Had an Acer before and got almost six years out of it and it still runs but I needed more memory but I was very leary about windows 8 so after searching I found this Acer on Amazon with windows 7 on it and I love it. It is fast, runs great and since I've had Vista in the past I really like the design of windows 7. Very happy with my purchase!

I bought this computer from Acer. It arrived and I immediately used it using my Wifi. The connection would connect then cut off, then connect, then cut off, every minute or so. I called Acer. They told me to do a few things including downloading and reinstalling the wifi driver. That didn't fix it. I told the guy that I already did that before I called them. I asked them if they would just send me a new wifi card (internal) that is very easy to replace, but they declined stating that I have to send the computer back for a replacement computer. Before doing so, I decided to do a search on the internet for a fix. I found it. Instead of just re-installing the driver which is what they said to do, I deleted the existing driver and then reinstalled it again. That did the trick. It works perfectly now. If you have this problem, go to their website and download the driver. it is WirelessLAN_Broadcom_5.100.82.112_W7x86W7x64_A

Before you install it, go to your device manager and UNINSTALL the existing driver. THEN install this one. It now works perfectly. If you just reinstall the new driver over the old one, it will not fix the problem, so don't neglect deleting the OLD driver before installing the new one.

Now for the second problem. I know this computer didn't come with great sound capabilities but still, the volume, when set to 100% was VERY low. I made a few adjustments and now the sound is about 50% louder.

The solution:

Have song playing so you can here the difference.

Right click on the speaker icon in the task bar and select Playback Devices (or find it in the Windows Control Panel) The Sound dialog box opens up.

From the Playback tab select the Playback device being used, in my case Speakers Realtek High Definition Audio (marked with a green checkbox) and click the Properties button. A new dialog box Speaker Properties opens up.

On the Enhancements tab make sure "Disable All Sound Effects" and "Immediate Mode" are both UNchecked. Check Loudness Equalization (on my setup all other unchecked) and hit Apply.

Bingo! Sound volume is up a lot, maybe 50%!

For the price, this is an excellent computer. I gave it three stars because Acer should have been able to tell me how to correct the WIFI problem and the sound should not have been set to a LOW maximum volume.

Not all models have these problems, as they use different parts from different vendors when building these, as all computer companies do, but if you have either or both of these issues, the two fixes I gave will fix your problem.

So far so good. This laptop is nothing fancy, but gets the job done for our teen son. He says it plays his new video games without stalling or jerking, which means the integrated video is up to the task (but by no means is this a gaming laptop). The 4 gigs of ram is fine too on Windows 7. But it you need more it IS upgradable. Something that's not easy to find at this price point. Figure everything you need and nothing more for just over 4 bills.

This is my first lap top, I find it comfortable to use, maybe its just me, but the key board seems a little confined but, that may be because I'm not used to a lap top key board, but I'm getting used to it, I have a tendency to hit the cap lock a lot. And move the curser to weird, places. Other than that I love it!

This is the first computer/laptop that was not an H. P. I was out of my comfort zone when I purchased this one. For a short while I had a Samsung Series 3. I like the Acer laptop better than the Samsung laptop. The other thing was the Acers Windows 7 is more user friendly than Samsung Windows 8. This Acer laptop speaker has a really poor sound quality compared to the other computers. This is the only complaint I have. Good Luck.

I've had it for a few weeks and the touchpad is a bit sensitive and I'm just starting to get used to that, but the computer seems pretty fast and nice so far, otherwise. Very thin and lightweight. Happy with my purchase.

I have had this laptop now for several months and can't be happier with it. The style is second to none. It is very similar to the new ultra books, not as thin, close but has everything I wanted and a DVD drive. Plenty of USB drives, has the new 3.0, has an HDMI, I5 and is super fast. The battery is built in and last for hours, I get at least 7.5 hours no problem. Also I really like the fact that this computer does not really get that hot. I have had laptops that just heat up, this one stays cool. The key is one of these new multi-function and works great. The screen looks fantastic as well, put a movie in looks great and the speakers are very good. Overall I am very happy with this computer

This laptop itself is OK. I've had no major problems with the functionality. I do wish it had a different memory setup. It says you can get 6gb of memory in there, but you'd have to find a 6gb chip I think.

The major issue is the trackpad. It is actually so bad that I've wondered if mine is broken or something and might look at returning it. The buttons are integrated into the trackpad... so basically, there aren't any actual buttons. Pretty much the whole trackpad "clicks", and so it determines a right-click, a left-click and a nothing click based on where your fingers are on the pad. But, you often have multiple fingers on the touchpad, so a lot of clicks just don't register because it can't figure out what you're trying to do. Also, the buttons being part of the track pad means that if you don't already have your finger resting on the button area, and you move the cursor to where you want to click, and then try to click the button area, the cursor will often move as it registers you setting your hand on the button area as movement. Sure, it's not much, but it's enough that it will slide the cursor just off of links and stuff very very annoying.

For some other comments... just a few things to note:

The function buttons are reversed meaning the laptop options are there, and you have to hold the function key to make them the actual F1-12 buttons. This is handy as long as you don't use the F keys. I actually do use them sometimes, so I found this kind of annoying. I can't just hit alt-F4 to close windows anymore, for example.

There are no independent "Home" and "End" buttons. Again, you have to hold the function key. I find this annoying, but again, I get that not everybody uses those.

A last small design thing... The wrist-wrest isn't very big. If you're looking for a 14 inch laptop, this isn't really it... this is a 13 inch laptop with a 14 inch screen. Again, that might be what you want. But, know that this has the keyboard, and size of a 13 inch. My hands are bigger, and I find the wrist-wrest and keyboard to both be a little small.

i ordered this but had to return as there was a problem with the BIOS. Amazon allowed me to return it for free and i ordered another.

The new one is working just fine and is amazingly convenient in size and extremely attractive.

Only problem is that the bluetooth doesnt work even though i uninstalled the driver and downloaded and installed it again. Hopefully it'll work sometime.

This laptop doesnt come with an external battery and i think that's a huge factor to consider to those who are wishing to buy it.

I've been a gateway user for 7yrs and i've never been let down.

It's small, attractive and sufficient. i5 processor,4 gb ram and usb3.0 are really good specs imo.

Honest reviews on Gateway ID47H07u 14-Inch Laptop (Silver)

I bought this laptop a few weeks ago for $550 and I can't believe how the price has gone considerably up to $700. Now, this $550 is worth every dime as you get 14" screen in a 13 inch body, widi, usb 3.0, dvd drive and i5! It certainly was the cheapest out there at that time so I just had to grab it. The build quality (except for the keyboard) is really great, brushed aluminum so it's not all cheap plastic. The bottom is plastic but the rest is brushed aluminum, so you can't go wrong with that. Also, battery is SUPER, it can last for 8 hours on a single charge. Oh, and the speaker is dolby... And the height is less than 1 inch and weigh less than 5 lbs!

These features are the ones you can only find in the ultraportable (portege, folio, u400). I also have a Folio 13 btw which is hands on the best ultraportable out there for the price of $850.

As to cons, I noticed flex on the keyboard especially on G and H which essentially tells how great is build quality. Nonetheless, there is no flex on the screen. I say this for those who considers Acer Timelinex that has a LOT of flex. I also would have preferred the tiles to be a different color than aluminum and the layout is not attractive. You have to see it for yourself to know what I am talking about.

Other than that, you can't go wrong with this. It's very fast, quick to boot from hibernate, if ever it goes down again to $550, don't think twice and get it.

I've watched several movies on it already and have been listening to music as well. Sounds and looks great. I will be conducting a business very soon on my laptop and can't wait to get started.

Just wanted to mention the swapped Fn and Ctrl keys. Why Lenovo chose this keyboard layout is a mystery, given that all other laptops have Ctrl where you'd expect it in the lower left corner of the keyboard. Users have been complaining for years (just Google "Lenovo Fn Ctrl"), but Lenovo only very recently provided a BIOS option to switch the keys. This means you will press the "Ctrl" key and get the "Fn" function, and vice-versa. So visually confusing but haptically as you're used to.

This may seem like a little thing, but I had a Lenovo with this issue for 9 monhts and I still do Fn+C when I think "Ctrl+C". Unless this will be the only computer you'll mainly use, prepare to get annoyed by this keyboard layout oddity.

I was pleasantly surprised when I got the computer considering the price I paid. This is my first laptop so I'm not the best person to review it since I have no prior experience. But this does everything I need it to do. The features are excellent. One button on/off mousepad, HDMII out, dual core processor, wireless N, dvd multidrive, nice 720 display so my shows look fantastic if I watch them on the laptop instead of with HDMI on my flatscreen. The multigesture touchpad is nice but takes some getting used to. sometimes it's a little touchy. All in all, it seems to be working great. I'm writting the review on it now. My minor complaints are, windows 7 dvd makeer is faulty, it will not let my videos burn in widescreen and I can't get any help why, I don't like where the power button is cause sometimes I pick it up and press the button on accident. Also the speaker is a bit weak but it is just a single laptop speaker, I don't know how strong you can really make them, but it's fine for what I use it for. Battery life is weak but I think it's about the average. depends on what you're doing with it. sometimes I get 3 hours, sometimes 4 hours. And the screen will have a glare cause it'ss glossy but I just move the lid/computer so it don't bother me. I would def recomend it for what I use it for. I never played any games on it other than some free internet games so I can't say how it would handle them. Def worth the money.

I'm very satisfied with my purchase. I've had the laptop for 3 months and I have no complaints. The battery life could be a little better, but I do alot of HD Video editing so I know all of the importing, editing, and rendering uses alot of resources. I love the touch screen. I don't use it alot but it's a great feature.

To start off, I've owned this laptop for about 24 hours now and got it as an upgrade to a returned Toshiba Satellite touch which was utterly terrible. Over the past 24 hours I've played with this thing trying to get used to Windows 8 and I find myself trying my hardest to change it back to 7, but I'm not here to review the OS. The laptop is well powered by the core i5, but I can see a year or two down the line where it will become quite the hurdle. The hard drive stated on the box was 500gb but actual is around 450 which is to be expected. The 6gb of ram is probably the minimum necessary to operate windows 8 properly. I am a student so the majority of my work on this computer will be using Office products and internet. I am confident that this will work well for those purposes.

The laptop itself is surprisingly thin at just under an inch. It is all plastic which makes the computer rather light. The trackpad looks and feels like it is a "plasticky" sticker. My trackpad came with a sort of crease in the lower right part which is not supposed to be there, but I can get over it. The backlight under the keys is pretty cool and makes it easy to see keys in the dark. The screen is bright and clear with no problems with the 10-point touch. The sound is pretty decent, DO NOT EXPECT this thing to blow your socks off but it is about as loud as you can expect from a laptop. The quality is on par with the low price of the device meaning that some edges are kinda sharp and in some areas the fitment is a little flimsy. The battery lasts a little over two hours on high performance and screen brightness maxed out.

I would recommend this laptop to a student on a limited budget. If you have an extra hundred or so I would get something better but by no means is this a bad product.

Pros: Sound, battery, price, size, weight

Cons: Skeleton quality (sharpness), processor (possibly), Windows 8 (imo)

If I think of anything else or change my opinion on things I will edit later.

I am pleased with the computer with the exception of one nearly overriding issue. The speakers are totally inadequate! I seriously thought there was something amiss and considered sending it back. I took some time reading reviews and found pour sound quality to be a common complaint. I've addressed the sound issue with a decent Bluetooth speaker. Another complaint is the fact that there is NO Caps Lock indicator light!! ?????

That said, overall, I'm satisfied with the unit. It seems to be fast enough and the cooling fan is not overly loud. Start up time is not too bad for this type of laptop. The touch screen is a nice touch, as well. It's well worth the price paid.

this lap top is okey, but camra is not very good, because I used to have 6903 acer aspire, camra quality really nice, window xp and window 7 both have nice chess titans games, but window 8 don't why? I see video quality of this laptop and also on hd tv. Tv quality is better than laptop screen. I am really mad about camra why not fix this problem, 5 years old laptop had better.

Good Stuff:

Fast

Renders games at full settings on full HD surprisingly well

Keyboard

Bad stuff:

Frequent wi-fi disconnections with any router/card configuration. Deal breaker.

Video playback is disappointing

Cranky trackpad

Actual battery life is around 2 hours

In summary a good high performance laptop for the price, if mobility is not a requirement and LAN is acceptable.

The laptop is utter crap when it comes to usability, you may stop researching this model now and concentrate on some other make/model. Major issues are: Horrible wireless, Heavy, thick, susceptible to scratches and it runs hot.

The BIGGEST issue is the utterly craptastic Intel N-2230 wireless card and a bios which whitelists hardware so you can't just go out, buy a better wifi card and replace it on your own. Crap hardware AND a whitelist, what could possibly go right? The card WILL NOT connect to the 3 different wireless routers after it wakes up from sleep or hibernation the Linksys E4500, the Verizon FIOS router or an old Belkin. Our 2 iphones, 2 ipads, a PS3, Roku, Apple TV, 1 Dell Laptop, 1 Macbook Pro and the original Wii have zero issues connecting to our wireless network. Without wireless connectivity this laptop is just useless for work which we try to do on this machine.

The heft is enormous and, in my mind, unforgivable in current technological environment where everything is slimmer, faster, cooler. This is easily twice as thick as my 2013 macbook pro from work. This laptop could also be easily used as a room heater in colder regions and a food fryer in warmer ones it actually has a giant side vent through which copper fins, the size of mini skyscrapers, are visible.

The outer skin is very prone to scuffs, is a fingerprint magnet and scratches easily. We had quite a few scratches after a few days of light careful use I cannot explain how light and careful use can scratch the outer surface but one way to find out is buy this beast and find out for yourself.

All in all an expensive chunk of nothing. There should be wayy better machines available at this price point including the much more stable Yoga which our 10 year old has.

compared to my 3 yr old HP laptop, this is a great machine!!! The one quirk is that the touchpad is too far to the left of center so my palm keeps touching it and bringing the screen back to whatever I was previously doing in Windows 8. Finding my way back has been no problem, just inconvenient...

I wish I would have done a more comprehensive search of user feedback on the web rather than the professional reviews of this computer. Sure it's a good bargain, it seems fast and works ok but the piece that I missed was the overwhelming number of users who reported sticking keys. Guess what 18 days of using my computer keys began to not work. I was so upset, called Dell and they wanted me to replace the parts. They were happy to "walk me through" the process.....WHAT?! I have an 18 day old non working computer and Dell wants me to do the repairs??? I balked and then they agreed that since it was within 30 days they would send a tech out. Oh, the techs don't work evenings or weekends, and I don't have a flexible schedule.....so we set up an appointment at lunch, and the tech doesn't show, only to call me to tell me he is on his way at the point I have to be back at work.

It gets better. I am livid at this point, what a waste of money. I froze the charge since it was all so new. I call back Dell again and tell them that I froze the charge and want to send the computer back. Turns out I only had 21 days from PURCHACE to send it back. Doesn't matter I've only had the computer in my possession for 18 days; it was too late since I was over the 21 days. I could cry. On a limited budget I get a computer with keys that don't work and service techs that don't show up. By the way, the last Dell rep threatened to screw my credit up if I didn't pay.....got to love that....

Buyers beware. It's all so wrong on a number of levels.

This laptop does all I need it to do and then some,3 gigs of ram 15.6 inch screen and what many consider a draw back I actually am thankful for, aside from the keyboard the only button on this model is the on switch. The way it feels and where everything is located is just perfect for me.I understand that gamers and power users would require more of everything, but for a good basic notebook with the speed and power of this Dell the price is unbeatable and I love it.

I bought this at another retailer for $500. Not worth it. It developed a hard drive problem after owning it for four months. It needed to have a new hard drive installed, with all the problems and hassles that come with that process. I'm still not sure it will last. Do not buy this computer; do research, and pay a few hundred more dollars upfront to avoid the problem. The tech who looked at the machine said he's seen this model develop hard drive problems within weeks of purchase.

Honest reviews on Dell Inspiron 15 I15-156B 15.6-Inch Notebook PC - Pacific Blue

I've become an avid Mac fan in the last 1 1/2 years. I have 2 Macs, for home and office, and I only bought this notebook because I discovered that some programs still won't run under Windows emulation on the Mac.

My needs for the notebook are very humble, to run 2 simple programs, that I don't use heavily. Beyond Windows and Vista being junk, my dislike for the Dell is the keys. They don't respond well, and I either mistype a great deal, or they simply are not registering the keystroke at all, and so a lot of time is wasted. I've owned 2 prior notebooks, IBM's, but those were bought about 10 years ago. I'm not up on what other current notebooks are like, but the Dell leaves me unimpressed. For my simple needs, of occasional use, it's inexpensive and compact, and so I'll keep it. But, having owned several Dell desktops for the last 10 years, the notebooks do not measure up.

Other dislikes: the DVD tray seems incredibly flimsy and fragile. It doesn't eject well, and it can get hung up very easily with seemingly paper thin objects near its path. The screen display has poor contrast, and I've yet to figure out how to improve on it other than dimming the brightness which doesn't fix the contrast itself. Maybe that's Windows sloppiness, and not Dell, I don't know.

The start-up on a cold boot also seems slow at least compared to my old Dell desktop, and especially to the Macs. 2 USB ports are stacked on top of each other and depending on the thickness of the gadgets can block each other.

I also find it hard to open the case. Maybe I have too clunky fingers, but the other notebooks I've used had a more tactile latch and point to grasp. And the shiny cover, all pretty and glossy for the first few seconds, is rapidly covered with fingerprints which detract from its appearance.

Bottom line: it works, but attention to detail is not good, quality construction is missing (made in China, where else?), and performance is subpar.

My old Dell Inspiron died after 4.5 years. It treated me well, it rarely crashed. I think the motherboard died, b/c my HD was readable when I bought the new Dell. The new Inspiron is great. Love the wide screen monitor. I played the Dark Knight on it, and it looks beautiful. The sound is ok. The computer runs very smoothly. Its rare I am waiting for anything. The Inspiron connects to my wireless network without any issues. I used to loose my connection with my last laptop. I thought it was Comcast, it appears it was the computer. The HD is completely silent. The only noise comes from the fan once in awhile.

A few cons... The Mouse pad is not as smooth as my last Inspiron. It "sticks" once in awhile. But I do like the two mouse pad buttons. I didnt like all the Vista security. But, that is something you can turn off.

I havent used the cd/dvd burner yet. But I dont expect any issues.

For those who only need the basics, this laptop is a great deal for the money.

Got the computer in a timely mannor, thanks Amazon. Got it up and running, I was excited to try Windows 8. I was taking the leap. I like Windows 8 and after 5 minutes of getting used to the new interface it was working fine for me. We did buy this computer for our 14yr son and so it was his turn to have some fun. It worked well, very fast. Then day 2. He was playing his favorite game, and called me over because the computer was frozen. Could not do anything with it. Hard boot. No good. Used the "one key recovery" feature, to roll back to original settings. Came back up for a bit then, would not load Windows any more at all. Talked to the nice lady at Lenovo and she offered to send factory recovery disks at no charge. I will update this when we try to recover. Great computer, no so sure about the software, may need a few updates before Win 8 is perfect.

Update Dec 20th : Lenovo sent recovery disks. Attempted recovery with Lenovo on the phone to guide me. Did not work, the computer is going back to be repaired. Not too happy now, but cannot complain about the service, it was fine. I hope the machine works properly when it gets back, will update.

Update Jan 17th : Still waiting. They are replaceing the motherboard and do not have the correct one in stock at the repair center it is at, so they say, must come from China or something, not a very happy customer at this point.

Update Jan 29th : Lenovo is now not the company I would recomend

Update Feb 16th : Finally have the computer back. It is running well. Lennovo support was terrible giving mis-information and outright lies were told to us. According to the "Lenovo Depot Repair Center Repair Action Report" that came back with the machine, the repair was replace hard drive. The telephone support told us that the motherboard needed to be replaced and it was not available and that is why the repair was taking over 5 weeks. If it was jus t a HDD replacement it should have taken no time at all. There is no problem finding a HDD at a repair depot I would hope. I am a very unhappy customer Lenovo. I hope that some people will think twice about buying any product from you. As a small business owner, if something this bad happened, I would bend over backward to make sure my customer was happy in the end. No such thing with Lenovo. I asked maybe if they could put in an extra 4GB of ram to help make up for my inconvience, no reply. The only thing that really surprised me was that we actually got our computer back. Lenovo you need to seriously look at how you treat your customers.

I bought this laptop for my uncle. It is a good laptop for decent home and office usage. It is not ideal for playing high graphics games. If you need a laptop for home and office usage, this is the one!

Pros:

Screen size

Weight

Keyboard with numpad

Big HDD

Good i5 processor

Cons

Average Graphics Card

Windows 8 (personal opinion I didn't like it that much)

RAM could have been more... although this is not a real problem as such!

On the whole, its a good i5/4GB/750GB combination!

I bought a G580 and it failed right out of the box. Lenovo's customer service is not a service---it is a nightmare. Negotiating their phone menu is like trying to get thru a maze. I returned the computer as directed and heard nothing back. Nobody in their customer service knows what department does what. Constant holds and misconnections to wrong numbers. Then just try calling back. Finally after waiting (they said they would contact me) two weeks I told them to cancel sending me a replacement. DON"T buy Lenovo.

Honest reviews on Lenovo G580 15.6-Inch Laptop (Glossy Brown IMR)

Pros:

1. It seems to be a pretty fast machine for the most part.

2. It has the latest OS, Windows 8, only a disadvantage while getting used to this vastly different experience from any other Windows version.

3. Nothing has gone wrong yet with any of the hardware.

Cons:

1. Keyboard difficulties: (a) The standard key section is too close to the Num key section: this makes it harder to tell where certain keys are when the room isn't well lighted (very annoying!) (b) The CapsLk key looks the same whether caps lock is on or off.

2. The laptop user is led into using LOTS of junk software and software that s/he must eventually either give up or pay for.

3. Attempting to get a little laptop support online from a Lenovo rep was pretty much a waste of time and nevertheless a cost to Lenovo that the users probably pay for in the cost of the laptop.

The design/look is stylish. The color is such a deep brown that it almost appears black (and has faint sparkle specks in the finish similar to a car paint job). It looks really nice. The keyboard is also designed very well. I can type with no issues. The keys feel good and they are sturdy. It doesn't feel cheap. I'm also enjoying the Windows 8 experience. Even though the OS is made especially for touch screens, it still feels fairly natural for the laptop. I enjoy the apps interface of Windows 8. Anyway, I recommend this laptop.

I have been using the Acer Timeline (14 inch, Aspire 4810TZ-4011) since yesterday evening and so far so good. Here are my first impressions:

1. The delivery was quick and packaging was good.

2. The looks of the laptop are fantastic. Love the isolation-type keyboard. The screen hinges could have been more solid but for a lightweight machine appear ok.

3. The eject button for the CD, various ports, the card reader, are all very suitably positioned.

4. The colours of the screen are beautiful. There are setup options to adjust those to taste, but I did not need to use them.

5. The laptop was easy to set up. I loaded the battery for about an hour before starting, perhaps an overkill, and was rewarded with a blue light coming from beneath the touchpad.

6. Setting up Vista for the first time was much quicker than my last XP setup on a netbook. Feels natural so far.

7. Soon after startup I was prompted to create recovery disks, and made two DVDs with the system and one with software.

8. There is (was) a lot of preloaded software. I spent a good deal of time finding out what it does (on Google) and cleaning most of it up.

9. People who have complained from performance issues maybe should take care to remove the redundant backup software (two or three of those pre-installed?!), the trial antivirus and other FUD nonsense.

10. I registerted for a FREE copy of Windows 7 for Timeline owners, to be shipped in October (woot!).

11. Set up Skype (after combating for a while with the firewall settings of Vista), and made a call -the sound is good, the mic is well positioned, the camera works fine, even better after peeling off the protective plastic sheet :)

12. Tested a youtube video in HD and it did not play smooth, which was a disappointment.

Comparing this to my 4y old FS, the Acer Timeline feels about as solid, a lot more silent, cooler, lighter by more than 2 pounds, with 6 times the RAM, 4 times the battery time, and a newer processor -clearly an upgrade in every aspect.

I have had my Acer Aspire 4810TZ for all of three days now, and am quite happy with it. Some observations:

The keys are spaced very well for me ... the keyboard has an excellent feel. The glossy black finish is a bit unfortunate, as they instantly show smudging. The trackpad mouse button does indeed require Thumb of Steel, but nicely accomodates leftand right-clicking without being separated into two buttons.

I'm amazed at how happy I am with the screen. I don't like the glassy displays, but as long as the backlighting is intense, it can be used in fairly bright light. That's the case with this screen. The resolution is very crisp. I have not had any need or desire to adjust the color settings.

Speakers are not great in terms of volume, but I just can't imagine docking a review for that quibble. The laptop is thin and light get some headphones!

The battery life is phenomenal, as advertised; the first time I've ever had a laptop that performed within 50% of the advertised battery life.

The CPU is probably a little underpowered for Vista, but not terribly so. I'm sure that I will be happier with Windows 7 when it comes out.

Now for Linux. I shrunk the Vista partition down drastically using GParted from an Ubuntu 9.04 live CD. After that was done and I rebooted, Vista determined that something was wrong and launched a repair process that took a very long time to complete (2 hours+). It then came up into Vista and I have had no problems with it.

I formatted most of the freed space to give over to Ubuntu. I was completely floored by how much worked immediately: sound, wireless, keyboard control of volume, webcam, USB ... wow. After upgrading to a slightly newer Linux kernel (2.6.30), wireless now comes up correctly after being suspended, and keyboard control of screen brightness works. I can't think of anything that doesn't work other than multitouch gestures on the touchpad. Battery life seems to be as good as when running Windows. Speed for the tools of my trade is great when running Linux: emacs, X windows, SSH, Firefox and Flash.

Unlike a previous reviewer, I am in no sense a "casual" user; I do software development and am always a power user of software. But not a gamer or graphics guy who needs PhotoShop. I tend to view my laptop as a window to development servers using X and SSH, and a window to the Web using a browser. For those uses, this little laptop is entirely capable. So both the casual and the geeky can find happiness with the Acer 4810.

I have owned it for 10 days now.

Just noticed !!! the DVD burner does NOT Burn DVDs... I did a full system recovery, and nope...just can't !!! I would leave three stars if I could change my rating because Acer warranty helpline is toll free, easily reachable and extremely courteous. I have yet to see if international warranty is worth something cause I took it back to France or do I have to mail it in the US...I got a lemon, it happens.

Let's forget this unusual defect, and focus on the rest

The positives :

I like the keyboard a lot (flat keys, well spaced, shiny surface...yes, fingerprints stay, and stays cool)

very silent fan

very bright screen with the led backlight, no prob to work outdoors

computer top, and screen don't get hot at all

two finger operations on the touchpad (zoom in and out with two fingers, keep scrolling with circular motion, backward and forward with right and left swipe)

neat design (overall), looks smart, feels sturdy

audio jack connections on the side

nice specs (320 gb of hd, 3gb ddr3)

great battery life

fast enough

stable system

audio digital output

hdmi and vga video output

it did reboot once on its own (crashed) when fast forwarding a video on vlc, but I cannot make it happen again, I believe it has been fixed by the windows updates (anyway, this would be a vista issue that would get solved by windows 7 upgrade, or did already get solved buy the automatic updates)

free upgrade to windows 7 (the form is in the computer box, whether the reseller tells you about it or not)

The negative

sound quality is nice, but not loud

no firewire port ! come-on, how do you connect your camcorder sure, you can by an adapter

Honest reviews on Acer Aspire 4810TZ-4011 Timeline 14.0-Inch Laptop

Any 4810T made before July has a problem due to thermal instability. When driven hard for a while the machine becomes slower and slower and just stops, showing 100% CPU activity, even with no user activity at all. This is caused by faulty peripheral drivers that cause the CPU to spend all of its time in interrupt service routines. The problem can be cured by downloading and installing the latest BIOS, driver, and application files from Acer's web site. However, if my experience is any guide, you will not find this out by talking to Acer's facetiously named Customer Care Representatives.

I bought a 4810T-8480 from Staples on July 27, 2009, and received a unit that was manufactured on May 8, 2009. Needless to say, the unit had "sleeping sickness". Before I researched this problem on the internet I called Acer's customer-no-service twice, each time giving a detailed explanation of how the machine slowed down and stopped with 100% CPU but no activity: The first time I was advised to clear the internet state (a total non-sequitur, since when the phenomenon occurs one cannot do anything). The second time I was directed to clear out Windows/Temp and /Tasks, another time-waster. It seems impossible that these people have not heard of this problem, so why are they misdirecting customers from the solution? A conscientious company would be pro-actively notifying customers with these machines and providing them fixes.

Anyway, I solved the problem by downloading and installing EVERY driver and application update offered for my machine on Acer's site and especially by flashing the latest BIOS, which as of this writing is ver. 1.23. Acer attempts to discourage BIOS upgrades, and includes a dire warning in red at the top of the BIOS downloads which reads in part: "...Acer recommends that you should only update your firmware/drivers if you have been instructed to do so by an Acer Customer Care Representative." However, since it is clear that Acer has only Customer Don't-Care Representatives, that isn't going to happen, so ignore that warning and forge ahead. After downloading and running the upgrade you may have one brief heart-stopping moment when a pop-up appears that says that the installation may have failed and seems to ask for your input. TOUCH NOTHING and the BIOS flash will end with an automatic reboot.

Be sure to select the correct OS in the not-so-obvious pull-down box when selecting drivers and applications to download and install. In general, it won't hurt to attempt to install the wrong driver, since the install will either fail or just leave a useless driver, but of course you needn't download drivers for peripherals that you don't have, such as in my case Bluetooth. The one exception to that that I found was in selecting the web camera application: There are two, one from Chicony and one from Suyin, and no obvious way to tell which vendor's camera is installed in my machine. I guessed and installed Suyin first; it didn't work, so I installed the Chicony application over it, which did work. It might have been better practice to have removed the first application before installing the second.

I hope that this helps anyone who buys a down-level Timeline Lord knows you won't get any help from Acer!

Once the updates are installed, this is a very nice machine. The battery lifetime, if not quite the advertised 8 hours, is still impressive. It is cool enough to actually use on a lap. No, the slow-down is not inherent in the speed of the processor, which is perfectly adequate for most uses. It will never satisfy a gamer, but that is obviously not its niche. It's a great machine for a student to carry around all day, running Office aps, accessing the web, etc. If it weren't such a do-it-your-self project I would have rated it higher.

If you see any Acer reps or especially Acer execs, give 'em Hell for me!

This review relates more to the AS4810T-8480, but as it is not sold on Amazon yet, I wanted to make sure everyone is aware of the problems I am experiencing on that model, as this might impact the entire product line.

I received my new laptop 4 days ago. Overall it is great, and I'd love to post a positive review here. It looks great from the outside, the 6-8 hours of battery life is a reality (let's see how long it lasts before the battery worns out), keyboard is nice, etc... Also agree that the built quality is not perfect, but overall it is fine.

My major concern, is the overall system stability. I am not a heavy user, mostly internet surfing.

However, in the past 4 days, I have experienced a tremendous number of crashes, maybe 2 to 3 a day, just using normal programs such as Skype, Internet Explorer 8 and MSN Live Messenger... At somepoint, the CPU goes to 100% utilization and the system becomes very slow or totally unresponsive, so I need to do a forced shut down. I thought this was due to Internet Explorer, but experienced the same with Firefox yesterday...

I just tried to install a USB AT&T 3G key, and despite a successful installation, now I am unable to log into Windows because on the log on screen my cursor and keyboards are none responsive. I have just logged a ticket with their Support Team, let's see what they come up.

I have never had some many problems with a new laptop in the past and am considering returning it for a refund.

Again, I would really like to love this laptop, I think ACER has a great product here, BUT I cannot recommended it at this point, and hope I will be able to update my recommendation very soon.

UPDATE: just over one month after receiving the laptop and as I was about to return it after ACER's customer service proved unable to provide a solution, I updated the Intel VGA driver (as many of you suggested in your comments, thanks a lot my bad for not checking them out earlier!) and the BIOS, both being recommended on [..] and I am happy to confirm the issues have disappeared. The laptop is now fully functional, so I have decided to keep it.

In regards to other features of the computer, I would say that my main complaints are the lack of a hardware switch for the wireless, and the screen is a little too glossy for me. The speakers are a bit weak. Bluetooth could have been included but I knew about it so can't complain.

But overall I'm still happy with the Timeline, and would recommend it to anyone traveling a lot and not requiring high CPU power!
