Lenovo ThinkPad Z61t 9442 - Core Duo T2500 / 2 GHz - Centrino Duo Reviews
I saw that this laptop had all of the system requirements that I needed. I now use it to connect to the internet at home and work on many church projects. I also use it for personal use.
Cheap Sony VAIO E15 Series SVE15126CXP 15.5-Inch Laptop (Pink)
There is soooo much I can say about this laptop.
Let's see where to start...
1. Arrived on time straight from Amazon in the Sony Vaio Box.
2. Packaged really securely, nothing difficult.
3. Very beautiful. Much prettier in person :-)
4. It's not heavy, but it's not light either lol.
5. I was a bit terrified of learning how to use Windows 8, but luckily there is a "Desktop" tab on the homepage that will take you back to the Windows 7 set up, for those who are afraid of Windows 8 like I am!
6. The "Left" and "Right" click buttons that are usually on the touchpad are not visible but they are there. You just have to press the left and right sides of the pad and you'll feel them.
7. Isolated keyboard is nice because the keys are soft almost as if they're padded. They're not hard, make your fingers feel like they're touching soft rubber or something similar (I can't find the right material to compare the keys to lol)Also, the keyboard lights up automatically when a key is touched. This feature can obviously be turned off and on by the user.
8. There is a whole set up with user names and passwords and color customization when you first turn the computer on. It takes about 10-15 mins.
9. My battery went up to about 4 hours and 4 minutes at only 75% I think it was....so when I fully charge it I'll see if it goes up even higher.
10. I've literally only had it for 13 hours so far haha! And I'm IN LOVE!!!
11. OHHH HOW COULD I FORGET? SONY made me proud of them for this one: SPEAKERS are TREMENDOUSLY L-O-U-D!!!! you could host a party with using just the speakers haha! Went on youtube while the television was on and it blasted out the tv! So, if you can find a GOOOOOOOD quality external speaker, you'll never need headphones again (only if used to not disturb others)
12. Gosh...I think that's all that needs to be said now.....the layout is one that users have to get used to....luckily my curiosity allowed me to click "desktop" and I was back to the Windows 7 that I know and love lol (so no mental breakdowns for me lol)But I do like how you can switch between both Windows with the click of one button. The button with the 4 squares next to the left Alt button. I think it's called the "Windows" button lol. (duh)
13. But yeah....I HIGHLY recommend this laptop to any and everyone. I have had my SONY dvd player for over 2 years and my hp laptop was tripping out a year after I had it, and finally just STOPPED working after 3 yrs, so I said, "Hey, if my dvd player is to little, but carries such a loud sound and has such good quality, I'm gonna save some money and buy myself a new SONY laptop"...and SONY you did NOT disappoint! 5 stars :-)
To begin with, this laptop carries only Windows 8, and cannot be converted back and forth between 7 or 8 (at least not out of the box), as I had seen on reviews of almost identical model (and incorrectly assumed this one had that feature as well). If you have never used this version, I would strongly suggest reviewing Windows 8 before purchasing this laptop since it it very different than any other Windows version (it is strongly based on apps). I was extremely upset to discover this since I had an xp computer and very used to the format. After getting used to it though (and deleting a lot of the pointless apps that were already on there) it is actually a very handy and time-efficient way to maneuver between programs, just my opinion though.
As one of the negative comments mentioned, the product IS extremely poorly packaged. It consisted of a lot of space one crumpled sheet of paper, and then the cardboard box that contained the laptop. I am by no means surprised that that reviewer received his broken. Fortunately, mine was completely fine. Unlike that review, the laptop looks amazing and certainly does not feel like it is made from the same material as "a plastic spoon," as I believe he described it.
I have read on other Vaio laptops, that the touch pad is just awful, which I confirmed when testing out another model. I didn't really mind, since I liked mice better anyway. Luckily, this touch pad is more than I could ask for. It is fairly sensitive, so you barely have to touch it to click something, but all these features can be adjusted as well. I really like the two-finger scroll feature. In some of the laptops I've used, this function is awful and scrolls halfway down the page with barely moving (and it was a function issue, not a sensitivity issue), but it is really nice on this one. I don't even think I'll need a mouse at this point because the pad is basically just as versatile.
The light-up keyboard is very nice, I just wanted to point that out. The battery life is bout 4 hours when fully charged, and that's with my screen up to full brightness, since it seems a little dark at any other setting. The speakers are pretty quiet. I can have them up to the max and its nothing; I anticipated that though, and knew I wanted external speakers even before buying this laptop. Camera works just fine. I know this, but you need a special program, such as Windows Movie Maker, to turn the camera on or record anything since nothing of this sort is already installed. I had not known this and not sure if that's common, but it's really not a huge deal since Movie Maker is free.
A very specific and personal comment though. Windows 8 is not compatible with the Chrome Toolbox Extension, which I liked specifically for asking me every time to close all tabs when multiple are open. Without it, Chrome just closes the window, and I've mistakenly done that a few times. But that one slight downfall for me to Windows 8.
Just a personal preference that made me really happy: The top of the laptop can be opened without holding the bottom down. :D
The time it takes to turn this computer on/off (about 4 seconds) is incredible. Another pretty huge plus is that this laptop never gets hot on the bottom. It is always either neutral or very slightly warm even after hours of use. In addition, it is also a very quiet laptop.
There was some bloatware that I deleted (I had to look up what was needed or not, since the list was pretty extensive), but like I said before pre-installed apps were pretty bad. I uninstalled nearly everything from the main screen.
Lastly, Kaspersky antivirus program is downloaded as a trial for 30 days. It was nice at first, until every time I closed Google chrome and re-opened it, it stated: "chrome did not close properly, would you like to restore the last session?" This led to the fact that I couldn't even save any Favorites to the browser, because it supposedly didn't shut down correctly, and were deleted when I opened it back up. Well this got me really upset until I realized it was this program. I got rid of it (since it was a trial anyway) and the problem was solved.
I think that's about it, feel free to ask any more questions! Sorry if I wrote way too much, but I believe anyone buying this laptop should know these facts.
***EDIT 01/15/13***
The computer had some issues with hardware. It stated it had an error and requested me to restart it to fix the issue. Upon restart it scanned for errors and claimed it was repairing drive (C:). The "repair" started looping. I tried accessing safe mode to try and restore the computer but it would not let me access safe mode. I accessed the settings of the computer and tried resetting the BIOS, but had no results since the looping continued. The only option I had left was a reset to its factory settings which in fact resolved my issue, but I lost all my settings and information.
***EDIT 01/28/13***
Again my computer encountered problems with hardware. This tame when the computer requested a restart it DID scan and repair drive (C:). Upon restart it informed me the problem was some drives and system files from Windows. It seems that the error is not from Sony or with the laptop but rather with Windows 8 drivers. I am currently out of the country and will not return to the USA until August or September, but upon calling Sony they said that once I am in the country I can send the computer in for servicing and they will fix my driver issue. I am planning to buy an extended warranty on this computer just in case to avoid in complications in the future, Sony informed me that I can purchase the extended warranty up until my 11th month of purchase of the laptop. At least this time the error was fixed and the computer did NOT have to be reset to factory settings. I shall continue to update in case any other issues arise or if the issue with the drivers persist.
***EDIT 02/24/2013***
A month has gone by with no issues, no Blue Screen's of Death no driver errors. I removed the error message notification system that came with the Sony computer. I started to realize every single time I had an issue with the computer before happened right after the error message notification system flag popped up. Disabling seemed to solve the issue (now I really do believe it is a problem related to a missing file or some sort of issue with the notifications of errors). I will still send it in to Sony once I am in the USA to get it checked and hopefully fixed so that the computer can run perfectly even when the error message notification system is enabled. I will continue to eidt if any other problems arise or the original problem persists.
The keyboard is smooth.. I just cannot live without this laptop.
The only thing it needs to be fixed is probably the camera from Windows 8.
Anyway, I have no regret to choose this pink Sony laptop because it seems no different from Mac, and it is lot cheaper.

I was extremely picky when I decided to buy a laptop since it is my first one. I have read numerous reviews that had actually helped me lean away from many other laptops that I thought were perfect, so I hope that this review will be just as helpful. I had bought it because it seemed to fit my needs and was very up-to-date with plenty of hard drive space and RAM. I thought I had a good grasp of what I was getting, but there were many little things that actually happened to work in my favor. I've had this laptop for about a month now, and here are the facts that I find most useful for potential buyers:To begin with, this laptop carries only Windows 8, and cannot be converted back and forth between 7 or 8 (at least not out of the box), as I had seen on reviews of almost identical model (and incorrectly assumed this one had that feature as well). Well designed and nicely priced. The processor is nice and fast with the "turbo" feature makes this a great mid level laptop that works as fast as a expensive +$1000.00 laptop. I use it for making music and DJing and I have had NO CRASHES nor problems. I highly recommend this laptop. HDMI port; Three USB 2.0 and one USB 3.0; Start up is very fast! Dual core makes switching programs or working on two programs at once easy and fast. Doesn't heat up to my surprise, you could actually have it on your lap for long periods at a time and does not cause discomfort. The built in speakers are ok for personal use, do not expect it to blow the roof of or fill a living room. Back lit keyboard is nice and can be adjusted to turn off if not in use for "X" amount of time that you tell it to. Battery consumption is ABOUT RIGHT... The Win 8 OS is pretty cool once you get used to the "APP" style of working with the laptop... I recommend not to but the extended warr. with anyone other than SONY since they offer it cheaper and you know it will be good since it is direct... Anyways I recommend this laptop hands down... The product arrived in perfect condition. I have owned Sony Vaio's before and love their aesthetic look and also their functionality, the only con to Vaio's is the fact that they are very fragile so I would recommend it for someone who can actually take a lot of care of them. The operating system is fantastic, windows 8 is better than windows 7 or vista or any other OS you might have seen before. It does have a visual impact at first that might scare a lot of people, but its simple to use once you get used to it. The lack of a start menu is not big deal, the start menu has simply become the metro "app" looking start screen of win 8. Most programs run on a windows 8 view mode, if you do not like that view you can easily switch it over to "desktop mode" (same view as win 7) such as with Google chrome. For some programs where you cant switch such as Skype there are two versions of it, you can have the win 8 version of Skype or the "desktop" version of it. As for speed, the computer, processor and RAM is marvelous. I have not tried playing games on it but my old Sony Vaio ran FEAR 2 and COD so I am pretty sure this new one with higher specs must run it perfectly wit no lag. So far the screen has an amazing resolution, the keyboard feels smooth to the touch, the computer fan is quiet and it does not over heat. I bought this computer for college and it seems it will be simply perfect! This computer is simply marvelous for the price it has!***EDIT 01/15/13***

When I got this laptop, it was unbelievably awesome! First, I like the color. Instead of black, Sony had multiple colors laid out for customers to choose in their favor. Second, the resolution quality. When I watch movie, I feel like I don't need the blue ray since the quality of the screen is so great! This laptop is also quiet and super fast. The keyboard is smooth.. I just cannot live without this laptop.

Review of HP Envy 4-1115dx 14-inch Touch Ultrabook
After poking around a store and peeking in the returns cage, I found my HP Envy 4 at a heavily discounted price due to a missing battery? Really? The battery is built in. I had been shopping for literally months for an affordable Ultrabook with a touchscreen, backlit keys, small footprint, an I5 CPU, and for under a grand. The closest one I could find was an Acer M5, but that one has all the USB connections in the back (yes, under the monitor hinge), and the power button is on the front edge?!? Silly design.
The HP Envy Touch 4 is nearly perfect for me, especially after the minor tweaks I have made, and plan on making. It would be perfect if it had an IPS screen. Like most TFT screens, you have to angle it right to get the most contrast. However, the screen looks better out of the box than the Acer M5. 4GB of ram is a little light for my Photoshop needs, but I can add more ram with the removal of the bottom casing. The first and easiest tweak involved a little angelic program called Classic Shell, which not only boots straight to the Windows 8 Desktop, but also adds a Windows 7 style Start Button! I have NO use for the Start Screen or Screen Formerly Known as Metro. I didn't when I beta-tested it, and I still don't. Metro is a shameless marketing ploy to get on the app bandwagon. Silly Microsoft! Apps are for kids!! With Classic Shell, you get all the familiarity of Windows 7, with all the speed of Windows 8.
The backlit keyboard is hard to find among the plethora of laptops out there, and this keyboard is perfect for me. I had considered an Asus Q500 laptop once, but the grey backlit keys were a turn-off. My last laptop was a 17-inch with a 10-key number pad, and I never used it as much as I thought I would. This keyboard is just the write size for the writing I do.
The sound is nice through the headphones, and okay without. How much sound can you expect from a 14-inch laptop anyway, Beats Audio non-withstanding?
The battery life is adequate. I haven't timed it, but I've easily used it for over 3 hours with still plenty left. It is a 4-cell Lithium Ion Polymer battery, much better than Lithium-ion alone.
I really don't use the touchscreen that much since I installed Classic Shell.
Boot-up is under 15 seconds!!
Pros: I5 CPU, super fast PC3-12800 ram, touchscreen, 2 USB 3.0 on the left, 1 USB 2.0 on the right, and SD card reader. Small, thin form factor.
Cons: Nearly 5 lbs, Windows 8, no access doors, no IPS or hi-def screen. Hey, it costs under $800 everywhere, less for an Open-Box deal!

Dell Inspiron i17RN-5647BK 17-Inch Laptop (Black) Review
I have this exact laptop which I use on a regular basis. I got it from Dell.com for 200 dollars cheaper than it is on amazon. However I had to go through and delete alot of spam stuff from it the day I bought it because it was so stuffed with ads and what not that the computer had a hard time running. It would freeze up trying to pop up all the crap that they want you to buy. Other than that it's a great laptop. I've been using it for a year now and I haven't found any problems. But you can find it cheaper at
I use it for recording music with an 8-input interface for drums. Lots of plugins for audio effects and mixing. My software couldn't run when installed on the standard Dell image that came with the laptop. After reloading it runs like the laptop was made for this software. I've had this laptop for three months now and haven't had a single issue since reloading. Note: Dell usually doesn't send the recovery disk anymore, they only send you one if there's a hard drive issue. But even after reloading with a recovery disk, you usually have to go to their website and download some drivers to finish the reload.
Another note: I bought the 15" version of this laptop and the touch-pad buttons are silent but the keys click louder. With this 17" version, the keys are silent but the touch-pad buttons are loud. Go figure. All the reasons above are why I gave this laptop 4 instead of 5 stars.

I love this machine. It's a big improvement over the Dell laptop I was previously using, which I shipped to my grade school age nieces and nephews. Lot's power and storage space, but like all new products, it is skimpy on Microsoft software. Luckily I was able to add the products i needed and can upgrade to the next level when I want to.Honest reviews on Dell Inspiron i17RN-5647BK 17-Inch Laptop (Black)
When buying a new laptop, the first thing I do is either reload the OS or immediately begin uninstalling all of the extra programs and trial software that come on installed on the laptop out of the box. With all of the standard software Dell loads on their image it runs slower than it should. I'll never understand why these companies do this, it adversely affects the user's experience when their computer runs slow. You would think they would get that, but they continue to overload you with extra software and trial versions of stuff you don't need/want. Plus, Dell installs McAfee products. My experience is that McAfee software tends to be a resource hog and always seems to conflict with some piece of software I install now and then. They also have a habit of releasing AV definitions that crash Windows. I have used Symantec for many years and never had the issues I have had with McAfee products. Sorry McAfee... gotta go. So I go to the hardware list and write down the drivers for things like audio, video, network, touch-pad, Bluetooth, USB 3.0, web cam, etc. Then I go to their site and download them. After reloading the OS and installing the drivers, this laptop screamed!I use it for recording music with an 8-input interface for drums. Lots of plugins for audio effects and mixing. I am really pleased with this laptop. The webcam is good, the keyboard is well sized, but I don't like the placement of the screenshot button. I'll reach up for the backspace key, and hit screenshot too often. It's annoying. Anyway, the only other thing that I didn't like is the touchpad. It works fine, but just didn't please me as much as the one on my acer. It was worth it for what I paid.Buy Dell Inspiron Special Edition i15Rse-1667ALU 15-Inch FHD 1080P

Received my Dell 15R special edition in a fast time. It came in its dell box and also a Amazon box for shipping. The computer is pretty fast, nice graphics, still getting a hand on Windows 8 but overall computer is more that what i expected. Graphics card is switchable from Intel to AMD Radeon. This computer can change from playing a game (ex: Vegas 2 ) to skype or its desktop as if it was changing normal windows. Multitasking on it is incredible.I can play games what I like, though is not whatever games. I enjoy this computer but it is a little hot when you play games, but I just know that on software, I cannot feel it. It is ok! I love it! And it is really clear on screen.

I'm an IT guy and I often carry this instead of my work laptop on trips because its lighter and boots nearly instantly when an additional mSATA card, which isn't included, is installed in the mSATA slot and Windows is installed directly to it. I highly recommend techies adding an mSATA card as it will make this perform like a $700+ laptop.

These are my previous and current laptops. But only this one has stupidly placed hardwares and cheap palmrest (case) whose nails were broken in the first hdd replacement trial. Then while right corner nail which hold keybord was also damaged and keyboard is making noise during pressing top right corner letters.
If you want to buy this and just use. Do not dissassemble to replace RAM or any of the hardwares, especially harddisk.
This is my dissapointment.
When you look at the performance, laptop is doing good job with W8 and 128 V300 SSD (yes, I broke the nails but managed to swap to SSD). Startup is around 6-8 seconds.
WEI
CPU 6.5
RAM 7.2
VGA1 5.1
VGA2 6.3
HDD 7.9
If I don't destroy laptop physically, I am planning to use it for a long time due to its performance.
Edit: Additions
Battery life seems good. Wifi is on, brightness is @max and couple of episodes are downloaded and watched during cycle. It lasts around 5 hours.
It comes with 1 month McAfee and Office 365 subscription.
CPU fan isn't starting working till CPU is overloaded since CPU is consuming only 17watts. Therefore it is very quite. Even the fan is working, it is working slower than usual.
I didn't see any heat issue. Only the section where fan sits is heating slightly but it is difficult to feel from keyboard.
For these positive reasons, I have changed rate to 4 stars.

I bought this for $400. I don't think you can probably do much better than this for the price. It's very light and has pretty solid build quality. Very thin.I'm an IT guy and I often carry this instead of my work laptop on trips because its lighter and boots nearly instantly when an additional mSATA card, which isn't included, is installed in the mSATA slot and Windows is installed directly to it. I love this laptop. Slim, yet still has a DVD drive (not so common these days). The touch screen makes clunky Windows 8 so much easier to deal with. The touch pad is very responsive, easy to right and left click. Despite being thin it feels sturdy and doesn't flex when you put pressure on it. It can do some serious yoga, the screen tilting back almost 180 degrees. Backlit keys are fancyand for a $500 laptop, it looks really classy. Everyone who sees it goes, "Oooooh".
My love for this laptop doesn't blind me to its faults, howeverit's a budget laptop with a touchscreen, and that's that. I haven't tried to run anything big on it yet, but its speed is not anything spectacular. Should be fine for average web surfing/word processing use but it's nothing flashy. I also don't like the way the keys depress. They feel a bit mushy. I find the speakers a little tinny, though you can get fair volume out of them. They're weirdly located on the bottom of the laptop. The three USB ports are all right next to each other on the front left side.
Still, I would definitely buy this again.
This computer DOES have a DVD drive, I just used it yesterday to install Office 2007. Love the backlit keyboard so I can work at night without a lamp. As others have mentioned there is no indicator light for whether the caps lock and num lock are on/off. This is only a minor annoyance to me. The keyboard is comfortable to type on. I haven't had any trouble with touching the mousepad by mistake while typing, but I also use the laptop on a lapdesk that has a padded wrist pad that elevates my hands a bit and makes typing more comfortable. To be honest I don't really use the mousepad at all, I like using a hand-held mouse better. Doesn't have anything to do with this particular laptop though. The touchscreen is very responsive and I don't notice any fingerprints on it unless the screen is on a completely dark color. Can't say anything about the battery life since I use it plugged in 98% of the time.
Setup was easy. Be prepared for a TON of updates the first few days though. The second time I restarted it I had over 100 updates to install. It was a time consuming process the first day or two. I've been having a lot of fun personalizing everything though. Apps are addicting, so watch out!
I shopped on amazon for DAYS and did a bunch of research and read every review. I am 100% satisfied with my decision. For the money, this is a great computer. Glad I bought the Squaretrade 3 year accident plan. Great peace of mind for an extra $122. Any student should be stoked to have this computer, I know I am!
The problem that I had is that the touchpad is large, flush with the computer casing and located to the right of the keys. My left hand has to rest on it to type so I was always accidentally opening apps or doing something weird with the mouse. I finally figured out that it's easy to turn the touchpad off. I like to use a mouse, so this isn't a problem for me. It's easy to turn the touchpad on and off with the "Fn" key + "F7" and you can turn it right back on again if you would like to. That's the only reason I gave this computer a 4 stars instead of 5. (I went to a store and looked at other brands of laptops and the touchpads all look pretty much the same as this one. Not sure why they have decided to make it so large and flush with the computer case.)
Overall, I highly recommend this computer. Great price at $499.
Cons: I hate Windows 8, battery doesn't last as long as I'd like, there are no left/right buttons on the mouse pad, touch screen doesn't always pick up touches accurately.
I picked up this laptop during one of the specials that were offered and so far I've been pleased with it. I had an HP laptop that was on its last legs after 5 years of moderate use. Hopefully this one will be able to last me 5 years as well. Windows 8 is a pain, and this thing also comes with a bunch of bloatware. I deleted what I could but I'd have to really dig into it in order to weed out the rest. Microsoft seems to be trying to follow the footsteps of Apple while looking over to Google for additional inspiration. Unfortunately they're just moving farther from their bread and butter office software. Anyway, that's enough of my rant on them.
For your basic or entry needs of computing, this laptop seems to be near the top of the pack in its price range. I did my research and so far so good.
Anyways, it's a very nice laptop! I wanted to get a MacBook Pro but I heard Mac's don't really acquire Java & most of the students have a struggle on that. THIS ONE ROCKS! reminds me alot of Macbook pro! I fell inlove with this laptop! I was all inlove for months now! Still inlove until now! Very fast! No worries at all! Trust me, you're not gonna regret getting this laptop. okay? don't believe other people here saying it's a bad laptop cause to be honest, this laptop rocks!
The only thing I don't like is the speakers! It's at the bottom & it's slow unless you put it up high then it gets better. No problems anyways cause I always use speakers so no problem. My friends wanted the same exact laptop!
This laptop is worth the price! I actually got mine from BestBuy not here but I just want to comment & tell you all that this laptop is worth the price! Mine was even expensive than this price! haha!
I LOVE IT! I am really really picky when it comes to laptops but this one is the one that I really love out of all.
but lastly, this laptop is not for gaming though. You cannot play Sims or anything like heavy games but it's okay for me cause I'm not into games anyway! I got xbox! who cares? haha! YOU'RE GONNA LOVE THIS! GET THIS! :)

I bought this computer for school from amazon to replace another Acer computer that I had broken (I dropped it and the screen shattered. I highly recommend the Squaretrade warranty, I got my money back no questions asked). The old Acer was only a year old and had Windows 7. I was hesitant about Windows 8 at first, but after reading reviews and watching demo/tutorial videos I decided that I wanted to try Windows 8. I am so glad I did! If you're going to get a computer with Windows 8, make sure to get one with a touchscreen like this one! No sense in upgrading to a newer OS without getting all the functionality out of it. I have found the OS to be incredibly fun to use. This computer DOES have a DVD drive, I just used it yesterday to install Office 2007. Love the backlit keyboard so I can work at night without a lamp. I've been using this laptop for a month and there are several features that I like--one that I don't. I like the keyboard layout with a number pad to the right (great since I do part-time bookkeeping with this) and the backlit keyboard helps me to see what I'm doing with just a soft light on in the room. I'm getting used to Windows 8 quickly and it works great with the touch screen. The screen is wide and the computer is very light and thin for it's size. The problem that I had is that the touchpad is large, flush with the computer casing and located to the right of the keys.
