even on HP website. I bought two machines, in two different stores (the second a week later than first) and the two laptops have had the same problem!

I'm even more unlucky because I live outside US and HP doesn't extend warranty overseas. I had to spend about US$340 for each one to have it fixed (almost the half price I've paid) and I'm not sure if the problem will happen again. I'm definetly going to resell it on ebay or similar.

Don't buy this junk, unless you are needed to an egg frier! It should be very good on it!

Best Deals for HP Pavilion DV7-3065DX 17.3-Inch Laptop with Blu-Ray - Black

I bought this computer about two months ago for basic video and HD uses. Although I no longer have the use for the Bluray DVD player, I love this computer. The only problems I have had were based on using too many applications of windows explorer at the same time. I haven't taken any of the HP extra software off of this machine and suggest not doing so. There is a remote control that works great and fits into the side of the computer in the express card slot for using the DVD player. The computer would run faster without this software, but I have no need for a screamer. I play a few games to include flight simulator but I just turn down the graphics a little and it runs fine. I purchased this computer refurbished for $569 and have been more than satisfied. The HDMI out has been super useful in that I connect netflix to my other TV for movies. All in all this is a great computer for moderately complex programs. Photoshop CS3 runs fine as well as all of the graphics software that was included. It includes great software: Corel Photo Shop Pro Photo X2, Corel Video Studio 12, a Cyberlink suite that includes Powerdirector V7, and Power2Go, Labelprint. I had no clue these programs were included and they are definitely an added bonus. This is a solid video/graphics machine that delivers with software and hardware. You will not find a better machine for the money that also includes a Bluray player at a great price.

Honest reviews on HP Pavilion DV7-3065DX 17.3-Inch Laptop with Blu-Ray - Black

bought this DV7-3065DX second hand & repaired it these models overheat easily & crash readily along with poor speakers don't leave much to be desired.

but when you consider hdmi out, supermulti light scribe Blu-ray optical drive with an port for a second hard drive these option's alone in late 2009 puts this machine in rare company I've decided to make it mine even though my hpdv2610us has a 14" screen and way better speakers it's still only entry level.

It gave me an issue after 3 wks of owning it. I had to call HP Support and pay them to fix it. Seller would not help nor help pay for the extra I had to pay to get fixed. But love the computer. I should have went with the refurbished one because by time I paid HP Support I paid close to the same amount. But HP walked me through steps to fix it so I won't have that problem again. Haven't had any issues since then.

I got this laptop from an IT school. Considering it was part of the tuition and it is supposed to be used FREQUENTLY in class especially for VMs (virtual machines) ie, Server 2003 and Server 2008. I am very disappointed with their (the school) choice of laptop. I eventually upgraded the 4 gb of RAM to 8GB max (cost $50). I had also went ahead and upgraded the stock 5400rpm, 320 GB SATA HD with a crucial 512GB SSD (cost $300). I transfered the whole OS/Drive onto the new SSD via a USB/SATA cable, worked like a charm. Now, instead of waiting literally 5 minutes for Windows 7 to load. The OS is up and running in 30 seconds. For me the cost of $350 was ok, even though I had already kinda' paid for it in my tuition. I use it as a 'test' laptop. I will most likely try to find ways to upgrade/change the FAN and CPU (maybe to an i7).

So, I would value this laptop at $400 max. There are others out there that can be upgraded piece by piece and still be under the asking price of $600.

hope this helps.

Toshiba Satellite S55-A5256NR 15.6-Inch Laptop
Customer Ratings: 4.5 stars

I bought this laptop recently to replace a 6 year old HP. I didn't have high expectations after reading about the difficulties of Windows 8 and problems with other laptops.

The negative: This Toshiba does not come equipped with a removable battery. I found it convenient to have extra batteries available with the old laptop. The battery life is okay with about 3 1/2 hours of simple computer use/internet browsing. However, the battery does drain when you simply close the screen (it dropped to 60% while closed for 24 hours).

The first time I tried to open the optical drive it didn't open. I had to use a paperclip to manually open it. Afterwards, it has opened automatically without any problems.

The positive: This laptop is fast. I'm not a gamer, so I can't say how it does with the latest games, but for everyday computing use it blows my old laptop out of the water. Webpages and software open quickly. The computer comes out of sleep mode almost instantly.

I was able to install my old software without a hitch. I am running Windows Office 2000 and QuickBooks 2003 without much difficulty. I run QB as an administrator to work at its best.

The backlit keyboard feature is useful and I like having the 10-key number pad. The touchpad is easy to use, even without the dedicated right/left buttons. There are two thin raised bars that help the fingers sense where to click for the respective buttons.

The Toshiba feels light, but sturdy.

There is little to no noise, much quieter than the old HP I used. The cooling fan seems to work efficiently as the area where my wrists rest while I type has stayed cool to the touch.

Overall, a good laptop for me. I would have rated it 5 stars had the battery been removable.

I love my new laptop. I couldn't be happier. It is taking some getting used to using windows 8, but it will come with time.

I love the back light feature on the keyboard. The screen is bright and I love the weight of the laptop, so light to carry.

Looking forward to many years with it,

The computer looks rather nice (looks similar to a Mac, but is thicker). Parameters of this machine are impressive, but it has several drawbacks. The touchpad is not comfortable, fan is quite loud. My touchscreen is faulty and it turns out it is not possible to disable the touchscreen driver. And finallywindows 8 is the worst system I've used so far. What's more, due to UEFI boot it is difficult to install f.e. linux as dual boot.

I got this laptop when my Dell Inspiron 1525 pooped out (I can't even say "old" Dell because I'd only had it for 1 year and 9 months). The processor is a little on the slow side, but it's fine for me to use my Adobe programs like Photoshop, which says a lot because Photoshop can really be a hog. I was shopping for something with a larger screen; 13'' is too small for me but 17'' is too bag, and this is perfect for me. It's a little on the heavy side, but fine to carry in a laptop bag. I also like the color because I was looking for something other than black, and the white is actually sparkly if you look closely!

Best Deals for Toshiba - Satellite 15.6" Laptop - 3rd Gen Intel® CoreTM

From a nontechy but reasonably computer savy guy-

I absolutely love this laptop. I upgrading from another Satellite laptop that used a dual core i3 processor (which was rated as 2.10 GHz), and this dual core i5 (rated at 1.8 GHz) is pretty fast. I ran a Webroot scan, did a disk clean up and defrag, copied my music files to a 1.0 USB flash drive (I have a ton of music it took about 15 mins), opened a few word docs, opened my iTunes and played it, and on top of all that I opened 12 Chrome tabs and clicked play on all the videos (understand this utilizes your internet and memory more than your processor). While I did all this I opened the CPU performance manager and watched the processor kick up to 2.65 GHz. The CPU got warm but never hot. I'm very happy with the processor performance so far.

While all this was happening, only 3.5 of the 6 gigs of memory were being utilized. So I KNOW I won't need to upgrade the memory (you are able to upgrade to 16 gigs of RAM).

Windows 8 was a pain in the ass when I first started using it. I've grown to like it and I think of it as Windows 7 with a different start button with the ability to download apps.

On top of everything the computer looks sexy as heck.

Complaints: The backlit keyboard only offers you one brightness option.

Also, as with my other Satellite laptop, sometimes (on rare occations so far) this computer does not detect Wifi signals. I accidentally put the computer in "Airplane Mode" and when I turned Airplane Mode back off, the laptop was unable to find any Wifi signals. I figured out how to fix my last Satellite by turning off the laptop, removing the battery, then turning the laptop back on. Since there is no battery on this one you have to go into Device Manager..go to Network Adapters...find Intel(R) Centrino(R) Wireless-N 2230...right click to uninstall this (IMPORTANT: do NOT check the "Remove drivers" option)...wait for it to uninstall then right click on any of the other adapters in the drop down...right click then click "Scan for hardware changes"...the Intel(R) Centrino(R) Wireless-N 2230 should show back up and your Wifi radio switch should be turned back on and it will then detect wifi. You may never have to deal with this issue and its not enough for me to take away a full star so I'm sticking with 5 stars.

Honest reviews on Toshiba - Satellite 15.6" Laptop - 3rd Gen Intel® CoreTM

Seller was excellent but Toshiba touch pad difficult to adjust to as lacks click-able buttons for control and Microsoft needs to stop pushing unpolished software to the customer aka Windows 8 as not build for systems that do not have touch screens. Overall good product and great experience. Thank you.

Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Toshiba - Satellite 15.6" Laptop - 3rd Gen Intel® CoreTM

I bought this laptop as a replacement of my business laptop. If I lose a laptop I risk business.

Since I've owned this computer, 2 months, it has crashed twice. The recovery software saves my internet explorer but not the software, which must be reloaded after a crash. The primary problem isn't the faulty crash recovery.

It's the keyboard. I must type very slowly, for me, because it skips when I use keys on my right hand. I've seen the cursor jump to a paragraph above, typically. This is frustrating; I keep typing and have to stop, erase and start over.

Ending on a positive note, the Toshiba comes up fast --seconds. This is much faster than with Win-7 on my mainline HP. The keystroking on the HP is far superior. Toshiba, if you're listening, please fix the keyboard. You've got a good laptop here but for that.

If this review was helpful, please add your vote.

I bought this laptop about two months ago and it is absolutely incredible. I still can't believe all that it came with for the price. It is extremely fast, has an intel processor, high quality graphic, comes with a blue ray player, has software within to connect the laptop to your TV, so you can see anything on your laptop on your tv screen including your blue ray movies, etc. (must purchase a box to get the connection complete). Comes with a limited word processing software, and many other extras. After doing months of research this was the absolute best laptop for the money. The only negatives I see is the speakers don't seem to go very loud and the mouse takes a little getting used too, other then that this is one of the best out there.

I am a front end web developer, which means, I guess, that I know enough about computing that I just expect things to work. But I'm also a Windows guy, so with that in mind, here's my review:

VS MACBOOK PRO OVERVIEW:

There's no question this is Dell's/Windows answer to the MacBook Pro. My wife owns the latest 13.3 in MBP and side by side these look and feel a LOT alike. The hardware specs on this Dell are superior, but my honest assessment is the performance is pretty similar.

While I'm not crazy about the Lion interface, one thing I like about the MBP is that it's quiet, all the time. This Dell is VERY quiet by PC standards, silent most of the time, but if I'm doing a lot at once (videos, graphics, other heavy applications) I will hear the fan. Not bad at all, but noticeable.

If you like the look and feel of the MBP but you're married to Windows, Google, etc, this is probably as good as it gets.

DISPLAY:

It's great. Very bright and crisp. The 1600x900 is better than you'll get on a comparably priced MBP and seeing them side by side, I'll take this one.

KEYBOARD:

Clearly built to be like the MBP. I don't need to look at a keyboard when I type this one feels good, with a caveat: I feel like the keyboard is offset to the right just slightly. Maybe this is just me, but when I place my wrists on the deck, I can easily hit "r" when I mean to hit "t". It's taken me a few days to get used to this. Now that I have, the keyboard performance itself is really nice.

TOUCHPAD/MOUSE:

This is my least favorite thing. Again, maybe it's just me, but I felt like the mouse/cursor movement was slow out of the box. In Control Panel, I adjusted to as fast as possible, and I still think it's just fast enough. Taps and clicks on the touchpad are not as responsive as I would expect. Not terrible, but not great to me. That being said, I don't care for the touchpad on the MBP either, and this is a lot like that one, so maybe it's just me.

PHYSICAL LOOK AND FEEL:

Fantastic.

BATTERY:

On a full charge, my first battery run lasted just over six hours of moderate computing. That's pretty good, I think, but not fantastic. If it gets better, and I expect it will, I'll update.

BOOT/WAKE TIME:

I guess the SSD Dell built into this laptop helps. It's far quicker to respond than other Windows laptops. Don't expect it to be instantaneous though.

OVERALL:

Almost, but not quite, perfect. If you're a Windows/Google user who admires the MBP, this is it.

UPDATE:

First, the more I use this the more comfortable I become, particularly with the keyboard and touchpad.

Second, while another reviewer has claimed this does not have a media card slot, all I can say is, mine does. It's located on the right side of the laptop, and is not immediately obvious because the cover is well-engineered and flush to the body.

My son is off to his freshman year in college in Sept. I have been waiting for this product from Dell, a MBP killer for the MS Windows World. Similar size as 13" MBP but with a 14" screen. The best laptop processor, Intel 3rd Gen i7, with 8GB of main memory. A combined large hard drive and SSD drive for performance and quick boot times is a great touch. Like the NVIDEA separate graphics with another GB of graphics memory. And long battery life, key for college kids on the go. Thin & light. Purchased and external IOMEGA Super slim USB optical drive inexpensively, for when he really needs it--he can leave this in his room.

I dont think you can beat this package, buy it for those that really need a MOBILE computer, yes, a real computer that runs local apps (Photoshop, MS Office) lightning fast! And with plenty of local storage--take all your files with you in one small package. No tablet (iPad, etc) can even be mentioned in the same breath as this machine. There is no comparison. Apple has been outdone, and I love my iPhone and my son is thrilled with his 2nd Gen iPad.

I wish I had one of these, there is more than enough technology to last my son all 4 years of college!

Love it! I have had my XPS 14 for about a week now. I originally purchased the XPS 13, but ended up taking it back because I didn't want to spend $1500 on last year's technology. I debated on waiting for Dell to update the XPS 13, but then I decided to go ahead and make the purchase on the XPS 14. By purchasing the XPS 14 I was getting, over the XPS 13, the newest processor, higher resolution and better screen quality, 8 GB of memory, high end display adapter with 1gb of dedicated ram, SD card reader, full size HDMI port, and a built in Ethernet port. In addition to all that I saved $200 over the XPS 13. What you lose is a little size and the 256 GB SSD drive. The SSD is a big deal to me. What is the point of an ultrabook without a SSD? I noted that Amazon carried a Crucial 256 GB SSD designed for ultrabooks for $200. This puts the price equal to the XPS 13, with significantly better hardware on the XPS 14. When I got the XPS 14 I was amazed at how small it was for a 14 inch screen notebook. Replacing the hard drive with the SSD drive was easy. Since the XPS 14 comes with a 32gb SSD designed for caching, which I no longer needed since I was adding a SSD drive I got a bonus of an extra 32 GB of SSD drive space. With the added SSD the computer boots, shuts down, wakes, and sleeps almost instantly. If you are debating on this computer I highly recommend it.

Honest reviews on Dell XPS XPS14-10909sLV 14-Inch Ultrabook Laptop (Silver)

I bought the Dell XPS14-10909sLV Ultra book Laptop computer for my daughter to use in college. She uses it to take note during classes, to do her class work, cruise the web, watch videos, and play some games that she likes. Perhaps the battery doesn't last 11 or 12 hour as some of the info in this site stated. The battery lasts a good five hours or so with continues use. She told me that she is pretty happy with it. It doesn't have any optical drive but she hardly use that in her old laptop. She used to have a HP DV-4 Notebook. The problem with that is the battery life doesn't last perhaps just for one class. And the composite video card didn't run some of the games she wanted. I hope she is happy with the Dell XPS14 not just because it's a step up from experience with the HP-DV4.

For gaming this is well worth the money. I use this for pretty much everything. Gaming on this is great and one problem I have is it started to overheat. It would get as hot as 190'degrees. The fan would be louder then anyone would think. I worked the settings and it works much better now but fan still does turn on. I dont think it is a manufacturer defect because I've seen the same review online. Other than the overheating, this laptop performs phenomenally. I recommend the keyboard. Your fingers glide over the keys like hot butter :)
