This computer is fast, sleek and affordable. I hate Windows 8. I wish Microsoft would do more customer research and figure out that Vista is a superior product, but HP doesn't have anything to do with Microsoft's decisions. Other than Windows 8 OS, this is a great product. It runs quietly, it doesn't overheat. We've only had it for a day, but we've been able to figure things out for the most part.

I currently have this laptop. Long battery life, quiet laptop, and graphics are good. No complaints here. The keyboard is very nice and includs a number pad which I find is very useful. It is not a heavy laptop either and works great for traveling.

I purchased this laptop at Best Buy a year ago or so. So far no issues with the computer at all. I use this thing in college, and its great for a college student that wants more than just internet and word processing. I do run games on it (Mostly CIV-5 and Minecraft) but they do not run the best. Games can get laggy at times. I cannot edit video very well, and because of this I am looking into a new laptop, but I will be keeping this until it is dead. I also love how this computer is low key. No flashy chrome plates all over it. The rubberized wrist rest and back is very cool, IMO.

Pros: Good specs for the price. The LEDs on the front of it are not supernova bright like my previous Dell, and my roommates Gateway. i5 processor is great and is still super fast at boot up.

Cons: Nothing that is to be expected from a laptop of this range. Dont expect to game on this thing with high settings.

I have had this laptop since Christmas and am very pleased with the performance and features. Still trying to get rid of some of the bloatware that was installed, but this is my issue not the ASUS laptop. Great buy with plenty of disk space and RAM.

Thinkpad is the brand we have used for many years and we really like it. Since my old laptop doesn't work so efficiently now, I ordered this one. Everything are nice except the noise sound during system operating. We have bought one Thinkpad T430s from Lenovo last October and it never make the noise like this. I don't understand the reason.

overall I am disappointed in this machine. I bought it to help develop a travelogue blog while overseas, assuming that the large memory and multimedia functionality typical of a mac would suit. Additionally the price was great. What I found was that the machine was not loaded with pages/keynote et. al. That wasn't such a big deal as the primary purpose was to use the multimedia functions of the blog. I could not update anything on the machine, nothing., nada, zilch. I was not able to download Skype. Then the powercord shorted out in the middle of the trip leaving the machine useless to me. Unlike the US, not everywhere in the world is mindlessly attracted to the newest and latest Apple product, so replacing the cord was not possible. Overall, disappointed.

I'm not sure where the above bad reviews came from, but I find it hard to believe that anyone had such a bad experience with the same system that I bought from Amazon. Looks like most of the reviews are for computers bought from someone else or even directly from Dell, and the guy that bought 3 in the last year and had all of them crash within a month after the warranty expired????? well that doesn't make since.... they all come with a 1 yr warranty, and if he bought three within the last year, then they would still be under warranty..... but I digress,,, and here is my review:

I bought the Inspiron i1545 that is sold on Amazon.com and it has more than met my expectations. I figured that a $619 laptop would be the low end of the spectrum when looking for performance, but this has all the componants of the "high end", as far as RAM and Hard disc. Win 7 makes it easy and has very fast start up and shut down times. It runs very effeciently when I have multiple windows open and I'm gettting close to 8 hours between charges (so far). I did a ton of research for computers before making this purchase, and even went to places like Best Buy so I could get a better feel for what the computer looks and feels like. This Inspiron has all the qualities I was looking for: Sleek, light weight, incredibly clear screen, and responsive keys. Add that together with the 4GB of RAM, 500GB of Hard disc, and I love the "Dell Dock" that allows me to put all my icons in one place, which keeps my desktop clean and professional looking.

My opinion is that you cannot go wrong with this system. You certainly get more for your money!

I have purchased three from this company in the past year -we have twins in college and each needed one -then one for personal/home use.

Within a month after each warranty expired, the hard drive died. Nothing could be done but order a replacement which first requires a $49 diagnostic fee....before they can even tell you what the part is that is needed and how much that will cost.

They cannot replace items lost on the drive --so be sure to have your own external hard drive or system for back up. They are no help.

This happened three times!! Three different laptops!! All with simple use at home and university. Each just AFTER the warranty expired -and they are in India -and make no adjustments to "policy" -and have the most effective system of blocking customers from access to attaining help.

Never, ever again. Burned THREE times -with THREE different laptops. Never, never again.

My wife and I have been loyal Dell customers over 10 years and four machines. All our previous machines have performed well and we have never had much reason to call customer service for anything. The few times we did (years and years ago) were reasonably pleasant experiences, though. My impression of Dell has always been that they are a solid company that produces solid products.

Not now.

This laptop, which is my wife's, has been nothing but a nightmare from day one. Pathetic battery life, hardware and software issues, trackpad problems, cursor jumping around, intermittent wireless problems, a shoddily-made machine with flimsy screen hinges that easily break.

Dell's customer service has been the absolute worst experience I have ever had with any company in my entire life. I started out trying to return the unit, but quickly found out that they count the number of days that you have had the computer as starting on the day you order the unit, not the day you receive it, so I was two days past the last day I could return the unit. After being transferred back and forth between two different departments who each thought the other department was supposed to help me, I finally found someone who understood the issue and said he would work on getting special approval to return the unit and then call me back. He also sent me an email. He never called back, never responded to emails, never answered the phone, never returned calls. Anyone else I talked to acted like they knew nothing and told me I could not return the unit. Then I tried to appeal to their business sense, by trying to exchange the unit for a higher model (figuring that if they saw I wanted to pay them more money, they would forgive the 2-day thing).

It took me two more weeks of calling every day to find a guy in their corporate customer service group who (even though he shouldn't have even helped me) agreed that what I wanted to do made good business sense and would help the company hold onto a loyal customer. It took him two more weeks to get what he told me was internal approval for the return (their system only allowed them to process it as a return, not a repair or replacement). He even CC'd me on the email where the manager approved the return and gave him instructions on how to process it. I was told I would receive a return code and instructions on how to return the unit for credit. A week went by--nothing. I called and emailed the guy over and over. No response. I finally got someone else who's email address was on the approval email to respond, who explained that the person who approved the return was in one of two different departments who had to approve the return. He said what everyone else always told me--that he would personally take responsibility for resolving my case. He gave me a phone number that was supposedly his direct number and an email. Never heard from him again. The phone number went to a generic mailbox.

After months of getting the runaround and taking every my lunch hour every day to sit on the phone while eating a sandwich, I simply gave up and decided it just wasn't worth it for a $560 laptop. We are already shopping for a replacement after 7 months of owning this thing. Guess who we won't be buying it from.

Honest reviews on Dell Inspiron i1545-4583JBK 1545 15.6-Inch Laptop (Jet Black)

After seeing some of the other reviews I thought I would add my two cents worth, as it may help out some of you who are looking to purchase an Inspiron 1545.

I've owned this laptop now for a little over a week and I am very happy with the experience so far. I am very knowledgeable about computers, and currently run several machines running Windows 7, Windows Home Server, Mac OSX, and Ubuntu. I have also worked in IT support in the past, so diagnosing and upgrading PCs is something I'm very comfortable with.

Quick Pros and Cons List:

PROS:

+ Windows 7 (it really is a nice and stable OS)

+ Intel dual-core T4400 processor (works well for most users, easy on battery life)

+ 4GB of RAM (helpful for running programs simultaneously, such as Office, Photoshop, Media Center, etc)

+ 320GB hard drive (plenty of storage for most users)

+ Integrated 1.3MP Creative Labs Live! webcam

+ 7-in-1 media card reader (almost a necessity today)

+ Easily upgradeable (discussed below)

CONS:

T4400 is a dual-core processor, not as powerful as a Core 2 Duo, or the current Core i3 (1545R)

Memory is slower 800MHz speed, not current 1066MHz (1545R)

Wireless (wifi) card is A/B/G, but not N-spec

While the webcam is 1.3MP, it isn't of the highest quality but it's okay

VGA-out included, not HDMI-out like on the newer 1545R

Bluetooth not included (though upgradeable)

High gloss surfaces do attract fingerprints (not a big negative)

OVERALL IMPRESSIONS:

I've owned many Dells, and this is the third computer I've purchased from Dell this year... not because something was wrong, but they've had good deals on desktops and laptops this year. This is the first entry level laptop that I have purchased from Dell, and overall I am happy with the design, layout, and quality of the build. The high gloss plastic areas on the palmrest and LCD bezel are obvious fingerprint magnets, but not as bad as an iPhone or iPod. They keyboard is laid out well, with good distance between the keys and a nice feel when typing. The keyboard includes dedicated buttons on the right hand side for Home, Page Up/Down, End, and the four arrow keys.

The hard drive, a Seagate Momentus 5400.6 has decent storage space at 320GB, though it is slower at 5400RPM with an 8MB cache. After formatting, you have about 300GB of usable storage. The memory for this machine is 4GB, though the motherboard can support up to 8GB. The memory speed is 800MHz, which is fine, but is slower than the current 1066MHz memory available. It would have been nice if Dell included an HDMI video port, but instead chose VGA. The HDMI comes standard on the new 1545R with the Core i3 processor. The LCD is crisp and bright, with decent viewing angles. The native resolution of 1366x768 is good, though a little compact, but makes viewing 720p video very nice. The AC adapter is the slim variety... the only issue is that the power plug into the computer fits a little loosely though probably on purpose to prevent damage to the laptop if the cable is snagged by a passerby.

UPGRADEABILITY:

The nicest aspect of this laptop is that if you find that you need more speed, hard drive space, memory, faster wifi, or even bluetooth all of these components can be easily upgraded. Reading the service directions at Dell, you can see that taking apart the Inspiron 1545 is easy and straight forward. By removing the keyboard, you can easily add the bluetooth module and cable, which together go for about $25 on eBay. By removing the bottom cover, you can replace the memory, wifi card, and processor with little difficulty. An Intel 5100 N spec wifi card goes for about $12 on eBay. You can also add memory if need be up to 8GB is supported. The processor can also be replaced, though make sure that the processor you choose is supported by the laptop's bios. The 1545 supports Intel Socket P (478-pin Micro FCPGA) processors; with the bios specifically supporting the Celeron 900, Dual-Core T4200, T4300, T4400, and the Core 2 Duo T6400, T6500, T6600, P7350, P7450, P8600, and P8700. The faster processors, like the P8700 include more onboard cache, faster processor speed, faster bus speeds, and virtualization. Replacement processors like those mentioned can be found on eBay for around $20-150. The hard drive can also be easily upgraded I installed a new Western Digital 64GB SSD, which took about 60 seconds to install. The hard drive slot is on the right hand side, and comes out with the removal of two screws. I installed the new wifi in about 60 seconds, adding bluetooth took about two minutes. It doesn't take a lot of know-how to upgrade these components just a screwdriver and a quick read of the manual.

CONCLUSION:

It's a good laptop for the price, which can be upgraded into a better computer easily and cheaply... all you have to do is read the manual, which is straightforward. I usually keep computers for about a year or two, and by next year I'll probably be ready to sell this at a decent price and use the proceeds to get another Inspiron but it will have been worth it for sure. In my opinion, for the price, quality, and support, you can't go wrong with a Dell.

I bought the second one at Staples. It lasted 3 hours before giving an error saying, "No hard drive detected."

This is a replacement for my acer aspire netbook because I needed dual core for a project,

I love the little acer netbook. It's lightweight, fast and would be better without Windows 8. Windows 8 is horrible, not user friendly and difficult to understand.

I got this laptop a few weeks ago and I love it. Acer has been known to make cheap casings for their laptops in the past, however this laptop feel very solid and well built. Battery life is closer to 5 hrs., not the 6.5 as advertised but still a good battery life for such a thin Ultrabook. Touch is great, and responsive. the 720m is a very nice touch. Almost every Ultrabook on the market has the HD 4000 integrated, where this has 2GB dedicated ddr3 720M graphics for smoother graphics interface and better capability to run more intensive software. For the price you cant get a better set up!!!!!!

Pro's:

Great price

Touch

i-7 with 4MB of cache!! (new haswell processor generation = better batery life)

8GB DDR3 Ram

2GB Dedicated Graphics

Solid Battery Life

SSD for quick boot time

Number pad (a must)

Good touch pad (distinctive click when using right or left click)

Con's:

I have actually gotten my battery to last me over 7 hours before

Windows 8 takes a little getting use to, but with the touch screen I'm glad I have it over Windows 7

Other Thought's:

Would have liked a 4th USB port

Power button could be more accessible and obvious

Final Verdict Amazing hardware for the price. You would easily spend over 1500 for a comparable Sony. At this price and with this hardware you cant afford not to buy it.

*******UPDATE******

I have had this laptop for a few weeks now and have been using it regularly. one thing I have noticed as i have had it longer is that since the resolution wont go up to 1080x1920 when you open excell spreadsheets you have to zoom out of 100% to see the full document. Can be a bit annoying at times. Other that that I am still loving this computer and happy I got it. No buyer's remorse here!

When I started looking for a new laptop, I didn't find this using the normal search. It took some time, but I was amazed to see the specifications for only 899$.

Now the prices are 999 but it's still a product that can be chosen over laptops that cost double.

I have it for over a month now and I have no major complains. Windows 8 took a little until I set it up to work like W7.

Pro:

The touch screen is awesome!

Backlight keyboard was a pleasant surprise. When is on battery it activates only when you hit a key.

It's light and looks cool.

Cons:

I would have loved a VGA output for a second display. I plan to use it for presentations; therefore I have to change my video projector.

The battery doesn't really works as advertised. I would say that lasts for 3 hours tops with WiFi on and using the GeForce video card for all applications.

May just be me, but I notice zero activity from the SSD using the Windows Resource Monitor and Task Manager. Intel RST is installed and apparently needs SATA to be in RAID mode in BIOS to work. Acer however ships these laptops with SATA in AHCI with no RAID drivers available Which means if you change it, the existing copy of Windows will not boot and if you try to reinstall, Windows Installation will not see any drives.

I've been trying for two full days now to get support from Acer but their only advice is for me to bring the laptop in where they'll charge me $50 to reload the OS. A brand new machine, unused and they want to charge me for support cause "software isn't covered by their warranty". Never mind that this seems to be a config issue right out of the box, it's "software" and they want to charge to fix it.

At the moment from my POV, it sure looks like Acer rushed out a poorly planned product with a redundant SSD and software that doesn't support it.

Update.

1. Acer service tech tells me now, over the phone, that I have to bring my laptop in and pay for them to reload the OS. They will not tell me what they use to enable the SSD cache, if not with the installed Intel RST, and also state that if I tried to enable that cache myself, their engineers could at their discretion void my warranty. I asked him to send me that reply via the open service ticket cause I want it in writing and it has been 3 days now with no response.

2. I went to an IT mall nearby yesterday to check and found that none of the Aspire V7 laptops showed any SSD activity so it's not a config issue on my machine, it's the way Acer ships these laptops. The SSD we pay for seems redundant.

All I can say is, avoid ACER!!!

Honest reviews on Acer Aspire V7-582PG-9856 15.6-inch Touchscreen Ultrabook (Cold

Just received it a few days ago and these are the things that personally I like & dislike about:

Like:

Thin & somewhat lightweight compared to my Lenovo Z560

Comfortable (keys are well placed & keystrokes are light) back-lit chiclet keyboard w/ 10-key

Comes w/ 8 gig of ram already installed

Card reader

Fairly long battery life (6 1/2-hrs according to manufacturer. Haven't test it out yet)

i7 processor

Dedicated video card

Touchscreen

Dislike:

Obligatory Windows 8 hatery (not Asus' fault though. But I do wish they offer an option to downgrade to Win7 or provide compatible drivers on their website for users who wish to downgrade themselves)

Touch-pad. Finger gestures are great but I can never find a proper area to scroll left to right or up and down. Wish they would make textured touch-pad so my fingers can find more traction & tactile scroll lines so I can scroll by touch & not worry about my finger placement on the pad. Another thing I'd like to mention is that the left + right click buttons takes more effort to engage and wish they would make them separate & not part of the touch-pad.

Card reader location. PITA to find by touch & you'll need to wedge your fingernail to pull the dust cover off (it does not pop out by push) or rotate the laptop to find it. Wish they would make the slot facing the user instead, not on the side.

Power button. What were they thinking?! Another "need-to-find-it-by-feel-because-it's-hidden-on-the-left-side-of-the-laptop" & to make it more difficult, it's camouflaged in black like the rest of laptop's bottom portion. Again, what were they thinking?!

I/O ports on the backside of the laptop. Yes, if you want to use USB 3.0 (USB 2.0 x 2 are on either sides), wired LAN, HDMI ports, you'll have to rotate the laptop around.

Caps & Num lock notification lights. There aren't any, not even on the screen. So for lazy people like me, I won't know if they're on or off.

Integrated battery. When your battery runs dry, you're assed out unless you can find an electrical outlet or a portable power bank that can power laptops.

This laptop is super fast; it boots up in about 5 seconds. It's super thin and light. It has some die-hard Apple supporters taking a second look at this laptop. The memory is smaller because it's solidstate, but for my needs (microsoft office and CD files) 256GB is more than enough. Works great, great quality, looks awesome, I'm glad I bought it!!!

HP Pavilion DV6-1230US 15.6-Inch Entertainment Laptop

Recently I purchased a different version of this HP DV6 laptop for my mother-in-law and I looked at this model during that process (all HP DV6 laptop models share a common chassis and only vary on a few components). The first thing about the DV6 line that impressed me was the build quality. It is well constructed with a metallic toned black plastic exterior. Take a good look at the shell art since it is something that may not appeal to everyone but my mother-in-law definitely appreciated having something a little more individual than the usual dull grey exterior. Despite the glossy exterior we haven't noticed much in the way of finger prints or any scratches despite the helping hands of our kids who love to "help" grandma with her computer.

The specs for this model are aimed at someone focused on web browsing and office type applications who wants superb battery life:

CPU The Core 2 duo is the best performing notebook CPU on the market and the T6500 included with this computer is a mid-range Core2 Duo (2.1 GHZ w/2MB cache). It can handle two threads which means you can have the virus scanner running while you surf the web with no noticeable slowdown. It's not the highest performing CPU out there today but it's far above what you need for non-gaming tasks and it has a enough performance head-room to keep your computer from becoming outdated anytime soon.

RAM The 4GB of RAM is combined with a 64bit OS to which should provided more than enough memory for pretty much any application you can think of outside of extremely high end gaming.

HDD 320GB plenty is far more space than you need now but again, I like the future proofing. Some people may not like that it is 5400 RPM vs. 7200 RPM but the performance difference for home users is nearly zero and the reliability of 5400 RPM drives makes me prefer them in notebooks which are hard on hard disks (because they move around while in use notebook HDDs suffer far more failures than desktop drives)

Graphics While I am a fan of Intel CPUs their graphics performance has lagged the competition. The good news is that the integrated Intel 4500MHD graphics controller in this model is a step up from previous Intel offerings and all most home users will need. I still wouldn't recommend you try and run graphics hungry 3-D games on it but it's fine for playing videos, surfing the web, doing light gaming, and running office applications.

Display I like this 15.6" display though I got my mother-in-law the 16" version of the DV6. While a little smaller than what I settled on it is far superior to the 14-15" screens you usually see in this price range.

Sound Surprisingly good sound for a notebook. The speakers are well positioned and deliver a good range. I've heard better but it was on a $3K notebook.

Battery For years the retail notebook market has been plagued with cheap six cell and even four cell batteries that could barely deliver 90 minutes of real computing use. To see HP bundle a 12 cell Li-Ion battery in with this notebook is hopefully a sign the industry is recognizing that notebook users want good battery life. With a 12 cell battery you can realistically plan to go all day without plugging in. This does add slightly to the weight but few users will notice. You will be hard pressed to find another laptop in this price range with a batter this good. Most will have a 6 cell.

I don't have any serious "cons" for this computer. The "Touch Media Controls" for things like the volume (as opposed to buttons you push) are a little odd at first but we got used to them quickly and hey, they look cool when they light up.

To wrap it all up: a good computer for home users who don't plan on running high-end games and who looking for something with above average build quality and really good battery life.

Note: I was going to buy this laptop from Amazon but I saw the same model at Office Depot for $650.

CPU The T6500 is great for General usage. It's okay for gaming and HD playback too.

RAM 4GB makes multitasking a breeze

Hard Drive The main partition is 285GB with a 12.5GB recovery partition. 285GBs is a nice size to work with too it'll take long, long time to fill that up.

Graphics The 4500MHD is okay for light gaming like Counter-Strike. It also does HD playback fine.

Sound This laptop has great speakers. They don't get too loud but that's fine. The quality of the sound is great.

Battery Will last a good long while and is better than most laptops. Most laptops have 6 cell batteries, this one has a 12 cell. Also the battery sticks out from the bottom. Some people may not like it but it is also a good thing because heat won't get stuck under the laptop.

Heat This laptop will get warm from extended use. It gets slightly uncomfortable to type on because of it. It's not really that bad though.

Keyboard This laptop is easy to type on. I can type really fast on it. It is a full keyboard with a numpad so most of your keys are there.

The Home, End, Pgup, PGdown, keys are above the trackpad and delete is above the backspace.

Trackpad The trackpad may seem a little hard to move on at first but after a while it becomes smooth. You can also turn it on and off with a button conveniently placed above it if you want to use a mouse. It also has a scroll bar.

Other Thoughts This laptop has 2 head phone hacks. Both are in the front. I'd prefer one in the front then one in the side or back for speakers.

HP Logo on the cover lights up when the laptop is on. This annoys me when I leave my laptop on overnight and I have to put something over the light to cover it because it's kinda bright.

The remote it comes with is kind of small and it can be difficult to push the buttons but it still is a nice addition so I don't have to get up and pause, skip, etc. on the keyboard.

NOTE: This laptop only has the touch volume controls and a touch wifi button. There is no Play, Pause, Stop, etc. touch buttons on this model. That was kind of a disappointment because I have to press Fn+F12 if I want to change songs.

Overall this a great laptop and I am pleased with my purchase

I purchased this for my college bound daughter. I had it up and running for her in under 20 minutes that includes the time it took me to get the wireless internet. This laptop has a very artsy cover that will make any student look extra cool.

Great Things about this laptop for your student:

Size: It's light enough to carry around but still sturdy. I suggest a targus messanger bag.

Battery: 12 cell battery will keep you going most of the day. It does stick out the back some, so your laptop is not as skinny as it would be with a smaller battery.

Power/Speed: This laptop is fast. I was impressed with how fast it would start up and run all the applications. There's lots of ram and the graphics are awesome.

Software: There is a 2 month trial version of Windows Office for students. If you want to keep it, all you have to do is enter your serial number (can be purchased online), there's no long install.

DVD : No need to have a TV too, watch your DVDs on this laptop! Even has a tiny remote control.

Huge Hard Drive: 320 gigs. You could use it for years without deleting anything.

User Input: The keyboard is great. It is a full keyboard and the keys only require a light touch. You can input a lot of information quickly. The trackpad is a little annoying, but I prefer a mouse. My daughter likes it.

Overall, this is a great buy. My daughter loves hers and it meets the requirements of all the colleges in this area.

Honest reviews on HP Pavilion DV6-1230US 15.6-Inch Entertainment Laptop

Others have posted comprehensive reviews, so I just want to add a note about the battery that I don't think any of the reviews so far have mentioned.

There is a plug in the 12-cell battery which permits you to charge the battery separate from the laptop -just plug it into the charger. The very first laptop I ever owned, a WinBook, had this feature and I have been amazed that it is not standard in every laptop. The battery even has it's own flashing light to indicate the charging status.

With a second battery, this makes life a lot easier. For example, when I'm at an all-day deposition, I don't need to bring and run an extension cord from a wall socket to the conference table out of concern that my battery will die. Rather, I can just use the laptop with the battery while I charge another battery at a wall socket across the room. Get a spare power brick ($11 on ebay), and you can just plug in the battery to charge at night like you charge your cell phone, without having to pull out your laptop and charger.

Powered by Intel's new Haswell processor, this laptop is much better than its predecessor, 17-e020us. Easy to set up, easy to use, fast, powerful. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a 17-inch laptop.

I bought it from staples.com when the price was about $450. After two weeks, the machine keeps crashing when I play videos (e.g.,YouTube, hulu, Netflix), probably due to overheating. I have to return it though the price was pretty good.

I bought a 12-inch Powerbook after I gave my old Sony Vaio notebook the Pete Townshend treatment I put my fist through it. (Yes, it looks like a stained glass window.) I hadn't used a Mac in years, but I decided I'd had it with Microsoft and Windows. All it took was one weekend and a good book "Mac OS X: The Missing Manual," by David Pogue -

however, and I mastered the machine.

SOFTWARE

The computer comes with some great software. iTunes is the best media player on the market. I have almost 5,000 songs stored on mine. With the search function and browser display, it is easy to find a particular song. iTunes also keeps track of the number of times you've listened to a song and it allows you to rate your songs. It's easy to create a playlist. Also, burning one of those playlists onto a CD can be done with one click.

Safari is a great web browser. It has a Google search box built into the toolbar, prevents pop-up ads (I've never had one), has tabbed browsing (preventing a cluttered desktop), and allows for bookmarks to be added with one click.

iChat allows Mac users to customize their AIM and Rendezvous chat sessions in ways that the normal applications don't allow, such as adding pictures from iPhoto to their profile.

I haven't mastered iPhoto yet, but it is downloading pictures from a digital camera is as easy as plugging it into the USB port and clicking a button.

Also, Macs are less likely to get a virus or be overtaken by spyware.

The iCal and Address Book look good, but if you are going to sync a PDA with your Mac, you are better off using Palm Desktop software. Hopefully the functionality of those programs will be improved in the future though.

Finally, most of the programs work with each other. For example, if someone on my iChat buddy list is online, a green dot will appear next to a message from him or her in my Mail inbox.

I also use Microsoft Office, Quicken, Dreamweaver MX, and Palm Desktop they all work well on the Mac. Office shares files perfectly with PCs.

HARDWARE

Spend the money and get the superdrive (CD-RW/DVD-R). DVDs have more memory than CDs and blank DVD-Rs are becoming more affordable. If you are into collecting videos of concerts, a DVD-R is a must.

I'd recommend upgrading to at least 768 MB of memory and the 80 GB hard drive. Burning a DVD requires a lot of memory and can take a while this way you can use other applications while burning a DVD (on my old PC, if I was burning a CD, I couldn't use anything else). The hard drive space is really cheap. Plus, if you load your CDs on your computer, they can eat up a lot of memory, even as MP3s (my 5,000 songs take up about 25 GB).

Also, there is a lot to be said for getting the Airport Exteme card (although you can buy a third-party base station for less). I am able to browse the Internet in any room of my house well worth the extra $100 or so.

I have the 12-inch monitor, but that was because Apple hadn't released the 15-inch in the new style when I made my purchase. The 12-inch is fine it's much clearer than my old PC notebook but if I had the opportunity, I'd probably go with the bigger monitor.

DRAWBACKS

-While most software is available for Mac OS X, there are some programs that aren't (Google toolbar, Yahoo! toolbar, Kazaa, AvantGo) or minor problems in software that is available (Quicken can't access accounts on Ameritrade via Macs)

-The PowerBook doesn't have a fan, which is great for the battery, but can cause it to get a bit hot underneath where the user rests his left hand.

Regardless of those drawbacks, however, buying a Mac was an easy decision. If you have any questions about it, click on my profile and send me a e-mail.

UPDATE: After 14 months, the hard drive started making noise and system performance got slow and I couldn't run as many programs as I used to. I called Apple and had to spend $300 for them to put in a new hard drive and some other hardware. They were unable to transfer my data to my new hard drive, so I've spent the past four days reloading all of my software and applications. No idea why the hard drive went. Hence I dropped the rating from five stars to four.

I recently bought an apple powerbook laptop 12",that was listed as used but in very good condition.I was concerned about making a purchase like this from an unknown seller that seemed to be new to the site-but I trusted the Amazon site. The price was really good and the description impressive;so although I knew very little about the item I decided to risk it.I had been using a dell for about 4 or 5 years;the last 2 or 3 of which were computer hell. And I had been vowing to next time get a mac since I heard they were less aggravating in regards to things like freezing up for no reason, bogus error messages that I couldn't possibly understand,e-mail that wouldn't open for 5 minutes & then didn't like to receive or send mail some days,15minute boot-ups,and web pages(when I finally got on) that got stuck when I tried to scroll.Well, needless to say I am ecstatic! Everything actually does what you tell it to and almost instantaneously.I have made the adjustments without all that much hassle.Thought I might mind the smaller screen but not at all.Within the first week-I had done mail, gone on the internet, installed my mouse, the font I wanted, had it reading stuff for me,installed games, have it tell me the time etc etc etc.It is that user friendly. There is just too much to love about it to even list.I would NEVER go back to any other pc again!I am in computer heaven!

I am blown away at the professionalism of this seller!!! They were wonderful to me!!! I have not been a Mac user and was a bit of a pain in the neck I am afraid. I was treated as I would have never imagined possible. I had to cancel my first order to upgrade after I already ordered. No problem.I received a very nice email instead of attitude. It made me want to find something they had for sale. It has been so refreshing to be put before the almighty dollar.

I STRONGLY recommend buying from these guys!!! I would pay more to buy from these people if necessary, but that is not the case!! Their prices were also the best!!!

I am 100% satisfied and know that you will be too!!!!

Honest reviews on Apple PowerBook Laptop 12.1" M9007LL/A (1.0-GHz PowerPC G4, 256 MB

A fantastic ultra portable laptop. I bought the 12" Powerbook G4 1Ghz, and have been blown away by it. It has a good metallic design and its size is very easy to carry around, this is the major disadvantage of larger bulkier notebooks. I have had mine upgraded to 1.25 GB Ram, and the performance of applications like Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop is great. You can even play games like Halo on it pretty well, if that is your thing. You can have up to 80GB of HD, and my advice is to buy the largest you can afford. I also have an Airport (802.11g) card installed, and it allows wireless connectivity with a pretty good range. In addition, Bluetooth built-in allowed me to use a very nice wireless mouse with it. The Keyboard is of good quality, an important feature if you have to write long documents in Word! The LCD screen is of good quality too. All in all it made a pleasant switch from my previous bulky Sony Vaio Lap. I would recommend this computer very highly.

This is the computer that turned me onto apple products. It is sincerely the best computer I have ever used, and I regret not taking better care of it. Even the newer macbooks don't hold up to this little guy. I rarely have any problems, and it's going on 7 years! It's been through so many drops, spills, and accidents, I'm amazed it keeps going. The screen is literally falling off, I've gone through three chargers and two batteries, and half the keys are missing and it still starts up faster and crashes less than my new macbook pro! It's a great, hardy little computer.

So far so good. Love the space, love the numeric keypad, love how the keys feel when I press on them, the cam is good, mic is good. I'm not up to date with Windows 8 so navigating around has been kind of frustrating but I love the computer. Bought it for school so I think it could have came with a Microsoft package but ooh well. I still love it!

worked great with very light use until 2 weeks after the warranty expired. immediately after, the fan failed and the atheros wireless adapter disappeared from the device manager. after researching the issue, found out that this is a fairly common problem and that the cheap atheros card is dead. unfortunately, due to limited choices for compatible wireless cards, I had to order another of the same.

it works, but I've had to replace the fan ($24) and the wireless card ($15).

I've had HP laptops in the past and have been far from impressed but that reflects on the company itself. I purchased this laptop as I loved the new design and I heard HP is under new leadership and they were focusing on quality. Let me tell you this laptop does not disappoint! It is really fast and the AMD Quad Core does it justice. Huge HDD and operates super fast considering it doesn't have an SSD. Beautiful on the inside and out. Also Windows 8 is pretty nifty OS. Just bought a second one for my girlfriend and she loves it too! =)

I purchased this laptop because it was inexpensive and had some really great features, features I needed on the go. It has been a month or so and it has exceeded my expectations, and it only cost me $320! Refurbished?! Looked like new!

Pros:

Quad-core CPU at 1.9GHz (clockable to 2.8GHz!)

AMD Radeon HD 7640G (512MB Graphics memory at 686MHz with 256 shader cores!)

Decent sized keyboard and screen (15.6" LED at 1360x768)

Not too big or too heavy, sturdy

Standby battery life is great, while in use the battery life is average

Cons:

Arrow keys are TINY

Screen glare, the glossy plastic is garbage

If you have on old system and just want a quick upgrade to a decent laptop, get this! If you want to get a desktop, don't get this. If you want a top-notch gaming laptop, don't get this. If you just want to be able to play your favorite games on medium settings (LFD2, CS:S, Minecraft, COD:MW2, GTA:IV) , do some internet browsing and music playing, and want to play movies in 1080p: GET THIS!

Got the computer in a timely mannor, thanks Amazon. Got it up and running, I was excited to try Windows 8. I was taking the leap. I like Windows 8 and after 5 minutes of getting used to the new interface it was working fine for me. We did buy this computer for our 14yr son and so it was his turn to have some fun. It worked well, very fast. Then day 2. He was playing his favorite game, and called me over because the computer was frozen. Could not do anything with it. Hard boot. No good. Used the "one key recovery" feature, to roll back to original settings. Came back up for a bit then, would not load Windows any more at all. Talked to the nice lady at Lenovo and she offered to send factory recovery disks at no charge. I will update this when we try to recover. Great computer, no so sure about the software, may need a few updates before Win 8 is perfect.

Update Dec 20th : Lenovo sent recovery disks. Attempted recovery with Lenovo on the phone to guide me. Did not work, the computer is going back to be repaired. Not too happy now, but cannot complain about the service, it was fine. I hope the machine works properly when it gets back, will update.

Update Jan 17th : Still waiting. They are replaceing the motherboard and do not have the correct one in stock at the repair center it is at, so they say, must come from China or something, not a very happy customer at this point.

Update Jan 29th : Lenovo is now not the company I would recomend

Update Feb 16th : Finally have the computer back. It is running well. Lennovo support was terrible giving mis-information and outright lies were told to us. According to the "Lenovo Depot Repair Center Repair Action Report" that came back with the machine, the repair was replace hard drive. The telephone support told us that the motherboard needed to be replaced and it was not available and that is why the repair was taking over 5 weeks. If it was jus t a HDD replacement it should have taken no time at all. There is no problem finding a HDD at a repair depot I would hope. I am a very unhappy customer Lenovo. I hope that some people will think twice about buying any product from you. As a small business owner, if something this bad happened, I would bend over backward to make sure my customer was happy in the end. No such thing with Lenovo. I asked maybe if they could put in an extra 4GB of ram to help make up for my inconvience, no reply. The only thing that really surprised me was that we actually got our computer back. Lenovo you need to seriously look at how you treat your customers.

I bought this laptop for my uncle. It is a good laptop for decent home and office usage. It is not ideal for playing high graphics games. If you need a laptop for home and office usage, this is the one!

Pros:

Screen size

Weight

Keyboard with numpad

Big HDD

Good i5 processor

Cons

Average Graphics Card

Windows 8 (personal opinion I didn't like it that much)

RAM could have been more... although this is not a real problem as such!

On the whole, its a good i5/4GB/750GB combination!

Best Deals for Lenovo G580 15.6-Inch Laptop (Glossy Brown IMR)

I bought a G580 and it failed right out of the box. Lenovo's customer service is not a service---it is a nightmare. Negotiating their phone menu is like trying to get thru a maze. I returned the computer as directed and heard nothing back. Nobody in their customer service knows what department does what. Constant holds and misconnections to wrong numbers. Then just try calling back. Finally after waiting (they said they would contact me) two weeks I told them to cancel sending me a replacement. DON"T buy Lenovo.

Honest reviews on Lenovo G580 15.6-Inch Laptop (Glossy Brown IMR)

Pros:

1. It seems to be a pretty fast machine for the most part.

2. It has the latest OS, Windows 8, only a disadvantage while getting used to this vastly different experience from any other Windows version.

3. Nothing has gone wrong yet with any of the hardware.

Cons:

1. Keyboard difficulties: (a) The standard key section is too close to the Num key section: this makes it harder to tell where certain keys are when the room isn't well lighted (very annoying!) (b) The CapsLk key looks the same whether caps lock is on or off.

2. The laptop user is led into using LOTS of junk software and software that s/he must eventually either give up or pay for.

3. Attempting to get a little laptop support online from a Lenovo rep was pretty much a waste of time and nevertheless a cost to Lenovo that the users probably pay for in the cost of the laptop.

The design/look is stylish. The color is such a deep brown that it almost appears black (and has faint sparkle specks in the finish similar to a car paint job). It looks really nice. The keyboard is also designed very well. I can type with no issues. The keys feel good and they are sturdy. It doesn't feel cheap. I'm also enjoying the Windows 8 experience. Even though the OS is made especially for touch screens, it still feels fairly natural for the laptop. I enjoy the apps interface of Windows 8. Anyway, I recommend this laptop.
