This is a pretty solid laptop. I switched from an 08 macbook pro to this laptop so I was initially planning on being underwhelmed. The only reason I decided to switch to a PC was my macbook was running out of warranty (which I used heavily). I was able to sell it for the price of this PC with a 3 year warranty. Obviously the construction of this laptop isn't as impressive as the macbook (plastic versus aluminum). However the function and responsiveness of the operating system is similar and impressive. This is my first windows 7 experience, and I have been impressed so far. For the price of this laptop I don't think you can go wrong.

My favorite things about this toshiba besides the improved ram and storage over my macbook are:

1. Track pad lock feature, this is really handy if you use your word processor a lot.

2. 10 key keypad on this laptop is a nice feature that I didn't have on my macbook

3. The side vent cooling feature is really nice, this laptop stays cool all the time.

4. Battery seems to be pretty good(although my macbook's battery was also really impressive and could run for hours unplugged even after years of use).

The only con is the amount of crap that comes preloaded on these PC's, but I am sure that is not unique to this laptop. That is something apple figured out a long time ago. It is really overwhelming trying to figure out which programs are important and which are not. Especially when you haven't used a PC in years.

My 4 year old Toshiba laptop was getting a bit long in the tooth so I decided to get an updated one. Due to budget restraints, I couldn't get the P-series Toshiba with the upgraded graphics, so I settled on the L-series. I've had this laptop for a month and found a few interesting points that might help some of you out there.

1. This laptop is not heavy at all. The weight is really well proportioned.

2. Intel integrated HD graphics are a joke. Don't expect to play any games at any decent quality resolutions or settings.

3. The Realtek wifi adapter is about the lowest quality you can find. It would disconnect all the time, never connect at anywhere above 72mbps. If you get this laptop, spend the extra $25 on an Intel Centrino 6200 mini pci card.

4. Ram is cheap. Immediately upgrade this to 8gb of ram. As of this writing, you can pick up 8Gb for $35.

5. The touchpad multi-touch is really annoying. How annoying? I've magnified/de-magnified my screen at least 4 times while writing this.

6. The numberpad throws me off. I'm not used to it on a laptop.

7. The 500gb hard drive is OK. I'd prefer a 7200rpm model, but I can deal.

8. No bluetooth. It's a

Very happy with the laptop so far. Not a huge fan of Windows 8, but the build quality and look of the laptop is excellent. Feels solid, a wide variety of inputs/outputs including VGA for those of us who still need it, and HDMI for the future. A solid laptop at a good price. The Intel I3 processor is very solid, and I haven't had any software or hardware issues.

I have had this computer for 18 months now (got it in December 2010). It has been a good computer up until now. Mine always has run hot (70+C) and has shut off from overheating probably once a month or so. This past week the chipset has started to die and will require me getting a new motherboard.

All in all, it is a decent computer that will last for a while, but is prone to overheating and will only last 18-24 months before needed to be replaced.

I have this laptop for over a year now. It does a decent work and the performance is good for the price range. Unfortunately, it broke down recently and won't turn on anymore. It's one month out of warranty and HP wants a hefty repair cost for a burned motherboard. Can't justify to throw more money at a bad product.

I have just bought this notebook. It seems to work ok, I would definitely go ahead and purchase an 8GB RAM upgrade as it seems to bog down easily. An 8GB upgrade is only around $50. The speakers aren't the best but they will do. This is a cheap notebook and you do get what you pay for but it is definitely good for someone like me on a small budget. The main reason I wanted to make this review is to say that I purchased it from Best Buy for $279.99, right at $300 with tax. So definitely shop around for price. They didn't have it on display at the time either but I checked their website and said it was in stock at that store so I went in and asked for it and they had 11 of them. So even if they don't have it on display check the site or just ask (give them the SKU number).

I bought 4 of these at Best Buy for $279 just around $300 with taxes for our office training room. I have not upgraded the RAM but will likely do so to 4GB as that is enough for what we are using these pc's for. I would give it 4.5 stars if there was an option but gave it 5 instead. To be honest this thing at 4gb would do 99% of what the average mom and pop or home user would use it for.

I have stripped off the Norton and Best buy applications that were preinstalled and it runs reasonably fast for the processor. I watched a 720p streaming movie via Veetle.com on it with no problems just to test out the video and streaming capabilities.

Windows office 2007 runs fine on the machine and I have also installed Open office with little or no slowing down. I have opened several applications at the same time while streaming music on sky.fm and had no performance issues with the pc.

For $300 with tax this is a solid buy for anyone on a budget who wants a nice large screen laptop that is a bit big and bulky and can be enjoyed for use around the house or in a basic office environment.

If I have any further updates I will post a followup post.

I bought this computer Gateway NV57H50U Laptop / Intel Celeron B800/ 15.6" Display / 2GB Memory Black about 3 days ago and I love it!!! It's waaaaaay better than the old Dell (2007) that I already had. This laptop is pretty entry level but it has ALL the bells & whistles necessary for today's modern society. BTW, I only paid $279 at Best buy. The speed is excellent in comparison to my 60GB Hard drive Dell, but I will be upgrading the RAM to 8GB as well as another customer said. Mine isn't "laggy" as they put it, but hey, why not! It has a dedicated number pad (which I totally love) and it also has an HDMI port which is perfect when u download a movie and you don't want to wait for it to burn! Hope this review helps someone.

I usually prefer smaller laptops, but this was bought for my dad, and it's his first computer ever, so I thought the bigger screen would be appealing to him and to his poor eyesight.

I had to write a review after the only previous reviewer mentioned that the laptop was very slow that's not true at all. The laptop is more than fast enough to deal with regular apps/surfing/movie watching, which is what it will primarily be used for. If you're thinking about heavy gaming, you should be looking for a different kind of laptop. And hp has excellent laptop builds, the sound is very low and you barely hear the fan at all.

The biggest problem is Windows 8, it's not very intuitive, and it takes some time getting used to. IMO Windows 7 is a better design for people who are not tech savvy.

12/26/12 Edit:

My Dad LOVES this laptop. It was very difficult to teach him some of the computer concepts, but the laptop itself is phenomenal and runs beautifully. The main reason for the review edit is that you can have a start menu for Windows 8 it's called 'Classic Shell'. It is very easy to use and makes Windows 8 a lot better, just remember to uncheck the explorer and IE options in the installation process and just download the classic shell start menu. You get to enjoy the new upgrades from Windows 8 AND the previous benefits of Windows 7 all together. Windows 8 is the main reason I still have my review at 4 stars instead of 5, if it was just for the laptop itself I would grade it at 4.5-5 stars.

5/2/13 Edit:

I had to knock this down to 3 stars because of hardware troubles. Recently the fan malfunctioned and fortunately the computer was still under the original warranty (did not buy extended) so I was able to send it sent in to HP to get it fixed for free. I believe one of the things that contributed to the fan malfunction was how hard my father was running the laptop once he found out how to burn CDs (I know, old school!) Now that his laptop is back and functional, I purchased a quality notebook cooler to help keep his laptop in tiptop shape. A little disappointing that I encountered a computer issue this early, but I'm thankful it happened while still under warranty.

Another Black Friday buyer here, first let me say what a great job Amazon customer support was when I had a small issue with billing and this order, top notch as always.

Anyways...

So I've owned the laptop for about 2 weeks now, the latter of which I've spent a considerable amount of time tinkering with various everyday tasks.

Let me begin with the OS, Windows 8 and it's relationship to the computer...

While I won't go into a personal review of the new Windows experience, which for the record I do mostly approve of, I will say this laptop does NOT have a Touch Screen, so you will be navigating with your track pad(more to come on that) or your mouse. Anyone who has used Windows 8 understands most of the new fancy changes were created with the idea of tablets in mind. By that I mean to say that getting around would be considerably easier with touch controls. That's not to say it isn't completely and totally usable with your mouse, just that technically it would be easier with touch. Personally I understood this going in, and it was a conscience choice not to get a touch screen as I'm not too keen on finger print smudges on what is replacing my primary machine. As a suggestion for someone looking for touch screen laptops, I would really look into one of the new flip style notebooks/ultrabooks, such as the lenovo yoga 13, where the computer pretty much converts to a tablet. One last thing I'll mention about the OS is the boot time is super fast (it doesn't actually shut down, but go to a kind of hibernate) Unless I have to restart I can be up and running in about or less than 20 seconds. For a fuller look into the actual pro's and con's of Windows 8 vs Windows 7 I'd check out engadget or cnet for in depth opinions.

*edit I should mention there is a fair amount of bloatware (software pre installed by the manufacturer) which is completely unnecessary (norton who?) but it is easy enough to uninstall, though time consuming that it is.

Next, the physical design/features...

By far the best thing the g7 has going for it is the beautiful screen and resolution. A beefy 17.3" and 1600 x 900 are nothing to scoff at when most budget laptops in this price range stick to the safe 1366x768 and 15ish". Again I say, it's simply perfect to sit down and enjoy family pictures, HD movies/tv, video games(more later), the real estate available also makes multi tasking with multiple programs open in the same screen completely doable without making sacrifices to what you see.

To go along with the screen the speakers are quite good as well, not blow you out of the water great, but I've heard a number of notebook speakers and these are certainly above better than average. Admittedly I am no audiophile, but I clearly hear the boom of a bassy explosion or the high's through pandora radio. Even with the lid closed, I can fill the room with music playing for a gathering.

The outer and inner shell are a glossy reflective black, which to some may be an inconvenience which could be a smudgy nightmare, it doesn't irk me much however, after a week of heavy use I haven't been bothered in the slight by it.

The keyboard is spacious with firm keys, layed out in a familiar manner with some usefull hoteys built into the "f" keys such as brightness, volume, play/pause. As far as keyboards I enjoy using this one, the keys have just the right amount of push to them and they are well spaced out.

Connections wise there is something to be desired, no bluetooth (get a bluetooth dongle for cheap) is a bit of a hit, but once more for the price I think I'll live. HDMI is on the left side and easy to get to, perfect for plugging into your TV or A/V receiver. The power connection is on the right back, with the actual plug being a straight long type, so you will need at least a couple inches on your right side if your sitting this on a desk. The cable and power brick also are acceptable lengths with a velcro strap and small clip for cable management.

The touch pad. So far my only real gripe with this machine is the touchpad. I'm not sure if it's a matter of software(synaptics) or RAM or I just don't know yet, but this pad has some issues. It is multi touch capable but the multi part simply does not work 100% of the time. No issues with simple one finger point and click(or tap) but when using gestures such as two finger scroll, two fingers anywhere can scroll horizontal or vertical, it will lock up and not be responsive for up to 2-3 seconds sometimes. There is a pinch to zoom which I inadvertently activate once in a while as I'm doing the two finger scroll as well. Two finger tap acts as a right click, unfortunately this has the same frequency of fail rate with the two finger slide, slightly less maybe but noticeable still. Obviously there is a problem with accuracy with multi touch, and I'm looking for a solution but for now there you go. I know it can be done right, I've used more than one mac with the multi gesture track pads and those have all worked perfect for me so we'll see, hopefully you can get some better software to fix it. The physical buttons, left and right click, work well enough, just as you'd expect, and a firm press and click.

Games...

I'm somewhat of a gamer, so of course I was extremely curious to what I could throw at this machine. It does has a dedicated card, AMD Radeon HD 7520G, it won't win any prize fights, but certainly should pull in some good bouts.

I loaded Diablo 3 and surprisingly it ran fairly well, with settings like textures at the highest but a few reductions in physics and lighting the game runs in full screen 1600x900 at about 20 fps average, and looks quite good doing so. You can lower some settings to improve your frame rate, but it's more than playable.

Starcraft 2 wasn't as successful, I can run it at high settings(ultra being higher) at about 20 fps as well, but that game will slow down as more units appear onscreen and the game progresses, and there can be a fair amount of things happening later in games, so you will likely have to turn down your graphic fidelity to get it playable.

Portal 2 looks fantastic and runs at the highest settings with a fluid gameplay, sorry I didn't get the fps for this one but it's smooth and fast as far as I can tell.

Less graphically intensive games such as Torchlight 2, Super Meat Boy, The Walking Dead all look perfect and run great. I did try the X-Com Enemy Unknown demo, but it didn't run quite well enough to try and get it working better.

I'll likely update this at a future date when I've tried some other games and report how they ran.

*Conclusion*

I feel as if I've been rambling for a while now and I may have lost some of my original thoughts but I'll summarize here real quick.

Biggest PROS~

Screen size and resolution 17.3" and 1600x900 pixels are above and beyond the call of duty for this price (currently $500 on amazon) Even better when I payed $420 on black friday week. Looks beautiful and crisp

Keyboard is spacious and quite comfortable

Battery Life( I think I forgot to mention this above) Listed as 3 hours, easily that running HD video and multi tasking in the background, more than enough for my needs

Plays recent video games, such as diablo 3, great and more than capable of less graphically intensive games such as torchlight 2

Biggest CONS~

TouchPad multi-touch simply doesn't work 100% of time. Could be software, will hopefully find a solution

No bluetooth, I can live with this however remembering the price, and you can find a good cheap dongle you can plug into one of your 3 USB's

(Not a huge CON, but the hardrive could be bigger, 500GB can fill up quite quickly these days)

Bloatware, but this almost doesn't count since everything comes with bloatware now, just find and delete it if you know what your're doing.

In my opinion, worth the buy alone for the screen size and resolution.

Hope this helps someone.

If you have the expertise to reformat this laptop and set up Windows 7 properly with drivers, this is an excellent budget laptop. I've already linked the HP drivers you need in the Q&A sections.

Overall, a great value for the 17" screen and nice looking black metallic paint. Doesn't feel cheap at all. I've already upgraded the hard disk and RAM, and plan to trash the Atheros wi-fi adapter soon.

Wi-fi speeds are OK for Internet access but go way down over the LAN. See product images on how the Centrino N 1000 wifi card registers & works fine with this laptop.

8GB RAM upgrade kit I installed:

Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600 MHz (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory (CMSX8GX3M2A1600C9)

I also purchased this laptop on Black Friday. I received the laptop yesterday and spent the afternoon setting it up. I did a lot of preference tweaking and burned a recovery disc; everything went well. However I could not locate the windows 8 key code to save for any possible future use and so I contacted and chatted with HP support. Support finally figured out that the key was stored in the BIOS and wouldn't normally be required to be re-entered in the future if I replace the hard drive or other components. This is new to me but since windows 8 had already set itself up earlier that day without me providing the key it did make sense. I like its look and as another poster stated the laptop is very quiet. I do wish it had bluetooth though. Another negative is no lighted indicator for the caps key and the numbers lock key. The keys are also very square which at first was odd to me but they feel fine to type on. As for speed it seems fine. Windows 8 is a bit odd but I 'm catching on. Although I've only had it for one day now, my first experience and impression are very good.

I see a few people complaining that this computer is slow. My parents are not technologically inclined, so after learning it was running on Windows 8, which I had never used before, I knew I would have to learn it myself and then teach them how to use it.

Thankfully I found a program online called Win8 Start Button, so at the least I could make the computer skip the metro screen and go directly into desktop mode, along with the good ole start button! I played with the computer for several hours. Watched a Netflix movie, surfed the web as I normally would and had no issues with its performance.

If people were expecting a gaming pc, or a multitasking pc(for example: running Microsoft excel, Photoshop, surfing the web etc) concurrently, then I could see them having issues with the computer. You can upgrade the memory if you need some extra power, but the AMD processor is a budget, eco friendly cpu. Not an Intel ; powerhouse

.

But for a computer that is going to be used for skyping, web surfing and storing pictures, I and my parents found it to be perfect for them. Especially for only 379.99(Black Friday deal)

We live out in the sticks, and when we finally got reliable 3G broadband and a wireless network set up, I was ready to no longer share the 2 year old computer with the rest of the family and get a laptop of my own. I use this laptop mainly for my home office: word processing, spreadsheets, internet, photo editing, and a few specific programs. I've found this unit to be a very reasonable tool for these functions.

This laptop is lightning fast, has plenty of memory, decent graphics/sound, and seems well constructed. I've read a couple of reviews that mention slow start ups, but I have not found this to be the case. I agree that Windows 8 has a pretty big learning curve for the first few days ("intuitive", my left foot!), but after some initial frustration I was able to navigate through the program screens rather easily. I find I still favor the "classic" laptop homescreen, but since Win 8 is app driven, that may be part of why you can have so many screens/tiles open and working with no speed lag. I also really like that the function shortcuts are printed on the keys in blue so I'm not constantly looking them up until I memorize them. I am not a fan of touchpads, so I like being able to quickly disable it with just a keystroke and turn on my wireless mouse instead. Bluetooth connected to all my other devices (wireless speaker, wireless headphones, my Droid X) without missing a beat. Again, noticed no loss of speed or data with multiple connections active.

Just a couple of things that bug me:

1. The CD drive is pretty flimsy. The first time I inserted a DVD to try out the graphics, the DVD did not stay in the tray.

When I pushed the tray into the laptop, the DVD floated up and lodged in the housing above the drive. Fortunately, I was

able to fish the DVD out using a piece of padding and some tweezers without damaging the laptop or the disk.

2. There is no caps lock/number lock indicator light. Sounds like a small thing...until you want to do a lot of word processing.

This kind of drives me crazy.

3. Not a big fan of the shiny piano case finish on the exterior and around the screen. Fingerprint city! I am always wiping

the thing off so I don't look like a slob.

4. There are no programs loaded onto the laptop "as is" that are not internet driven. I kind of enjoyed having a few games and

goodies on the old Windows formats that were available to play offline. Bye, bye solitaire.

Admittedly, the above list are small things that I like to grouse about, but they would not be enough alone to keep me from making this purchase again. I still think this is a good machine for the money.

Good for the price (680$ ish) although there are minor flaws with this design.

Quick note: I've maxed out the ram, installed an ssd and installed windows 7.

Even without the ram/ssd upgrade this computer is still quite fast.

Good stuff

+ Construction is fine, nothing's loose (flex below the keyboard though)

+ Screen is quite bright, should be view-able outdoors if sun isn't to bright

+ Optical drive (not flimsy at all)

+ Not too bulky

+ 3rd gen i7

+ Keyboard is comfortable and responsive

+ Exterior design is very sensible

+ Internal fan is usually very quiet

+ Good packaging, arrives in one piece.

Not so good stuff

Acer doesn't sell higher capacity batteries so you will have to order from some shady foreign retailer if you need one.

Bad speakers, you can compensate somewhat with third party software. I personally recommend breakaway audio enhancer instead of the dolby home theater.

Both the lid and plastic surrounding the touchpad are fingerprint magnets.

Keyboard and the edge below it will leave marks on the screen (happens on all laptops).

Touchpad placement could be better. It will impede left-handed typing unless temporarily disabled, or until you adjust.

Touchpad gestures are clumsy, 'unlocked' versions of the elantech touchpad driver don't actually exist. (More on this below)

No caps lock, scroll lock, or num lock indicator lights. (Arguably not a bad thing)

Keyboard has minor ghosting issues.

Other thoughts:

If you're going to install a fresh OS as I did, finding suitable touchpad drivers is next to impossible. Each driver version that you can hunt down on the internet removes some features and activates others for no obvious reason. Basically, no publicly available drivers enable all the hardware supported features at the same time. The only way to permanently activate all of the touchpad's features (2/3/4 finger gestures, regions, scroll settings, etc..) is to edit the driver's installation config file. Shame on elantech and acer for not having any sort of documentation or support for this. If the stock setup is fine or if the touchpad gestures are irrelevant then ignore this.

Also, the hm77 chipset supports up to 16gb of ram @ up to 1866mhz (or even higher, though not officially). You are *not* limited to 8gb as stated in the specifications.

Average cpu temp is 47-55c on a light workload, around 85c under stress.

Screen is glossy, not matte.

No technical manual included, but you can find one online if you search around.

Note that you have to hold f2 at boot to access the bios. If you have an SSD you may have to go in there and enable 'legacy bios' to get it to boot.

Also note that bios options are severely limited, the only thing you can adjust is boot order and system time. That is all.

It was right before Christmas when I bought this laptop and what caught my eye was the price considering everything you get for the price.

First of all the screen is a whopping 17.3 inch widescreen with an awsome color display. On top of the display is an integrated webcam with microphone which I have used from time to time without any problems. Just below the unit are the controls for power, sound, media controls and WIFI. The only button really is the power all of the other buttons are touch sensitive. Just below this you will find the speakers which are decent however the quality could be better but I am satisified for what I do with this laptop. Below the speakers is the full keyboard with numeric keypad just to the right and below this is the touch mouse pad. On the back of the monitor you will find a lighted HP logo and just below that you will find the removable battery.

On the left side of the laptop you will find the following ports...

External Video Connector

HDMI Connector

RJ 45Ethernet port (10/100)

eSATA Connector

2 USB Ports

A notebook expansion Port (which holds the remote for controlling the CD and windows media)

A integrated SD-MS/ProMMC/XD Reader

On the right side of the laptop you will find the following ports...

Power Connection

Locking mechanism

RJ11 Modem port

2 USB ports

Blu-Ray DVD Drive & Burner

On the front of the display you will find indication lights for the power, battery and hard drive and connections for connecting external headphone and a microphone.

After I purchase my unit I upgraded some of the components and actually replaced the 500GB hard drive with two 250 solid state drive which reduced the weight and temperature just a bit but the drives allows Windows to boot now in less that 15 seconds! I also upgraded the memory to 8GB and Windows 7 from the Home version to the Ultimate version.

This laptop works great for what I do which is studying (why I chose the large display), Internet & email, music, visual studio programming and from time to time I will watch a movie. I have not had any problems with the unit since I bought it, to me it does just what I need.

This is a very big laptop and you may have some challenges with weight, heat and finding an adequate bag to carry everything in and because I do significate traveling I wanted something close to what I have at home and this is very close and allows me to work, study or play very comfortly.

Remember laptops tend to be items where personal values dictate your needs so this may not be the unit for you. Also because these are mechanical devices you can experience problems while others do not so I always recommend dealing with a company that will stand behind their product.

Would I recommend you purchase this laptop? No, this is a decision that you must make.

Be very careful with this laptop!

In January I bought two (in two diferent stores) and less than a couple of months both machines had the main board and video chipset completely fried by it's own overheat! Some technicians I consulted told me that there isn't proper ventilation coolers on the video chipsets, so if you plan to use the blu-ray driver very often it will fry the maiboard.

Just connect the facts: there isn't offers of New DV7-3065 in stores. Amazon only offers refurbished ones. It's hard to find information about it even on HP website. I bought two machines, in two different stores (the second a week later than first) and the two laptops have had the same problem!

I'm even more unlucky because I live outside US and HP doesn't extend warranty overseas. I had to spend about US$340 for each one to have it fixed (almost the half price I've paid) and I'm not sure if the problem will happen again. I'm definetly going to resell it on ebay or similar.

Don't buy this junk, unless you are needed to an egg frier! It should be very good on it!

I bought this computer about two months ago for basic video and HD uses. Although I no longer have the use for the Bluray DVD player, I love this computer. The only problems I have had were based on using too many applications of windows explorer at the same time. I haven't taken any of the HP extra software off of this machine and suggest not doing so. There is a remote control that works great and fits into the side of the computer in the express card slot for using the DVD player. The computer would run faster without this software, but I have no need for a screamer. I play a few games to include flight simulator but I just turn down the graphics a little and it runs fine. I purchased this computer refurbished for $569 and have been more than satisfied. The HDMI out has been super useful in that I connect netflix to my other TV for movies. All in all this is a great computer for moderately complex programs. Photoshop CS3 runs fine as well as all of the graphics software that was included. It includes great software: Corel Photo Shop Pro Photo X2, Corel Video Studio 12, a Cyberlink suite that includes Powerdirector V7, and Power2Go, Labelprint. I had no clue these programs were included and they are definitely an added bonus. This is a solid video/graphics machine that delivers with software and hardware. You will not find a better machine for the money that also includes a Bluray player at a great price.

bought this DV7-3065DX second hand & repaired it these models overheat easily & crash readily along with poor speakers don't leave much to be desired.

but when you consider hdmi out, supermulti light scribe Blu-ray optical drive with an port for a second hard drive these option's alone in late 2009 puts this machine in rare company I've decided to make it mine even though my hpdv2610us has a 14" screen and way better speakers it's still only entry level.

It gave me an issue after 3 wks of owning it. I had to call HP Support and pay them to fix it. Seller would not help nor help pay for the extra I had to pay to get fixed. But love the computer. I should have went with the refurbished one because by time I paid HP Support I paid close to the same amount. But HP walked me through steps to fix it so I won't have that problem again. Haven't had any issues since then.

With all the modern innovative technology out there these days its hard to compete with the ultrabooks, touchscreens, ultraportables, and luxury lines. However, I would say this HP pavilion 15 holds a good spot in the market. Here is why:

Pros

Nice big 15.6 inch screen with viewing angles, I don't have to constantly tilt the screen every which was to watch movies or show people things

Keyboard is pretty nice! I had to get used to this island or chiclet style but that happened pretty quickly

Battery life is superb. It is estimated for up to 5 hours but I've gotten 5 1/2 with browsing video streaming etc

Its fairly light weight

The sound quality is excellent!! Normally I have to turn movies and music to full volume but often I have to turn it down because the speakers get so loud!

Large touchpad, easy to slide your fingers across

Cons

The built-in mic is awful, I sound like a robot. Its a shame since there is no mic jack! However, there are alternatives. This was problematic when I was trying to record a voice sample for a job. I had to use a Samsung earphone/mic combo.

It is a bit on the heavy and thick side. HP makes other models that are less than 5 pounds and .8 inches thick. This one is 1.26 inches thick at its widest and about 5.14 pounds.

Gestures on the touch pad aren't so great, I had to turn several of them off

I can't describe how bad this company is. 1 of the worst worldwide. Big time business cheaters!!!

Here's HP tricking Amazon buyers PROOF:

You might think this PC is cheap or heard it's good from someone who just bought.

This is how it started with me like an Innocent Good Faith American Consumer till God made me know how bad HP is.

This PC is designed using bad Chinese parts. You will think it is a nice computer till you realize the opposite.

HP Pavilions are defected with Bad Screens. Stained screens! You send it back during its warranty a couple of months later, Pavilions monitors are back to stained for no apparent reason. It is crazy they sent it back to me with a bad cable too. What do you expect from HP made in China?! Fake manufacture HP brings to the US and break the US laws of Consumer Affairs. Selling Defective Products Knowingly is Illegal in the US.

Here's how they trick the buyers and profit over their known defects. They want you to keep buying over $100 warranties to keep fixing their originally bad product.

It wouldn't have mattered if you sent it 100 times back, you would still end up with the same problems.

HP manufactured them in China. Cheap product manufacturer with intent to keep profit using a bad and defective product thru selling warranties over and over again.

Shame on HP. Amazon needs to STOP selling HP defective products online and protect the American Consumers.

I am typing this on the model I am reviewing. I just got it today but my first impression is that Windows 8 is very bad... Not Toshiba's fault on the user interface. As far as the hardware everything looked decent and the laptop is light for its size and the screen is nice and bright at the store display. Nice keyboard feel but the track pad isn't great feeling because its textured and the track pad buttons are hard pressing. multiple clicks will hurt your fingers. The biggest disappointment are the speakers. These are the worst speakers available on a laptop. They sound like internal speakers from an old desktop PC. My iphone has better sound from its speaker. You definitely need headphones otherwise the hollow noise form the speakers is annoying. I wish I bought a higher spec Windows 7 laptop.

As I sit here writing this review, I am using the THIRD Toshiba laptop I have had to go back to get..the first one was this model, and the Wi-Fi just quit. Just stopped. nothing would make it start up again. It would only connect to the internet with a cabled connection. For a 400$ laptop, that is just unacceptable. Luckily, I had bought it at Office Depot, and they exchanged it without a problem ( it was 12 days old). I brought the second one home, and used it, loaded all the "stuff" I needed on it (not a small job) and it worked fine...for about 2.5 weeks. On start up, about 3 times out of 5, it would refuse to load web pages. The toolbar showed it was hooked into the network, and no troubleshooting program showed a problem. I restarted the unit, and it then worked. This started to happen a lot, so I tried hooking in a network cable, and sure enough, it worked fine...another bad wi-fi unit. I then traded up to the next better Toshiba ( i3 intel, 6 GB), hopefully it has a better wi-fi unit, and/or a better management program for it.

I guess we'll see.

I am very disappointed, Toshiba!

After a few months, the computer now really bogs down when starting up. I guess you pay for what you get.

It slid off my bed awhile back and now the sound doesn't work at all, either speakers or headphones.

I saw some of the reviews on here and thought I would add my 2 cents. I bought this computer at Office Depot for 350 dollars (sorry amazon ... love your prices usually but not this time) For the price and specs this is an excellent computer. If you are looking for a computer that does more than surf the web and homework this is NOT the computer for you so dont leave comments saying that this computer is bad because the graphics are not great ... they aren't supposed to be great and those are not productive comments. If you ARE looking for a comp for school (as I was looking for) this is an excellent choice with great specs and a great price. As per some of the other comments, I have had no problems connecting to the internet and if you are looking for a bigger laptop with a key pad this is not the computer you should have bought in the first place. Battery life a great (in my opinion, although I have not pushed it yet to see if it goes past 3+ hours). I agree that the arrow keys are a little annoying but then again my last two laptops were Toshiba Satellites and I was used those types of keyboards for a while. I'll get used to it. Overall exactly what I thought I was getting and works exactly for what I want; surfing and reviewing/writing documents.

I purchased this laptop for about $300 after $50 rebate, and for the price it is a very good deal with one exception. The wifi/bluetooth adaptor does not work if you are anywhere more than a few feet from the wifi router. Web browsing is slow, drops connection or operates at limited capacity if you move away from the wifi router. I spent 4 hours e-mailing back and forth to HP support in India without a solution. The support is efficient and polite, but was unable to resolve the issue. Finally I discovered a work-around that provides good wifi connectivity, however, I do not consider it a fix because it involves disabling power saving features of this laptop. To find the solution search for "Wireless issues on HP2000-US with Atheros AR9485" and read the posts on HP's support discussion site.

What I did to fix the problem (I now get amazing wifi coverage throughout the house):

Simply go into device manager, select Network Adapters, select Atheros AR9485..., select Advanced Power Save Mode turn to "off"

Next under Control Panel, select Hardware and Sound, Under Power Options select Change Battery Settings, Select "change plan settings" set both battery and plugged in to "Maximum Performance."

I would like to see HP actually fix the problem so that I could get better battery life, but for now this will do. Aside from this wifi issue the laptop provides decent performance. The screen is very sharp and bright. It has sufficient disk capacity and memory can be expanded if you want to juice performance in running multiple aps or large graphics. Overall a great laptop for the price. I just wish I had the 4 hours I spent figuring this out back.

This is is good laptop for everyday use, such as homework, light gaming, e-mailing and surfing the web. The Pentium CPU is a much better and faster CPU then the AMD E Series in this price class. Its speakers o.k. (they certainly are not Beats Audio quality) and the touch pad can be touchy, but those are my only complaints. I have seen other reviews saying they have had overheating issues, but mine has been fine thus far. To get a laptop for the price of a netbook, I think this is a good choice.

Honest reviews on HP 2000-410US (15.6-Inch Screen) Laptop

Pros:

Win 7 64 bits runs smooth.

Really fast processor B960 almost an Core i3 without threads but save alot of money.

Silent fan and 500 GB disk.

Nice slim keyboard.

Little charger the same size of a HP mini laptop.

Wifi N + Bluetooth.

Average speakers.

Cons:

Screen a little big 15.6', better will be a 14'-14.6' because no num pad is include.

A little heavy, actually dvd could be optional and can save some weight and more money.

Neither hard disk nor dvd leds so you can't see whats happening.

I compared the price on the HP site and it was about fifty dollars cheaper hear, and it would have taken about a week longer to get it. I have had the computer for a couple days. At first it seemed a little slow but after doing all the updates it is doing fine. Loads fast. I did a download speed test on it and it was 3.1 Mbs (My service is 3Mbs from AT&T) so I am pleased.

I was looking for a machine to replace a MacBook Pro that was horrible at running Linux (see notes on Linux below if you are buying this and considering putting Linux on it). I was considering going with a Lenovo, but if you want a quad-core processor you have to bump up to a machine that is over an inch thick and weights over 5 lbs. As a grad student who is constantly on the move, both around campus and in the lab, I wanted to find something slimmer but just as powerful. I found it in this machine.

Pros:

Display Amazing 1080p display, with IPS so that other viewing angles still work well. It rivals the quality of a Retina MBP, and looks much, much better than my lab mate's Lenovo T430.

Discrete graphics card With an NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M LE, with 1GB of memory, it can handle what I throw at it. I work in computer vision, and it handles 3 simultaneous Kinect inputs in real-time, and CUDA works well on it. On the gaming side, I tried my old Guild Wars 2 account, and got ~40fps on medium settings.

Full size keyboard with numberpad I love having my numberpad, and I use it often. Not many laptops tout this but for someone like me it is a godsend. The backlit keyboard is nice as well, and the keys are visible well in the dark even without it due to the fact that the keys aren't black (I'm looking at you, old MacBook Pro).

The "assist" button As I set up my machine to dual-boot Windows 8 and Linux, this button is much. much better than waiting to hit the proper key to change boot sequences/enter BIOS.

Design The machine is gorgeous and has a great aesthetic value.

NOTHING IS PROPRIETARY! A big reason I moved away from Apple. The machine is not locked down in any way, and everything is accessible if you know where to find it.

Cons:

Bezel flimsiness The bezel and screen are rather flimsy, but this is handled well if you use two hands on each side when moving it, or one had at the top center. Grabbing it from the sides tends to bend the screen a bit, which is a little concerning.

Battery life I can get roughly 4 hours out of the machine in Windows 8, and 3 in Linux. A little more would be nice but I always have my adapter with me.

Notes on Linux:

If anyone is considering getting this machine to run a distro of Linux, it works very well. I dual-boot Windows 8 with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. Everything works well in Linux with a fresh install, and it only needed a few tweaks any laptop would need. There are two ways to dual-boot this machine: the first is to simply switch between legacy and UEFI boot in the BIOS, UEFI sending you to Windows and legacy to Linux. However, with some tinkering you can leave it on Legacy and use an EFI booting tool to be able to boot from GRUB, which I am doing now.

Overall, I'm very happy with this machine, and am currently writing this review from it. It has a fast boot time, good speed, great performance, and a little bit of a wow factor with the design. If the battery life was a bit better, it would be perfect. However, better battery life would equate to more weight so I'd rather stay with a lighter machine.

My criteria for the laptop I wanted involved a conflicting set of specifications, which resulted in few options. Till this very day, I have yet to find another laptop being sold which comes as closely to matching my criteria as this one. Basically, I wanted a powerful machine I could be productive on, which was simultaneously light enough to carry around (and pretty enough to look at). After first buying a Dell XPS15 (L521x), and later deciding to return it, I have been very pleased with this laptop, especially after installing a SSD (Crucial M4 256GB, btw).

Pros:

Display quality At 1080p, of the IPS sort, there's almost nothing negative that can be said about this display. Some users have noted that the reds appear orangish, but for me it wasn't noticeable. I may have been either lucky or this just wasn't high on my priority list. The colors are vivid and the viewing angles are spectacular comparable to my Thinkpad X61 Tablet, which also had a high resolution IPS display. 1080p set the real bargains apart from the phonies (aka most ultrabooks and their pathetic weaksauce resolutions).

Dedicated graphics GeForce GT 640m 1GB. While it uses the slower VDDR3, but gaming on this laptop (I play SC2) has been no problem for me. In addition, there is a bios mod floating around which doubles the speed of the GPU (from 500MHz to 900MHz, with no increase in temps or voltage), though the actual performance difference was not noticeable to me.

Backlit keyboard with numpad I felt that the numpad was one of those infrequently used, but very necessary when needed devices, and this laptop comes with one. It was perhaps the largest factor in weeding out most laptop candidates from my consideration (judge me if you want). The keys are chicklet style, which was a first for me. Adapting to it wasn't that big of a deal.

Size and Weight this is just about the lightest and thinnest laptop that had all three of the previous criteria. It is 4.4lbs and less than an inch thick. Previously, the Dell XPS15 was also less than an inch thick, but was 5.7lbs or more. In addition, the viewing angles on the Dell was quite a bit poorer.

Accessibility and Upgradability the battery, hard drive, and one stick of RAM are easily accessed. This made it very convenient to upgrade to an SSD and to slap more memory in. Same thing can't be said about most ultrabooks. Ultrabooks = 150% marketing 50% quality

Cons:

Battery life this is the biggest deficiency for this laptop. I would have preferred it to be 5+ hours, but at Hardware and Sound > Sounds > Select Realtek High Definition Audio > Configure > Next > Check the box "Front left and right" > Next > Finish. However, even after this they are not that loud.

2 } Webcam. A disappointment, especially since I freaking love the my Sony TX9 camera ... fantastic photos and videos. However, if you want to improve the framerates of the webcam, turning off the "low light compensation" (webcam settings > camera control tab > uncheck the box). I noticed a tremendous improvement in framerate

At the beginning I was very dissapointed because I was not able to virtualize some windows server 2008 R2 in this Sony Vaio because of some SONY restrictions, but after reading some blogs on the internet I came to know that I could update the BIOS and then edit it in order to enable virtualization.

I did so and now work on this laptop very nicely.

It is a great machine, very fast, light in weight and excellent performance.

I just love it.

I reccomend it!

I bought this computer from Amazon Warehouse Deals as Used-Like New. Amazon.com did not have any new ones available. When the product arrived, I found that it came only with a power cord and laptop itself (none of the documentation was included and it came in a brown box). The laptop did not have NVIDIA GeForce graphics card, instead it had a Intel HD Graphics 4000 (someone had replaced it), and the battery life is half of what is advertised. Also, the optical drive makes a very loud noise at start up time. Apparently, Amazon Warehouse Deals Used-Like New computers are used for at least 6 months maybe more. It appears that Amazon Warehouse Deals does not have any quality control measures in place when it comes to checking used products before placing them on sale.

If this computer was new, I probably would have given it a 5 stars, but considering the condition that I got after paying $850 it only deserves 1 star.

the product is intended to be good with all bells and whistles too many features has overblown and but there are too many problems to be a quality product

Gesture mouse feature too often stops working and i have to reset the laptop to get the functionality back. Obviously software malfunction. It makes you get used to it and once it frequently stops working it is annoying and satisfaction is hindered.

Same with wireless radio: it frequently fails to connect to 2.5GHz router and i have to reset or manually connect everytime i boot. Problems I dont see even in less prestigous brand of laptops. In overall i would rate down on this after paying premium price.

Windows 8 sucks and Secure boot in BIOS setting will prevent installation of most of earlier and alternate operating systems including 7, in the BIOS it offers to disable the secure boot however it still rejects the Win7 installation CDs. Obviously the BIOS is not functioning as intended.

Screen dimms for no reason. Really bad for eyesight and frustrating. On power setting, no matter how many times you tell and set the screen brightness to maximum it relapse back to some kind of predetermined dimmer setting which pisses off. I had to contact customer service to figure out how to set it permanently and it was some kind of VAIO specific setting in the crapload of apps that came with no laptop which is easy to forget. Few months later, system became irrecorevable and I did the recovery. After the recovery, the dimmer setting sets back in like haunted and by this time, you already forgot the permanent setting. Second time you contact customer service. I hated it.

There are many things to love about the Toshiba L675. The screen is fantastic. It's bright and wide and clear and easy to read. I also like the traditional PC numeric keypad to my right. As a former bookkeeper, it makes adding up lots of numbers easy work. The Toshiba L675 has lots of memory, and as an architectural historian and writer, I need that. My last laptop had more than 30,000 high-res photos. This new laptop has plenty of space for ten times that many photos.

However, if I had to buy a $700 laptop again, I think I would spend my hard-earned dollars elsewhere. I've already had a significant problem for which I had to talk to tech support (in the Philippines) and their remedy was not impressive. In short, if this problem (discussed below) is not resolved, I have learned that it will be my personal responsibility to reformat the computer and reload all software and only then will Toshiba pay for return shipping. And then, it's a two-to-four week wait before I have a laptop again.

The problem: The Toshiba laptop gets into some kind of weird loop where it will not allow me to type normally. Keystrokes do not result in letters appearing onscreen. I type at 100 wpm and yet when this problem arises, I have no choice but to type about four words per minute, pressing each keystroke slowly and then waiting for the corresponding letter to appear on screen. It's bizarre and maddening. One day, I was ready to take the laptop outside to the woodshed and "fix" it, once and for all with my 20-pound sledgehammer. I'm a writer and I can not tolerate an ill-behaved, recalcitrant laptop.

In desperation, I called Toshiba and after the obligatory 24-minute hold, I reached "Miguel."

Toshiba's solution is this: About once every 7-10 days (when the problem occurs), I have to turn the computer off, remove the battery, depress the start button for 15 seconds (to completely drain any power) and then restart the computer sans battery. After following this procedure, Lappy returns to normality.

I'm disappointed that this is Toshiba's best solution to this odd problem. I'm disappointed that if I grow weary of this maddening problem, I have to deal with reformatting the computer and fiddling around with it for who knows how long.

However, this purchase represented a tremendous investment. I feel stuck. And so I continue, about once every 7-10 days, turning off the computer, removing the battery, depressing the start button for 15 seconds...

In the meantime, I had the hard drive on my old laptop replaced. When you have a Toshiba, it's good to keep a spare laptop in the house.

This is my third laptop and I think this was an awesome BUY! Great price for the stuff(bought it from Costco $699), very nice bright pleasant screen (I wanted to have a big screen17.3") and graphics are awesome, speed is great too with 4GB RAM. I have plenty of hard drive( 500 GB)to store videos/pictures. I am satisfied with the audio loud clear sound. The only cons I feel so far is WebCam seems to be cheap picture quality not that good. I didn't have web cam in my other laptops, so my expectations were high. Also, I was video calling international contacts... just haven't tried enough yet. But overall I am very happy with this laptop.

I JUST LOVE IT !!!

Best Deals for Toshiba Satellite L675-S7018 LED TruBrite 17.3-Inch Laptop (Grey)

I have been very happy with this laptop. I purchased it to provide a portable CAD-CAM computer that would function fast enough to use in front of clients. The Intel Core i3 chip, combined with 4 gigabytes of RAM is more than capable of performing this task. I use it with a mouse and like the fact that I can easily switch off the touchpad (recessed switch below the space bar) which frees me to use the keyboard without fear of accidentally triggering a catastrophe as my hand inadvertently brushes the touchpad. I have large hands, and the full-size keyboard, as well as the separate number pad were important to me. Battery life is better than I expected, even when using the external mouse; rendering drawings doesn't seem to have much effect on the battery. There are a few negatives (and I use that term loosely) with this computer. First, the button that opens and closes the carriage on the DVD/CD drive is recessed and usually usually requires several pokes and a peek at the side before I am successful in opening it. Second, be aware that the 17.3 inch screen means that the laptop is wider than most and your selection of laptop briefcases will be limited and more expensive than with smaller units. The only real negative I have found is with the installed RAM. There are two available slots and each slot is populated with 2 GB, meaning that if you wish to increase the memory (as I wanted to do) you will need to discard one or both of the existing memory cards. I like the fact that it came with 4 gigabytes of RAM, but wish that Toshiba had chosen to do so using one single 4 GB card, which would have made it very easy to add another 4 GB to bring it to the maximum possible 8 GB. Still, I would recommend this lap top without hesitation.

Like so many others I got a screaming deal on my machine from Costco. I think the screen is great, the hardware for the price is great, the bloatware is tolerable, Toshiba has a good track record, but the keyboard is a pain. Despite the feel (which is a bit awkward, if you do any more than minimal typing you're going to get mad. Keys that are hit once will respond twice, keys hit once or twice may not respond at all. The lady who said to take the battery out, hold down the power switch for 10 seconds, and replace the battery was right on. It DOES fix the problem, temporarily. Thanks to her for the advice.

I used to like Toshiba computers until I upgraded to the Satellite L675. The price seemed good, and the memory and processing speed appeared fantastic. However, shortly after starting to use this computer, I found the keyboard to be terrible. It is slow to respond and will often not respond at all. I was a fast typist before using the L675. It is a terrible machine. It even messes up web addresses, passwords, simple searches. Toshiba has, as far as I can tell, offered NO support to the dozens of people who like me complain on-line. Shame on Toshiba for offering a terrible product, and shame on Toshiba for not offering a means to fix it. If it can't be fixed, Toshiba should replace these computers with ones that work. (I had to correct about 30 typing errors and I rarely make mistakes -here's an example of direct typing on this machine -thi is an exampleof wht it swould look lke if I were o type directly and nt attept to fix any errs due to the inaccurat keyboad response.
