Fast laptop for a great price. I love this laptop. It comes with a lot of upgrades from my previous Lenovo. It has a vent cleaning system that keeps your vents clean from lint and dust. It has a feature that can speed up the time it takes the computer to boot up. It currently takes 60 seconds for my computer to completely boot up from the time I turn on the power and it gets a little shorter as the computer learns my habits. The keys are elevated for easier typing verses the flat type of key board that comes with a lot of laptops. I connect with the HDMI port to my TV and watch all of my 1080p movies without a single shutter or glitch. This computer is fast and does everything I want it to do. It has smart settings for preserving the battery life so it knows by the way you use it how to charge the battery for long battery life.

After a lot of research, I ended up purchasing this laptop. After using it for around a month or so now, I can honestly say that I have no regrets. The price was great for what it is, I find that it's actually faster than my desktop. Has decent graphics, and the i7 is great. It runs my design and photography programs such as Photoshop and Lightroom wonderfully and I have yet to have any issue with it. It probably wouldn't do great for gaming, though. But overall it's a sleek little beast. Strongly recommend it. :)

April Update:

The honeymoon is over. Especially when the bride has run off to Lenovo "support" for multiple weeks.

About a month into use the PC just died. No charging, wouldn't start up. Called Lenovo support (after FINALLY finding the correct number) and worked with someone who could barely speak English. After a few minutes of trying to sell me an upgraded warranty, they said that it would need to be sent to Lenovo support, and that they would get a box to us. A week passes, no box. Called support again only to be told that **I** would be responsible for both the packaging AND the shipping.

A week and a half later I got the laptop back. Control sheet on the inside said "Reseat Memory. No parts replace." As someone who works in IT and has built a computer or 2 (or 20) in my lifetime, I found that a little far-fetched. Sure enough, the laptop still wasn't working. Called back and got a new work order number and this time they actually gave me a shipping label!

Long story short... still out... still waiting to get it back.. Overall it's great laptop when it actually works. But -2 stars for godawful support and, apparently, quality control.

I finally upgraded to a new laptop and bought this one without much research. I am pleasantly surprised and the quality and speed. The only concerns I have is I don't get near 5 hours on the battery at the highest battery conservation level. Maybe I am doing something wrong, I usually get 3.5 hours. Also the ports are all over the place, this might be convenient for some but it makes it hard to plug in all the cables when at my desk. I bought a port replicator to solve this. All and all I think its a good laptop.

Honest reviews on Lenovo Z570 10249UU 15.6-Inch Laptop (Gunmetal Grey)

Purchased this for business use and am extremely pleased with the performance. Besides the speed, I particularly like the bright back-lighting on the screen. My older IBM ThinkPad gave me several years of good service, but it just could no longer keep up with running several apps, while using email and web browsing simultaneously.

Computer arrived on schedule and in perfect condition. No problems at all.

I was skeptical about Windows 7 (previous computer ran XP), but I have been pleasantly surprised with its ease of use while still giving me the control that I want. The ease with which I was able to network all of our computers that also run Windows 7 and are connected to an internet router was amazing. Easiest network I ever set up. Bluetooth connectivity is also nice. Computer immediately connected to my Bluetooth headset (Motorola H710), giving me a nice way to communicate during the webinars on workplace safety that I conduct often and should work nicely on Skype as well.

Just got it last week. It is i7, 750 GB, 8 GB RAM. What I am not liking about it is: the place of a track pad. It pains my wrist. I am seriously consider returning it.Not comfortable at all. It could be good for left handers. I don't know which genius designed it. Igot a good deal so I bought it. Bad decision. Other than trackpad, laptop is good. sound system is good and webcam is not bad either. Just want to review so people don't make the same mistake. Make sure you are satisfied with the laptop before buying it. Don't buy without seeing it.

I have been doing some comparisons with other models of the Acer Aspire laptops and this one is a better value than the Acer Aspire AS5251-1805 which costs $100 more. For anyone who does some research on this model and others, you will see the value.

This laptop arrived and then went completely lifeless after two days. Had to send it to HP for repair. HP support was easy to work with but I was without the brand new laptop for a few weeks. It ended up needing a new motherboard.. so that was unfortunate.

Now that I've been using it for a while, here's the scoop. I wanted a simple windows laptop for work mainly because I don't like the way Office runs on a mac Office and the mac appear to dislike each other. My preference is still my mac :) (Note I ordered it in October so it came with Windows 7.)

Things I like:

-it's lightweight

-has a backlit keyboard that's also nice to type on having it be backlit is an extremely great feature

-the black and red casing is attractive and has a smooth feel

-the screen is glossy, but it still looks fine/nice

-it's pretty fast (i know, it's "slower" than the newer processors, but i3 is still fast)

-plenty of hard drive space

-4G of RAM is better than 2G

-the trackpad is just ok (allows for two finger scrolling, pinching, etc coming from a mac, I'm glad to have this)

-there are dedicated volume and screen brightness buttons on the keyboard

-beats audio sound is pretty good

-bluetooth is convenient for connecting to the smartphone, pairing with a bluetooth speaker, adding a mouse

-battery life is above average

Things I don't like:

-the fan seems to run a lot even with coolsense .. it's not "loud", but you will notice it in a quiet setting.. this is just something you have to accept with a windows laptop

-of course there's bloatware but you can remove some of it

Things to know:

-no DVD/CD drive

In the end, this is a good deal on a decent laptop with a hefty hard drive, 4G of RAM, backlit keyboard, lightweight, etc. I was also looking at the Vizio 14inch, but decided on this one since it had a backlit keyboard (and the Vizio had a lot of complaints about the keyboard and trackpad). If you just need a regular laptop, you'll probably be content with this model.

Word to the wise it does NOT ship in an amazon box so everyone will know you have a new HP laptop once it's delivered to you and left outside. You may want to opt for "this is a gift" at check out.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program Review for HP Envy Laptop

This is my first Vine review for a higher end technology product. This machine is $749.00 so I will give it the best review I can. When I compare it to my current laptop, I'll be comparing it to a Dell Inspiron N7010 (google it if you're interested). My Dell has its issues but has served me well since December, 2010. I bought it from a shopping channel for about $949.00. It came with a lot of extra software and is a 17.3" widescreen. I currently use Windows 8, consumer edition. One nice thing was the free addition of Office 2010, Student/Teacher edition. Not the testing/preview, the FULL edition. I still scratch my head as to WHY manufacturers put the trial (another name for it) edition of Office on computers. Just charge a little more and put at least the Student/Teacher edition. That's another debate for another time.

Pros: I'm including packaging, shipping, and carrier: The Whole Kit and Caboodle!

* Minimal packaging creates less carbon foot printing. The getting started is about an 11x17 sheet, front and back. You take it out, plug it in, hook up to wireless and you're off. If you can't do that, email me and I'll tutor you via the `net..lol. Seriously, it's very easy.

* USB 3.0...yes! I'm surprised it isn't color coded but it's there. Now I can use the portable drive I accidentally bought. (OK..you can use a 3.0 on a 2.0 port...I know technology pretty well. ' )

* Keyboard....very nice (especially if you like working in the dark with the lighting of it); the feel of the keys is wonderful-comfortable, easy to press, the spacing is perfect!

* Temperature-wise, it is one of the 'coolest' I've ever come across. No overheating!

* The battery life is nice but NOWHERE near the 8 hours they brag about. Having been an owner of laptops for many years and of many different manufacturers, this is very common. Always decrease the amount of battery life a company boasts about. Even Apple!

* It is much lighter, obviously, than my Dell. Not nearly as light as I thought it would be but a good weight for students.

* As mentioned in my intro, I use a 17.3 inch laptop. I was worried about 'moving down' to a 14 inch. (I also use a Macbook pro that's 13 inches but not enough to be used to the smaller size.) It wasn't that bad. I plan on creating a class/eduators website and plan to use this laptop as the primary laptop that holds the software and files.

Cons: I'm including packaging, shipping, and carrier: The Whole Kit and Caboodle here too!

* Amazon did NOT package it so that the laptop wouldn't slide around. Shame on Amazon!

* My laptop had been opened before. MAYBE it was because it was a Vine laptop, I don't know as I've never received a higher-end piece of technology before. I will presume that yours will be sealed by H-P.

* UPS left mine by my front door, on a rainy day. No signature required. Way to go! (This surprised me. I'm surprised Amazon didn't require a signature. They might with yours.)

* TRIAL version of Norton. Either give me the software for a YEAR or don't bother putting anything on there. (I'm not a big fan of Norton anyway so I vote for the latter.)

* Even though the lid is NOT glossy, it still loves your body oils. ' I will be getting a skin for it very soon like I have for my Dell.

* I love the keyboard...except for the backspace key. It's making a clunking sound and doesn't respond well. Maybe it's messed up on this laptop only.

* It boasts sound quality and it has the right to do so. In addition it has built-in bluetooth-a feature Mac always has bragging rights to. My issue was a Vulcan bluetooth-enabled speaker. I could pair it but never could get the music to play through it without using the cable. What's the use of having a bluetooth speaker if I'm still tethered with a cable?? Nonetheless, the sound is OUTSTANDING with the two put together!

* The power cable is NOT flush with the laptop-it sticks out. This gets me nervous with the possibility of it breaking. Bad thinking on HP's side of things.

* The touch pad...ahhhhh, the touch pad. Tricky little sucker. I'm used to this style of touchpad but I have to say that this one doesn't fully cooperate. There are times when I click on the lower left side but the laptop doesn't respond appropriately. The same is true for the right side. The hand gestures are nice. If you're used to a mac, you'll fit right in.

* There are only 3 USB ports. Because there is no optical drive, I feel it needs even more USB ports. At minimum 4, maybe 5 or 6. Yes...it would interfere with weight and size...possibly....but 3 isn't enough for this reviewer!

* Though this isn't really a con because I knew it going in...I MISS HAVING A dvd/cd rom/drive! Yes, there are many items that can be downloaded. Yes, there are many items that can NOT be downloaded. It's a simple solution: purchase an external one. The good news is you control whether you get a high end (blue ray) or low end (CD burner).

Overall it's a good laptop that I've pretty much used ever since I got it. I still get irritated with the touchpad and backspace key but I believe the backspace key is an issue with my laptop only and the touchpad, well, it will just take time to get used to.

Best Deals for HP Envy 4-1010us Sleekbook 14-Inch Laptop (Black)

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program UPDATE 27 NOV 2012: I've upgraded this from 4 to 5 stars after three weeks plus of use, primarily because of its "HP Imagepad" (the touchpad) which is very large and very responsive once you get used to Windows 8 this touchpad works VERY well. I've compared this laptop to the similar HP Pavilion 14-b010us 14-Inch Laptop Sleekbook which has a different, VERY deficient Synaptics PS/2 Port Touchpad (smaller, less responsive). The "HP Imagepad" equipped laptops should be preferred equipment if you're going to be using Windows 8.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:

If you need an optical drive included in your laptop, DON'T GET THIS SPECIFIC PRODUCT (HP Envy 4-1010us Sleekbook). At this time, the specs on Amazon for this includes a "checklist" which explicitly says "Built-in-Blu Ray player" and "Built-in CD/DVD burner" which is not true. I think HP might be getting the specifications for other higher-end and pricier Ultrabook laptops in this line mixed up. On the bright side, it looked like this didn't have a backlit keyboard, but it does. Some sloppy quality control on the marketing end, but not the fault of the laptop. Do your homework on the specs before buying.

The software (Windows 8, etc.)

My HP Envy Sleekbook shipped with Windows 8 which I've never used before. When I ordered this the specs indicated it would ship with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit more sloppy marketing description. I have a hard time divorcing a review of the laptop from the operating system, but that's almost impossible. My personal nature is that I hate every new interface, mostly because I've become familiar with my current one (which was new and hated at one time). So regarding Windows 8 on this machine: from what I can tell there's nothing about this laptop that is anathema to Windows 8, but the trackpad could be a problem for some. Windows 8 is obviously designed for a touch screen (e.g., tablet) and the Sleekbook does not have one. Most of the interface issues/confusion I've had have to do with using the trackpad which is physically fine but it's been confusing and I'm working things out. As a piece of hardware it appears to be sensitive enough and does what it's supposed to do. I'm just not sure what it's supposed to do all the time and keep opening up new apps, screens, and menus by accident. Enough about Windows 8.

This Sleekbook comes with lots of bloatware pre-installed which I despise, but I've found that's pretty universal for computers with pre-installed operating systems. I hate it, but I can't downgrade it (I'd rather downgrade the entire industry sometimes). I also recognize that some of that bloatware I probably would install. I just deal with it.

Installation of the system does require a wireless or wired network connection.

The hardware (laptop)

Mine is a nice looking black top, red bottom. The brushed metal cover will immediately pick up smudges, but that's not a big deal (just want to note it). The backlit keyboard is very bright, and there is an always lit "backlit keyboard key" that's nice for toggling backlighting on and off.

The screen's large and sharp and serves nicely for watching media. Speakers are better than what you'd expect for built-in laptop speakers, but they're still just that laptop speakers. The keyboard is, um, serviceable? Keyboards are like operating systems you have to get used to new ones. I have no real complaints at this time.

My favorite feature is the "CoolSense" technology. I have no idea how they do it, but it only seems to get "slightly warm" on the bottom even after a couple of hours of use. This is the first laptop I've had that I can prop up on my stomach and chest in bed and not feel like I'm getting burned. The weight is also much lighter than most laptops, but still heavier than almost all netbooks.

Overall, I find this "nifty" because it really does what it purports to do, and the lightness and coolness are definitely noticeable. I give it 4 out of 5 stars for being an excellent product, but have reluctantly knocked off a star for the confusing description of features (I know, that's not really about the laptop, but it gives me pause).

I will update this review if durability issues crop up. Most of the other things I don't like are purely about the software, but I can't see subtracting a star for something that's new to me (Windows 8).

Honest reviews on HP Envy 4-1010us Sleekbook 14-Inch Laptop (Black)

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program The horrible: this shipped with Windows 8 instead of the advertised Windows 7. After a few months of use, I have found no reason to enjoy Windows 8 and it has affected my view of the laptop overall. Perhaps that isn't fair, but there is no way to separate them. It's a shame that HP chose to do that.

The bad: the touchpad isn't centered with the space bar. That's fine if this is the only computer you use and you get used to it. With two other laptops in the family, though, this "difference" becomes noticeable. It is large and works well, but it would be better centered on the "typing" part of the keyboard rather than the case. (That was the first thing my son noticed about this, too.)

The good: this is unbelievably lightweight and handy to carry around. It is quite fast, it looks nice and works well.

I use it far, far less than I would if it had come with Windows 7.

Five stars for the computer itself. Minus at least one star for the unadvertised Windows 8.

(Of course, HP has pre-installed Norton stuff which is annoying, not free and always a pain to get rid of.)

I have had the laptop six months, it barely gets used, and I take meticulous care of my stuff. It sits in a protective sleeve in my computer cabinet. Yesterday, the hard drive started clicking and went dead. This is now the THIRD time. I have already mailed my computer back to HP through their warranty program twice to have the hard drive replaced. Last time, I got it back about 1 month ago. I've probably turned it on 10 to 15 times since I got it back. Its never been dropped, there is absolutely no excuse for this. They now tell me that maybe "something else" is causing the problem, but I have to send it in for diagnosis. I used to be all for HP. Never again.

I bought this laptop. Before, I was running on a dell laptop that I got back in either '05 or '06 when I was getting ready to go to college....within a year and half my dell had to be kept plugged into the power outlet since the battery wouldn't get or keep too long of a charge (usually just enough time to print a document, then back on the charger it had to go). My dell also kept freezing, blue screen of death, overheated (would leave imprints on my thighs it got so hot), and programs would keep crashing for no reason. I had finally had enough and decided to buy a new laptop. My good friend has a toshiba mini and she loves it, so I figured I'd buy a toshiba this time around and see how it went.

Oh my gods, I love my laptop!!! While shockwave flash keeps crashing for no reason (in Chrome, at any rate) and it takes too long to switch between farms if I decide to play farmville on here the rest of it runs like a charm. I've only had a couple of issues with it so far, but both problems were able to be fixed and didn't impact anything of importance. While the laptop gets a little warm on the bottom, it isn't unbearable (dell would practically scorch me shortly after it was turned on). This is a very nice laptop and only took me a few days to get used to the new format and keys (slightly different layout/size compared to the dell). My only regret is that I didn't buy a replacement laptop sooner--or that I didn't start off with a Toshiba sooner. this will definitely be a brand that I stick with for future laptop purchases.

I own several Toshiba laptops, and this is by far the most efficient one that I own. This laptop is perfect for my needs with college, work, and of course entertainment. I use Microsoft Office Professional on this computer and so far I haven't experienced any problems. I can work on Microsoft Powerpoint while listening to music on Itunes, and still search the web without experiencing any problems at all. This laptop is designed perfectly for typing, and the weight of this particular model is perfect when typing from your lap. I purchased my laptop from Office Depot for 575.00 it was the last day of the sale, but I would have paid much more for a machine of this quality. If you have any question than just reply to this message and I'll try my best to answer it for you, good luck on your decision!

With this laptop you have the latest generation of CPU, very large RAM, a very good sound (the laptops are not generally characterized in this regard), Good Hybrid disk of 1TB, backlight keyboard and fingerprint reader with good software and good recognition. And it's touchscreen, is excellent for Windows 8. Very recommended.

Since my previous laptop is now technically in two pieces due to the plastic bezel of the monitor breaking, I wanted a laptop that could withstand wear and tear of daily use without compromising on flexibility. After looking at the other brands around the same price point, I felt the VAIO NW was superior in terms of the design and durability. Having used it for a few days now, I am very happy with this product and I would recommend it to others.

I purchased the sony vaio VGN-NW270F. Initially I was happy with it and the blue-ray. Shortly however I noticed when I charged the laptop to 100% and turned the laptop off,24 hours later the battery would be at 90% or less. This issue is common on ALL newer vaios, google it if you do not believe me. Search "Sony Vaio battery drain". Sony will not release a "fix" for it,in fact in one customer service report they describe this as a feature. The battery life never exceeds 2.5 hours either (4 hours listed). I jumped the gun big time buying this laptop. Do your research, now I will take a 85% hit in return price and need a new laptop for school starting January.

Honest reviews on Sony VAIO VGN-NW270F/S 15.5-Inch Silver Laptop (Windows 7 Home

After playing around with every brand of laptop at various stores it was clear to me that Sony does design better than anyone but mac. The overall feel is better than the competition. The track pad has a unique texture of raised dots that keeps fingers from sticking, and is very precise. The key board is well proportioned, the space between keys allows for more accurate typing than many of the newer keyboards that feel like one giant flat key.

The screen is beautiful, it is glossy so it looks mirror like, but suffers from minimal reflection. It is 780P which is fine when you are looking at a 15.5in screen. Bright, rich colors are refreshed quickly in fine detail. Bluerays played on a 1080p TV looked perfect via the hdmi output, zero hesitation.

The speakers are good. Average volume, but sound great.

The box is slightly lighter than similarly priced laptops, the textured waves look nice and do not collect finger prints. The folding action is smooth and firm.

Microsoft word opens in about 2.5sec.

The battery life seems less than advertised, 2.5hrs is about all I get. It could use better controls for volume, one must use FN>Fx keys to adjust volume/brightness.

I'm happy, at $715 it was worth the extra $50-75 over similarly configured laptops, (none of which had a blueray payer). I'd rather have the Sony design than $75 worth of extra gigawatts.

I am a self proclaimed apple fan (not a fanboy) -as I a have an imac, macbook air, 2 iphones, and too many ipods to mention and all I can say is that this is a sweet computer I always keep a pc around b/c I dont like to run parallels or other programs to run on my mac --and I usually use a netbook just for size. I saw this at bestbuy (699) and was intrigued. The specs are awesome and the fact that it has a bluray drive with HDMI out sealed the deal. So far so good -it's really fast -at least compaired to my old sony viao w netbook (I tried the new viao x but that was slow as molasis too actually took a 15% hit -200 bucks to return it). It is pretty nice looking -I kinda dig the texture. It is really heavy -I would not use this to carry around all the time (macbook air is much better for that) -but overall this is a great computer at a great price (sorry amazon it is cheaper at best buy and not even on sale there)

Great specs and performance for the price. System is very responsive and I haven't had a hiccup yet. Only thing missing for me would be an integrated webcam and dedicated graphics memory but you get what you pay for and those features usually cost extra.

I do a lot of writing, email, and a little video work. This machine is perfect. There's a wide screen, so that I can see two pages when working on a book page layout. It's very fast compared with my old Pentium 4 laptop. The biggest question to ask is what you want out of your laptop. If you want high end fast gaming, this is not your PC. If you want quick word processing, email, facebook, etc... this one's incredible. I got this on sale at Staple's this week for $349, which is a crazy low price and I'm thrilled. As the earlier reviewer noted, MS Office is not included. I really don't know of any computers where it's included. There is a 60 day trial of Office 2007. If you want office, pick up the home and student edition at the same time you buy the computer for around $79-$99.

Things in the computer world move fast. A year or so ago, this laptop would have rated at the top of the rankings for speed, memory, HD Size, etc. Now, it's lower in the rankings. So what? It's still a very fast computer at an incredible price and will serve my needs well over the coming 3-5 years.

Hope this helps :-)

Had a CQ60 computer for a little over a year and the battery gets to 40% and the computer dies. Warranty expired 2 weeks ago and HP can't help me. I went online to buy a new battery and surprise, everyone says the battery sucks. My previous Compaq, the AC adapter died after 2 weeks and HP sent a replacement. My brother's Compaq, the battery died after a year and he bought a new one after his wireless card died too. This is the last Compaq I buy ever.

Honest reviews on Compaq Presario CQ60-420US 15.6-Inch Laptop

Bought this from one of the "office supply" stores at about the price the CQ60-410 is going for elsewhere, was actually cheaper than the 410 in this store.

Screen is very nice. For the keyboard, the 10 key is very cramped, I think I would have preferred it just not be there and a bit of a wider normal keyboard, although the keyboard spacing does seem fine other than the 10 key.

The processor is the very capable T4200 (Core Duo), which is great for something at this price point, as netbooks and many other "value" notebooks are shipping with either the Atom or Celeron single core chips.

A lot of trialware, as I suspect most laptops have: Trail of office, trail of Norton, pre-installed Compaq branded Microsoft Bing toolbars, etc.

This laptop does qualify for a free upgrade to Windows 7 and uses the Windows Home Premium version of Vista. Hopefully the Windows 7 disc won't come with all of the trialware.

Went into a big box office supply store to look at netbooks and saw this on sale for $378 minus $30 mail-in rebate for price of $348, the same price as a netbook. Great machine for the price however it is a basic machine. 3GB of memory, 250gb hard drive, dvd burner, windows Vista Premium (eligible for Windows 7 upgrade for shipping charge), vga connector, 3usb ports, modem, wireless and wired lan connections, memory card reader, trial versions of MS Office and Norton Security, DOES NOT have HDMI connector, Express card slot, bluetooth or webcam. The 15.6 screen is bright and clear, has a numeric keypad, battery life is about 3 hours and I like this clam shell design that doesn't have any latches to open the cover of it. The quality seems awesome, I've owned Dell, Toshiba, IBM and Acer machines and this machine is as sturdily built as any of them. No I can't go 6 hours without plugging in like I wanted with a netbook but I am happy I bought this.

I watch the tech market fairly closely. My wife has the 13" Macbook (newer LED aluminium one) and really I love it...the "two finger scrolling" is wonderful, but I need a PC for work.

So, here's what I wanted in a new laptop (not in specific order):

1. 2 finger scrolling or at least dedicated scrolling areas (yes, 1 finger dedicated areas on laptops are nice, but still not quite as nice as 2 finger...plus, w/ the multi-touch pads, you get "right-click" w/ 2 fingers)

2. LONG battery life. And no, I don't mean "3 hours" long...I want 10 hours! (remember, each year a laptop battery will lose 1/3 of its performance, so a new 3 hour battery will only last 2 hours after a year!)

3. Performance

4. LED screen (goes w/ battery life), 15".

5. Quality/Build/Warranty

As odd as it seems, there aren't a "lot" of LED screens out there yet, I was looking at a Lenovo, but only the T400s seemed like what I was looking for, and at the cost and only 14", wasn't a good fit. Dell's have gone LED's on most all models, but not great review's on build quality depending on the model series...plus, compare the price of a similarly equipped Dell to this UL50VT...you'll be spending almost 2x as much.

This UL50VT is a PRO for:

1. Switchable graphics (switch from onboard graphics for long batter life...or when plugged in, switch to the 512mb Nvidia card for performance). Really, the best of BOTH worlds. Want awesome performance when sitting at a desk...but also want long battery life when on the go? Who else can provide this? The dedicated Nvidia obviously helps system performance, allowing graphics to run on the video card, freeing up system RAM etc for other things...or switch to battery mode/onboard graphics and live long & prosper.

2. 8-cell battery quotes 10-12 hours of battery life. I have only had this for 1 week, and still tinkering around with the settings, so haven't confirmed this, but 5-6 hours I've had easy, which is definitely more than you'll get with any other laptop regardless. The "ultra low volt" Intel processor draws less than 10 volts of juice. Its a 1.3ghz Core 2 Duo, but Asus overclocks it by DEFAULT and it arrives to you out of the box running at 1.7ghz. This is key...when you are looking at laptops, you have to remember that the "quad-core" and P9600 Core 2's are high-voltage drains...so you really have to decide "what do I want this laptop for?" If you are very rarely going to be without a power plug, then sure, get some other Asus model with a faster processor & full-time dedicated graphics. For me though, I like to grab the laptop and sit on the couch & not have to move the power cord over to the couch as well...plus I travel quite a bit for business...seriously, after a year or two any standard laptop with 2-3 hours of battery life "new" will only be good for an hour or so before turning off. With this Asus, with the extended 8 cell battery stock, the "ultra low"-volt 1.3ghz overclocked to 1.7ghz, plus the onboard video, you can actually grab this notebook and run to the coffee shop or couch for HOURS without having to worry about the power cord...and isn't that really what a laptop is for? Google "Asus Ul50VT" for other reviews on the processor etc, there are more informative articles if you want more details. The Macbook uses the UL voltage Intel processors as well, albeit a slightly faster one (1.9ghz?). Low volt processor, LED screen are two key ingredients to battery life. If you want a P9600 or quad-core or 3.2ghz processor, don't travel too far w/o your cord:) the 1.7ghz is much faster than my old Toshiba, plus w/ Windows 7 it really is awesome and more than capable of handling the vast majority of any consumer's needs.

3. LED screen looks great...I am apparently not that savvy of a screen consumer as others, so I can't complain about the screen, looks much better than my old LCD Toshiba screen, not that different than the Mac.

4. Windows 7 is AWESOME!!!!! I've long been an apologist for Windows, especially having used the Macbook for awhile, but need not apologize any longer! W7 64bit w/ the 1.7ghz and 4gb DDR3 is simply amazing, by FAR the best Windows product I've ever used...and as other reviews will confirm, this OS is nearly on par w/ Mac. I can LITERALLY go TO sleep, and back FROM sleep to an ACTIVE Outlook or Firefox, in LESS than 5 seconds with this Asus. Remember in the past, you might have wanted to look up something on the computer, but would opt not to, b/c it would take 3-5 minutes for your system to load into a use-able state? Not anymore, W7 is efficient & fast, if you switch the power settings to "sleep" instead of hibernate, it literally turns on & is ready to use in mere seconds, same as Mac's. (plus, drag a window to the left of the screen, it auto-sizes it to the left-half of the screen, drag another window to the right edge of the screen, voila! W7 auto-resizes both windows to share the screen 50/50.)

5. Build & quality: Ask tech's at your local retailer or online retailer, which brand they see back the least for repairs, and you'll hear "Asus" more often than not. Unlike other brands that farm out all the hardware to companies around the world, Asus makes most of the components themselves. Who invented the Netbook? Asus. What brand of motherboard is in many laptops? Asus. Many techies swear by Asus, regardless of the poor review NBR gave the UL80VT.

6. Warranty. Asus is the *ONLY* brand to offer the following standard warranty: 2 year global parts/labor & shipping, PLUS 1 year accidental warranty. Go through the checkout process on any other brand online, and you'll add on $100-200 to your laptop cost to have a similar warranty. Figure that for $800 you are getting 1 year accidental and 2 years parts/labor/shipping, plus Asus' reputation for build, and its close to a no-brainer.

CONS for the UL50VT:

1. NOTE! The UL50VT and the UL50AG ARE NOT THE SAME! This is probably my main pet peeve with the "VT"...when I tried out a UL50AG at Best Buy for $675, I was in love with it! Why? B/c the surface around the keyboard/touch pad is a matte rubber...no finger prints! So I ordered the "VT" for $100 ore and am disappointed...Asus, along w/ Dell, HP, Toshiba, etc figures that 99% of all laptop users must be in high school. I mean, high-school kids like shiny things right? Who doesn't like neat shiny surfaces!? Well Asus (& HP & Toshiba) here's an unknown fact for you...most people that actually "use" a laptop instead of polishing it & placing it on a mantle as a room decoration, *HATE* glossy/shiny surfaces...If the UL50VT came w/ the same matte rubber deck as the "AG" this would be a 5 star notebook, but it is a serious flaw IMO.

2. The mouse left/right buttons are a sure bet to develop repetitive stress injury (RSI). Unlike most right/left buttons, which have two different buttons/pads...this has "one" long button, that has a pivot point in the middle of the button. As such, the button is near impossible to use without pressing on the far edge of either side of the button, and your fingers/thumb will certainly get tired copy & pasting, dragging & scrolling as it requires considerable force to hold the button down.

3. 2 plastic stickers over the screw on the bottom of the screen panel look like they'll come off soon. The DVD tray seems to vibrate against the chassis when in use (loud noise)...I use a CD/DVD like 3 times a year, so this isn't an issue for me, and I'm not sure if this is an issue for all units or just mine.

Solutions:

1. If you can find a skin to put around the keyboard/touchpad, that'll fix the finger-print issue. has one, but they won't sell you the skin unless you buy the Asus from them:( Skinit.com really only sells the "A" surface skin (the back lid)...I might have to buy a generic skin and try & cut it out to fit around the keys/pad, or carry around a lens cleaning cloth!

2. Luckily, the Asus comes with the Elan mouse driver...which supports the multi-touch/multi-touchpad. Asus really just needs to realize PC's are trying to catch up with Macbook's here and not try to re-invent the wheel. The default settings it comes with must be changed for best results. Change the "right-click" to be actioned by "two-finger" tap, instead of three-finger tap by default. Now, you can scroll up & down (& left/right) with two fingers anywhere on the touchpad (not just the right edge as w/ one-finger scrolling). You can left click with one finger tap. You can now right-click with two-finger tap...just like the Macbook glass touchpad. You double tap with one finger then scroll left/right to highlight text, then tap the highlighted selection w/ two fingers to bring up the right-click menu (copy/paste/etc). Once you get used to using the touchpad like a Mac, w/o the left/right button, you'll forget how bad the right/left buttons are (plus its more efficient in the long-run to just use the touchpad I think...two finger scrolling will make you wonder why you wasted years and caused carpel-tunnel on a PC...too bad they wasted space w/ the RSI causing buttons instead of a bigger touchpad).

Summary: If only the UL50VT came in the same material the UL50AG came in and with a right/left mouse button that didn't cause RSI (repetitive stress syndrome), it would be 5 out of 5 stars; a true Macbook killer for 1/2 the cost!!! Long battery life, LED screen, Full size-keyboard (Number Pad), Chicklet keys to keep out dust, ultra-low voltage processor, reliable quality, awesome standard warranty, switchable graphics and DDR3 memory on a 64bit W7 OS. For $823 you can get the UL50VT, or for $100 less (don't forget taxes if buying locally), you can get the UL50AG. Honestly, if you are on a budget, I think the "AG" is a steal of a deal and saves you the glossy/fingerprints. For $100 more w/ the VT, I'll take the upgrade to DDR3 instead of DDR2 memory with the AG, plus switchable graphics (read: increased performance while plugged in). For $800 I'm not worried about extended warranties, although if I were paying $1500 with a Dell or Macbook I would be forced to buy one. In terms of performance/cost/features/value/battery life, the "VT" is almost a true home run. With the glossy cover, and poor right/left buttons, I'll still give it a standing "triple" base hit instead of home-run; for the cost its tough to go wrong with this Asus:) You could certainly spend a lot more and get a lot less.

This is my first computer since my Apple Powerbook G4. I decided to shop around for a new PC because a new Mac simply doesn't exist for the amount of money that I was looking to spend.

I shopped around for a few weeks and once I finally came across this model, I jumped on it.

The laptop arrived in two days thanks to Amazon. After all of the bad press about Vista I was hesitant about coming back to the PC world. Now after using Windows 7 for a week, I am hesitant to ever go back to a Mac.

I was immediately impressed with the look of the brushed aluminum lid and the chiclet style keyboard. The numeric pad is also nice and overall the laptop has a very sleek, impressive look. However, coming from a zero gloss aluminum Powerbook, it took me a while to adjust to the high gloss of the UL50VT. The screen, the plastic surrounding the screen, and everywhere else besides the aluminum lid and underside are all glossy black plastic. The track pad is directly on this glossy plastic which takes a little getting used to. Also the mouse buttons are a little stiff and I wish they were two separate buttons instead of just one. These small gripes almost turned me against my new laptop, but after a week I am used to the look and feel of the laptop and more importantly, I am very happy with its performance.

With an Intel rated 5 star Core 2 Duo processor and 4 GB of DDR3 RAM, I have no complaints about performance. I use my laptop for movies, music, web browsing, and college. I don't often play games but it is nice to know it's a definite possibility.

The UL50VT boots up fast and lasts for a long time. With brightness maxed out while doing web surfing and homework, I am averaging about 6-8 hours. This is more than enough already and if I lower the performance and brightness the battery lasts for around 10.

The screen is widescreen and bright. I do wish the resolution was higher than 1366 x 768. For a 15 inch laptop I found that to be a little low, but it is not a show stopper.

Overall the Asus UL50VT is a sleek, well performing portable laptop. This laptop is well worth the price and so far has easily handled everything that I have thrown at it. If you don't mind the glossy appearance and can get past the less than great track pad and mouse buttons, the Asus UL50VT is a very solid purchase.

Best Deals for ASUS UL50Vt-A1 Thin and Light 15.6-Inch Black Laptop - 11.5 Hours

This computer replaced a six-year old Toshiba Satellite laptop that served flawlessly, but is clearly in its final, noisy days.

While it's far too soon to know if this Asus product can match that length of service, their motherboards enjoy a good reputation among the build-it-yourself crowd and their netbooks have been well received. After exercising this computer for a short time, I'm very impressed.

This laptop is very strong in four areas that helped me narrow my selection from a dizzying array of laptop choices in its price range:

(1) display size and quality (15.6 inches, crisp and bright, separate video processor with 512 MB of its own memory)

(2) system memory (4 GB DDR3)

(3) battery life (Asus advertises 12 hours; more on how they get to this below); even without the tweaks that get you to the high end, it offers great battery performance.

(4) length and scope of warranty coverage.

About the battery life which other reviewers have criticized as not meeting the marketing hyperbole (Amazon indicated 11+ hours and a sticker in the packaging claims 12+ hours)....

Asus has a power control scheme offering the option to select from two video adapters: a discrete NVIDIA Gforce G210M video processor or the integrated Intel display adapter. Users then have to decide whether they want enhanced video or extended battery life. A small power button above the keyboard lets you make this selection. You can also select an auto mode, which makes the choice for you based on whether using AC power or the battery is being used.

Asus also includes a power management utility offering four power setting scenarios (high performance, entertainment, quiet office or battery saving). Each of these can be further customized (display blanking, screen savers, sleep mode, etc.) as you determine your balance of performance vs. battery life.

So: can you really get 11 or 12 hours of battery time? Maybe.

IF you select the battery saving mode, and IF you accept the diminished video performance, and IF you give up power-hungry goodies (like with Windows sidebar) and if you avoid power-intensive tasks (like CD burning or video rendering)...you might get there. I always figure the marketing figures are make some best-case assumptions...

What I have done it used this machine for six untethered hours while enjoying the enhanced video and writing to multiple DVDs. As an upgrade to an old machine that could barely get to 90 minutes away from an AC outlet: six hours battery time for full-featured operation is excellent.

Their support seems better than many other manufacturers. I registered with the Asus support site, and posted a question about operating the webcam. Within five hours, I had an email response. Very impressive. Although I haven't tried it --or had a need to-they also have a 24/7 toll free number.

Asus offers the following mix of warranties on this computer in the US and Canada:

-30 days for "bright dot" (hot pixels...they don't say anything about about dead ones!) on the display. ANY singe pixel qualifies for this.

-1 year on the the battery

-2 years on the computer

-1 year accidental damage coverage (which they immediately extend to 2 years when you register online)

-two way shipping for any repair/RMA situations.

For the money, this is a superb laptop choice and Asus appears ready to stand behind it.

Why not five stars?

Small issues with the overall package.

Each is minor, a and couple are a matter of personal preference rather than an actual flaw. However, they probably reflect how Asus achieved this combination of price point and computer performance. While they don't detract from the overall value of this machine, they collectively stand between four and five stars. If there were a 4.5 star option, this computer would be there.

Gripes:

(1) No recovery media is included. An automated utility prompts you to run it at setup (or you can do so anytime you'd like to afterward). You will need four DVDs to do this; if you use DVD-RW media, this will take well over an hour). Just like with user manuals in soft copy: this is something that should not be pushed to the consumer, and should have been in the box. Even though the utility interface indicates success (or not), I'm left with less confidence in my self-made recovery media than I would have with media that shipped from the factory.

(2) No speaker volume control wheel. Volume is controlled either with via the task bar (using a mouse or touchpad) or FN keys.

(3) No physical switch to turn the wireless adapter on/off. This is done either through a FN key or a task bar icon (and you may not remember the latter, because it can be hidden under Windows 7 options!).

(4) The webcam software was not easy to identify. This was mostly because of a silly, cartoonish user interface that also makes it hard to use. They could have done better by talking to at least one user.

(5) Others have written about the super glossy wrist-rest area. It's an an absolute fingerprint magnet and skin oil pallate. A matte or brushed finish, similar to this machine's outside cover could have eliminated this. I'm considering fine-grain sandpaper to roughen this area up!

(6) I prefer a power adapter that plugs in at the rear of a laptop. This one plugs in on the left side, which can be in issue depending on the AC outlet location.

(7) One of the three USB ports is at the front right of the machine. If you use this for a mouse (as many right-handers might), you'll have mouse cordage right where you might prefer to place the actual mouse.

None of those are serious enough to diminish a "buy with confidence" bottom line for this computer. It's light, powerful, power-stingy and full-featured.

Honest reviews on ASUS UL50Vt-A1 Thin and Light 15.6-Inch Black Laptop - 11.5 Hours

So, maybe you don't get 12 hours? But at least that's a ballpark figure being thrown around... Especially when you consider the smart power management Asus has thrown in this peppy, thin, cool to the multi-touch, 4GB DDR3, 16:9 LED, laptop. The intel core 2 duo + nvidia G210M is a potent combonation.

The system claims EXPRESS GATE boots in 8 secs, and it really is 20 secs to a Hulu video. Windows 7 Premium took my picture instead of a password after an impressive 1:05 and was streaming video in another 12. I easily overclocked the 1.3Ghz duo by 5% using the super customizable Asus bios. I want to tweak the embedded linux, or maybe just run ubuntu on that 500GB hard drive (it came pre-partitioned with two 250GB partitions).

There are two POWER buttons. One controls windows power options; stepping down the processor. It has 4 power modes, that could frankly use some tuning. Too bad I can do a better job customising, but Windows 7 isn't saving my desktop prefrences right now.

Turning off the discrete grapics also turns off Aero. Then this HUGE 15" becomes a netbook, seemingly gaining unplugged longevity by closing the lid. Standby resumes in an impressive sub 5 secs. Maybe I'm the only one who remembers when computers were slow. I haven't had this computer plugged in all day! The touch pad seems a bit off at first, but then you realize that it has to be offset to the left to keep your palms out of the way. This allows for a full keypad to the right and a plethora of FN keys. And did I mention the multi touch trackpad? It does three fingers. Now I'm considering the 2 yr warranty and 1 year accidental damage that is included?!

Best machine for the OPTIONS!

[EDIT]

I have loaded Ubuntu 9 (thus triple booting the laptop). You can enable all CompizFusion desktop effects, including the desktop cube with no jitter (very smooth animations)! Very fast, very impressive. Also, unexpectedly, Ubuntu picked up on the multi-touch trackpad. I haven't played around with it too much to figure out how to change the two finger tap to be right click (it is set to do some desktop effect right now), but knowing it is possible is awesome.

Also, I only plug in this laptop at night, while I am sleeping. I have been using it all day at work (I am an IT systems administrator) and even watched a couple full length movies while working and still never had to plug it in. WOW! Asus has it loaded up with the "Power4Gear Hybrid" program that lets you set your power options (High Performance, Entertainment, Quiet Office, & Battery Saving). The built in defaults are fine for most people, but again the options are what sets this baby apart. You can define the Maximum and Minimum processor state, toggle Turbo mode, adjust display brightness, change sleep / hibernate options, enable disable devices (camera & ODD), and base it all on the plugged in state (thus giving you eight 8! power modes).

I did a fair amount of research on machines in this category...for the money, ASUS is the clear winner. This is one sleek machine! The battery life is great, it feels like it's built to last and the performance (overclocked cpu with the VT's) is great for this class of machine (thin/light/long battery life). The only negatives are tolerable: 1. It could stand to have a better(1.3mp) webcam. 2) The display does have somewhat limited viewing angles, but then again how many viewing angles does one person need?? I was initially concerned about these two drawbacks before I purchased the machine but now that I have it...it's really of no concern any longer, I'm very pleased with this machine. Did I mention that this a damned good looking piece of hardware! LOL!

Another note worth mentioning, ASUS recently beat "everyone" in laptop reliability ratings, including Apple and Sony...and it wasn't even close!

You can lay your money down for this machine and not be disappointed.

Maybe I'm biased because my old laptop was literally falling apart, but I love this laptop. It works quickly and efficiently. It's very organized. I wasn't willing to spend an insane amount on a computer just to surf the web. I have had incredibly good luck with HP products. I would advise anyone looking to purchase a simple laptop to give this one a shot.

I needed to replace an aging laptop and while I wasn't excited about moving from Windows XP to 8, it has not been as bad as I had thought it would. I was able to import all of my old settings using Microsoft's Easy Transfer program and external USB drive and finally managed to import all of my old Outlook Express email messages by getting Microsoft's free Essentials Live Mail as a replacement for the out of the box Windows 8 Mail program. I purchased a third party tool to add back the Windows 7 start button (if you can wait for 8.1 you can do without the $5 add on).

This laptop comes with 4 GB RAM and seems a little slow to me. Not terrible, but I went ahead and ordered more RAM. The motherboard on this machine only supports a max 8 GB RAM and I wish I had known that HP had configured this with a 4 GB RAM module in one socket with the other free. I could have just bought a 4 GB RAM module to add in, but it doesn't hurt to have a matched set of RAM and I would not have known the exact specs of the RAM chip that HP had in this laptop.

Overall a nice performer the screen is big and decent color. The track pad gets in my way and it is nice to be able to just double click on the top left and turn it off. The options to swipe from edge to edge and change from one open app to another annoyed me too that can also be turned off in the track pad options if you want.

The 1 year parts and service warranty is nearly worth the price of the laptop alone in my opinion.

UPDATE: After a few weeks of use, I'm still okay with the quality and performance. The one thing I really don't like is the limited screen resolution. I thought maybe there would be an updated video driver or something, but it really is just limited to two screen settings. Not terrible, but kinda surprising with the state of the art that it would be such a minimal choice of screen resolution.

This laptop isn't bad at all for the price. I bought this for college use and it will do that fairly well because of how thin and light it is. I was surprised that it even had a light up keyboard even when being so thin. The touchscreen couldn't be better, it's fluid and responsive. As for the CPU and GPU, before I get into that I'll say that my main computer before this was a custom built desktop with a AMD FX-4100 unlocked processor and an AMD Radeon HD 7770 as well as 8GB of RAM. The processor is clocked to 4.2GHz, and yet somehow, I prefer this laptop's AMD A10 CPU over the FX-4100. Both run the same Windows 8 OS, and yet, copying 12GB of data on the laptop took around 5 minutes, while doing the same on the desktop took more than twice that amount. There are many more situations where the A10 stood out against an overclocked FX chip. The A10 also comes with a built in GPU, as a competitor to Intel's HD Graphics 4000, and I must say, AMD has won this competition. The graphics is better than the graphics on my year old Dell XPS L502X, which is a big heavy laptop and was intended for performance, it came with an i7 and a Nvidia GeForce 525M. Some games like Syndicate do lag a lot even on lowest settings, but other games like Just Cause 2 and even Sniper Ghost Warrior 2 will be PLAYABLE at the highest possible settings. By playable I mean yes there will be a lower FPS, but it'll be high enough to play. Decrease the graphics settings a bit and both games play lag-less and with great graphics.

There is one issue when it comes to the hardware. I find the touchpad to be ridiculously annoying to use as it's not very accurate. The overall feel of the product seems very plastic-y and I expected a better feel for a laptop at this price. But then again, the materials used for it is the reason why it's not so heavy. Also the webcam quality sucks. It could have been way better. But I rarely use it so it doesn't bother me.

All in all I really like this laptop, but it did take some time to get used to it. People complained about the keyboard but for me it's just fine. It's a bit cramped but I can still type on it pretty fast. And as for the touchpad, you won't want to use it when you have such a great touchscreen. I recommend this laptop to everyone, regardless of whether you want a laptop for gaming, work, or entertainment. The speakers on it are tiny but they're loud and sound great with the surround sound option so watching movies on it is a pleasure as well. I bought this laptop with high expectations and in most aspects, this laptop surpassed those expectations.

If you are looking for a laptop that is fast, plenty of Hard Drive, USB ports, HDMI connector to hook to your TV, then this one may be one for you. I wanted speed, large hard drive, but the one thing I did forget to check was the CD Reader/Writer. It doesn't come with a CD Reader/Writer, but I ordered a external CD writer from Amazon for $28. Since I don't use CD that much, not a big deal to me.

Good processor speed, lots of RAM and huge hard drive. This is a widescreen layout, so you get a dedicated numeric pad, but you will be typing "left of center" if you hold it on your lap. The laptop is very lightweight, partly because it has no internal optical drive. The backlit keyboard is a nice feature for dimly lit areas. Screen resolution is very sharp. The touchscreen is very responsive, but I've had problems with the browsers and web pages not responding appropriately. For example, trying to close a pagetab by touching the "X", or trying to display the contents of a dropdown list by clicking the arrow. Often it takes two or more touches (or I give up and use the mouse). The brushed metal looking case (actually hard plastic) feels sturdy.

I bought this to replace my gateway laptop and the laptop will be primarily used for school. I have a custom built desktop that blows other peoples computers away, so I didn't expect the tablet to compete with that. I just wanted something light enough to carry around and study with. Right out of the box the computer worked great. I had no issues connecting it to my router. It took a little getting used to with the apps and trying to navigate around but once I figured it out ( which took only 20 minutes to do) I found that I was loving the laptop. I love that anything that i install on the laptop I can access on the main app screen. The touch screen I love. The lack of a CD drive was no problem. I just got an external CD drive and was able to install the programs in needed to easily.

This is a great laptop. I read reviews and info about this for more than a month before laying down the cash for it. I've been extremely happy with it. It's thin and sexy. It's light (especially for a 15 inch laptop). It's extremely cool. The performance is good but not amazing. I mostly work with music editing and notation software and this laptop has handled all them fine. I play games online with it and I have yet to find a game that it can't handle (it should be noted I only play games from the browser and have no idea how a real computer game would do, but I know since this doesn't have a graphics card it probably wouldn't do well with 3d graphics, but I dont really know.) For everyday computing this computer has all the power you need. The 15 inch model is great too. The keyboard is full sized (which was somewhat of an adjustment after using cramped keyboards for so long) and the number pad is extremely helpful (at least to me).

The battery life is why you buy this computer. All day computing is no lie. I used to own a Dell and a Toshiba which got about 3 hours battery life at best, and then up to 10 minutes as they got old. It's been hard to break the habit of packing my power adapter when I leave but I've never needed it. I can go to school all day, take my computer to class, work in the library or cafeteria and never need to worry about running out of juice. If I crank it up to "High Performance" I can get a solid 5 to 6 hours of battery, on "Power Saver" I get an easy 8 and a half and if I turn off the WiFi I can get a little more then 10 hours. I've never, never, never, run it down completely during normal use.

Overall a great computer at a great price. Everything you need with an unbelievable battery life. Free yourself from the wall socket and buy this computer!

Unless you play very demanding 3D games, the Acer AS5810(15.6"), AS4810(14.4") or AS3810 (13.7") is the one for everyone.

Thin and light, 5.4 to 3.5 lb, < 1", nothing else I know of is like this.

Cool, very thoughtfully designed to avoid heat buildup. Metal top, lots of spaces between keys. Bottom is never warm, palm rest area is absolutely cold, incredible.

Quiet, as it is so cool, the fan never speeds up to make noticeable noise.

LED backlight, should last forever and save battery.

8-hour battery life, never need to carry the AC adapter for the day. Never worry about empty battery, just concentrate on your work.

Metal lid, looks VERY VERY good. This thing looks better and slimmer than MacAir, no kidding.

Number keys included.

Only $, even cheaper than other thick, heavy, hot and noisy craps.

My son, senior high, carries it in his backpack together with many thick books. This is not a demanding 3D gaming machine, exactly a good thing for a student. If you want to save $, then get the Dell i1545, just heavier, thicker and shorter battery life, but a real dual core CPU, unbelievable deal.

The only stupid thing: I've seen crap ware installed in new PCs before, but Acer did it to the extreme on this laptop, like 100 trial games etc.

It took me a whole day to uninstall them. Because no Vista CD included, so I could not just do a clean installation. Then I used Ghost to make a full back up for the partition 2, about 5 GB. No need to back up the partition 1, about 10 GB, it is the factory restore area and you can use Acer's utility to burn them to DVD disks. Next time when a restoration is need, I can just restore the ghost and no need to uninstall the numerous crap ware again.

I have used several laptops (work and personal), including the hyped ThinkPad T61, T500, T400.

But the Acer Timline series laptops have really surprised me in terms of build quality, price, form factor, and battery life.

If these are the things you care most, the Timeline is for you!

My T400 never got passed 4hrs at the lowest CPU setting and LCD brightness. The Timeline consistently gives me over 5hrs (not the 8hrs+ as they claimed though) using Windows XP.

Windows XP installation (over the default Vista Premium) was a straightforward task, as Acer website provides XP drivers so you don't have to search anywhere. I tried both the 15.6" and the 14" version and personally I'd like the 14" for its screen size, though both share the same 1" thin dimension and similar battery life. The 15.6" keyboard comes with a numeric keypad.

For those people who complained about CPU spiked at 100% at random or eject button locked up the laptop, I had the same problems. After I updated it with the latest Intel graphics driver and Acer BIOS, all the problems went away!

I am usually picky about what I use, but I have to give Acer a thumb up for such a great job. After all, it only costs $549!

Can't say the same for Lenovo ThinkPad which costs more, thicker (>1.2"), and only average battery life.

What's the point of having wireless internet if you must plug in your power regularly? With the Timeline, I can truly roam most of my day without fear of running out of power.

My only complain about the 14" version: if the mouse pad could move to the left about 1", that would be perfect. As I type, my right palm occasionally touches the mouse pad that causes the mouse cursor to move. If Acer did this on the 15.6" version, why not on the 14"?

OK!!!! Lets start!

First let me tell you what I had before.....

a Gateway P-6860FX

Specs:

C2D 1.83GHz CPU

4GB RAM 667MHz DDR2

GeForce 8800M GTS GPU

17" 1440 x 900 LCD

320GB HDD

Definitely a gaming laptop. And now I switch to the Acer Timeline.

Specs:

Pentium 1.3GHZ (single core) CPU

3GB RAM 1066MHz DDR3

Intel GMA 4500MHD GPU

15.6" 1366 x 768 LCD (LED backlit)

320GB HDD

Now this is an "extreme" change for me. Going from Performance to Portability. Some people might think, what the f**k are you doing? You can't play games anymore. NO GTA4, Grid, Crysis, Far Cry 2, NO NOTHING. But guess what? I'm not complaining. This "little" laptop is pretty damn awesome! Well It is a little underpowered but only if you try to look for it.

Of course I'm basing my experience with this "lappy" on Windows 7 RTM. It comes installed with vista and bloatware. So just make sure you get rid of that crap and you'll be happy.

Here are my thoughts on performance....

Well actually, first let me tell you what programs I was able to run smoothly and define what "smooth" meant for each.

iTunes: Yes iTunes. And I think this is Apple's fault. My P-6860FX was laggy with iTunes. Now running an underpowered laptop makes things better? It weirdly true.

Photoshop CS4: It's not fast, but it is usable. I works for most of your photo editing needs.

Ummm. Actually that's all I got to show off right now. I've only had it for a day or so.

Oh! lets talk about battery life!

As you know they never real last as long as the company says. Unless you dim it all the way down, no wireless, power saving mode, etc. But I was able to get about 6 and a half hours with Wifi on. So not to shabby.

Keyboard!!!!

It has a chicklet style keyboard. Very responsive, good spacing and a NUM pad!!!! How I love NUM pads!!! This keyboard is was very easy to get used to.

Touchpad:

It's has multitouch capabilities. I love the pinch zoom for photos. Works pretty well. But at times it does get a little glitchy.

Speakers:

There small and not that loud. They don't really give you a theatrical bass pounding feel. But they are very "accurate" sounding.

Design:

All you have to do is look at the picture. It's very sleek and SEXY. I love takin' this around with me. And with ease weighing around 5 pounds.

OVERALL:

This laptop is totally awesome!

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO:

BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here is the link to the Windows 7 Upgrade offer on Acer's website. You have to have purchased the system between June 2009 and January 2010, as I recall. The registration process is a bit tedious. Right now, it says you have until January 2010 to request the upgrade, and it will be shipped on a first come first served basis. I've had the computer for about a month. I like though I'm not getting anywhere near the 8 hours battery life advertised. Perhaps I don't have all the power saving features deployed. I haven't changed any settings since I took it out of the box. The screen is great and I don't find the mouse buttons hard to operate (which was a complaint of many). One of the plastic caps covering the hinge on the left side popped off because I was probably trying to open the screen too far, but it didn't give me the best feeling about long-term durability. We'll see--I've had nothing but IBM thinkpads for years and last year bought a Lenovo netbook.
