HISTORY: I originally had a Compaq laptop that was 15.6 inches I think? It was a couple inches thick and made my school bag heavy. The ad for it said Bluetooth and webcam, but the laptop actually had neither. When the MacBook Air came out in 11.6 inches and Apple's ad said it could do iCloud synchronization, I gave my Compaq to my little brother and got the MacBook 11. As it turns out, the next class I was registered for at school (I take online college classes and work full time) required a computer with "Windows environment". SO... I needed a Windows laptop again.
I researched 11.6 inch laptops for about 2 weeks and learned that the Asus Zenbook UX21A (I think the K series?) had all the specs I wanted, but no-one in America sold the K-series. Best Buy sold the UX21A with 250 GB of flash drive, improved backlit keyboard and improved trackpad response, i7 processor, and Windows 8 (which I found really frustrating to use within the first hour I tried it) for about $2000. Amazon advertised the UX21E with 128 GB of flash drive, non-backlit keyboard, the original trackpad, i5 processor, and Windows 7 (which was easy for me to learn and already familiar) for $748. After learning that I only used about 70 GB of hard drive on my Compaq, I decided on the UX21E.
THE RESULTS:
May 25, 2013 I ordedred the UX21-ESL4 from Amazom. The estimated delivery date was June 3 June 18, 2013. It arrived May 31, only one day after my class began. The first day was for introductions, so I slid past ok just using my MacBook. Since then, I've only had a few minor issues arise using the Zenbook.
1) The settings on the WiFi would turn on when you told it to connect, but then drop every so many minutes. This was really nerve-wrecking when it happened a couple days before my first test. I had typed up an essay in-class and the WiFi dropped taking Blackboard and my essay with it. Luckily, I had copied and pasted the essay into MS Word and was able to re-paste in Blackboard once I got back in. The fix? I took the laptop to work and a co-worker hit a button and now the WiFi stays on.
2) The software on the UX21E are a bit more up to date than my Compaq... About 2 or 3 years more up to date. For whatever reason, Blackboard does not recognize/accept Ctrl-V from my Zenbook (even though it did from my Compaq). The fix? I use right-click + "Paste" when the teacher requires us to copy and paste things.
3) The security settings are awesome. Windows has a firewall. The UX21E has IE10 (not IE9, yay!) and it has a firewall. IE10's firewall would not let me stream Pandora at all and I use Pandora to get in the groove when I'm studying. The fix? I took my laptop back to work where the original guy and his 2 team mates fiddled with the security settings. I think they added Pandora to the accepted websites on the Security tab.
This part I just thought it needed saying for those wondering how I conveniently completed my little school kit. There aren't many bags out there that are as short as the Zenbook 11 is wide. I'd rather my laptop NOT get bounced around in a bookbag that's too big for it and not be left in a laptop messenger bag which any thief can recognize. I've found only 2 sellers that make a real backpack in the proper size. Toppu sells a faux-learher laptop bag that's classy and designed for technology this size. KGHP & Jaimall sell it for about $70 I think. It's advertised here on Amazon in mint color, but I think they're able to restock in brown and black. By the time I found out (yesterday) I'd already bought the SwissGear Dashpack for $25. Perfect fit for the laptop and my books. If you want your cords and thumb drives to stay nice, neat, and put away, also try the Mead Five Star XPanz zipper pouch. It holds the Zenbook's power cord, my Case Logic ER303 mouse, my Skullcandy earbuds, my thumb drive, my iPhone 5 USB cord, and my 6ft extension cord perfectly. I topped it all off with a Novotel MHS 890 WiFi hotspot purchased from Verizon. I can do my homework virtually anywhere now.
This was a trial and error lesson on laptop purchasing, but having a lightweight office in my backpack is very rewarding and comforting. When you're as active and small as I am, you really do better with tools that "fit" you properly. Try the Zenbook UX21E if you're looking for portability and convenience. Go easy on the keyboard ;-) and you won't go wrong.i was surprised. the only other thing i don't like about this ultrabook is that at least the chrome browser seems to lag when i scroll through pages; i didn't have that on my 4-yr-old desktop for some reason. otherwise it's pretty solid.

eMachines Black 15-inch eME725-4520 Laptop Reviews
I bought this laptop after previously owning an expensive, Sony Vaio which had a lot of features that I didn't use.
That fell and broke and I found the cost of replacement parts to be excessive, so instead, I decided to purchase a more cost effective system.
I am more that pleased with this purchase. It is stable and efficient as Acer bought the eMachines brand. So I wasn't worried about this laptop being durable as that's what Acer laptops are known for.
The 2.2 Ghz Intel Pentium T4400 processor is an upgrade over the T3200 I had on the Vaio and the increase in processing speeds is noted and appreciated. Windows 7 is a joy to use and I love it compared to Vista. Everything is so EASY on Win7.
3GB of RAM feels like the 4GB I had on the Vaio, so when I finally do upgrade this eMachine to 4GB this system is gonna FLY!
I don't use the webcam or mic alot, so I am glad I didn't have pay for one. I do use the multi-card reader and the 2 usb ports don't bother me because if I do need more than 2 ports, which I don't at this time, I can just purchase a hub.
I am so happy I got this system for less than $380.00 inclusive of shipping (yes, $380 has the shipping in it).
Also, big up to the vendor, EDeals4U. My boyfriend is jealous of my laptop and wants one. So if you do get more units in stock, I'll be sure to grab one.
I am totally excited about my laptop.

ok, have only had this laptop 3 days. NO problems out of box...so far I do love the Win 7. Love the internet functions, wireless and not having all those IE boxes on the bottom task bar. This computer seems like a speed demon compared to my old laptop. Great for farming...lol. I do wish the keyboard was centered..due to the number pad, the keyboard and touchpad are off center. Need a bit of time to get used to this. Also, the keys are very dark..wish it had a back lit keyboard, glow in the dark or bright numbers on the keys. if you type at night, aaarghhh. I'm ok with letters, but the numbers are killing me. Also, the delete and insert keys are in odd place. Wide screenvery nice! No camera or microphone, which I knew about when I purchased. Everything else is as stated on the description of the product. Have not tried to hook up to TV yet, but see the connections for tv and the card reader for camera. The seller does not provide tracking info which upset me at first. I did get a notice from amazon the item shipped the very next morning after I ordered it, paid the basic rate and it did get here in the time specified...I just could not track it. So far, so good. would purchase again for the price!Best Deals for eMachines Black 15-inch eME725-4520 Laptop
I bought this laptop for my daughter for a graduation gift, she absolutely loves it. This laptop is soo much faster than one that I bought for myself 2 1/2 yrs ago (for the same price). Windows 7 home prem is way better and more user friendly than the vista home basic that I have on mine. Starting up is super fast and surfing the web is so much more fun when you don't have to wait for the pages to load up. We did have a problem with our USB port, a piece broke off inside...we contacted the vendor and was given a repair # and info and was asked to send it in for repair. Sent it on a saturday, they received it on the following tuesday and we got it back the following tuesday all fixed (we were out of the cost to send it to them $36). I have no regrets buying this laptop.Honest reviews on eMachines Black 15-inch eME725-4520 Laptop
My son is pretty smart on what he wanted for school. So we did our research for what he was looking for at a price I could afford. This eMachine sure fit the bill. My son says he absolutely loves it and loves how fast it is. He didn't want a small screen at all, so this was a good choice. He's been using it everyday for school. I'm sure it will be great through High School. I've had an eMachine in the past and was very happy so I'm sure this will be no different.Tuesday, October 14, 2014
Toshiba Satellite A665-S6086 16-Inch Laptop (Fusion X2 Finish in Review
Though I've had a netbook, this is my first laptop.
I, too, purchased it at my local yellow and black signed brick and mortar big box store.
I couldn't be happier with it.
Pros -
Excellent LED backlit display;
Full size keyboard with 10-keypad;
Very good 802.11b/g/n wireless reception;
Great speakers;
Both RGB (VGA) and HDMI video outputs;
Toshiba's support website;
X2 finish is fairly fingerprint resistant;
Battery life of 4+ hours at full brightness.
Cons -
No bluray or bluetooth, but in this price range, it's no big deal;
I've heard the built-in web-cam isn't the best;
As others have noted, the battery will not last as long as advertised, but I've been able to get over 4 hours at full brightness.
After about a month, I did a clean install of Windows 7 Professional.
Before doing so, easily found all the drivers and Toshiba software at their very good support website.
Though I still use my desktop for any gaming or heavy graphics, this laptop is great for everything mobile.
All in all, it's an excellent first laptop.
PROS:
* Fast, fast, fast, and plenty of RAM. Running multiple programs or using Firefox with a dozen tabs open at once isn't a problem; Photoshop isn't a problem; video editing is a breeze; 1080p video plays flawlessly.
* Beautiful, large, vibrant screen. Crisp and clear. Hinges are firm on the lid.
* 7200 RPM hard drive is wickedly fast.
* Speakers are excellent for a laptop, as long as you set the laptop on a flat, hard surface. There's even noticeable bass response that has to be heard to be believed.
* Keyboard is superb. Despite the laptop's overall flimsy feel, the chiclet style keys feel firm, give great feedback, and the num pad is slightly offset from the main keys, making mis-types unlikely. The keys themselves are glossy (ie, fingerprint magnets), but otherwise it's an utter delight to type on.
* Battery life rocks. 6-8 hours depending on whether or not wireless is enabled.
CONS:
* Overall build quality tends toward the flimsy. There's a lot of flex in the laptop lid, making me wonder just how easy it would be to damage the LCD. Pressing on the palm rests also reveals more flex than I'm comfortable with.
* The sucker is big and, thanks to the hefty battery, heavy. Not the best choice if you're looking for something to truck to school or work each day. (However, this isn't an issue for me because it's a desktop replacement I don't take it anywhere.)
* Under Linux, the touch-sensitive buttons at the top of the keyboard don't light up.
* Optical drive is somewhat slow when copying data from DVDs, and tends to speed up / slow down a lot when burning DVDs.
* Screen flickers randomly when running on battery power. Again, not too much of an issue for me since I use the A665 at home, but worrisome should I need to take it on the road.
Despite the flimsy feel and potential screen flicker issues, this bad boy has performed impeccably during everyday use, video editing projects, and watching 1080p video. EXCELLENT desktop replacement!

Let me start things off by saying this thing is FAST. I got it as a desktop replacement for my aging HP Media Center, which tended to give off too much heat in the summer. The A665 doesn't disappoint. In fact, it's actually faster than my HP (Core 2 Duo). And it gives off less heat. ;)PROS:

I just purchased this exact laptop at Best Buy for $300 less than listed here. So far it doesn't disappoint. Very fast. Sharp graphics on screen. I purchased this for school, and I know it will be a great computer for my use which is internet usage, online classes and document creation. I hope I am one of the lucky ones that gets advertised battery usage, as this is the feature that won me over. I like the textured surface, as it doesn't show fingerprints like some of the smooth surface laptops.Honest reviews on Toshiba Satellite A665-S6086 16-Inch Laptop (Fusion X2 Finish in
I bought this at best buy 2 weeks ago, got a good deal, 18 months to pay, no interest and had geek squad set it up and install/set up wireless router in my home. Good idea to use them, was here 2hours getting everything done and answering questions. Computer is perfect for my use, basically email, internet etc. Does not have blu ray capability, no biggie to me, never bought one to view yet. So far, this is just what I expected and I am very happy with it. I can always add software if needed.Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Toshiba Satellite A665-S6086 16-Inch Laptop (Fusion X2 Finish in
I can't get into specifics on this computer, because I am at Best Buy right now (01/10/11) and this model (Toshiba Model:A665-S6086) is going for $599.99 and all the specs are the same as this model. When I saw the price and compared it to the price here at Amazon I almost fell over. No, I do not work for Best Buy, I'm an independent accountant and work for myself so you don't have to worry about any bias in this review. Shop around. I'm going to be walking out of here in less than 10 minutes with this baby and I'll be getting it for $600 plus tax. Something for all of you to consider and I thought I would do my good deed for the day and "pay it forward." By the way, I shop Amazon all the time, mostly MP3 downloads, but I do love this site. I just wanted to point out that you don't have to empty your wallet on this model if you just shop around. Happy shopping everybody. Peace!Mike M., Kalamazoo, MI

Discount HP Pavilion DV7-2170US 17.3-Inch Entertainment Laptop
I loved the look of this machine out of the box. It's thin, with a very large screen.
Pros: Huge Screen, designer case, fast cpu(ranked in top 30 for notebooks), graphics card(ati! 1GB of gddr3 ram!), good support from hp, 2 speakers w/sub,
hd audio,hdmi out, good screen resolution(1600x900), full keyboard, 500GB Hard drive, 4GB of ram.
It can run todays computer games very well. Applications open very fast. Very good integrated mic is very sensitive and can pick up anything.
Cons: low battery life, heavy, bloatware, glossy screen and chrome touchpad.
The battery life is way to low to really consider this machine something you would use on trips or flights over 2 hours long without plug
available. I also didnt think that laptops could be heavy untill I carried this laptop around the University of Texas campus. The glossy screen
reflects everything and anything making it hard to see the screen outdoors or near a window with bright light coming through. The chrome touch pad
is not as good as a plain jane plastic touchpad in that when you drag you finger, there is a little too much resistance for my liking( a little less
friction than rubbing your finger across the bottom of a shoe, unless your fingers are free of any residue, ie oils., then its smooth).
Overall this machine is a great laptop allowing me to keep my desktop off now since I purchased it. Even though my desktop is a high end gamming rig, this laptop has essentially replaced it. That being said, there are probably those of you who will not want to lug it around where ever you go. If you do, do purchase a laptop backpack as a brief case design even with one with a strap would tear into your shoulders. The battery life is annoyingly low, but is expected from a laptop with a large screen and discrete graphics card. If you want more battery life choose a laptop that has integrated graphics, but performance will be much lower. The only laptop out there that I have seen with performance and big screen, with an 8 hour battery life is a $3000 mac! Vista is no isssue here as the machine is perfectly capable of running it flawlessly. THERE HAVE BEEN NO ERRORS OR BLUESCREENS!!!!! The user who rated this machine with 1 star messed up his machine him self. He is obviosly a novice user. You only get bluescreens on computers due to user errors 99.999% of the time. I have had no issues at all with this notebook.
I ordered 2 of these laptops for my wife and I. The laptops came packaged very good, with no defects, and were delivered the next day after the order was placed. Both screens had no dead pixels what so ever and were perfect. All extra ports(useb, hdmi, ect) do not get in the way of each other. The laptops came with the hp mini-media remote, ac adapters, user guides, and pollishing cloths. Setup is a breese with HP's setup program. Do note that HP Games from wild tangent is much like a video game arcade, where you purchase tokens to play the games. 500 tokens a month for 6.99 per month. All antivirus software and office software is a trial version. I recommend unistalling the trial versions of office, hp wild tangent games(the games are not free!!!), norton(horrible, bloated, antivirus software), and the sling box software(uselesss without a slingbox for your tv). Free antivirus programs are out there.
I am giving it only 4 out of 5 due to the battery life. Otherwise you will not be disappointed. PC PitStop is a website that benchmarks computers, it ranked my system among laptops in the top 9% in the world, graphics got the top 3%.

Great graphic imprint. The downside for the finished materials look is that this plastic is in particular too shiny and has to be cleaned constantly to avoid smudgy appearance.
Normally, I don't write a review at all, if the product really sucks my experience might be a fluke, or if it's a book I might have misunderstood the intent. But this laptop has been such an inconvenience, that a bad review seems like real justice.
The battery is too heavy & bulky. The laptop had to be sent back several times; the first time, they 'fixed' the motherboard, the third time they had to replace the motherboard. It still has problems if you try to work with only the battery (i.e., the A/C disconnected), you risk the laptop suddenly shutting down even when the battery is fully charged.
There are other problems as well, and frankly the memories of wasted hours are too painful to drudge up.
I can't say great things about HP support, either. Oh sure, they try to resolve things, they aren't impolite or anything (although sometimes the accent gets in the way, so who knows if they are polite or not). But there's just too much back and forth, for many problems that you end up resolving with Google searches in an eighth of the time.
One great benefit this laptop will give you it will train you to backup your computer fairly frequently (I use Acronis for backing up & restoring, and it's a godsend), because you never know when you will have to send it back to the shop.
It was a bad mistake, choosing an HP laptop based on the look and feel of the keyboard, especially when past experiences with Toshiba have always been positive.
Try another HP series; steer clear of the dv7's.

I researched multiple computers from several brand names and settled on this one. It came loaded up nicely and the price was very reasonable. Overall, I've had it almost a month and I'm really enjoying it. I haven't begun to explore all that it can and will do. No problems and it has been a pleasure to this point. I also took advantage of the Amazon account and got 0% interest... and apparently no payments (until the offer end date).Best Deals for HP Pavilion DV7-2170US 17.3-Inch Entertainment Laptop
The computer itself is good. finger print shows easily. If you are looking to install engineering programs on it it is better off buy the HP Pavilion Dv7-2270us because it got the 7200 rpm HD. As for Amazon Company, it is one of the best to deal with. I sent an e-mail to the customer service and explain the problem with this model # (it has the 5400 rpm HD). Amazon issued a full refund including return shipment fees. Thank you Amazon for your service.Honest reviews on HP Pavilion DV7-2170US 17.3-Inch Entertainment Laptop
Great Laptop Performance. Fast for all entertainment needs. Huge and fast hard-drive and good monitor resolution. First, let me qualify by saying 1) My experience with the HP Pavilion dv7 might be a fluke, and 2) Amazon doesn't seem to sell my exact model number, so I'm injecting the review here, because HP deserves it. My specific laptop is closely related to the one advertised on this page.Normally, I don't write a review at all, if the product really sucks my experience might be a fluke, or if it's a book I might have misunderstood the intent. You will be VERY unhappy if you buy this machine. I see a few fake paid-for reviews here, but the fact is that the wireless performance is unacceptable. Lenovo tech support told me that the there is an antenna design flaw and there is NO TIME FRAME FOR FIXING THE PROBLEM. On it's website forum, Lenovo lied about fixing the problem on models manufactured after August 2012.

So this computer has all the specs you could need, SSD for Windows to run in, USB 3.0 for fast transfers, super light and thin. Only issue is that the trackpad seems very touchy, I wish there was a way to separate the buttons from the pad but so far I have not figured it out. Otherwise I would recommend this to others.Saturday, May 17, 2014
Reviews of Dell Inspiron 17R i17R-1842sLV 17.3-Inch Laptop Core i7-3632QM
AWESOME! Of all the laptops I've had, this is by far the best. It's well constructed and sturdy. Our almost 80 pound dog walked across the screen and there was NO damage. This Dell runs Quiet....no whirring wizzing or loud fan sound. The keyboard is very quiet when I am using it: no click-clack, plus the number pad is a great addtion. The on/off key is well placed and the mouse works well.
Now, Windows 8: It is great once it is set-up to your liking. It has an Apple-esque feel to it, but not quite there yet. If you do not like the new Windows, you can always convert back to the regular old-school Icons by hitting the desk top key.
This Dell has been a very good purchase for me. Dude, I got a Dell!!!
Update: I finally got my computer back. I contacted Dell through their Facebook page. The gentlemen I corresponded with looked into it and kept me in the loop with what was going on. I haven't had any trouble with it since. It's a great computer as long as it works.

I should have paid more attention to the reviews, but this computer had everything I was looking for at a decent price. It was great for six months until it wouldn't boot on startup. I talked with tech support, and was instructed to send the computer to Dell for repair. The last update on the Dell site said that the part needed to repair the computer wasn't in stock and that there is no timeframe on when it will be repaired. Dell never even tried to contact me about this issue. It's bad enough that the computer quit working, but I'm extremely displeased with Dell's customer service.Update: I finally got my computer back. I'll keep it simple, using solidworks 2012 and 2013 premium side by side with real view graphics on AND working on large assembly..... this laptop doesn't even break a sweat. exceeds my expectations.I ordered this PC for my consulting business in which I do everything from Software Development to Web Design. I've had it for about a week or so in which I typically have open multiple Micrsoft .NET IDE's, Adobe programs, web browsers, emails, etc. It's pretty rare for the CPU usage to get above 15%. With a quad core this this thing is an animal and it shows. Really good graphics for this price the display is crisp and sharp. I use Adobe Fireworks and Dreamweaver for design work and the display is right up there with higher-end video cards. Fit & finish is superb as it is on all EliteBooks I've had. The only negative I'd say is this is a heavy laptop. This is a workstation built for heavy lifting so I kind of expected it would be on the heavier side. As of now 5 stars.

HP nc6120 15" Notebook PC Review
The equipment was delivered in good working order, but was shorted a 256MB (DIMM). Advertised as 512gb RAM, had 256MB and start-up showed that the system had been altered. Someone obviously removed the DIMM.
I e-mailed customer service. They referred to it a defective system, which was incorrect, it was merely missing the DIMM. They took no action other than to guide me to the 800 number. No service there. Should change their name to customer mis-direction.
While I like the laptop I don't feel this vendor did a very good job of delivering what they advertised. Poor on delivery, poor on follow-through. If I have to chase to get what I paid for it takes away from an otherwise good deal. I won't purchase from this vendor again.
UPDATE: November 6 2012 :: The seller called my home phone suggesting that I was trying to pull a scam by mistakenly placing bad review (from a different seller) in his seller comments area. I felt intimidated by the call and thought that it was far too reactionary for a mistakenly placed bad review. The above review was written first and he didn't even mention that. He was slightly rude and a bit too aggressive for my taste. The battery does not work but I was forgiving for that just because I am not one to stir up trouble. His response to my asking if the battery should be working was something to the tune of " we test them all before we send them out". Mine does not work. I am not a scam artist and I do not have a bad history with Amazon. This seller should apologize and allow me to post the exact apology here in the comments section and he should send me a working battery. NEVER LET THE SELLER HAVE YOUR PHONE NUMBER. Don't get the sort of call that I did. Get it all in writing as Amazon keeps the seller buyer text exchange for a while and you and or the seller can use that to back up your claim should an issue arise.
SELLER: Do not call me again. Put it in writing please. Thank you.

It was shipped promptly and is in great condition. I uninstalled Windows and installed Ubuntu and all is well. Works fine. The one that I got will need a new battery if I ever want to use it without the cord but that's no biggie. Until I need the battery I'll just plug it in. Works for me. The total price that I paid was $155.00 S/H included. Despite being around 6 years old, this laptop still has a lot to offer. Right out of the box I started it up and hooked up to the internet. My first thought was "Wow! I really got a bargain!", I could surf the web quickly and seamlessly. Later on I added Microsoft Word and other programs for college work. Even though it feels kinda hefty, it is very compact and can fit in a bookbag easily. Ive had it for a while now and never had a problem with it so far. Its great for college work or just surfing the web, which is exactly what I needed.Honest reviews on HP nc6120 15" Notebook PC

Sony VAIO VPCF136FM/B 16.4" Notebook (1.73 GHz Intel Core i7 Reviews
I did quite a bit of research for a new laptop. This Sony Vaio is excellent for the price. I wanted to make my own laptop on dell and sony website and everything was way above this price with all these features. For excellent performance and added features I didnt mind spending this much. I play games with no problem and multi task with amazing speed. The fan noise is a little loud at times of long gaming but I expected that. Overall I recommend this laptop.
Battery life is short(90-100min) if you're using wi-fi or running the bluray drive, however if you have the wi-fi off it jumps up to almost 3hrs on power saver mode. I haven't had issues since I plan around those things. In addition the 5400rpm harddrive seems rather laggy if you're running large programs, not annoying but noticeable when loading sometimes.
I'm currently looking into a RAM upgrade and getting an SSD drive to replace the stock hdd to help with "laggy" feeling.
All in all, this is a great laptop if you can find it at the right price point. I highly recommend it!
Minor down-side is battery life (to be expected for i7 CPU) and also the fan nice (again, loaded machines tend to generate more heat). Bought it from the Sony outlet Center for a cut-throat price so am super-happy.
Bought my keyboard skin on eBay (from China because Sony didn't make em). Got my protector case and adapter case from Amazon (zero tax) so I'm all good.
Don't forget to email yourself the Serial Number for this and other gadgets you may have in case it's lost or stolen ;)
Good luck!

I just purchased my Sony laptop to replace a 2 year old HP pavillion series that had many overheating problems. This laptop is does not have much lag time and does not seem to have the same over heating issues. I know I could feel different long term, but this last month I have been very pleased with how it runs my applications/games. I was even pleased that it did not seem to be burdened with a lot of extra programs. I definately would recommend this laptop for someone who need a little faster processing laptop. I know there are a few cons, but I have not run into the problem of accidently turning it off because the turn off is on the side where the mouse may be.Best Deals for Sony VAIO VPCF136FM/B 16.4" Notebook (1.73 GHz Intel Core i7
I've owned this laptop since Jan 2011 and its been great. Great hardware and all-around performance. I bought it at a brick and mortar store for $1300 after taxes, so $1800 strikes me as pricey (maybe I just got lucky?) but it was a great value buy for me.Battery life is short(90-100min) if you're using wi-fi or running the bluray drive, however if you have the wi-fi off it jumps up to almost 3hrs on power saver mode. I find this laptop to be super fast and efficient for video editing, etc. so have to give it 5 stars. Using CS5 Creative Suite Pro Premiere Pro and it's a breeze working on this Vaio model. Review of HP G62-373dx 15.6" Laptop / Intel Core i-3 Processor / 3GB DDR3
I think this is a decent computer for the money. But my god, with all the waiting for updates every time you try to boot the thing, you could go off and make a three-course meal and STILL not have the computer ready to go when you returned. It took 20 minutes to boot up last night, and all I wanted to do was a quick check of email to look at a video a friend had sent me. Really really frustrating.
I should not be surprised -the box it came in was covered in a deep layer of dust. This baby is old news.

I bought this laptop used (2nd owner). It looks great, with a diamond metalic finish on the lid and around the keyboard. The 320GB HD was fast, and the wireless internet modem was the best I've ever used. It features a DVD RW drive, and a 15.6" screen. It charges pretty fast. CONS: It gets hot. Not enough to burn you, but it is noticeable. You can feel the heat blowing up through the keyboard and out the left side vent. I recommend a hard flat surface underneath while using. The screen is ok, but appears a little washed out compared to other brands. 2 Hour or less battery time is less than the 3-4 hour standard other brands feature. Bottom line, it has great features, worked fast, and is reasonably priced. If the CONS don't bother you, it's a nice laptop.Best Deals for HP G62-373dx 15.6" Laptop / Intel Core i-3 Processor / 3GB DDR3

Buy Sony VAIO Fit Series SVF15212CXB 15.5-Inch Core i3 Laptop
While the laptop looks great (aesthetics and awesome picture), a couple of design flaws make it tough to keep. The first problem is that the wrist rest area gets very hot; there doesn't seem to be any thermal insulation separating the surface and the CPU inside. Second, the wifi connection works intermittently. Never had this issue at home with my other computers. And I see from the Sony site that many others are experiencing this.
The backlit keyboard doesn't have a brightness adjustment, I think. But it's not bad. It's not to bright, or to dark, its just right. I've been dealing with desktops for years and not had a laptop for a long time so I am still getting use to the keyboard and thats why I got the 10-key version. So far I'm still getting use to it and its not bad.
The screen does need to be adjusted for your viewing angle, soooo make sure you adjust it in the right position before you move it.
The sound quality is amazing!! Loud! Clear! Skyping right now and the voice is clear!
Haven't tested the battery life.
To end it all, the webcam is amazing! According to the other person on Skype. "It's so clear!" and I'm in a dark room. Like no other lights except the laptop. Very satisfied! I also installed a start button, and I love it. I am also having problems with transfering a picture from my Oppo Find 5 to this laptop via NFC. Says "The receiver doesn't support large beam transfers", so I don't know why 147kb is alot. But I will see what I can do to fix this.
Great laptop for the price. Still testing it out as this review is out.
On the flip side, the one minor annoyance (with the sony vaio) and i will say minor because i prefer the annoyance over the consistent freeze-ups of the toshiba: the vaio does lose internet connection on a scale of...i'd say infrequently after a week's use. It's maybe done it 3 times of the 10-15 uses. My wifi signal will indicate "limited" even when i'm right in front of my signal. At that point, it's been a simple disconnect (from the laptop wifi), count to 10 and reconnect. It's worked all 3 times so far, but it does need that 10ish second gap. Not a deal-breaker for me, but i could see how it might annoy others on varying degrees, so heads-up.

This is a very nice laptop. It looks and feels far more expensive that what it actually is. The boot time is around 10 seconds, which I must say I truly enjoy as I am now departing from my aging HP and Asus laptops. The backlit feature is great for low light or night time and the screen is great. The only complaint I would say it the bloatware that comes with it. I used the Sony Update feature to update all drivers and it made the keyboard unusable so I would say uninstall and be weary, trust updating from Windows Update only. although this is not the touchscreen version, the interface is very fluid, and even thought Windows 8 has that terrible learning curve, it is still a great laptop. I definately recommend this laptop as a "back to school" laptop as it has both the capacity to serve as a work and entertainment laptop. :-)Best Deals for Sony VAIO Fit Series SVF15212CXB 15.5-Inch Core i3 Laptop
So far I'm still testing this, and getting use to it. I'm for one isn't a fan of Win8 buuuuuut I'll get use to it. Was going to install Win7 but couldn't get into the bios. Otherwise, it's a fast start up. Very fast. IMO I think the trackpad is a weird placement, and I miss the actual left click and right click button, takes awhile to get use too. I liked the size and the screen was good but these new mouse pads are terrible 1 hour into it I wanted to throw the computer out the window. The mouse pad had no right or left click buttons and there was no control with the cursor at all. If your going to get a Sony Vaio I recommend the i5 processor the i3 is a little to basic and slow for me but could do well for someone who just looks up e-mail and browses the web. I also loved the illuminated keyboards, all laptops should have this feature most people use there laptops all the time and that would be good to see on more models in the future. This laptop is awesome. A week prior to this, i bought a Toshiba with an a4 processor. I was in the market after my daughter broke my dell inspiron. Her school program is based online; i searched chromebooks and lower end toshibas. Out the door price on the toshiba was certainly cheaper by a couple hundred bucks in comparison to the vaio. However, the toshiba didn't make it 3 days in my household before i was executing a return. On the Toshiba, the mouse froze several times, it was only for a couple minutes at a time, but when you're trying to get something done, it felt like hours; Netflix also took forever and sound quality was mediocre. It performed like a $300 laptop. That being said, if you're able to spend a couple hundred more, grab the lower end Sony vaio. For me, it's definitely worth it. The sound and display quality are suberp and it's able to process faster. It had no problem with Netflix and it plays music even when you close the lid. The light up keyboard is fun too. Great quality and still within a tight budget....On the flip side, the one minor annoyance (with the sony vaio) and i will say minor because i prefer the annoyance over the consistent freeze-ups of the toshiba: the vaio does lose internet connection on a scale of...i'd say infrequently after a week's use. I purchased this computer from Dell Outlet (as a refurb...find a dell coupon and get a better deal). I went with the standard i5 processor and the intel hd 4000 video. I have added 8gb of RAM, a Samsung 840 series ssd, and windows 8 pro. I realized after owning it for a few months that something was wrong with it. I'm the type to re-install an operating system when I get a computer, I hate the bloat. After doing some reading this is what I realized:
-If you do a complete reformat and install of windows...you need to initially tell it not to download updates or drivers automatically (you can prevent the need to do this if you clone your drive to a new one, or if you use the windows install without full format. Apparently Windows 8 preserves the diver structure, which is new to me.) . If you let it do this, windows will grab the "best" drivers it can find, and will install drivers that are far from optimal from the hardware company, and usually leaving you only half working.
-After you boot and activate windows (with expectation that firmware is up to date) go to dell and grab all drivers at once, install in the following order:
-Intel chipset drivers (restart)
-Other Intel software, video, sound, networking (all system hardware drivers..restart)
-Dell software you want (I like the Dell quickset software. It has some good power saving features that are great. I also suggest the touchpad, and
audio software)
-Activate your TPM in bios (this is unnecessary, but I had issues with the rest of the process if TPM was active before this, Bitlocker is great)
-Activate windows 8 quick start in bios (SSD + Quickstart gets me to my login within 4 seconds from cold boot!)
I know this is a bit complicated compared to other typical setups, but for some reason, and Im guessing that it has part to do with Dell power optimization in Dell specific drivers, this is what works. Dell needs to make this clear, but they have failed to. On this front, the product fails. But, once properly setup, this laptop is AMAZING.
Pros:
-The Upgraded Warranty. I even got this with my refurb model. It is a huge jump ahead of Dells regular service. It is easiest to take care of any Dell service issue through the chat service they provide. Ive had two experiences since I bought it. 1. They send a DVD with windows on it (no dvd drive), and I wanted to install my SSD. I called them, they furiously apologized, commented on my computer prowess for installing a new drive (I hear this is part of the "xps service" ;), and then over nighted a USB key with windows 8 Pro (upgrade from the home that came with it). After finding that they would do this, Id kinda suggest everyone who gets a DVD request a USB key as soon as they get the computer. 2. When installing the SSD, I lost a screw...I chatted with them, they commented on my computing prowess again (which I love ;), and then over-nighted me a new set of screws (like all the screws for the device). I believe they may have seen the light and are trying to return to the Dell roots of great service, which was lost along the way some where in India.
-QUALITY build! This machine is a block of aluminum. I would actually say that (except for the keyboard) this thing is built better than a Macbook Pro. It feels rigid, and has a little more weight than you might expect from it..but I like that. I'm done with the "featherweight" direction electronics have taken. They feel cheap, this feels EXPENSIVE
-Amazing battery. Once I successfully optimized this thing it has been regularly hitting 8+hrs of mixed internet use (maybe 20% media/video, 80% text/pictures)
-Screen resolution. Some have declared these screens substandard (for not being IPS), I honestly do not find that to be the case. My screen is bright, vivid, and I find 1600x900 (though not an industry standard) is my new preference.
-Once I mastered Windows 8 gestures (kill lock screen, setup script to go to desktop automatically, few other tweaks) , I've found the touch-pad to be great. You do need the dell touch-pad software for any gestures to work
-Sound is pretty good for the size of the device. It sounds good as long as you have the dell sound software running
-HD4000 can get through light gaming. I played through Portals 2 on Mid/High settings, and was also able to play through the Tell Tell Walking Dead game on high. This thing wont WOW you graphically, but with an SSD it can keep you entertained. This is obviously the price you pay for increased mobility and battery life. There is an upgrade available for the graphics, but I don't play enough to be tempted (I also read accounts of the laptop having issues switching between the on board hd4000 and the graphics card upgrade. Seems the power savings software creates choppiness. This may have been remedied).
-Dell refurbished price. Their refurbished stuff is like new! I've been buying it for years without issue, highly recommended!
Cons:
-Weight! I know I said I liked it, and I do, but..I think there may be a happy medium just a few ounces under this.
-Lack of a dvd drive. I know this is an "ultrabook", but from my understanding, the only reason that it is, is that it doesn't have a disc drive (dvd/blueray). I wish they had done exactly what they had done, forget about Intel branding, and added a light weight slot load dvd (like Apple has done for years). I bought the laptop knowing this, so its not like I can blame them.
-Software/driver issues from above. This took me a while to figure out, and I have some "computing prowess". It may just be too much of a headache for the lay user.
-Retail Pricing (its like 60% premium to the refurbish stuff)
-The type of screw they used on the bottom of the device are very delicate. They are torx based, and are not hardened well enough. After opening the device twice I needed to replace the whole lot of them (which they sent for free..so its hard to complain about!)
-The black rubberized finish on the deck of the laptop attracts grease from palms. Use rubbing alcohol on it, or use whatever you clean your lcd with (carefully, and lightly or you could damage the electronics).
-The real reason I took a star off is the keyboard. I came from a dell vostro laptop (low end business model) that had a great keyboard. It had a good tactile feel, it had a splash tray underneath it for spill protection, and it allowed a certain access to the undersides of the keys for cleaning. This keyboard has a more consumer feel. The letter font is "cutting edge", the keys are smooth and slightly concave, and though I find the back lighting to be great from time to time, it makes it look a lil flashy (it an be turned up and down form the keyboard). the keys are also built in a way that they raised out of finely cut key holes, this prevents most trash/dirt from interfering, but if something get under a key, its hard to get it out!
In all, as long as it lasts (this is written at month 6 of ownership), and the aluminum holds up (so far I cant even find a scratch on it), Im a very happy camper!
I got the Case Logic PLS-14 14.1-Inch Neoprene Laptop Sleeve (Black) to protect my laptop when I have to take it places. This sleeve is high quality and the perfect size for this laptop!
pro: battery. it can last over 7 hours. It is good for people who have a long travel.
high resolution for 14 inch PC. It is 1600*900
Ultra thin. it is about 3 CM when i fold it.
con: it is noisy when i was running game, and the heat is a little bit too high.
touch pad. there is no hot key to disable it
a little bit too heavy. it is good for PC to have a metal shell, but it too heavy for a 14 inch PC.
The graphic card need to improve. GT 630 M doesn't match i5 CPU.

I love this laptop so much! The screen is super clear the resolution is absolutely stunning! The keyboard is so smooth and it being backlit is just an extra bonus. The trackpad is super smooth and I love how there are no raised buttons on it! It boots up very quickly and the battery lasts for such a long time. Just today I've been on it for about 6-7 hours and it just died about 20 minutes ago. It doesn't overheat and the top always stays cool. The only place you feel any heat is on the bottom. In comparison to a Macbook Pro, it is heavier, but worth the extra weight. It's a solid machine and it looks so sleek! Love this laptop, great choice if you're considering a Dell, Utrabook or trying to decide between Mac or Windows. The only downside to this laptop is that it doesn't have a DVD drive, but it's still an excellent choice!I got the Case Logic PLS-14 14.1-Inch Neoprene Laptop Sleeve (Black) to protect my laptop when I have to take it places. This sleeve is high quality and the perfect size for this laptop!

I've always liked the XPS model and now with the monitor upgrades I like it even more. Other than having a problem getting Kaspersky to work right on it, it has been great. I strongly recommend this computer.
