I got this one with 16GB RAM, a slower 1TB HDD, and Windows 7. It has a 265GB boot drive on it too. My wife gets a Dell discount through her job and I saved probably $200-300 and got away with a very powerful machine. I wanted a powerful machine to run Photoshop and Painter but I realized something ... this thing can play any game I put on it. I started with my all time favorites and ones that I haven't been as of yet able to run. Tron 2.0, Star Wars TFU 1 & 2. Now I'm taking a stab at Call of Duty Black Ops 2! This ain't Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear we're swinging now! Now all these High end games on Steam are plausible now.

It's smaller than I'm used to (my other car is a "17 HP) and I'm having to learn how to not have a Key pad and G-keys. But the size doesn't really matter I'm finding out. The key to immersion in a game is the audio, not necessarily the size of the screen. I'm getting totally great results with a good set of headphones or my Altec Lansing 5 pt sound system via the "1/8 plug (really loud with wooden floors). I am jazzed and now I an buying Steam games instead of Mp3s and Kindle books lately.

My one big complaint is that 1. It is a Windows computer. It glitches all over the place randomly and I even needed a special tech support session already to get the Optical drive to recognize Blueray discs. As usual, Windows was updating for the first 72 hours and it made the unboxing real lame from the get-go.

2. The "Killer wireless" suuuuuuuucks. It's killing me. I get no wifi reception 10-15 feet away from the router. Maybe the router sucks? Nope My HP gets great signal all the way in the back bedroom. Heaven forbid there should be a wall in between the router and you ... I can't even sit on the swing on the porch because I don't get enough signal to run Twitter ... Twitter!

3. The Left and right click buttons are cheezy. They were obviously an after thought. I know the little box lights up and everything, but you can't count on the thing to work when your thumb hits it. Again, my HP laptop mouse buttons feel like they were made with years of use in mind (almost 4 years now to be exact). The Alienware people are probably assuming that Gamer geeks will have a really expensive mouse ready to plug in so no biggie.

How am I supposed to kill terrorists on the spur of the moment with no external mouse, though? I mean ... some of these dark Jedi are hard enough to dismember as it is with out you missing an attack in the middle of a fight!

Also, why is the t-Pad left of center when a more comfortable position for gaming ... on a gaming laptop ... would be farther on the right? Typing would be awkward, yes, but you could have a physical kill switch close by (like my HP!!!!).

4. The Killer wireless Suuuuuuuucks. It's probably going to dump when I hit "Preview your Review" right now. I actually get a more robust internet experience using the 4G Hot spot via USB on my iPhone. What a let down. Yes it's for gaming, but you need to justify even having a wireless capability in the first place ... it's a laptop for crying out loud.

I really like the battery life. If you put it in powersaver mode, you can get some pretty good battery life out of it. I put the windows theme in "High contrast black" and turn off the Alien FX and I can add an hour onto the whole thing. If someone knows how I can "overclock" the wireless thingy and make it jam, please let me know and I'll add the star to make it a high five. If I've missed some obscure check box on some hidden utility menu (Uncheck the "Make it suck" box), contact me and I'll make the change.

In conclusion, my grand kids may be gaming on this laptop, it's that good. If you need to be portable, like me, and don't want a sissy thin and light net book, this would be the way to go. I write and blog and edit photos and design flyers and research online in a mobile setting many times, and I just couldn't do it with a battery-sucking 17" HD screen all day long. Well, you can't do it all day with this thing either, but at least it has pretty lights. The Killer Wireless sucks.

***********UPDATE 08-21-2013*************

The wireless got fixed. We stumbled on the problem when we had to fix the keyboard! The "I" key started to get real sensitive, when I'd hit the "I" key, I'd get [ii] and sometimes it would stick and I'd get [iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii}. When I'd type a bunch of "O's" I'd get [oioioioioioioio} and the same with any key around the "I" key. My Windows password had an O in it ... that was real aggravating. I had to use an external keyboard for a whole week. Finally I called Tech support.

They sent a technician to my house within 72 hours of my call and replaced the entire keyboard. When the opened it up the tech discovered that one of the wires on the wireless card was dislodged and he couldn't snap it back on. The whole thing is modular an built with repair in mind, so he had to order another Wifi card and a whole new screen because the antenna is built into the screen. Just today, 3 weeks later, another tech came over with the goods and totally disassembled the laptop. It was scary. But he put Humpty Dumpty back together again and it works. I am able to stream Amazon video from the back bedroom and websites come up amazingly faster now, I was shocked at what I'd been missing.

But sorry, Alienware, you still get four stars because of all the work that was required on such an expensive hand built machine. I once heard that all the problems you'll have with a computer happen in the first year of owning it. That sage advice has paid off. They ship parts to a repair company that comes out to your house and fixes it there instead of you sending it to Dell like the old days. Make sure you at least get the full-on one year warranty because if I hadn't, Id be typing this: "Theieie Wiiiiireiiless Suiuiuiuiuckikiks" and they'd be over there wringing their alien hands together and spending my money on spaceship parts.

I will come back and update this review [done, several updates have been added below] as I have more experience with this laptop, but since there are few reviews, I thought I'd get something up quickly to help others out as they do their comparisons. More details later, for now, let's talk about gaming performance, as I suspect that's what most people will be wondering about.

Simply put, the gaming performance is excellent and beats any comparably priced machine I am aware of currently (March 2013). The dual Nvidia 650M SLI GFX cards will outperform a 670m and usually be snapping on the heels of a 675M (even beating it on occasion, though very rarely). The 675m is usually about 10-12% faster, but in some games like Skyrim, the 650M SLI combo actually wins (by a hair). Let's just say that nearly all games will run in their high/ultra settings with a few tweaks, and even the tough games will run on mid to high settings at full HD resolution. Turn down a few settings or lower the rez and almost anything will run smoothly at high frame rates. As Nvidia improves their drivers (this is still a very new config) performance should only get better.

So, in short, you get exceptional gaming performance at this price point, especially considering the 1920x1080 HD resolution (most comparably priced rigs will have lower rez displays). This is a TN display, not IPS, but it is a good TN display with excellent color, good viewing angles, and good contrast ratios. It is also bright, though the glossy screen does show reflections, the glossy finish does help with color saturation and contrast. Indoors, it will usually not be a problem. And here's a good place to say that this is a *portable* notebook, but one that will usually be tethered to A/C power for gaming. It's more of a desktop replacement than a laptop. Still, only about 6 lbs., so not bad to grab and move around. Update: Also, when on battery power, only one GFX card is available, you must be on A/C power to run in SLI mode.

It has a sleek looking case (aluminum), truly great red backlit keyboard (one of the best I've used), and red accents on the speakers (which sound pretty good for a notebook). All the basic ports, bluetooth, HDMI, USB 2.0 (1) and 3.0 (2) -however, no optical drive, that bay holds the second GFX card instead. A special DVD/Blu-Ray module can be purchased and swapped out with the second GFX card if you wish, or you can use an external optical drive which works fine and is what I do, as I already had one handy.

Gamers will nearly always be using a mouse, so the iffy touchpad (not awful, but not too good for gaming) won't be a problem for most. The keyboard is very nice and even has a numeric keypad scrunched in. Typing feel is above average. When you are not gaming, this unit makes a nice high end work rig as well (think video editing, photoshop, audio, etc.). It doesn't hurt that you've got an exceptionally fast CPU and a bunch of RAM stuffed into this thing, either. Benchmarks are great.

The 5400 rpm hard drive gives many pause, but it is a good quality Samsung drive with an SSD cache and, really, it works pretty well and is faster than I expected. In normal use, I hardly even notice any lag compared to my SSD rig. No, it's not as fast all the time, but it's perfectly fine and not something that bothers me at all. Not yet anyway. For gaming, I doubt it will be an issue. The new windows 8 secure boot BIOS make it harder to swap out for an SSD (though it can be done, it's not trivial), so this may still be a consideration for some. I'm happy to leave the HDD in place, myself.

Great gaming and media performance, great performance overall, really. Nice Full HD screen, Good speakers, Plenty of storage and memory, plus good, solid build quality make this an attractive choice and an excellent value.

Update: Five weeks in and I remain very happy with this rig.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Some notes that I think might be useful to those considering the Y500:

- On CPU performance, the Y500 beats many more expensive gaming rigs thanks to the newer Core i7-3630QM 2.40 Ghz quad-core processor capable of running 8 threads, and equally important, capable of single-thread burst modes up to 3.4 Ghz.

- Not all games support SLI GFX, some will run only with a single card. Even then performance is pretty good as the 650M used runs at a slightly higher clock speed than usual and Lenovo has used the faster DDR5 RAM and plenty of it, so even a single card has strong mid-range performance. Luckily, almost all newer games *do* support SLI mode.

- I have posted an image (gallery "user" images at top left of product page)showing some benchmark results for Skyrim where the 650M SLI tops a 675M in med and high settings and ties it on ultra (full HD) settings. See notes on image for more info.

-There are tweaks you can apply to make Windows 8 look and act more like Windows 7, if that is your preference. I see no need to install Win 7, though I do prefer it, being more used to it. Gonna have to accept Windows 8 sooner or later. ;)

-Most often noted "cons" by others, battery life of only 3-4 hours, not an issue if you're plugged in most of the time (as I am). Hard drive at 5400 rpm not as bad as many make out. It's a good performing drive even at 5400 and you get less noise and heat. The SSD cache works well. Having 1 TB of storage is good for gamers, too, given the size of newer games and media (music, videos, photos, etc.). No DisplayPort if that matters to you. Not an IPS display, but a pretty decent TN panel. Some have complained about the exhaust ports, not an issue for me, but could be for some depending on how you use and position your notebook.

I wanted so so much to love this computer. Its specs are unbelievable for the price, and the ultrabay and backlit keyboard are major bonuses. It has a great array of ports (side note: the product description says it's got 2xUSB2.0 and 2xUSB3.0 this is incorrect. It has only one USB2.0 port on the right side), and the screen is simply beautiful.

I knew ahead of time that the trackpad and the keyboard might leave something to be desired, but I was not prepared for the degree to which this affected my ability to use the computer. The trackpad is just...straight up aggravating. There is a clear lack of spit and polish with the user friendliness of the keyboard/trackpad.

Let's take the trackpad -

Good:

*Nice texture

*Synaptics, so at least theoretically a good piece of hardware

*Two finger scroll

Bad:

*This is a circular problem. There is no physical button you have to push down the trackpad; if you want to *click* the trackpad, you have to put just a few more pounds of pressure down on it than seems reasonable, and the computer seems to agree, as doing this appears to actually depress the entire pad into the body of the laptop by a few mm and sometimes make a disconcerting creaky noise; since you don't want to have to try to click the pad, you want to tap it, and here is where software fights you right and left for control of the computer. Granted I have my mouse sensitivity set very high, but it has been really frustrating to tap or double tap on things and find that for whatever reason the mouse has moved in some direction during that action. Unavoidably, there will be times where you HAVE to click and hold something while you drag it around or resize a window or something, and this is next impossible without turning on the click lock feature buried in the mouse settings, which you will then have to flip on and off every time you plug in a mouse, which you will DEFINITELY be doing because it's the only way to make mouse interface with this computer in any way a pleasant experience. It's enough to make me say that it's a shame this computer didn't come with a touchscreen so I could just avoid the trackpad for clicking things, which should say something.

*Even the fastest tracking speed seems a little sluggish to me. This may be a Windows problem and not a Synaptics problem, but I thought I'd mention it.

*Major smudgefest. Doesn't bother me all that much, but it sure doesn't do much to preserve the sleek look of the machine.

Now the keyboard-

Good:

*Backlighting is GREAT. I LOVE having a backlit keyboard, and having a couple brightness options is pretty handy too.

*Good solid keyboard. It feels great to type on. Not mushy or wiggly. For a laptop, I think this is a totally acceptable keyboard.

*Number pad! Hooray!

Bad:

*I don't know who the hell patented what that causes Windows PC's to hide all their most helpful function buttons BEHIND the function keys, but it's stupidly frustrating. Basic things like brightness, volume, keyboard backlight, and all the fun little additions lenovo gives you for quick access to search functions or program switching or whatever they're all spread out in, I guess, contextual places on the keyboard. That's great except /why aren't they on TOP of the function keeeeeeyyys/?! Who uses those flim flammin keys so frequently that they take precedent over these basic, extremely important things? Why do I need two hands to turn down the volume. Also,

*WHY IS THERE NO MUTE KEY?

*The right shift is fun sized. Since my last keyboard lost it's left shift to someone spilling water on it, this is very hard for me to work with. Not a deal breaker, but again, a needless minor annoyance.

Maybe all these things are significant to me because while I am a gamer, I am also a person who likes to browse the internet and get other stuff done, and these sorts of basic UI problems significantly impede my enjoyment of this computer. Basically, I *need* a computer for all sorts of communication reasons, and these sorts of things can be done very easily and very well by a huge variety of computers. I have a 2006 Macbook Pro that fills my computer *needs* really well. It sends emails and skypes and clicks the stuff I intend it to click and even scrolls down in the direction that feels natural to me, which is all I ask of any computer. I also have computer *wants* i.e. I *want* a computer that I can play Skyrim, and Tribes:Ascend, and Starcraft 2 on, and I presently have a Y500 that yawns in the face of these challenges. I was really hoping that it would cover my *needs* as well, but it falls flat on its face in that department, so I can't really justify the combined 15 or so lbs of computer it now takes to cover all my bases here can I? And which do you think is still under a return policy? *Sigh*

EDIT: I forgot to mention, that I had a few technical problems with the SLI cards. I installed and played enough games from my Steam and Humble Bundle accounts to fill up about 65% of the hdd, which, since it's a terabyte, I believe is impressive. Several of the games had some very strange, very quirky problems that are hard to describe. Weird stuff like not scaling text properly at some resolutions, or not behaving normally unless run in a windowed mode. Some games refused to work at all, and one even refused to explain itself it simply closed without comment every time I tried to run it. I also had some graphical issues outside of games, specifically while using Chrome. At least two dozen times during the month I owned this computer, the screen would randomly black out, then pop back on at full brightness (not awesome in a dark bedroom watching TV) reporting that the graphics card had crashed and had been recovered, followed by Chrome locking up and needing to be force closed and reopened. These are all likely driver related issues that Nvidia will likely (hopefully) hammer out in the future, but it's worth knowing if you're thinking of buying this computer.

Best Deals for Lenovo IdeaPad Y500 15.6-Inch Laptop (Metal - Dusk Black)

I purchased this laptop for work purposes (Video Editing, etc.) and so far it has exceeded my expectations in many ways!

The graphics capability is phenomenal, the speakers sound great and the laptop itself feels well-made and solid, but just light enough to make it easy to carry around for in-the-field editing. The screen is bright and looks great! The keyboard is comfortable and feels nice when doing a fair amount of typing.

The only problem I've had is the mouse pad. It's a little hyper-sensitive at first and it's hard to find a good setting that makes it easy to use. However, this is easily fixed with a wireless mouse and the multi-touch functions are very useful!

I don't know what everybody's issue with Windows 8 is, it just takes a little bit to get used to it. If you don't like it, just install Win 7, it's not that hard to come by.

And well, it just looks cool. Some people may life the flashy stuff, but this laptop just looks classy.

If you're doing anything that requires intensive video processing, buy this laptop! You won't regret it!

Honest reviews on Lenovo IdeaPad Y500 15.6-Inch Laptop (Metal - Dusk Black)

First off, for the price, this laptop is great. SLI, backlit keyboard, 16gb of ram, and 1tb of hd space are all the great features in this laptop. The screen is beautiful at 1920x1080 and pc gaming is amazing with the screen and gpu. Other complaints on here state the lack of optical drive or a crappy touchpad, the touchpad does sound rather cheap but works fine. I use a mouse so I don't use the touchpad very often. The lack of optical drive is understandable because its replaced with an extra gpu. The ultrabay allows you to switch between an extra gpu, a fan, another hdd, or an optical drive. Windows 8 gets some getting used to. After a week it feels natural and with the installment of software like pokki or startisback, this gives you a start button and the option to boot straight into desktop mode, bypassing the metro UI completely. I thought the 32gb ssd was for the operating system for fast boot times, but its just for cache. Not that this laptop needs an ssd for a faster boot, I still get 8 second start ups everytime. If you are looking for a computer similar to this but with a bluray drive and 3d, check out the toshiba qosmio, similar price but bulkier. Gaming on this is a breeze, and with a 3d monitor, games and movies look amazing. Every game so far has had optimal settings for ultra high, crysis 3, metro:last light, and tomb raider are some examples of games that play without stutter. The JBL speakers are some of the best laptop speakers I have ever heard, sound is clear and crisp. I feel as if this computer is lacking some ports, I thought I would have had more than 3 usb ports. I ordered the toshiba dynadock to compensate that though, it gives me 6 usb 3.0 ports 2 video cards for extra displays, 5.1 surround sound, and extra usb 2.0 ports for the hell of it. This computer has some nice features like a 1-button back up system, energy management tools and dust removal program that puts fans on high and pushes out dust from inside. Don't have many complaints about the laptop, except maybe the battery life, but with the amount hardware the bad boy is powering, its expected.

This computer is amazing dont get me wrong but it broke 6 months in due to a hard drive malfunction and when i called the "Lenovo #" on google they said the warranty would cover anything, blah blah blah. Aparently i was calling "MyTech Help Repair". When we finally got things sorted out and called Lenovo they were amazingly helpful. Best costumer service ive ever had. NEVER GO THROUGH MY TECH HELP REPAIR for repairs.

But overall this is a great computer that i would buy again.

I did not give it 5 stars because I think it is a little slow for a brand new computer. I do not like Windows8. but the computer itself is nice, sleek, and shiny. It is very light weight.

DVD player makes a lot of noise ... unless you hold it. I do love the big screen.

I hate Windows 8 ... maybe thats just my bias towards what I am used to. But having to find a separate pane to close out of an existing window sems stupid to me. Worse, that pane that should open up at the top of IE when you move the cursor to the very top often times won't show up. Not sure if this is Windows bug of my failure to uderstand how it should work.

I bought this for a work at home customer service job. It could have been a great computer, but there is something wrong with they keyboard. When I am typing the letters are jumping all over the place, and some of the words when I type them are being erased as I type them. I have never had this happen with a laptop. I surely cannot use this and type in customer accounts and type reports like this. It is going to slow down productivity because I have to constantly go back and correct words that get messed up.

It took me a long time to decide which laptop to buy, I probably looked at more than a hundred models by different companies, around this price range of 500-700$, but finally, about 3 months ago, I decided to buy this one, after many people who own Asus laptops told me that they are simply great. What can I say, they were right. This laptop is everything I expected and more. Truly lightning fast, everything works fluently. The battery is amazing, lasts for around 7 hours. The screen is crispy clear and vibrant with colors, watching movies on it is awesome. The keyboard is great and there is also a very comfortable pad for the hands, I guess that's one of the pros of buying a 15 inch screen. The only con I can find is that it's a pretty large (not heavy though) piece to put inside a bag if you're a student like I am and want to take it with you. Anyway, this one rocks, go for it.

I spent a lot of time researching my next laptop PC purchase. I was predisposed to ASUS, but looking at other brands too. I found this model because it best fit my requirements. I could not find any info or customer reviews. I wanted a PC with an i5 quad-core processor, with more than 4GB RAM, with more than 500GB HDD, with a large screen, and with a DVD/CD drive, plus all of the expected ports. This is what I found, and even in the absence of specific reviews and info, ultimately I took the plunge based on the general reputation of ASUS ...

* As with everything I purchase from Amazon (Prime), it arrived when expected and sufficiently packaged

* OOB experience was simple and perfect

* Powered-up, and ran great from the start

* My previous PC is a 7 year-old Celeron based unit ... WOW what a difference a quad-core i5 CPU with 8GB RAM makes

* Add the 8 GB of RAM, even though a portion is shared for video RAM, and the system is very fast and responsive

* The HDD is quite large and fast enough for Office Apps and Web Apps and Web browsing

* Though one downside (not an knock against ASUS) is the large amount of HDD space consumed by preloaded MS Office 2010; though I suppose it was advantageous to have that since I did purchase a copy of MS Office

* Build quality is quite good; screen is excellent; keyboard & trackpad are all more than adequate

* Finally I have a PC with sleep and wakeup that not only work consistently & reliably, but FAST too!

* I haven't fully tested the batteries, however it does seem battery life tracks what is spec'd

* Size & Weight ... I wanted a large screen, and the unit is therefore wide (again, my choice); however what is impressive is how thin and light it is

* It also runs cool ... I have never felt any heat

* It also runs very quiet, even if it has to use its fan

Summary -

I am thoroughly pleased with this PC and its performance and price point. If the specs for this laptop PC meet your requirements, it's a great choice.

I was previously a diehard Dell owner (something about which I am now ashamed). This product arrived on time and shipped quickly. It was packaged pretty well. The laptop looks expensive, but was probably the least expensive one I've owned...and it works better than my previous $2,300 laptop. It never crashes, never freezes, never erases my files, etc. The hardware works fine. It's very versatile software-wise. I highly recommend it.

Honest reviews on ASUS U56E-EBL8 Laptop

I bought this laptop 9 months ago for school and I am pleased. The one knock I have is the extremely annoying ASUS firmware... Updates that never work, downloads that don't work, etc. as for performance and battery life I am very pleased. ASUS claims 10 hours of battery life..... Well if you run on power mode and only type then possibly.... However, for average computing you're looking at 5.5-6 hours of battery life tops. Not a bad laptop at all, but for the same price range, I'd go Fujitsu Lifebook if I had the choice again.

Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for ASUS U56E-EBL8 Laptop

I ran into similar problems as another reviewer my hard drive completely failed 1 1/2 weeks after the warranty ended (I think they design products this way, I swear). I took the hard drive out and attempted to access it via an external enclosure on my desktop, and it won't even recognize it. I ordered and installed a new hard drive thinking I could reinstall Windows and cut my losses. Go back to original package...and no windows disk. But how could that be? I called them up and got this gem of a response: "Did you create a backup recovery disk when you received your laptop?" Me: "No" Them: "Well, you had the opportunity to create as many backup disks as you wanted so it's not our fault if you didn't do that."

They then directed me to asus product page where I can order one for the tidy sum of $50.

$50!? You can get a blank DVD for a buck. It's highway robbery. I can get an entirely new copy of windows 8 for $20 more.

Anyway, I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 because it was a nice computer before it crashed.

Pros:

Battery Life

Mousepad love the two finger swipe, pinch in/out like a Mac

Speed Boots up quickly, around 15-20 seconds

Cons:

Speakers are worthless. I mean totally worthless. Full volume 2 feet away on the table in a quiet room and you can't hear a thing. God forbid you have a fan running in the background

..and speaking of fans, the one in the laptop gets a little loud sometimes...making it even harder to hear the speakers

It is sleek, clean with a very nice finishing using aluminum and some kind of rubber feeling for the bottom. For me it's more than enough.

I really like it. better than the big 15.6 screen. You just need to buy an external DVD drive (in case you need it).

Macbook Air copy or not, this is a really nice laptop. I picked one up for a bit more than Amazon sells it but I don't regret it one bit.

The i5 processor can handle anything I can think to throw at it. It's super silent, no useless optical drive taking up space, etc Very modern, simple and affordable. Great job HP.

I am typing this on the model I am reviewing. I just got it today but my first impression is that Windows 8 is very bad... Not Toshiba's fault on the user interface. As far as the hardware everything looked decent and the laptop is light for its size and the screen is nice and bright at the store display. Nice keyboard feel but the track pad isn't great feeling because its textured and the track pad buttons are hard pressing. multiple clicks will hurt your fingers. The biggest disappointment are the speakers. These are the worst speakers available on a laptop. They sound like internal speakers from an old desktop PC. My iphone has better sound from its speaker. You definitely need headphones otherwise the hollow noise form the speakers is annoying. I wish I bought a higher spec Windows 7 laptop.

It's ok. The keyboard feels kinda cheaply made. It's light and easy to carry. Price was decent for this product.

As I sit here writing this review, I am using the THIRD Toshiba laptop I have had to go back to get..the first one was this model, and the Wi-Fi just quit. Just stopped. nothing would make it start up again. It would only connect to the internet with a cabled connection. For a 400$ laptop, that is just unacceptable. Luckily, I had bought it at Office Depot, and they exchanged it without a problem ( it was 12 days old). I brought the second one home, and used it, loaded all the "stuff" I needed on it (not a small job) and it worked fine...for about 2.5 weeks. On start up, about 3 times out of 5, it would refuse to load web pages. The toolbar showed it was hooked into the network, and no troubleshooting program showed a problem. I restarted the unit, and it then worked. This started to happen a lot, so I tried hooking in a network cable, and sure enough, it worked fine...another bad wi-fi unit. I then traded up to the next better Toshiba ( i3 intel, 6 GB), hopefully it has a better wi-fi unit, and/or a better management program for it.

I guess we'll see.

I am very disappointed, Toshiba!

Speakers: garbage

Keyboard: garbage

Processor: mediocre

After a few months, the computer now really bogs down when starting up. I guess you pay for what you get.

It slid off my bed awhile back and now the sound doesn't work at all, either speakers or headphones.

I ordered this PC for my consulting business in which I do everything from Software Development to Web Design. I've had it for about a week or so in which I typically have open multiple Micrsoft .NET IDE's, Adobe programs, web browsers, emails, etc. It's pretty rare for the CPU usage to get above 15%. With a quad core this this thing is an animal and it shows. Really good graphics for this price the display is crisp and sharp. I use Adobe Fireworks and Dreamweaver for design work and the display is right up there with higher-end video cards. Fit & finish is superb as it is on all EliteBooks I've had. The only negative I'd say is this is a heavy laptop. This is a workstation built for heavy lifting so I kind of expected it would be on the heavier side. As of now 5 stars.

I ordered this laptop after much review. Here's what I think:

Ordered on a Tuesday morning (2/5), and as a prime member, paid the $3.99 for overnight shipping. Had it at my door by 2pm on Wednesday afternoon. Came well packaged and with all items available.

Laptop itself is incredible. The casing is a brushed aluminum that was quite darker than I was expecting it to be. Fingerprints aren't too much of a problem, but you will see the oils from your skin streak on the darker metal. The keyboard is excellent and the red backlit keyboard really sets it off. The display is crisp at 1080p and very bright, albeit a bit glossy, but I've had no noticeable problems with glare. My only real issue is with the trackpad and the webcam. As you've probably read on forums the trackpad is a bit inconsistent, which could be a real issue for some wanting to use the multitouch features in windows 8. As a gamer, I rarely use it as I always keep a wireless mouse with me. The webcam is also a bit on the disappointing side. While it is completely functional, it's rather grainy and doesn't work well in low light without ghosting.

Now on to the meat and potatoes. Dual nvidia gt650m's. The visuals pumped out by these are absolutely boner-inducing. Getting a solid 60fps in CoD:Black Ops 2 at high/ultra settings. Skyrim runs flawlessly in ultra settings as well. With the hi-def display, I had to remind buddies who tested it out to put their tongues back in their mouths. League of Legends runs at a consistent 80-100fps, It's absolutely a mind blowingly incredible machine for gaming, and for hundreds of dollars less than comparable Alienware's.

I am absolutely thrilled with this purchase. If you're looking for an extreme gaming laptop for a moderate budget, I really don't think you can beat this laptop. i7, Dual SLI video cards, 1080p display, 8gbs of ram (got my 16gb to max out the board on its way now), backlit keyboard, and an amazing fit and finish. You really can't go wrong with this one!

I've had this laptop for a few weeks now, and so far, I'm really enjoying my decision to buy the Y500. I wanted to buy a replacement for my Acer Extensa 4630Z from 2009, but I didn't want just another underpowered, under $300 laptop. That's what tablets are for nowadays. I wanted something that I could use for both work, and play when time allows.

I was looking for a few months, and finally narrowed my options down to the Lenovo IdeaPad Y580 and the Lenovo IdeaPad Y500. I wanted a somewhat future-proof laptop, but without the out of this world price. I figured around $1,000 would be the most I would spend, and I stayed very close to my budget.

Most of the other laptops that I liked were starting around $1,200, and they had fewer features that the two IdeaPad models above. Both models have above mid-range graphics cards, Full HD displays, usb 3.0, HDMI out, back lit keyboards, and the quad core Intel core i7. The main differences between the two IdeaPad models were the optical drive, and the SLI dual graphics card setup.

Also, if $1,000 is a little steep, there are versions of both the Lenovo IdeaPad Y500 and the Y580 that are closer to $800 or $900. There are constantly discounts available out there.

I decided to go with the Y500 for a few reasons.

1. The SLI dual graphics card setup. After a lot of research, I found that the GT 650 and the GTX 660 were very similar. The GT 650 SLI does have a tendency to slightly outperform the single GTX 660, depending on the drivers and the application you are running.

2. The price was slightly lower than the comparable Y580 at the time I made my purchase.

3. The black and red back lit keyboard looked great in the photos, and it looks even better in person.

Pros:

*The Full HD 1080p display is amazing. My last laptop had a resolution of 1366x768, so I'm a happy camper.

*The JBL speakers pack a pretty nice punch for a laptop. They won't be better than a dedicated sound system, or even a high end set of headphones, but they pretty loud without any distortion.

*SLI graphics. Most games can be run on Ultra. I've tried running Battlefield 3, and you can pull off Ultra if you aren't playing on full screen resolution.

*Battery life. For me, I can get about 4 hours of battery life, and would probably get even more if I use the power saver mode. For those that don't stay close to a power outlet, 4 hours won't be enough, but it's plenty for me. My old Acer can go for at most 2 hours, and that is the second battery for the old workhorse.

*The keyboard is very usuable. There's plenty of space between the keys, and there's just enough depth to each key stroke. I also love the red back light for the keyboard.

*HD camera. This is great for video chat, and it performs surprisingly well in low light conditions. It's not the best camera ever, but it is far better than what was built-in on my Acer from '09.

Cons:

*The trackpad isn't the best I've ever used, but it's not as bad as the other reviews claim. I have a synaptics trackpad, so maybe I got lucky. However, if you are gaming on this laptop, odds are that you'll have a mouse, so to each their own.

*No optical drive. With the Ultrabay, there might be an optical drive that can be added in place of the second graphics card, but I have yet to find one. Granted, I almost never use any optical drives on computers these days, but I'd still like to have one built-in for convenience. If I absolutely needed an optical drive (DVD or BluRay), then I would have chosen the Y580 hands down.

*Pre-installed software, as with any PC, is alive and well when you first boot up the Lenovo Y500. Thankfully, there's not too much bloatware, but why is there a DVD program on here when I don't have an optical drive to speak of? At least make sure all of the bloatware is somewhat relevant.

*Fingerprints. I read in one review that fingerprints were all over the laptop after a short amount of use, but I didn't think much of it at the time. Well, that person was right! I would like to think that I take great care of my things, but this laptop attracts smudges and fingerprints like nothing I've ever used before.

*(edit) This version does not have a solid state drive. Boot times are very fast as it is, but the more expensive version does have the faster drive included.

Other:

*Be sure to update the Nvidia drivers as soon as possible if you do decide to purchase this laptop. The drivers that shipped are from October 2012, and there have been many fixes since then. This will improve performance, so definitely try it out.

*Windows 8 is pre-installed on this laptop. Not everyone likes the latest OS from Microsoft, but don't knock it before you try it.

Yes, the start menu is a little wierd. Yes, the gestures are different. And yes, this OS was designed primarily for touch based devices (hint: this laptop does not have a touchscreen). If the Metro UI is that cumbersome, there are ways to avoid using it all together, but I have grown to appreciate it.

If you are able to find an Ultrabay DVD or BluRay drive that will fit this laptop, please let me know!

Best Deals for Lenovo IdeaPad Y500 15.6-Inch Laptop (Metal - Dusk Black)

Everything is top-notch on this SLI model. Only bottleneck is the sluggish hard drive, but that'll get replaced soon.

Couple of issues:

* WiDi does not work because the Intel HD4000 is not functional (In all models)

* Nvidia Optimus cannot function without the Intel HD400 so battery life suffers.

* Ships with mediocre WiFi card (No Dual Band, Caps at 30 Mbps)

* Lenovo has a whitelist embedded into the BIOSIn other words, you can't replace certain components with just anything, but you have to get Lenovo approved hardware (Which they charge a premium for.) Very bad marketing, but it can solved by unlocking the BIOS.

* I have the Synaptics touchpad which solves the jittery sensitivity on older production models. However, the touchpad is still awful in quality. Feels very cheap because when clicking, the surface depresses very far into the chassis.

* Finger Print Magnet

Pros:

* After updating the drivers, SLI runs just about anything I can throw at it.

* Sturdy materials, feels solid.

* Illuminated red keyboard is a head-turner.

* JBL Speakers are the best I've ever heard in a laptop, it's ridiculously good.

* Dolby V4, once tweaked, provides clear surround soundClarity is outstanding on my Bose

Overall, for the price tag, this machine can't be beat. It has its flaws but not anything I'd return it over for; Not everything is perfect.

Honest reviews on Lenovo IdeaPad Y500 15.6-Inch Laptop (Metal - Dusk Black)

I received this laptop today at around noon and I have already fallen in love with it

Casing: The inside of the laptop is a black/dark brown brushed aluminum which is cool to the touch and looks fantastic. There is also the keyboard in the middle which is backlit. The red backlit keybaord on this laptop makes it looks absoultely beautiful. The lid is also made of the same brushed aluminum that is found on the inside. On the underside and sides of the laptop however, there is plastic. Lenovo did manage somehow to make this plastic look really nice. They textured it to look like brushed aluminum.

Preformance: This laptop is blisteringly fast. The only thing that is slowing it down is the 5400 RPM Hard drive but I removed that and installed a hybrid ssd drive from seagate. The dual grapgics makes this computer even than ever. You can play most games on high setting without any sign of a problem.

A few notes:

1. Although it does weigh 6.4 pounds, it certainly does not feel like it. You can carry it around under your arm or even in a backpack without a problem

2. THIS DOES NOT COME WITH A CD/DVD DRIVE. Although it does say "integrated Cd/Dvd drive" in the description, it isn't on here. You will find the nvidia gt650M graphics card in there.

3. I personally like the trackpad despite all the negative things. Agreed, it does have a few flaws but after using it for a couple of hours, I have gotten used to it.

4. The power brick is huge! I would suggest that you buy an ASUS slim adapter for the ASUS N56 beucase it is much smaller and works just as well

5. The speakers on this laptop are amazing! They get pretty loud.

6. Lastly, the bezel around the screen at the top is a little big. It is a minor annoyance for me, but it may not be for you.

If you have any more questions about this laptop, please comment on my reivew. I will definitely reply within the day.

We were given a budget to buy our own work machines and we picked this one and opted for the dual graphics cards. I use a lot of graphics software and also wanted something that wouldn't crap itself during a massive database query.

I put an SSD in this thing as soon as I got it and it would not recognize the backup it had created so opted to purchase a Windows 8 Pro disk to restore it (it comes with home edition). No biggie, needed to upgrade anyhow but if you are making flash drive backups make sure they work before reformatting. You can do this by going into recovery and observing if it sees the flash drive. Because of this I have no idea how the original software on the thing added/subtracted to it's performance. What is available to download on the website is limited.

Pros;

It's a nice looking computer, get lots of comments.

Keyboard is wicked cool looking.

It was very fast with the original drive but with the SSD it is instant everything.

Haven't crashed it running Microsoft products.

Runs all of my Steam games on high.

Doesn't get that hot.

Has a full number pad though it is a bit squished.

I find it lightweight for what it is.

Cons;

Stupid $@$%@#!! trackpad. I swear I have never been so aggravated by any piece of equipment in my life. Get your wrist or finger anywhere near it and it has a tendency to delete whatever you just typed.

It feels flimsy compared to the solid body macbooks, it makes me nervous setting it down wrong as you can feel it flex if you are gripping it in one hand.

It definitely collects fingerprints.

This is really a five star machine, it performs flawlessly. I just can't give it the full five with that track pad having cost me hours of retyping time in only two months. I have it docked 90% of the time otherwise I would have seriously considered returning it. As a laptop that one would travel with you can not get around the urge to rest your wrists on it and I haven't yet found a fast way to turn the trackpad off when a mouse is connected.

Horrible experience! Buyers beware. Toshiba Laptop was purchased in August for son at college. Never able to open Windows 365. Toshiba referred us to to a company, Teqkey. Teqkey charged us $100 for one-time diagnostics after which they said Windows 365 is corrupt, needs to be restarted but need software key. Key not provided to us by (we thought) Amazon.

Amazon points to a company, Two Cougars. Amazon rep explained that TC is basically the company from which we are purchasing the laptop. Five (5) messages later we are still trying to explain what we need. Nice looking Laptop . If only it was usable. Oh! And if we want to return it? Product must go to Toshiba.

I was disappointed that this laptop didn't work. We kept getting messages that it needed a driver but when we tried to download we couldn't. I had another old Dell laptop that lasted me about 7 years and it was already at least 10 years when it was handed down to me. It didn't have all the bells and whistles of the new models but it was sturdy & dependable. So when my son needed something just to stay in touch with the world (he lives in the middle of no where, literally) I shipped it to him and it worked great for him. But I guess the old machine finally gave out. I just should have bought him a new computer instead of taking my chances with an old refurbished machine. But if you can get an old Dell that's still in good working order you've got yourself a bargain. I heard they aren't making Dell anymore & that's too bad 'cause they're great products. BTW Amazon and the seller are awesome. They really gave me first rate treatment & no hassles about returning it.

This is great budget gaming laptop as the reviewer before me mentioned For the money it can't be beat I got mine off of Ebayy for $389 Although the laptop states it may only support 8GB I think it can do 16GB, but do not know for sure -

For $32 I put in a Blu Ray Drive and had a spare Seagate Momentus XT 500GB (with 4GB Flash and 7200rpm, super fast). Honestly, really good looking laptop I have it connected to Samsung 24" LED The only con is it has just 3 USB ports but HDMI is very cool along with the ESATA Port Really love it and it' great looking!

I game on WIFI and it is very capable on COD MW3go get one!

Updated*** Well, about 2 weeks ago I just upgraded the memory to 16GB on this thing I am wondering if down the road, whether or not the system can do 32GB anyway, just a great laptop someone did ask me regarding the blu ray upgrade I did my homework and found a samsung blu ray drive on ebayy, but I did tell them that you need blu ray software like power DVD 12 or something like that Power DVD is what I use it's worth $20 or $30 bucks I spent on it This laptop is pretty much like a little beastie now! 16GB Ram ($65), 500GB Seagate Momentus XT Drive with 4 gig Nand SSD and 7200rpm (I had this HD drive for about 2 years lying around cost about $70 my Dell now boots up in under 22 secs) + Samsung BluRay ($32) wow and installed win 7 pro 64bit (no cost my version) it's like a $1700 laptop The Used Mac equivlant is about $1700 except no blu-ray... and of course Paid $389 off of ebayy that includes shipping!!! tada....... by the way the NVidia Card is very close to a AMD/ATI HD67xx series cards a while back ago I had an HP with a HD6750 great card The GT525M just as good if not better Handles all my games and the supports 1080p out through HDMI Love it!!!

I had to completely disassemble the laptop just to get to the hard Drive to swap it with a SSD. The Hard Drive was buried under the motherboard. The internal design is awful! Whats worse, I damaged the keyboard trying to take this laptop apart. Then later after putting it back together I realized Dell didn't send a Windows 7 restore disk with the laptop. I will never buy a Dell laptop again! I would not recommend this laptop to anyone who would want to upgrade it in the future.

Good presentation, It came in its box with all the protection.

I haven't used it for work yet, just for watch movies and internet and this is what I have found so far..

I have to clean up the surface regularly because all the grease from my hands remains on it

Once time I turned it on and it showed some kind of win7 safe mode screen, it said something like a file was missing.. I just rebooted and it did not showed it again so far..

I use bsplayer to watch movies with subtitles files and from time to time the software crashes..

I found the speed of transfer data from the dvd unit or from a usb unit, a little slow.. perhaps its just an impression but I bothers me.

I think these problems are related with the OS and perhaps if I make a clean new install, or just use another OS these details would disappear.

One more thing: When I am in a very quiet room I can hear the reading/writing sound from the HD, its not a problem for me though.

I gave it 4 stars because I think its a good machine but perhaps win7 its not so stable on it..
