Best ASUS G73SW-XA1 Republic of Gamers 17.3-Inch Gaming Laptop (Black) Deals

Just received this laptop. It does NOT come with a backpack or a mouse (it was written that backpack and mouse are included in G73SW-XA1 on Amazon's product page, but this text was later removed). :-(

The material quality is great. Feels sturdy. Quite heavy, as expected.

Screen is glossy and has 1920*1080 resolution.

Windows experience index details are:

Processor 7.4

RAM 7.6

Graphics 7.0

Gaming graphics 7.0

Primary hard disk 5.9

Computer has 8GB of 1333Mhz RAM (4x 2GB), so it'll be expensive to upgrade RAM to 12GB(2*2 + 4*2) or 16GB(4*4) (since there are no extra free slots and you'll have to throw away existing RAM).

There is an empty 2.5" HDD compartment where I'm planning to install OCZ Technology 120 GB Vertex 2 Series SATA II 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive (SSD) OCZSSD2-2VTXE120G (I like the 750GB HDD + 120GB SSD configuration better than 500GB HDD + 500GB HDD).

Hard disk comes partitioned 174GB in C:\ and 502GB in D:\. Lots of stuff that I had to deinstall. The disk is Seagate ST9750420AS.

DVD writer drive is Matshita UJ8A0ASW (supports burning to Dual Layer 8.5GB DVD+R DL). WiFi is Atheros AR9285. Bluetooth is Broadcom BT-270.

For those of you who have heard about the Intel Sandy Bridge problem yes, it does have "New revision. Certified design" sticker.

Also has "NVidia 3DTVPLAY" sticker, so it should be possible to connect laptop to a 3D-capable TV or projector via HDMI.

Overall, I highly recommend this laptop.

my last gaming notebook, was an alienware area 51M, made when alienware was not owned by dell and before dell messed up a great gaming notebook maker.

Alienware Area 51M 5620 Laptop Battery (Replacement)

I needed a newer notebook as that and my 4 yr old toshiba were long in the tooth. I was not looking for a gaming notebook, but as this is not much more money for a gaming notebook. Now this notebook is huge, view it as a desktop replacement. Asus has also improved and not having a ton of bloatware. It is pretty much remove from box, remove wrappers, place battery inside, and fire it up and get to work. I love the layout of it. awesome keyboard, straight forward approach.

It runs quiet, and doesnt require fiddling with the setup, such a relief these days.

If the P4 extreme alienware area 51m, was not a dead give away... I'm and old gamer. I was playing crush crumble and chomp and soldering 6502 microprocessors, when many of you were not even born lol.

I love how the hard drive is setup with the partitions that make sense. Just be sure and setup your games on the 500gb partition and installing them there.

All the normal issues with new computers I have not seen here. The manual is crap on real geeky useful information, but whose isnt these days. The designers think we are all idiots, which is mostly true, but give me useful info.. took me awhile to figure out which hdmi cable I need to hook this up to my 55in samsung.

So, If you are in the need for a decent gaming notebook, and are not worried about size, weight, or battery life.

You know who you are when you buy a 17in notebook which is a desktop replacement, and then post a 1 star review complaining about how heavy it is, blah blah.

THIS IS A DESKTOP REPLACEMENT GAMING NOTEBOOK!

it weighs in at 8 pounds, it wont fit on the drop drown tray on the airplane unless you wedge it and halfway thru your lost season 3 dvd the battery will die anyway.

I am quite pleased with it as I transfer my games to this. Just buy it and you will be happy.

Very solid notebook.

***UPDATE: Amazon has sent a credit of 50.00 to compensate for the backpack and mouse.

I think that it goes without saying that this laptop gives you the most bang for the buck. I am not so much the PC gamer but I use applications which weigh heavily on the graphics card and processor. So far this laptop has been able to handle everything I can throw at it.

Pros:

i7 2.0ghz with (fixed) Sandy Bridge Technology

8GB RAM (expensive to upgrade to 16GB)

1.5GB Video Memory (beats best buys model by 512MB and 100.00)

750GB Hard Drive 7200RMP (again beats best buys model by 250GB)

LED Display, bright and does not wash out from multiple angles

Illuminated Keyboard

USB 3.0 (1x)

Cons:

Sound card...ugh. The Realtek sound card is of poor quality, the mic input is simply that. You cannot switch to line input, hopefully a fix for this will come in the future.

Bloatware, be prepared to spend some time uninstalling all of the useless tools and applications that come with this computer.

No backup disc, you must create your own (5 DVD's required)

Amazon said in description they would provide a gaming mouse and backpack, never arrived and was removed from product description... Shame on you Amazon.

The cons although annoying are not in any way deal breakers, this is a solid laptop with screaming performance from a great company. You will not find a better laptop for the price. 4 stars on this review, lost 1 star mainly for the sound card and bloatware. Amazon should make good on the backpack on mouse, those who rated the product 1 star because they did not get them should think about reviewing the laptop and not Amazon.

Honest reviews on ASUS G73SW-XA1 Republic of Gamers 17.3-Inch Gaming Laptop (Black)

the specs and value of this machine is very nice. after i accidentally spilled soda on my HP HDX18 laptop (twice...), i decided to get a real gaming notebook. the Asus G73JW was the best value on paper compared to any other machine I could find out there (Toshiba Qosimo, Alienware, Sager, etc).

the Good:

video card = very nice (Nvidia 460M see notebookcheckdotcom for the specs and ratings)

runs very cool = I was very impressed by the overall cooling system. found a review that measured all the temperatures on the keyboard as well as vents in the back. compared to my HP, this was very comfortable and never got hot or even very warm under my hands when typing. never realized how warm my HP was until i started using this.

the OK:

most everything else is good enough. memory, hard drive, screen (although, i miss the 18.4" HP screen which was very nice. the 17" looks dinky when you get used to the 18" especially at the 1920x1080 resolution).

the Bad:

sound is poor.

keyboard = chiclet style keys which i don't like (but, this is a personal preference).

--

the Kicker:

when i first got it, it would freeze up occasionally. not often enough for it to be consistent, but enough to be kind of irksome. did the updates, etc, and it seemed pretty stable. after 4 months of use, it died. wouldn't boot at all. tech support was kind of a hassle won't bore you details, but HP's tech support was excellent compared to ASUS'. after going through the RMA process, i received the laptop yesterday. the keyboard wasn't installed properly was loose and flapping, i found that a screw wasn't even screwed down on the mother board (this was so obvious, even i could see it...) and i think there is a screw missing. the ASUS repair shop that did this, well, imo, sucks and it looks very shoddily done. the real problem is that now, after the repairs, it constantly freezes up. it is unusable. i have contacted ASUS tech once again, but i'm very disappointed w/ the machine's reliability at the moment.

so, at this time, i can't recommend this machine. i think ASUS really needs to step up their notebook quality checks. (i have asus monitors which are excellent.)

i'll update this review later after the next set of tech support.

--

update May 25, 2011

received the 2nd RMA laptop. turnaround was quick.

they replaced the keyboard (w/ a different color one for some reason) and hard drive (which now makes a clicky noise once in a while). again, new setup.

after setting up windows, it did it's asus live update and windows update... still freezes! sometimes tries to boot, and then shuts itself down. sometimes fails to even show bios screen... basically, the same thing as before.

3rd contact to tech support in progress.

--

a lot of the positive reviews seem to be immediate impressions. i have to say, mine was very high as well when i first got it. it's really the long term problems that i think this laptop has and all the little issues that seems to pop up (to me and to many others) that i never really had w/ other laptops.

So, I got this beast a few days ago and the first 12-15 hours I spent debugging the other 6 hours installing updates. This notebook is built very tough and stays cool, basically all of the comments before mine appear to be correct so far. The GPU is fantastic and the sandy bridge gives you 8 threads of beastliness (the CPU). Display is gorgeous and the material used very comfy and nice to the touch. This machine is very very quite even at full load and does not heat up.

Note:

At some point the keyboard lights will not turn on for you. If pressing Fn+F4 does nothing, you will need to download the ATK driver from ASUS and do Repair>Restart TWICE. After that they will function again.

I was looking around for laptops for school. Did the whole go to best buy, check to see what was available in my price range. But price wasn't the only obstacle I also wanted something that could run games like Diablo 3. When I talked to the best buy computer guy he was trying to sell me the 800 dollar Samsung. I told him a few times my maximum spending limit was 500 bucks, he proceeded to tell me that if I wanted to run Diablo 3 that the laptops in that price range would not support the graphics recommendations. Well I told him I needed something right away due to my school work falling behind. He recommended this particular laptop because it was an open box item and it was "cheap but fast" so I took it home and installed Diablo 3 just to see what it would do. To my amazement it installed fairly quickly and ran almost flawlessly. "Almost" is the key word every now and then it lags. But for the 400 bucks it is worth it. I didn't buy it off of Amazon but I shop for just about everything on here so I decided to write a review for those who are wondering and thinking about getting a decent laptop for a decent price. The only thing I don't like is that the laptop is brown. But I can live with it. So if your in the market for a laptop this is well worth the buy. Hope this review was helpful

Specifications list a high-end "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3430 graphics (2040 MB total shared)". NOT. The product only has the low-end "Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset Family". BURNED.

Indeed, a search on Sony's website confirms this.

As such, it is certainly not powerful enough for gaming, and probably not powerful enough for the Blue-Ray player included. In any event, the advertisement is false advertisement. Buyer beware.

I ordered this laptop as a replacement/upgrade to my old one. I haven't found anything either wrong with it or not as described. I actually shortly after, bought a similar laptop (VGN-NS150J) for my mom as a present. Amazon had the best price I could find and free shipping was decently fast. No complaints. I am very satisfied with my purchase.

Best Deals for Sony VAIO VGN-NS290J/L 15.4-Inch Laptop (2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

For the price this laptop offers, it's a pretty good deal. Be Sure that when you do get it you know what it's for.

The video card is by far the systems downfall, it's (as an early reviewer said) an intel 4 family video card so those looking to any high end or recent gaming might be looking elsewhere, a gaming laptop with this display size at this price doesn't exist. That being said, it still plays games like WoW on lower (not lowest, but lower) settings and it can be enjoyed comfortably. Any game circa 2004 will run fine, but you shouldn't be expecting much from an on-board video card (also I stress that laptop video card upgrades typically are impossible)

The Machine does have a Blu Ray drive and I'm sure Sony is more than interested in you watching their new format on it, and to be honest despite the max resolution of 1280x800 the Blu Rays really shine, they look gorgeous and clean ... the problem is there is no DVI ouput just VGA which means you will be watching them on the laptop and nothing else if you want to enjoy your Blu Ray. I have a PS3 though, for home use. Still, it's nice when you go on a trip and need to take your favorite high def movie along. Despite the weaker card the computer still makes Blu Ray look good, an earlier review speculated it wouldn't be possible but it is. It looks fine.

The design of the computer is really nice, the body of the computer is textured almost like cloth giving it a comfortable feel. I have one friend who bizarrely enough will rub my computer when he sees it I have to admit it is rather nice feeling. Sony has always had a nice design aesthetic and it shows here, with a nice looking, well laid out keyboard, and solid feeling construction. The shape and feel of the laptop really has that sleek minimalist feel that many companies today seem to be going for. Which is simply because it makes the machine look good, I dunno what else to say there.

The computer isn't without its flaws, however. For starters Sony includes an incredibly large amount of software with the computer. Some programs are useful, but largely they waste your space with some very insulting programs, like a wireless setup wizard that takes you to the default windows one, no one needs to waste space on such asinine programs. Vaio update, alternately, seems useless until you discover their drivers are edited for the laptop so you have to go through them. Another bizarre decision on Sony's part.

In conclusion if you're a person who wants a computer that isn't embarassingly ugly with a sleek classy minimalist design, and wants good performance in a mid-priced laptop, this very well could be for you. If you're looking to do heavy high-end gaming or need your first Blu Ray player there are better ways to spend your money for both of those.

Hope this helps and answers any questions anyone has.

I have samsung series 9 second gen 13" with intel core i5, 4gb ram and 128ssd and I found it very good.

But with this new laptop it is bigger, it 15" with intel core i7, 8gb ram and 254 ssd, so it is even much better.

The only thing that I do not really like is win 8. I still prefer to use win 7.

Got this laptop with the win7 several months ago. Didn't yet get a chance to do a lot of work on it as it's a backup to my desktop. But lately it's been heating up like crazy. Had to put it in the refrigerator. Must say I'm surprised, as my husband has one of the earlier models of the Samsung Series 9 for over a year as his main computer and it doesn't heat up like this. Not even close.

I'd welcome Samsung comment on this.

overall I am disappointed in this machine. I bought it to help develop a travelogue blog while overseas, assuming that the large memory and multimedia functionality typical of a mac would suit. Additionally the price was great. What I found was that the machine was not loaded with pages/keynote et. al. That wasn't such a big deal as the primary purpose was to use the multimedia functions of the blog. I could not update anything on the machine, nothing., nada, zilch. I was not able to download Skype. Then the powercord shorted out in the middle of the trip leaving the machine useless to me. Unlike the US, not everywhere in the world is mindlessly attracted to the newest and latest Apple product, so replacing the cord was not possible. Overall, disappointed.

I don't know about the other reviewer's experience, but I can say that I love everything about this computer. The screen is bright and the colors are vivid. I have listened to other laptop speakers, and these sound very good. The keyboard is wonderful to type on. I had to uninstall some bloatware, but that was expected. Will upgrade to a 12 cell battery as soon as I can afford to. I highly recommend this laptop to anyone who wants a well made machine. Read the specs listed above and you will find that this machine has everything you would want in a laptop or desktop replacement. Con: somewhat large and slightly heavy, but then again your going to carry it in a bag anyways!

The G70-250US laptop is a very capable laptop but with a 17" screen it is not a lightweight. After 3 days of use these are my initial comments. The "HP Imprint" silver finish on the keyboard is very smooth which has a glassy feel which I didn't' like initially, but it may grow on me. The 4 directional keys, which are grouped below the right shift key, are half height keys which seem a little too small. The volume control is a two key operation which uses the left function key and a volume key, and that is a slight annoyance as compared to my other HP laptop (NC6220) which takes only 1 key press. The speakers and the LCD display perform very well when viewing HD movie trailers and various DVD's. There is nearly 25GB of preloaded software, and I removed about 50% of which I don't care to use or have acquired previously. Microsoft Vista is a decent OS, however I found a case where it was not compatible with my Netgear WGT624V3 wireless router (search the web for details on making a registry change in Vista). I'll describe my laptop use to be 70% business, 30% casual audio/Photoshop editing and web shopping mostly at home. I'm pretty satisfied with this laptop knowing it's not a stellar performer but capable one for doing ordinary office work and recreational stuff which doesn't require the Intel "Genius" processor. It's a pretty good price performer from HP (and my 3rd HP laptop).

Best Deals for HP Pavilion G60-230US 16.0-Inch Laptop

after careful consideration & tons of research, I bought this laptop direct from the hp website mostly because of the hard drive space & the huge screen. I was a bit worried that i had gotten my hopes up too high but this product absolutely did not disappoint! This is the fourth laptop computer i've owned, the others being two ibms (one bought through my university, it imploded two months after the warranty ran out) & an iBook that i absolutely hated. this computer is by far my favourite. It runs fast, quiet & smooth & the screen has such a brilliant picture! For school i use a lot of (allegedly) very high end computers for Computer Aided Design & Illustration classes, & honestly the picture on this notebook is a thousand times clearer than those more expensive machines. Vista has taken some time to get used to, but eventually i will adjust, just like i did when XP came out. This computer is an absolute steal. It's definitely the best $700 i've ever spent.

Honest reviews on HP Pavilion G60-230US 16.0-Inch Laptop

I purchased this laptop after comparing price/performance for low cost laptops. I ruled out AMD CPUs as comparable Intel mobile processors are faster. I have been using this HP for 10 days and have found it to be an excellent computer after a number of changes as follows:

1. Uninstalled all the trial software and other programs I will not use.

2. Ran MSConfig, Startup, and removed every program from Startup except the four items for the Intel Graphics processor.

3. Went to Administrative Services and comparing it with the recommendations on changed a lot of services from Automatic (startup) to either Manual or Disable. This removed a lot more programs that ran at startup.

4. Added a number of new programs that I use.

5. Upgraded the memory from 3GB to 4GB.

Even before I performed step 5. above, this computer was now very fast It uses an Intel T4200 mobile dual processor which is only about 8% slower than the Intel T6400 processor featured in most of the higher priced mainstream laptops. If you wish to upgrade memory, there is one step that is not included in any instructions I have seen. After changing a memory module, you must disconnect the hard drive for 5 seconds or more or your computer will not start. I found this out after an hour on the phone with HP tech support. I highly recommend HP tech support as I found them to be knowledgeable even if they are in India. Upgrading the memory will not void your warranty. One thing to note the HP warranty is 90 days with HP paying for shipping both ways, labor and materials. After that for the balance of one year you pay shipping and labor and HP pays for parts.

Everything works well, from easy wireless connection to the modem, etc. I like everything about this laptop and recommend it if you can buy it a low price. HP has a rebate on this computer until June 27th, and also offers a full or partial rebate on certain HP printers when you buy this computer.

First of all.., I've been an Apple computer user (lover) for almost 10 years that swear never to go back to PC.., however, due to a change of career and compatibility reasons I had to buy a PC.., I was SUPER hesitant, so after a couple of weeks of research I decided to go for the HP G70.., I use it to run a full version of AutoCAD 2008 on Vista for 3D mapping and engineering design and I can just say I'm more than happy, It has been the best buy ever!.. Thumbs up to HP for this one!

I found nearly 60 positive reviews (average 4.8 stars) for this computer on the Walmart website, so I ordered it through Amazon to save money. So far, a week later, this computer is just as advertised. The screen is great, the features are great also. Be sure to make your recovery disks early, however. They take awhile, and that's a Windows 7 issue, not an issue with this computer. I'd buy it again, and will update this review as I get more experience with it. See the Walmart reviews.

The computer is great, has tons of great programs already on it, and had less cosmetic damage than the description warranted. I was pleased except for the trackpad's issues-it clicks around and selects stuff when I'm not even touching the computer, which can be really frustrating, especially when I'm trying to type. But I got a really great deal on this computer. However, my main complaint was my communication with the seller; they didn't respond to my questions promptly and I didn't like doing business with them. All in all I'm glad to have the computer, but am irritated at the sellers and not very happy about the issues with the trackpad that I didn't know about before I bought it.

Nice shape, very good keyboard design, it's not the best laptop in the market for sure, If you are looking to play the latest heavy duty 3D games, for sure you should look for something else, but for daily use, Internet with multi tabs on the browser, Chat software, Skype, Play basic games, type word documents, spreed sheets, it's very useful. Yes if you compare some other laptops with this one, they may load the operating system faster with one or two seconds, and run the other software faster with 1 sec, but for sure that does not bother me for the price I spend on this laptop, in another word, this one second faster thing does not worth to pay extra $100 or around.

It has 2GB of RAM, and 320GB of HDD storage space, for me, no need for more than 2GB of RAM, (and now i'm already opening 13 tab on my internet browser + Skype + watching movie all at the same time ), and for the storage space, it's fair enough, and in future if I need more space, i will get external HDD).

Anyone who want a low price laptop with a good shape, nice quality, good branded name, this should be the choose.

I tried to check the Asus website for drivers for this product ( as type of checking for future needs and there services, and I found at http://www.service.asus.com/#!downloads/c1wax ) that this product does not need any drivers if you are using Windows 8 32bit, that means all drivers already included in Windows OS.

What a piece of junk!

A few months after purchasing my HP Probook, it began making an incessant beeping noise, that would begin shortly after starting up and continue until it was powered down. I returned it to the service provider wehre they ran a suite of tests to check everything from overheating to hard drive/motherboard issues. Finally I was told to call HP Customer service for Latin American/Caribbean users. I wont go into too much details about what a pain that was from difficulties getting through, to being routed to the "right" division, to the language barrier with the Customer Service Reps. Finally, after several calls, it was decided that the issue was the keyboard (If you think this is unlikely, so did I,) Needless to say the keyboard was replaced, but the problem continued. I had to start the entire process all over againthis time they said it was the battery. Weeks later, I finally got the battery, but it was the wrong battery for my laptop model. Finally,on the third try, I got the right battery. By this time, its been two months since I first reported the problem The beeping issue stopped for two months, then started up again. Then the "new" battery died five months after being replaced.

Now, of course the laptop is no longer under warranty and HP informs me that they already "fixed the problem" and closed the case.

I have definitely learned my lesson, I will never buy another HP laptop again. I have had a Lenovo laptop which has given me no problems at all in over three years. So from now on Lenovo or Mac are the choices for me.

I picked it for its looks and it really is gorgeous!

It is fast, the touch screen is an amazing feature so useful in so many situations, especially with Windows 8 but even when reading pdfs and browsing web pages.

Its very thin and light. I love the backlit keyboard.

Sony has included some nice software with it.

Battery lasts around 3 h on medium to heavy usage.

I love how tiny the charger is.

The screen is bright and colorful, whites are very white. Full HD looks nice.

However, it has visible slightly darker lines on the screen (it might be a faulty screen, or it might be just the type of display) which is very annoying.

The microphone catches every tap on the the track-pad, keyboard, the body of the laptop and when on skype the other party hears it as very loud scratching, so you definitely need an external mic. And here comes the other issue the laptop comes with a single jack for both mic and headphones and if you only plug a mic it doesnt recognize it'and keeps using the internal one, so you need a full headset (headphones with a mic) to make it work. That was my work-around at least.

The keyboard has little feedback and makes it hard to type.

Oh, and the web cam is low quality.

....but this thing has to be hard reset at least once a day.

If you leave the screen on and come back to use it 20+ minutes later, you just get a black screen. You have to hold down the power button until it turns off and then power it back on.

If you surf too many tabs, eventually the system stops responding and you have to do the same thing again.

I've downloaded all of the updates from MS and Sony, but the problem persists!

Buyer beware.

I had high hopes for my first Sony computer, but this may be my last.

Let me preface by saying that I played significantly less than the usual price for this. I bought this as a return--but the computer itself was unused and SPOTLESS. Overall I payed about $630 for this and I definitely feel like it was money well spent. The specs are fantastic, the display is top notch, and it runs like a dream.

I really enjoy the functionality of the F keys, and the backlit keyboard. The aluminum casing is wonderful and so far I've had no issue of fingerprints, overheating, or scratches. Very very durable. The speakers are quality, the overall size and weight of the laptop is great. Even in a silent room, it doesn't make any noise. The touchscreen is a nice bonus and it doesn't smudge. Granted, I don't see myself using it much since I use Classic Shell rather than the app screen. Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with this purchase.

Now, for my criticism:

Because of my own personal setup, a mouse isn't something that I can use on a regular basis. That being said, the trackpad is something I am not used to. It doesn't have the proper right and left click buttons, so I often times find that it gets a little off center when I press down on the pad. Irritating, but not a huge deal. I'll adjust. I'd also like to add that the trackpad placement is awful. it'd be much easier if it were situated more to the right. I can't quite comfortably place my wrists on the edge of the computer without occasionally bumping it and sometimes clicking things. Again, just mildly irritating and I'll adjust.

MORE IMPORTANTLY: Because of some odd issues with Windows 8, I would NOT recommend updating the system. My updates froze halfway through (27/58 updates). I looked online to see if this was a common problem or if I needed to wait it out. As it turns, its a fairly common problem. I hard restarted my computer, and when I got back to the desktop, I did a system restore and opted out of updates. I don't claim to be any sort of expert (especially with Win 8), so if you prefer to operate on a fully updated OS, you may want to look into how to avoid this problem.

Given that my only issues are with the trackpad placement and Windows 8, I would give this a 4.5/5 if it were possible.

Also, to other Win 8 users out there: I would highly recommend looking into Classic Shell if you are having a difficult time adjusting.

Pros

Plays any current game you want at ultra settings with great fps. (runs wow 25man on ultra at great FPS because of the ridiculous fast i7-4700)

-Look amazing. Backlit keyboard is awesome and the quality of the build of the laptop is outstanding.

Great Screen, awesome sound and very helpful buttons, for instance, can turn super cooling feature on that will keep the laptop very cool.

i7-4700mq and gtx 770m extremely powerful.

Overall amazing, portable and extremley powerful gaming laptop that gives the most bang for your buck.

Cons

-Slow HD but has to be to keep the price down so they can put the powerful gpu and cpu in. You can always add an ssd or upgrade later if you want

-Windows 8 sucks but you'll get used to it (should be their motto)

-Lots of updates at first that take a long time to install so be prepared for lots of restarting and updating that takes a long time. Once you get past all the windows updates you are golden though.

In conclusion, this is most powerful, beautiful, well built, with the most features for a gaming laptop that you can get at this price point.

Overall this is a great product, everything''s amazing, it's fast, it's quick, it runs like a Lamborghini. But the problem is it's WAY too heavy. The laptop itself is like a 7-pound monster, and the charger also weights about 3 pounds. So unless you are a super indorrsy gaming guy, don't buy this; cause it's just TOO heavy.

Really nice system but windows 8 killed it, also poorly manufactured. Here are the pros and cons.

Pros:

-Runs many of my games smoothly. (Neverwinter,League of Legends, Minecraft (Shaders+High res Texturepack) and

Splintercell:Blacklist Deluxe(got this for free because of the promotion.))

-Really cool backlit keyboard.

-Useful and easy to access touch controls near the power button.

-Useful indication light on the power button. (White = integrated Orange = dedicated graphics card)

-Amazing sound system.

Cons:

-Windows 8. (too many buggy features, one where the shutdown takes FOREVER because windows is configuring the update, but would happen randomly on shutdowns all the time. Solution: run cmd as admin and type "sfc /scannow")

-Updating driver issues. (I spent a good 6+ hours trying to get my wifi to work after updating to the latest driver. The first problem was the wifi randomly disconnecting (and yes it is the system's fault because my other devices connected to the same network still works. I reinstalled the drivers again using the drivers/utility disk that came with it, and after a restart, wifi driver becomes unrecognized by windows. Solution: install the latest drver, then uninstall the wifi drver, and scan for hardware changes and then update the driver by browsing to a wifi driver only patch found at MSI forums.)

-CD Drive is EXTREMELY Loud.

-Only 3 of the 4 sound jacks are gold plated. Unless one fell out during shipping/manufacturing.

-5400RPM Hard drive, but its to keep price low on this machine.

-The laptop was poorly manufactured, the hinged to the back of the laptop isn't completely in, one of the edges was sticking out and i had to push it back in.

Copied and pasted from bestbuy where I originally posted the review. check their prices, when i bought this laptop, they beat Amazons price.

What's great about it: Quick boot up times, touchscreen is great, keyboard is good, sound is amazing, size is great, ports are fantastic

What's not so great: Slight flex in keyboard (bearable), not the best button placement of cd drive, not as high build quality as say.. Asus

I received this laptop as a graduation gift for college, and I want to go through my experience with my purchase and use of this laptop.

Due to the nature of my schedule this year at the end of the semester I had obscene amounts of free time in my classes, so I dedicated much of the time to researching laptops so I could get the perfect laptop for me for college. I originally thought that I was looking for an ultrabook style laptop for my college years, and I looked heavily into all the offerings from Asus Acer HP and the like, and did not find what I was looking for, I liked the slim size and quick SSD performance, but everything I found that was in my price range was either skimping on specs or ports or build quality or otherwise, so I broadened my scope to laptops in general hoping to find something that met me half way between sexy ultrabook and chunky laptop. so wrote out my list of required spec I was looking for in a computer, and a list of wants and stuff like that, and started looking at normal laptops, and came across this one -

I fell in love with it, it was everything I was looking for, size, processor, lit keyboard, Asus build quality, two usb 3.0 ports!, 8 gigs of DDR3 RAM.. I was hooked.. however it failed in two points, and for me, they proved to be large points. The first thing that didn't get my seal of approaval were the lack-luster speakers. looking at the device you can not see the speakers at all, as they are bottom facing ( I will never understand the reasoning for why so many companies do this, its moronic) and shoot the sound directly into the ground. I am a big music guy, and I wanted good sound. the sound on the Asus is "hearable" but not what I was looking for. it also does not have a touch screen which at the time I didn't bat an eye at, who in their right mind puts a touchscreen on a laptop? so anyways I was almost bought the Asus, but I decided to look around some more and see if I could find one with matching specs and better sound. So a little more looking and I came across this one, I was a little sad that it dropped down to the i5 processor, but other than that all the specs were the same as the Asus, but for two big differences. one. harmon kardon. and two. touchscreen. If you are like me and had never heard of Harmon Kardon speakers before seeing it in this product then let me assure you, they make fantastic notebook speakers, the sound on this device is incredible, I first tried it by playing an intense orchestral piece, and was blown away with the clarity and the volume of the sound, it is truly fantastic sound.

Now on to the touchscreen. before using it, I thought a touchscreen laptop was maybe something that I would use once and never touch again (pun somewhat intended) but I may or may not have ever been more wrong in my life. I love having a touch screen. the first time I tried it I was not convinced, but after having it longer and getting used to all the windows 8 gestures and such, I have trouble going back to computers that do not have a touchscreen. Windows 8 does a really good job of making not just recent windows applications work with touch, but making almost all of everything work really well with touch input. (you will however come across the occasional odd application that doesn't like the simple scroll gesture and this is annoying to be sure, but not the biggest issue and I am sure it will be addressed eventually).

The keyboard. The keyboard looks fantastic. the back-lit keys are perfect and do their job perfectly, with options to turn the feature always on, always off, or on a timer to go off after around 15 seconds of inactivity. There is, as previously mentioned, slight flex in the keyboard that is not a hindrance to typing, especially if you do not look at the keyboard ever while typing, but if you still look at the keys as you type you will definitely notice the flex of the keys. not a big issue, but somewhat annoying. above the keyboard their are your typical assortment of media control keys and such. these are very useful, they share the f1, f2, f3 etc.. keys but are default as the obviously more important media control buttons. you can switch this if desired.

The ports. this laptop has three USB 3.0 ports which is awesome. if that looks like jargon to you, its nothing complicated, 3.0 supports much higher speeds than 2.0 does. they are also blue. blue is cool. included also is both VGA and a full sized HDMI cable which is nice, allowing you to operate both new and old projectors/tv/monitors/whatever without the use of an annoying dongle.

random final notes.

this laptop is not silent, but it is fairly quiet. I have yet to be disturbed by the fan sounds at all.

I have yet to get this laptop hot, however all I have done is the typical Word/youtube/facebook/gmail/minecraft activities so I can not actually attest to how hot it gets.

note. this laptop does not have much video memory at all, so graphic intense games are not going to work well if at all.

note. this comes with a lot of preinstalled junk. annoying.

note. this does come with a free year of the new Microsoft suite 365 for a year. nice.

overview.

this is a very good laptop, I love the touchscreen, I love the sound, I love the ports, I really like windows 8, I really like the speed, i like the track-pad, I like the keyboard, I do not like the

This product is...

Good sound quality A touch pad that works great Perfect for Business A nice compact size easy to set up great touchscreen slightly flexy keyboard

This is an excellent laptop for the price. Fast and very lightweight. We got this to take on vacation for early mornings and late night in the hotel. The only slight disappointment is of course Windows 8 and the changes from Windows 7. But we got used to it in a few hours. We had previously bought Samsung TV's and they are excellent so we bet on their PC being excellent also and it is.

I love this computer. Starts right up. The set up was quick and easy. Nice and light. I was concerned about the Windows 8 but with the desktop icon you can go to the old desktop with a click of a tile. The weather tile is so awesome. So is the email tile and all the others. If you can use a SmartPhone, you will feel right at home with the Windows 8. Browsing is quick and easy and it is really fast. LOVE IT.
