I was trying to buy a laptop to my sun. I ended up in the store and I bought this Toshiba without knowing anything. I was inclined to buy a HP laptop, but the difference of 40 bucks, I ended buy the toshiba. I got a 17.6"screen, instead of a 15'', a quad core 1.5MHz, instead of a pentium dual core, 6 GB of RAM, instead of 4GB, a 6 cell battery, instead of a 4 cell battery.

After opening the box, it was very nice, big screen, sturdy PC.

Keyboard with keypad for numbers, flat, with a space between the keys.

It has a HDMI out put and 2 3.0 USB, plus the usual stuff.

When I switched on, it reminded my iMac. I had to fill it up name, address, network, and after a while, I was facing the Windows 8 for the first time. It was not very friendly, but the whole thing is a front screen. If you get the desktop version and do the right click button, you will get familiar with the OS.

What was nice it the possibility to uninstall the bunch of things that come with, very easy.

then it was the moment to install the wi-fi printer. As you may know, printer are not made to print, but this time, it was installed before I noticed.

I deleted the Internet Explorer web browser, and installed Google Chrome. easy, great!

So far, it was a good experience, hope it will not freeze.

The only cons so far is the touch screen, that it does not have, but I did not buy with it, and honestly...we are the generation where touching the screen was a sin.

Purchased the Toshiba L75D-A7283 in August 2013 from Staples for $299 plus tax, free shipping. That price is Chromebook territory for a full Windows 8 laptop featuring a 17-inch screen, 6 GB RAM, 750 GB hard drive, and a 6-cell removable battery. For the price, this seems like a tremendous value, with a quad-core AMD A4-5000 (aka Kabini) to boot. I have an older Toshiba laptop that is 4 1/2 years old and running great, so the Toshiba name on this model is a plus for me. Probably a large part of the value equation is the relatively low cost of the AMD processor, which allowed Toshiba to squeeze in the fantastic specs. Speaking of which, when it comes to benchmarking performance, the AMD Kabini scored just 810 for Passmark, 2060 for CPU Mark, and 325 for 3D Graphics Mark. You'll have to do some research on how that measures up to your requirements, but in a nutshell, the CPU speed lies between Intel's Bay Trail and faster Celeron processors, with much better 3D performance than either of them. Compared to other AMD processors, the A4-5000 bests most E and E1 series chips and comparable to the newer E2 series, but the CPU I think tops out at 15 watts with no turbo mode, which is unfortunate but probably helps overall power consumption. In real-world usage, most programs and apps I use start up relatively fast, although I don't use power-hungry programs like Photoshop. Games like Asphalt 7 takes about 15 seconds to load to the start screen, for example, which is not blazing fast, but not terrible either. Basic 3D games like Asphalt 7 and Reckless Racing run smoothly, I'm sure more demanding games will not.

Trackpad performance is as good as it gets for Windows 8, meaning overall not that good, but much better than a budget Lenovo I had, which constantly shifted the mouse location every time my lower thumb brushed against the top corners of the trackpad. This laptop thankfully does not do that. I did disable most Windows 8 gestures though, since they seemed to interfere with basic trackpad movement, but word is that the upcoming Windows 8.1 upgrade will improve trackpad functionality. Trackpad buttons were below average, they are flush with the track pad and require relatively much effort for the button-press to register, it would have been much nicer if the buttons were raised buttons instead of flush. Keyboard spacing is very good which is expected in a 17-inch frame, with a dedicated number pad and an array of dedicated functional buttons such as volume up and down, volume mute, wifi on/off, screen brightness, etc. These dedicated buttons are much appreciated. Speaker sound is above average for a budget laptop with DTS sound, but don't expect too much here.

Official battery life is 5 1/2 hours, I would say that is realistic with screen brightness at 45%, wifi-on, continuous web browsing and other light-to-medium weight programs like a Word processor running. I would expect 2-3 hours with 3D gaming and between 3-4 hours with continuous video, depending on volume output. Screen resolution is 1600 x 900, which is 720P HD resolution, so not super nor terrible. Overall build quality is very good considering it is mostly all plastic, with such a large chassis you can induce creaking and flex, again not super but not terrible in any way. While browsing the internet or watching video, the chassis manages to stay relatively cool, you can hear the fan but it's not loud at all. Skype performance with its built-in microphone was very good. For those who are having a hard time with Windows 8 coming from an earlier Windows, just download Classic Start Menu, it'll bring back the start menu and program files, and also lets you boot directly into desktop mode. Windows 8 also seems to load faster than Windows 7, maintains a lower overhead (disk spins less... although that could be the generous 6GB of RAM), and seems just as stable as Windows 7.

Overall, there's not one particular thing from this Toshiba L75D that stands out, but taken the sum of parts, for the price, it adds up to what I feel is a tremendous value. I almost feel sorry for anyone spending anywhere near $300 for a Chromebook.

I needed a laptop for school, and as an older father and husband, did not have time to wade through all the different descriptions and such. So, followed consumers reports on this and it's amazing. Great look and feel, LARGE screen, and plenty fast. The resolution and sound are awesome too. For less than $500, you just can't beat this deal.

Honest reviews on TOSHIBA L75D-A7283 17.3" AMD Quad-Core A4-5000M Accelerated

Bought this laptop to replace my desktop. Wanted the larger screen, and I am very pleased with it. In fact, I have added an external monitor so I can have 2 workspaces on the same laptop.

It came with no manual and Windows 8. After trying hard for several days, I realized that my expectations were correct Windows 8 is not for me. As a computer professional (30 years in the industry), I am very skilled with software but not W8. It is very unfriendly to the user.

So I loaded Windows 7 on the system and have been extremely pleased with it. Aside from some software drivers, the move was painless. The driver downloads from Toshiba are only for W8, so I had to search. Found the perfect driver collection on ... the Lenovo support site, of all places (file name hsd607ww).

Would definitely buy another!

This is my 3rd Toshiba Satelite (never paid more than $450) and they last about 4-5 years of daily use before keys wear and system performance gets sluggish, but a real workhorse laptop for nearly the bottom of the barrel pricing. The Quad-core processor and 6G RAM was worth the extra $60 dollars over the lowest base model. It zips along pretty good and is supposedly a game rated laptop although I'm not a gamer. The only complaint I have is the touchpad has a few too many bells and whistles I have yet to figure out be careful where you let your fingers wander! I use an external mouse so that's not big a deal most of the time. Also still trying to figure out Win 8 but that's not Toshiba's fault. I just hit the App key and click on the Desktop tile to get back to the land of familiarity.

ThinkPad has a reputation for building a very rugged portable machine. I've had four of them and each one is quite a bit more technically advanced than the previous one. This one has the i7 chip as opposed to the i5. I honestly can't describe why one is better but this machine is noticeably much faster than any previous computer I've ever had. I do a lot of financial stuff and use eSignal software and VectorVest and TDAmeritrade programs, all on this computer, plus I have a large HP monitor. It handles it all plus e-mail junk, downloaded movies vis Netflix, and all the other stuff one does on a computer. This machine is simply very capable and fast. It runs Windows 7 Professional 64-bit flawlessly. The case is simply black, square, is larger than most laptops (but alas, it does much more), is heavier than most, but again of all laptop computers I've seen and used, this one is hard to beat. The visuals are stunning when I use it as a portable. My next computer will have a solid state drive because lets face it, the weakest unit in a computer is the hard drive the mechanical stuff so any time you can do away with the least reliable part in a computer, you do it, right? I also have a MacBook Pro, and an iPad but Mac does not have the capability of running sophisticated financial software so the PC format was a must; this Lenovo T510 will make you sit up and take notice!

Wanted a 13.3" laptop, something smaller than my 17.3" Toshiba and larger than my Acer Netbook. The 17.3 is too big for travel and netbook has several limitations and requires external drives. Started looking for a reasonable 13.3" but found this HP dv5-2135 DX midsize unit is slightly larger (.5" wider) than a 13.3" and had everything I was looking for, so I ordered it.

When it arrived my first impression was it was physically larger than I thought and I too at first had a hard time with the sensative touchpad. But was soon relieved when I compared it side by side with the 13.3" and I have aclimated to using the touchpad, yes it is different from those used in the past. Learned to use only one finger as the buttons are part of the pad. The screen is very bright which is good for persons of a certain age, ha ha. Contrary to some others comments, I really like the keyboard it has good key spacing for my large fingers, is positive to the touch and I very seldom missed keystrokes compared to the high dollar Toshiba! The wiFi has been flawless so I can't understand why someone complained unless they had a lemon.

Now, was this the perfect laptop? Has anyone ever found the perfect laptop? In my application it's as perfect as it get's and I would highly reccomend it.

If I didn't have the learning curve with the touchpad I'd give it five stars, I gave it four, as there is no way to give it 4.5 which is where I think it belongs.

omg. this is a great computer. the screen is bright. the speed is fantastic. the wifi is good. check your own router. all i can say is that it is a very good laptop. there are some things u need to know about this laptop. the battery lasts about 2 hours. the mouse is sensitive but thats good as u do not need to press hard to operate it. the sound is a little soft hence a reason for headphones jack. the keyboard is fine. it's called an island style keyboard.

so to sum it up very good laptop. have it about a 10 months. got it for university. works great for all my projects and etc. the entertainment aspect is great also.

games can work.

Nice screen, keys are well spaced so if you have larger hands this is just the ticket. The built in mouse is jumpy and just a pain. Buy this computer and plan on getting a usb mouse soon thereafter...

Overall laptop build and performance is good.

But there are two major issues because of that it becomes a no buy

1. It makes too much noise and heats up very fast.

2. Audio output is not audible with all the noise process makes.

This can't be called an entertainment laptop if you can't even hear a thing in it.

The only downside is the battery life is short. Get a laptop cooler if you plan on gaming. The laptop gets warm if your gaming while charging. I use it for gaming. Fast, clear graphics...excellent little computer. Even has a 10 key which I like, being it is a small computer i was surprised at how easy the keyboard/10 key was to use. Built in web cam. DVD/CD. USB ports on the right side. I would recommend this to a friend.

This laptop is Hot, Hot, Hot. Barely any underside vents, no removeable access panels on bottom to access hd etc, there is one tiny panel tho to add memory. cheap, flimsy plastic throughout. POOR audio. cheap keyboard. the one saving grace-a matte screen.

The day I received this computer the monitor wouldn't turn on. I called Samsung and explained the situation. Instead of replacing as they should have, the required me to go through their repair process. The problem persisted. Every couple months the montior quits working and I have to send it in for repair. This is a HUGE inconvenience. On this last repair, they identified water damage which I admitted to that affected the arrow keys. I didn't care about getting that fixed. Explained that I was responsible for the arrow keys not working and was fine with that but I needed the monitor repaired (again). However, they now say my warranty is deemed void. Six months after purchasing this computer it is completely unuseable and they are unwilling to fix it. I've been very disappointed by customer service as well as the computer itself. I'll never buy another Samsung.

Only problem is the location of HD memory card reader slot. It is in the front but basically underneath computer. I have to pick computer up to find it and hard to remove a card. If you take a lot of pictures and use HD memory cards you might be aggravated a little. ASUS should move the slot to the side. may just get a card reader to fix this..

The ONLY complaint I have about this computer actually has nothing to do with the PC itself, at all. The operating system that came pre-installed is, unfortunately, Windows 8. While there are a lot of mixed feelings about the OS, I am settling the score on this end and letting you all know the facts: the laptop is GREAT, the operating system bytes. However, aside from the assault from a handful of minor annoyances, your overall experience will likely be pleasing. I bought this particular laptop for various reasons, most notably for online schooling. However, I DID take some extra time to review the processor and factory graphics for this machine and I am overly satisfied with the result(s). This is a very well-rounded machine at a very generous and affordable price. This review comes from personal experience and from the collective opinion of various friends and cohorts that have had the chance to sit down and explore this laptop with me. I hope this review helps to lighten the load of the decision for all of you!

Bought this at Best Buy after returning a less-than-ideal Asus. This laptop is capable of handling multiple tasks, including big programs, at once. It's fast, it works, it has a number pad; no complaints. Windows 8 sucks, but you can't buy a new laptop without it.

I bought this laptop for school and light gaming. As this isn't a gaming laptop per se, it does play the higher end games just fine. It took a while for me to get used to Windows 8. I installed Windows 7 as dual boot OS and it was flawless. I also set up my home network and remote desktop and again, no complaints. This machine successfully linked to my blu ray surround, xbox, 3 desk top pc's and even my TV! Great product!! Highly recommended!

I got this laptop recently, why the 5 stars? Because its Functional for my needs. Most Important Specs are:-

Windows 7 Home premium, AMD Athlon Dual-Core 2.30GHz,4.00Gb RAM,320 GB Hard Drive,4.1 Overall windows Experience Index. This is NOT a laptop for Gamers, or persons who want to run applications like AutoCAD, ARCGIS, or Adobe Photoshop, Why? because the processor is a Dual-Core its wayyyy behind in today's terms. This is a great laptop for young children, university students (those who are serious about schoolwork and dont play games like HALO,Dragon Age etc. lol) I use it for checking my emails on the go, and for typing reports and my occasional chess game. Other specs are listed on this page (scroll up). It has a nice patterned finish and comes with built-in wi-fi and a dvd burner. I will update further as i monitor the performance and durability of this laptop.

**UPDATE** 22nd June 2011

I have decided to give a 3 month update. The laptop still continues to perform well. No noticeable cracks (as yet) on chassis as is customed with SOME DELL laptops especially around the corners (my DELL Inspiron 6400 has cracks). Yes it has no HDMI,no bluetooth a downer but not critical features to me. Some reviewers have misconceived my opening statements, I never said you cannot play games on this laptop, I'm saying that given the laptop hardware specifications certain applications (listed above) and games (not going to list too numerous) will either not run or run with slow frame rates especially newer titles.I use Autocad and ArcGis and when working on rendering 3D drawings (AutoCAD) or Queries for Analysis (ArcGIS) the laptop freezes but these are huge files.Your experience may vary depends on your type of usage.

One commenter made the point about the memory, its stated that the laptop comes with 4 GB installed DDR3 RAM (1333 MHz, 2 DIMM slots). Yes it comes with 4GB, however in the BIOS the frequency of the memory is 1066Mhz. Now some might say that this can be changed by doing this or by doing that, that's not the point (it cannot be changed by the way the fields are read-only) its advertised as 1333 it should come that way. Keyboard shows no signs of fading but sometimes i get delayed keystrokes could be software related though.

In summary still a good buy (I paid 399.99),I have no regrets with this purchase SO FAR.

I bought this laptop on sale recently, and so far, I have no real complaints. Set up was simple and fast, and it connected right away to my WiFi. It's obviously not a gaming machine, but I installed some of my favorite (though not current) games (Portal, Half-Life 2: Episode 1 and 2), and they run just fine. Overall, it works as advertised, and for the price, I don't have any serious complaints.

The "3D" finish might not appeal to everyone, but I like it. It hides fingerprints very well, and it plays with light in a nifty way.

I haven't had any reason to use the webcam, but did test it to make sure it works. It's low-res, but good enough for basic things like chatting.

The software dock in Windows is a nice touch.

Pros: a nice bright display (I actually had to turn it down a bit), a roomy keyboard (I consider the lack of a number keypad a definite plus), and Windows 7 64-bit Home runs very fast.

Cons: no HDMI port (it has VGA), plastic case feels a bit flimsy, and the speakers are rather tinny. These cons are minor, in my opinion. Bloatware wasn't too much of a problem, either (I uninstalled only a few things). I do wish the memory card reader included CompactFlash for my older DSLR camera, but that's just a personal preference. Most devices don't use this type of memory card anymore.

Other notes: all the various ports are on the left side of the machine (one of the USB ports is at the very front of that side, which might get in the way for some), the DVD drive on the right, the memory card reader on the front, and nothing but the battery compartment on the back.

Best Deals for Dell Inspiron M5030 2800B3D 15.6-Inch Laptop (3D Black)

Good value at $399 my sale price. I found it fast but heavy and upgradable. The "3D" finish is not attractive to me but will prevent fingerprints. I needed this laptop to run VMs for demos and development and this was in my price range. I found that the memory upgrade to 6GB was no problem($43) and keyboard removes ok for the memory access. Windows anytime upgrade got it to Windows 7 Pro for $89. Right now it is running an XP machine in virtual-pc and a 2008 server in virtualbox but having trouble running both at same time. The dvd writter works great and 3 USB 2.0 ports are handy. The wireless network is g and wired is 10/100 not 1000. I think networking could be better and the other external port is only vga should maybe be hdmi

Honest reviews on Dell Inspiron M5030 2800B3D 15.6-Inch Laptop (3D Black)

After ten days or so of using this computer I have not encountered any problems with it. This is my first laptop but my fourth Dell computer so I am not anticipating any major problems. Setup was a breeze and I especially liked the way it found my existing router so I can use wireless internet. Just make sure you have your routers "security key" available to complete that part of the setup. Now I am able to sit in my backyard and be online at the same time which was the reason I purchased this particular laptop. I have very nice Dell desktop so I did not need a top of the line laptop loaded with bells and whistles and lots of great features. If that is what you are in need of then I suggest you buy something else. This machine makes a great secondary computer and really for the price you can't expect it to be much more. Three USB ports is sufficient for me, a Cd/dvd burner that so far is working very well. The three in one card reader is also a nice feature. Now as far as the battery goes it charges up pretty fast but the charge does not last that long which I guess applies to most laptops. Sound quality is not so good, I mean if you're looking to play music you might want to invest in a pair of speakers to hook up to the front audio port. Picture quality seems just fine to me, brilliant and sharp and easy on the eyes. There is no HDMI connection but does anyone really connect their computers to a television? As far as the pattern on the case (small circles) that I have seen some other reviewers not so happy with I don't think it's any big deal. I'm just happy this computer is working as nice as it is so far. It starts right up and loads up quickly every time I turn it on. As for preloaded applications/programs, you really don't get much. There are the usual free games that we are all familiar with in Windows and some others that I'm pretty sure you have to pay for to play most of them on line. There is also a popular CD burner program (won't mention the name) that if you really want to use then you must upgrade to the premium version and that is going to cost you. So basically it's useless. For me, for my needs this was money well spent for a secondary computer. I did not expect to get all that much for the price but what I did get was a computer that works and so far that I am really enjoying.

One Year Later: After using this laptop for one full year I still feel it's worth the price for a good secondary computer. In my case as I've already mentioned I needed one to take outside with me. I have had absolutely no problems with this laptop as far as performance goes but of course there is a reason for me to update my review. The one and only reason I'm updating this review is because of the battery life. To put it as nicely as I am allowed, it stinks! The battery life just stinks! On a full charge I'm lucky to get two full hours from it. Sure I can tone down the brightness to get longer battery usage but who wants to look at a dull, dark screen? Now perhaps the battery that came with the laptop wasn't very good to begin with, I have no idea of knowing that. So this morning I am considering purchasing the replacement battery sold by Amazon thinking maybe I will get longer battery life. I just don't know if I want to risk spending over thirty dollars on a new battery only to find out it did not solve the problem. The idea of a laptop is to be able to take it with you, into the back yard for instance. Less then two hours on a full charge just does not work for me and I'm not about to start dragging extension cords out the window. So once again this is a nice laptop as far as performance goes and hopefully anyone thinking of purchasing it will receive a better battery with it than I did. Unless of course all of the batteries that come with this computer stink!

I am floored to read all the reviews on this computer stating motherboard failure. My computer is 18 months old and won't turn on. The screen is black and then a series of 7 beeps follows. After much time on the phone with Dell I've discovered it is the motherboard and a repair would cost over $400. I am just one of many many people having the same issue. Shame on you Dell for no addressing this issue and making it right for all your customers. There needs to be recall on this model due to so many having problems with the motherboard. So here I am about to shell out come $$$ on another laptop. Buyer beware!

I give the Series 3 four stars, minus 1 for the crappy touchpad sensitivity. See Con comment below.

Pros:

Xlnt display resolution

Aesthetically appealing to the eye; cover is brushed 'ribbed' aluminum with 2" black band at rear.

Wide keys, short pressure, positive feel

Full numbers keypad on right

Single screw holds cover to memory and HDD, makes for easy swap out

No dumb WiFi on/off switch front panel, prevents accidentally switching off connection

A full pound lighter than Dell

Strong solid looking hinges

i5-3210M Ivy Bridge, HD4000 controller works as designed

3MB L3 cache

CON: The super sensitive touchpad.

**First thing first; Use the touchpad to set screen size, then go to ctrl panel, Synaptics Touchpad to disable BOTH one-finger and multi-finger gestures. If you don;t this is what you can expect:

1. Sensitivity -horizontal AND vertical scrolling is at the next to last slowest speed.

2. If the left palm is within 1/8-1/4" proximity of the touchpad, the touchpad shrinks or enlarges your screen on its own. Tapping an resetting screen size constantly is annoying. Mostly dues to far left placement of the pad, not centered.

3. Email composes start @ 14+ font then shrinks to 10 and back and forth and back and forth all over the place. When composing the font size appears normal. When the display size changes the fonts do to but they never reset to the last display. Major bug.

More CONS:

1. Annoying bloatware

2. Power cord on left, I prefer right

3. No keyboard backlite

4. OK Samsung memory, 1x4GB & 1x2GB, latency 11-11-11-28. This was swapped for new 2x4Gb sticks

5. Big hunky/clunky 750GB SATA HDD. This was swapped for an SSD. Boot time is now 9 seconds. HDD being used as an external drive

6. Weak/low L1 & L2 cache [256kb]

7. Samsung online Chat Support is h-o-r-r-i-b-l-e. They're absolutely brainless and will waste your time. With a rating of 1 to 10, I generously give them a -10 [minus ten]. Do your own troubleshooting.

8. Battery life claim is up to 6.3 hrs. Even at the lowest setting the best I can get is 4.5 hrs, as indicted in the notification bar.

Don't forget to check the update page. The i5-3210M is fast for a tier 2 CPU, better than other i5's as it does turbo from 2.6 to 3.1GHZ.

The Atheros wireless card that came installed in this laptop was defective and wouldn't hold a connection no matter what network it was connected to. I contacted Samsung and they confirmed that it seemed to be a hardware issue. I returned it and got a replacement laptop. Same issue. I did some research and these cards are just bad. It's a shame because otherwise, the computer is great, but trying to deal with the all the internet issues and hardware problems were beyond frustrating. Terrible experience.

This laptop is awesome!!! I am a full time student and use it primarily for school, not gaming. It does have an integrated HD graphics card which gives an excellent graphic performance for watching videos or just browsing the web. The i5 processor accompanied with 6GB of RAM makes this laptop super-fast. Out of the box the Windows Experience Index rates this laptop at a 5.7. You can check you WEI by going into the Computer>System Properties> Windows Experience Index. It rates a 5.7 because of the Graphics card, the processor and RAM rate at 7.1 and 7.4 respectfully and the hard drive rates at 5.9. This computer has room for improvements if you want make some upgrades, upgrading the RAM to 8GB and swapping out the hard drive for a solid state will make this thing ridiculous and raise the index on it considerably, especially if you are using for the same thing that I am which is mostly school work and emails.

I have always hated using touchpads on laptops until I started using the touchpad on this one. The pad is large and the so are the buttons, the pad also lets you do multi finger gestures. You can pinch to zoom, two fingers lets you scroll up and down, and three fingers lets you navigate forward and backward. You also have the ability to turn off the touchpad altogether by holding down the Fn key and hitting F5. There are many other features to this laptop that it makes it great like the sleep function when you close the laptop. The laptop is sturdy and is of good design, esthetically it looks great and the sound from the speakers is loud and clear. The boot time is under a minute, I have never timed it but it is significantly faster than my old computer. It also runs cool so no need for a cool pad.

Aside from all the positive things that I have to say about the laptop there is a few negative. I have experienced some malfunction when browsing with Facebook. Sometimes when I try to navigate to Facebook the browser throws up an error and I cannot logon. This could be a problem with Facebook or the browser that I am using, either way the problem is only intermittent and is not too much of an inconvenience. I have also on occasion heard when opening a file or a link that plays audio the speakers will make small pop before playing. These are all problems that I have yet to address but I think are very fixable. All in all this is an excellent laptop for the price and is very versatile and sturdy enough to last for several years. I give it 4.5 out of 5!

Purchased this Samsung Laptop (NEW) as a Christmas gift from "City Electronic" thru Amazon.com. AVOID BUYING FROM THE THIS SELLER.... Here is why. When this laptop arrived, it started to BLUESCREEN from the beginning..having some knowledge of Windows machines..I ran a hardware check and found that the Ram or memory was defective. I immediately contacted the seller and ask for a refund or exchange...the seller told me to contact Samsung and refuse to take it back...called Amazon and filed a complaint...because third party sellers must have a 30 day return or exchange policy ...but that did not matter, because the seller was still allowed to sell the same new Laptop thru Amazon.com...Called Samsung and was told mail it to them at my expense and it wound take 3-4 weeks for it to be repaired...later I purchased ram for $42.18 and asked the seller to pay for that ( he did) later after seeing the claim...I swapped out the ram and the laptop worked perfectly (note) the door to the ram and hard drive...is made of very cheap plastic, has to be bent into place for it to fit...I did buy a 3 year SquareTrade warranty for this laptop...did not think that that I should be having to use it 7 days after a new purchased that comes with factory warranty... the seller and Amazon.com let me down....Samsung just has slow and bad customer service...LIKE MOST BIG COMPANIES...bigger is not better. look closely at the seller's return policy before buying from them....good customer service is not important most companies...their bottom line seems to be more profit.

Pros:

Fast!

I7 processor

Sleek metal design

Matte 1080p screen

Decent webcam

Backlit keyboard with 2 different levels.

Stylish

Cons:

Runs a bit hot

Touchpad is a disaster

Fingerprint magnet(impossible to remove them too)

The ultrabay GPU's are still not on the market.

Slow 5400 rpm hdd(really is the only cause for slowdown on this laptop)

Mine is the 2.2 GHz with dual graphics card (no optical drive). Performance is excellent in spite of 5400 revolutions per minute drive. It is not actually one terabyte drive but ~950 gigabytes, plus the 24 gigabytes of solid state drive (hybrid?).

Opens programs quickly and less prone to poor multitasking as the hardware and system much improved over the tech from 2002 and 2007 that always dragged on when doing anything moderately intensive. However, when the disk becomes 10% fragmented, it slows down considerably, but this may be due to the 5400 RPM. It does use less battery and load on the hardware compared to 7200 RPM, but I am a bit surprised that Lenovo (still?) has no SSD-only options at the time.

A few problems with the hardware (not software), the webcam is horrible. Nothing ever comes out clearly. Extremely blotchy like a Nintendo DS, I mean, the DS 3D one I have is the worst of all cameras (except for the very first smartphones?). You cannot get good sound with the internal microphones, and software actually records in mono; not stereo. Adobe Audition does not record in stereo. This must be a bogus feature to believe you into recording stereo, as I have an ASUS tablet with stereo microphones, and its applications record in mono. This is a stupid thing companies do. What is nice is to have a Blue Yeti Pro USB microphone that actually does what it says it does, but does cost quite a bit.

Pretty good machine, but for recording audio and video work, this laptop is the last thing you want. Most people use their digital cameras anymore and a USB microphone, so this is proof that the internal cam/mic on a laptop is a gimmick.

Recommended for those who want good gaming and heavy graphic design work. However, Adobe CC works much better on it than does CS6. Illustrator is really slow compared to the latest version. Always upgrade, if you can afford it. (Disclaimer: Do your research before 'just upgrading,' as sometimes upgrades have problems and are a waste of money. I have gone through this a lot in life!)

Thank you.

Found out the hard way being that this laptop is opened and "modified" by the company selling it, the Lenovo Factory Warranty is VOIDED. So you are really taking your chances here buying a laptop that someone opened up and changed both the hard drive and memory, as you'll be SOL if it breaks down the road, as Lenovo will receive the laptop and just return it back to you saying your warranty is void because it's been opened and modified.

Asus has made a fantastic product at a great price. I previously owned an Eeepc 900 and loved it for about five years. I learned to use linux with it, I fell in love with Ubuntu using it and really got hooked on having a computer smaller than a pad of paper. I was worried that the Tablet would end Netbooks for good and hated the idea of a crummy throw away operating system made for cell phones, and incapatibility with windows. Then I heard Asus was coming out with this next-Gen netbook and I was excited. I have had it for a while now and feel it deserves a review. I Love It! It is so fast for its size and has tons of space. I run my website off of it and use it for writing papers, editing photos, watching movies and basic email/internet use.

Before I begin I will provide a little more information about the product that should be given in the description.

The Windows Experience Index is 3.7. The individual ratings are as follows.

Processor 3.7

RAM 5.6

Graphics 4.3

Gaming Graphics 5.8

Primary hard Disk 5.6

The 320 GB HDD is partitioned into two partitions. One 99.9GB and the other 183GB. Not really sure why they did that but not really a negative.

The Netbook also comes with a TON of bloatware. Tons of ASUS apps such as a top dock, a special media sharing app, a BIOS updater, E-CAM (adding effects to the webcam) and a trial of TrendMicro AntiVirus. There might of been more that I forgot because I uninstalled most of them as soon as the device booted up.

Interestingly it also has a built in OS that you can quickly boot into by pushing the button next to the WiFi button. Good for quickly checking something on the internet.

The Netbook as a whole is very solid. The Keyboard is a little cramped but not bad seeing as it is a 11" screen. The backlight is very bright and crisp. The tracpad is a little over sensitive out of the box for my liking and the uni-button on the tracpad takes time getting used to.

The webcam is the usual low quality webcam but has a physical switch that blocks the camera and also a digital zoom button along with a on light for the paranoid.

Under the tracpad there is a on light, charging light, HDD light, WiFi light, and a caps lock light.

It has a app for sending media over WiFi to other devices but I don't have a device that supports it to test it out on.

Summery:

Good Excelent battery life (5+ hours of actual use), Decent keyboard, great performance for the price, built in operating system

Bad Amount of bloatware

Weird Partitioning of HDD.

I will update this review is anything breaks or goes wrong.

Looking for a small PC..? If you have money I would suggest you get a Mac book, If not... maybe consider this one under $440. Happy with my purchased! So far.. One of the top netbooks that you can get under 12 inches for 2012. 4G Ram and 320 Hard Drive, pretty good for the size. This is perfect to people who loves to travel..like me. I don't want to bring my heavy laptop with me when I travel. Thin and light 3.2 lbs and faster than other netbooks who only have 1G or 2G RAM. So far my only complaint is the battery, it said on the box up to 7 hrs.. mine only last 4 1/2 or 5hrs at times on hybrid mode. Well no biggie...that's good enough for me thats a lot. I mean, battery consumption also depends on the task you are doing on the computer. Well if you are comparing this to Acer aspire one 722, Just to let you know, I bought the acer aspire one 722 before this one which has exactly the same specs but lasted only 15days, Gladly returned it..the power just did not turn on again. Lemon.. Do not get acer. This one is better.

I wanted hardware that was this small cheap and packed. I needed high specs like 4Gig ram and decent processor. I didn't want to have to pay for windows since it gets flushed when I get it anyway but the general public hasn't accepted that M$ is on its was to being phased out anyway. Other that that all the hardware works great with Ubuntu and my requirements. Free shipping was fast and reliable. First week but running strong and looks slick too. I respect ASUS for kicking my ACER habit. I will be buying ASUS for my work horse Desktop now. I recommend this to anyone looking for a portable mobile with good specs and especially to open source computer nerds who could appreciate this piece of machinery. :D

We got this for my wife to use while we travel, paid a little under $500 with software and a padded sleeve included. It was the only computer we could find that had decent speed & 4 gigs of RAM, was ultra portable that cost less than $800. We could have gotten a tablet but she felt the storage and ports of a real computer would be more useful. It's very compact and is surprisingly fast -with the 1.6 dual-core AMD chip it runs 64-bit Windows 7 no problem. The display screen is nicer (although much smaller) than the one on my $1100 Thinkpad. I thought the smaller 11.6" screen would bother me but it's not bad at all. It remains to be seen how well it will hold up while traveling throughout SE Asia for months on end, but I'm hopeful.

I very rarely review items on Amazon, despite being a regular shopper, but the Acer Aspire V7-582PG-6421 is such a stunning example of a Windows laptop "done right" that I just had to leave a comment or two. The preceding review by Gc is excellent and covers almost all of the bases. My point in doing this review is to highlight the "extras" you get with the Acer that I have not found on ANY laptops other than the MacBook Pro. One correction to Gc's review, however the lid is not aluminum, but brushed surface plastic. I checked this directly with Acer, and you can tap the cover with a fingernail and hear it yourself BUT it does not do justice to just say that it is plastic, because it is structurally sound and very good looking. Now, for the "goodies" -

1. The screen is spectacular. I've owned a retina MBPro, and it is nearly that good (glossy though). As Gc said, you can truly review two documents side by side on the screen without a magnifying glass.

2. The "Acer connector" is a displayport connector I am running my WQHD 2560x1440 monitor on it now. It will support the internal screen (1920x1080), the displayport (2560x1440), and a 1920x1080 HDMI monitor, all at the same time.

3. Battery Life: AWESOME. The Haswell 4200U went four hours last night on web surfing, Word editing, and document viewing (no media running) and still had 67% battery left (7:42 estimated remaining time). After being put into sleep mode, seven hours later it still showed 66% battery left.

4. Upgradeable: remove the army of screws (15-18) from the base plate, and you can go up to 12GB ram (replacing the 4GB module with an 8GB module); replace the HDD with a SATA III SSD up to 1TB; AND replace the mSATA with up to a 512GB SSD. My solution was to upgrade to a 256GB mSATA for the OS and programs, and leave the 1TB HDD for file storage the system now screams when loading software and files.

5. Built in Gigabit Ethernet enough said.

6. NVidia GT720M with 2GB ram not a gaming rig, but far from shabby, and pretty rare to get in this form factor on a Windows rig already sporting HD4400 graphics.

7. The touch screen is as smooth operating as a tablet, and you will quickly find that it is a legitimate "third" interface to Windows 8 scrolling, zooming, selecting onscreen elements is very natural in addition to the keyboard and trackpad DON'T LET ANYONE LIE TO YOU ABOUT GORILLA ARMS it is a short 4" reach from the keyboard.

8. Keyboard the key press is shallow, but it is outstanding to have the numeric keypad in this form factor.

Let's talk about form factor for a minute. This year I have tried nearly everything including the awesome MacBook Air 13" (8GB/512GB max rig), and a MacBook Pro 15" (16GB/512GB max rig) the Acer is no aluminum work of art like those two, but from a confirmed Windows user perspective, this is the BEST laptop rig of them all. A little larger and heavier than the Pro (less than 1/2" longer/wider; 0.08" thicker; and 0.35lb ) but the internals are equal to or superior; expandability is only up to your imagination; and the screen, although not retina, is FAR superior to MacBook Air, and not far from the quality of the Retina Pro. ALL FOR $900 LESS than the Air, and $1700 LESS than the MacBook Pro.

That's why I say it is the best bargain going in a full feature, desktop replacement laptop.

Acer have always been on my s*** list when it comes to laptops, but the Aspire V7 have changed all that. I have been using this laptop for a good two weeks and it seems very solid so far. When I heard years back that Acer was going to be more like Apple, I never thought that could happen, but boy was I wrong. The Aspire V7 offers a lot, but sacrifices very little.

Built quality. The top is solid brush aluminum, darker compared to the Macbook Pros, a nicer color in my opinion. The lid is also built with aluminum. The bottom is matted plastic with strong rubber grips that raises enough for the speakers to emanate. It will not burn your lap or get very cold like aluminum. The LCD lid feels like a giant tablet incased with aluminum with strong glass. There is no ugly frames on it, the entirely screen is smooth glass. The trackpad is indeed huge and also made out of aluminum. The keyboard is nicely spread out with more than enough room for a number pad. Obviously there is no flex because of the aluminum. The keys are very low, it's not so bad, but something to get used to. It has one setting keyboard light which should be enough. The hinges are quite sturdy. If you push the screen, the entire laptop will tip over before the screen start bending back.

Controls. I don't have any problem typing on the keyboard. You might have to get use to pressing these short keys, but I don't have any problems typing this review on it. The keys are very quiet, and the click-pad is not too loud either, sounds like rubber tapping on wood. You don't have to worry about the keys being cramped, in fact, it is very spread out. I find myself stretching my fingers to reach the keys when playing games, but works great for typing text. The number-pad is very handy to have as well. This laptop is not as sharp as other ultrabooks near the wrist area, so doesn't feel like my wrist is getting "cut" when I'm typing. The screen is as responsive as the trackpad. The touchscreen may not seem useful at first, but it comes in handy when using the Start Menu applications, zooming, dragging folder, and selecting text when you don't have a mouse. With Windows 8.1 coming soon, the touchscreen feature may become even more useful. My one complaint is that the trackpad has a rough aluminum feel to it, in other words, it is not smooth. The roughness feels weird. Unlike the laptop's body the trackpad aluminum feels unpolished, a bit of random roughness. This problem can easily be solved by putting a custom screen protector on it, which I did and now it is perfectly smooth and just as responsive. You may also want to make some adjustments so it can ignore your palm better since this can get somewhat annoying.

The performance on this laptop is better than I expected. Haswell as I expect, is fast, but Haswell is not about being faster than Ivy Bridge, even though it is somewhat. It is about efficiently. The Aspire v7 when on load only used about 30W, while my Macbook Air 2012 (Ivy Bridge) was at 45W on idle. And we are talking about a 15.6 inch FHD touchscreen with keyboard lights on compared to a 13 incher. For comparison purpose, my PC desktop is about 180-300W, idle and load respectively. The Aspire v7 on non-intensive applications will only use 20w or less. When you are running games on the Aspire v7 using the Geforce card, it will max out at 60W, or 35W using the Intel HD 4400. However, gaming is a big impact on the battery life as usual. If you are just doing simple task, typing, browsing, music, etc. it will last you 6.5 hours as advertised. Playing games with everything else on will drop it to 2-2.5 hours. Games run fast though. I can max out on Portal 2 and still get 30+ fps. Starcraft 2 will run perfectly smooth near max settings as well. You will rarely feel this laptop getting hot even when playing games because the hottest area is at the upper-right. It usually doesn't get that hot anyways and the fan noise is only slightly noticeable when running 3D games.

The 1TB hard drive seems to boot Windows 8 very fast due to the SSD cache, but it has problems multi-tasking so don't expect to copy, and run from too many files at once otherwise the laptop will stall. Remember, the actual hard drive is still a 5400k rpm which will help with battery life, but not with loading speed. I suggest disabling Windows auto updates for installation. Otherwise, under normal usage, there's really no problem if any. As you know 1TB is a lot of space. I have installed tons of games and applications, and loaded in hundreds of movies and shows while still not worrying about downloading or working with large files. I haven't even bother doing any clean up yet. In short, you will always feel like there is an "unlimited" amount of space to work with and that you will "never" run out of space, something that is rare on a laptop.

Okay what about sound? Well, it really exceeded my expectation. The v7 has a dedicated Dolby Home Theater compliant sound card. Pair this up with DFX Audio Enhancer software, and you will be amaze. It sounds better than my iPhone, onboard sound card on my desktop, and Macbooks as well. This is an amazing sound card that they stuck inside the v7. It makes a huge difference in sound quality. The speakers' sound doesn't just come out straight at you, it fills the area where you sit. This makes it great for music and clear for watching movies. The speakers are very good for a laptop of this size, but it sounds even better when I use my ath-m50 headphones.

The screen quality has excellent color at 1080p resolution. It looks really sharp, and 15.6 inch is big enough so that you can see text in 1080p with enough screen space to view two documents at once. I had a 13.3 inch laptop with 1080p and the text was way too small, 15.6 inch is the sweet-spot. As for the color, it rivals any iPad, tablet, or smartphone. As for the view angle, it is as good as any IPS display. I assume the v7 must have an IPS display since it looks so good. The brightness can go really high too, but while indoors, 0 level brightness is enough for me, I go 2-3 when playing games or doing graphical works, just to bring out the colors more. By the way, the screen is good enough for Photoshop work.

Overall, it easily deserves 5-stars. I am currently using it as my main computer.

PROS:

Fast for applications and 3D games

Very power efficient

Design Elegant, solid, great materials, slim, lightweight (for a 15.6 inch)

Screen looks great visually and design

Keyboard lights

1TB is a lot of space

Sound quality

CONS:

Trackpad must be tweak to ignore your palm, but still not perfect, still an unavoidable problem.

Hard drive can get slow (consider SSD upgrade when price drops).

Front camera (worst than my 1st generation Macbook)

UPDATE: I opened up the laptop. It is sealed by many standard size + head screws. It does NOT look like warranty can be voided by opening the bottom. From there you can upgrade the memory and hard drive. The hard drive is a WD Blue 2.5in WD10SPCX. It is a little slimmer than most 2.5in drives, but I have check that most 2.5 SSD have the same dimension, but I do not plan on upgrading until the prices for SSD drops more. There is also a separate, 24GB Kingston mSATA SSD drive which is upgradable. That's right, this laptop has two upgradable hard drives!

I purchased this laptop about a year ago online. The laptop had decent specs and I planned on using it for (light) gaming and general browsing and school work. At first the laptop seemed good, it performed well and played games like Half-Life 2 at max resolution and medium settings. However, over time the laptop developed severe over-heating issues. At first I thought it was due to faulty video drivers so switched out my video drivers a few times and that didn't help at all. Eventually I Googled, "dv2845se heating issues", and found forums rife with complaints about their dv2845se laptops running extremely hot.

It turns out that the way the gpu's thermal foam that is applied to the gpu deteriorates over time and eventually can even heat up enough to cause the gpu unit to de-solder itself off of the motherboard causing many more problems in the process. Fortunately I was able to combat the issue somewhat by installing Windows 7 and altering the performance settings to "Power Saver" which allowed the laptop's gpu to idle at around 67c, which is still pretty hot but not hot enough to do any damage as long as I don't do anything graphics intensive (no more 3D games for me now). Recently I tried applying some thermal paste to the gpu, but that didn't help the issue at all and in fact made it run hotter then before.

The thing that really upsets me about this laptop though, is the fact that HP never extended the warranty of these laptops or issued a recall even though this is a very prevalent and well known issue with this model. I can say with certitude that I will never buy an HP laptop again.

This computer worked fine until it didn't! After buying this computer to more or less replace my desktop which took up too much space for the minimal amount of usage it received, I was very upset to find it simply wouldn't turn on after less than 2 yrs of very light usage. Although it is a laptop, it essentially stayed at my desk as I used my netbook to travel with me back and forth to work. I was even more upset to find that there are a lot of people out there with the same complaint, and HP refuses to recognize the issue and take care of it. I have personally purchased 8 laptops/netbooks over the last 10 years and advised many friends and family members on their purchases. I guess I will now be purchasing #9 to replace my HP Special Edition paper weight! I can guarantee you (which is more than HP will do!) that I will not be purchasing another HP product again... nor will any of my friends, family or workmates if I can help it.

I've had this laptop for a little over three years and it's run pretty well with the exception of the video card frying recently. That being said, however, I ran this laptop nearly non-stop for three years before that happened, took it into the African bush, and hadn't cleaned it out in some time. I bought the HP Pavilion dv2845se about 2.5 years ago. I would NOT recommend it to anyone. After a few months the CD drive broke and after another few months the replacement drive they sent broke as well. Also, if you look up this model on several forums, it has a history of dying after about 2 years. The power button stops working and you can no longer turn on the computer. This is what happened to mine, so eventually I left it on permanently, but eventually it turned off and I haven't been able to turn it on again. HP knows about the problem with the power button and won't offer an solutions unless you want to pay to send it in to them. You might as well spend the money buying a new laptop. HP has really gone downhill in the past couple years. Most people I know who have bought HPs have had problems starting around after the 1yr warranty ends. The over-heating is also a problem mentioned by other reviewers. I'm never buying an HP again.

Cons-

As others have said this laptop has heating issues. I had no problem with it till a couple of months ago when it straight up melted my hard drive. Luckily a good replacement only went for $60. I have found out that I can run it on high performance with a two fan cooling pad and I have no problems. It is frustrating that it has this issue, but it is avoidable.

Another issue is fingerprints. It looks great but anytime anybody touches it you can see it from far away.

Volume controls freeze the laptop temporary.

Pros-

Great specs. I bought this two years ago and was the most powerful laptop I could buy for under $1,000. I recently looked at new laptops and the specs are the same except for a slightly faster processor.

Keyboard is great. The keys are quiet and really user friendly. Everything is spaced out perfectly.

The mouse controls work well.

Three USB ports.

Built in wireless control. Great for presentations.

Its durable. I have had it for two years. In those two years I have taken it to class everyday, watch countless DVD's, hours and hours of videos, and made many presentations. Its still looks good and is solid.
