I bought this laptop to replace an old Toshiba that I have and it is great! It's lightweight, fast and thin. I am not much of a fan of Windows 8, but that is not the laptop's fault. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 initially and it seemed to have problems with the wireless card. So I decided to install Ubuntu 12.10 instead, and it is working just fine. The only complaint that I have is the battery life is not as good as I had hoped and it was hard to find an estimate before purchasing. It seems like the battery life is ~4 hours for coding/basic internet browsing. All told, it is a great laptop at a great price. I am very happy so far...

I bought this laptop in January 2013 now on May 21st 2013 my battery is not charging!!! I get the message plugged in and not charging, this I find is crazy since the laptop is less than 6 months old. I regret buying this brand and would never buy another toshiba ever again!

My only complaint is that the touch pad is super sensitive and is constantly registering unintentional motions, like side swipes and extra taps. Things are always popping up and swiping in, but of course those "smart" motions don't actually register when I want them to. Other than that annoying feature, everything else is great.

My daughter is thrilled, but not so much with Windows 8.

The laptop is working great, no problems at all.

This is the worst computer, the keyboard is a horrible design, I had to return it to Toshiba after 90 days to fix the keyboard and they charged me for the shipping even tough it was under warranty. I would never buy a Toshiba again.

My wife's desk top tower finally had enough. Because of her work as a grade school teacher she had a school assigned laptop and had come to really appreciate a laptop's utility and convenience. We examined features, prices, etc on every laptop in the $800 and under price range and picked this model Dell from Amazon. We've both been blown away by it's display clarity, speed, ease of use, and features like full numeric keypad, built in camera, as well as the features of the loaded Windows 7 OS.

As for Amazon's performance as a seller? Exceptional! I can't promise this will be your experience, but we took the "free shipping" option available at the time, and got the computer "the next day!" This is a fine computer at a great price from an excellent retailer.

This is a great laptop that provides good performance comparing to the price.

Disadvantages:

Dell bloats the OS with unnecessary software that caused some crashes. I removed almost all Dell's software and now everything works fine.

I have been looking for a new laptop for a couple of months. I needed the best price for a laptop that suited my business needs. This turned out to be just right. I needed the large HD and lots of memory. However, I lug it around a lot, so it had to be pretty light-weight. Dell has good support, the price was good and setting it up was so easy and almost automatic. If I had to buy again, I would buy this computer. Special feature: Very few laptops have a keypad, so felt lucky that this one included it.

I've now owned this computer for six months. My hard drive has failed once already and I'm certain it is going to fail again. It overheats whenever you run more than one program at a time. It has downright stupid fan placement. The touchpad is complete garbage and skips all over the screen while you are trying to type an email or a letter, often erasing all your work. Customer service has awful English skills and is nearly useless. I paid $600 for this and I desperately wish I could get my money back.

You might like this right out of the box, but give it six months and you'll regret your purchase.

I've had this computer for almost 3 years and finally will be able to get a new one in about a month. I didn't even know if this computer was still for sale considering it's getting rather old for the computer world. I've never had anything good to say about this laptop. The DAY after the 14-15 day return policy it died. I went through a month plus of b/s with Dell and then finally got it fixed. It freezes, crashes, key board stinks, mouse stinks, battery went to crap within the first year, etc etc etc. Overheats almost every time I use it (it's about burning the poo out of my leg right now), too embarrassed to even take it to classes with me. I paid 600-700 for this computer, never ever again will I spend that amount of money on a laptop and certainly will be getting a different brand.

I have found the laptop to be a good one. I have had it over a month now and experienced no problems other than getting used to Window 8. Te battery holds a good charge and can usually go five hours or more. It is a 15 inch screen and has a convenient number pad next to the keyboard.

We have had our Dell Vostro laptop for a little over a year now and have been happy! Awesome machine! My only complaint is the space bar on the keyboard. You have to strike it close to the middle or else it may not respond. The keyboard does seem a tad chintzy. Other than that, I am glad we have made this purchase!

Powerful laptop. I bought mine custom with my name engraved and 8gb ram and the Nvidia 1gb graphics card. These options are available at sony's main website but run extra by about 200plus. Even when I use the stamina setting using the intel 4000 graphics card it gets about 40 fps on high with low shadows. If youre a student pick this up at Sony's website and get that free PS3 or Vita.

I am not an apple junkie. I hate the iPhone and the iPads and find them to be outdated technology. Be assured I'm not an Apple cult follower who will tell you everything Apple has ever made is a piece of gold.

Now, on with my review.

I used to be a PC user. I know Windows 7 inside and out. My old laptop was just getting outdated and weighed no less than 8 lbs and was getting heavy to carry back and forth from school. I intensely dislike the windows 8 interface but I didn't want to be stuck behind on an old OS either. My father turned me on to the Apple Macs and I am glad he did.

The screen is beautiful. As a Windows user that was always something I envied. This retina is supposed to have a 30% less glare than the MacBook pro without Retina display. I can't say I know for sure (because I don't have a previous macbook to compare it too) but I haven't had a problem with glare.

The overall physical quality of the product is outstanding. Nothing feels cheap, no pieces that don't belong. It's a very attractive piece of equipment and it feels like it will last me a few years.

The Solid State Drive (SSD) is no joke. I read some other reviews that say there is lag and I think they are crazy. This computer doesn't hesitate to do anything I ask it to do. 8gb of RAM is more than I have had on any other computer and it easily handles everything. I'm not a gamer or a high tech junkie but I do expect my computer to perform quickly and flawlessly. This beast far surpasses my demands. 256 GB may or may not be enough memory. I have had the computer for about a month and have a little under 200 GB left. The only downfall to this computer is that YOU CANNOT UPGRADE THE RAM. The RAM, mother board, and battery are all soldered to the chassis. That means any modifications will destroy the computer.

Another small issue, but easily fixed, is there is no ethernet connection. I'm well aware that wifi is now keeping up with the wired internet, but I do find the wired connection much more reliable and much quicker when downloading big files. A $30.00 adapater is needed (which I have), but it is still something I would have liked to have been actually on the laptop itself.

The computer weighs less than 4lbs and my back thanks me.

The battery life is astounding, but like I said I'm coming from an outdated laptop in which 3 hours was a generous battery life. 7 hours of HEAVY use is much more than I could ask for.

This computer also comes with some cool features. I really dig the keyboard backlight. I've never had a computer with that before and I do find it really helpful. The facetime camera is also of excellent quality.

If you buy this computer from Apple (I bought mine in July, maybe its running through August 2013) as a student they take $100.00 off at the store and give you a $100.00 itunes gift card. I used this gift card to purchase things like pages, keynote, and numbers. The service I received at the Apple store was phenomenal and I got an excellent deal on this computer.

Overall I love this computer. I went all crazy and cased it up and got ridiculous unnecessary accessories (like a keyboard cover) but it's all because I love my Macbook pro. While the price tag may be eye-popping, you are getting your money's worth out of it.

UPDATE:

I've been using this computer about 2 months now for various activities like school work, video viewing and surfing the internet. This computer leaves me with no wants. The battery life is awesome and I do not worry that I need to bring my charger to school just in case because I know it will make it through the day.

I have also found that while viewing videos for about half an hour or so (like workout videos), it only eats about 5% of the overall battery life with brightness on a good setting.

Now here was something I found interesting. If one were to shop around for a comparable computer, such as an Asus or Samsung, one would end up paying almost as much as you would for this MacBook Pro. All the computers I've looked at all have touch screen (a feature I do not want) 4GB of RAM and about the same SSD storage. I'm sure those are quality computers, but I really dislike the Windows 8 interface.

I still love this computer and expect to keep loving it as I use it more and more.

I was a PC user for all my life, this was the first time I decided to buy a Mac and I was a little bit scared by the OS but really ... this laptop its simply awesome! Works perfect, fast and smooth! If you are an active pc gammer DO NOT BUY THIS LAPTOP I do play some games and this its the main drowback of this product for me (I knew it before buying it so ... im not going to take off a star for it!)

If you are a software developer, designer, musician or anyone who need a really strong fast performance for work buy this!

If you are like a internet browsing person... do not do the investment in this laptop, you can find something cheaper that will do the job.

Best Deals for Apple MacBook Pro ME662LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop with Retina Display

These reviews really helped me when I was figuring out what to buy, so here are my two cents. I couldn't figure out if I wanted the Pro Retina or the Air, and I wasn't sure if I wanted 13 in. or 11 in. Now, I actually own both the Macbook Pro 13" Retina and the new Macbook Air 11 inch, and I understand most people won't want to buy both but these are my thoughts. I first got the 13" Retina, because I loved the screen, esp. the way text looked because I read a lot and it made such a difference. I have the i7 version, plus the 8 GB RAM, and 256 hard drive. I love this thing. It's gorgeous and fast, a pleasure to work on. BUT. The only problem with it for me is the weight. I know it's lighter than it used to be but I'm petite and when I'm traveling and need to give presentations, this thing is in my bag the entire day, and I find it heavy. Many people may well be stronger than I am but I personally find it a pain to drag around when I'm on the road. Also, the battery life is good but not brilliant, so if I use it all morning and a part of the afternoon unplugged, it's dead.

So I recently bought the 11 inch Macbook Air as well, the new version, also maxed out, i7, 8 GB, etc. That thing is so light, it's amazing. It is lightning fast and the battery life is incredible. I can use it and use it and the battery won't budge. However. The screen is so much less good than my Retina Pro. I'm not a picky person and before I got used to the Retina screen, I didn't mind but now, it's a huge difference. The text is pixelated and very small, the whole thing looks much less good.

Basically, I think that if you're going to be mainly stationary when using the laptop, I would definitely go for the Retina Pro 13 inch. At home, it's all I use nowadays. It's a joy to use and looks amazing. However, if you travel a lot and will mainly be using it on the go, I think the new Air is fantastic. I hardly notice it in my bag and the screen is fine, just not as beautiful as the Retina, plus the performance and battery life are incredible. If the weight and shorter battery life of the Retina doesn't bother you, that would be the clear choice.

Honest reviews on Apple MacBook Pro ME662LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop with Retina Display

Luckily I was able to get this model on educational discount with tax exempt, but the price tag is still too high for the performance.

The MD213LL/A model with a 256GB SSD is selling for $1499 now and that's probably the best value for the 13" retina models. The 3210M and 3230M intel processors differ less than 5% in performance. The only trouble with the older model is the screen burn-in issue that may be present in a large batch. On this current model, the burn-in is not noticeable unless you go all white from a high contrast still image, then there is still some minor burn-in. But other than this minor annoyance, the screen looks amazing in terms of details and color saturation.

Intel HD 4000 on a 3230M is a joke for a 2560x1600 screen. It will play movies and do some light design work, but anything a bit advanced causes problems. Even AutoCAD 2D work and Photoshop CS6 presented display problems in multiple instances for me. This should really be a Macbook Retina, not Pro at all.

A few years back, Intel barred Nvidia from making Northbridge chips for Intel which included an embded NVidia graphics chip, so now Apple has to put 3 large chips in a Macbook Pro for it to have discrete graphics. This is very sad. The Intel HD 4000's performance on a 3230M chip is at best on par with a NVidia 320M. I would have been VERY happy if the 13" model had even a 630M graphics chip, not to mention one of the new mid-range 700M series. It would have made this little laptop almost PERFECT! The price tag then wouldn't be so unjustified neither.

I use many Windows applications, Bootcamp with centralized drivers allowed me to install Win 7 on it hassle free and runs as it should.

It really depends on what you use this laptop for. For everyday internet browsing, documents and typical use, this laptop will run very nice for you. For design work, heavy processor usage or ANY graphics intensive applications, this laptop is a major disaster. For gaming, steer away completely.

UPDATE: The newer batch of the 2103 MacBook Pro 13" Retina does not seem to suffer from image burn-in at all. A burn-in test revealed no ghosting at all (as of April 30th). Apple seems to have silently resolved the issue in production.

The retina display is amazing as far as doing everyday tasks with so much detail to each application. I started out with the 15inch cMBP w/ i7 Core and 8GB RAM and 750 GB HDD with nVidia discrete graphics card. I took it back the week after because 1. 15inch is getting less exposure for day-to-day tasks such as: browsing, editing, and recording. 2. The larger screen with all the bells did not look as well as the retina 3. Retina is getting to be where the future is. I thought I needed the 15 or 13 with optical drive now that I have used my 13 I realize I do not use it as much as I thought I would. I love this Notebook it is so portable yet very powerful and can handle multiple tasks that are more typical of your average laptop user.

I've only had this computer for four days, but so far I love it. I was mildly concerned about the setup, as I replaced a laptop on a wireless network, but it was super easy. I just followed the on screen instructions, and the computer was completely set up within half an hour. I love the big screen (upgraded from a 15 inch laptop.) Great price from Amazon, too, with superquick delivery.

I've had several hard drive issues and had to reformat it several times!! My laptop never left my home, not abused; there is NO reason this computer should have this many problems! I will never buy a Dell again!! I was hoping for a really good system, I paid $900.00 and was excited...what a major let down.

Best Deals for Dell Inspiron i1750-1840OBK 1750 17.3-Inch Laptop (Obsidian Black)

I have owned this computer for just under 1 year now. It was purchased to replace a Desktop workstation and laptop I use to video edit, code webs, jam multimedia. The speed with 4GB ram and Win7 kicks butt! Way faster than any XP configuration or any Vista setup. 64bit Win7 has some issues with older software but some of that may be time to leave behind anyway...

Originally it had a problem with the headphone jack, a short or bad soldering so only the left channel output with headphones, etc. Called, had no problem getting the Warranty changed to MY NAME with proof of purchase from the last owner. They had me ship it back to the Depot in TX for repair.

The Box to return it came the next morning, I packed it up and shipped it to them, marking down that Hard Drive reformat was OK ( I had already made a backup of everything) if needed. I got the system back in about 7 days! I was really happy to have this awesome machine back in my hands. Well, my happiness was short lived as soon as I re-formated and re-installed my system (I was paranoid someone could have installed some crap while at the Depot) I plugged in my Headphone Jack and got the LEFT Channel on BOTH Left and Right side now! I was miffed then but decided the system was just too bad to the bone to send back for this problem. I bought a iMic USB unit and just went on with it.

Well, then came the New Year, and my Internal Wireless Adapter (Intel WiFi Link 5100 AGN) began to act up. Since it worked SOME of the Time with one router and most of the time with another, I began replacing all of them. Using other computers with various Wireless adapters I ruled out the routers and pinpointed the Internal WiFi NIC in the 1750. At that point it finally quite working altogether so it was obvious the problem was hardware. Looked up the system on Dell.com support and found replacement parts. $35-$70 for a new one and the install looks really easy (for laptops this is not the norm!!) but I called them anyway to confirm.

Giving the Customer Support the Service Tag Number and Express Tag they told me I had another 4 months on the Warranty and they would fix it at no charge and also fix the headphone jack CORRECTLY this time. I said what the heck and again did a full backup and shipped it off. The Box was at my door the next day this time too.

It took about 11 days to get it back and this time they did WIPE OUT my system and RESTORE it. SO did I when I got it back! The Headphone Jack is working perfect and the Wireless Adapter is back to normal.

Why give this a 5 star rating when I had to have it repaired twice?

This Machine is SWEEEEET!! The keyboard response and feel is just perfect, the wrist rest and body feel like a BMW or Porsche style lines. The built in webcam is OUTSTANDING in any well lit room. The Screen is very nice and does movies or webpages better than they have ever been seen! The PENTIUM system never lags and I beat it pretty good. The wireless adapter is N/G/B and has GREAT range. The response and turnaround time for repair was very professional, easy to understand, surprisingly FAST.

I would recommend buying another Dell to ANYONE over a HP/Compaq.

Honest reviews on Dell Inspiron i1750-1840OBK 1750 17.3-Inch Laptop (Obsidian Black)

My experience with this laptop would completely change my opinion of ever buying a Dell Laptop again. One I ordered it I got two. I considered keeping both and giving one to my daughter but when the hard drive went out luckily I was able to return it since I never ordered two in the first place. I kept the second one and now 6 months later and hours of time on tech support the laptop needs to be sent back because they suspect the hard drive is bad. Very dissapointed and would never buy such a vulnerable laptop again. Keep in mind, the computer never left the house and was only used minimally. What a waste of money.

I have been looking at this item for quite a while and finally pulled the trigger. My concerns with the speed of the processor on the Core 2 rather than i5 and i7 and the high price were my only reason not to buy. After reading about the battery hit taken on this with the faster processors and the price dropping about $100 so that the price difference with the i7 become quite large, I decided to go with the Core 2 and I am glad I did.

First off, the screen is glossy and only of average brightness but the viewing angles and the ability to turn the contrast all the way up and still see a good picture a plus. Second, there is no bluetooth but there are so many tiny dongles these days it isn't a huge issue for your mouse or headphones just use of one the three usb ports. Third, the reason to buy this is for gaming and I am happy to say I was able to load all my games on the spacious 320gb hard drive with room to spare and they are all playable anywhere from medium to ultra settings. I play almost exclusively real-time strategy titles such as StarCraft II and the Command and Conquer titles. They all run really good.

The build quality is phenomenal on this thing. It is fun to just look at and admire. Being able to change the lighting in five zones and in various ways makes night computing perfect. The small keyboard is a little tougher to type on than a chic-lit style on a netbook but the razor sharp backlighting makes it work out fine after a little practice. Touch typing works great. The wrist area does not show fingerprints, the mouse has a great texture and really soft press buttons but I use an external mouse.

My first unit did not work the second day. It went black screen on me and Amazon shipped me a replacement the very next day that has been perfect. I also went into the bios on the second one and enabled turbo mode and it works no blue screens.

I spent all day loading up my gaming titles and look forward to playing on the go and around the house a lot more now. I was also pleased that 1080p YouTube worked flawlessly and my programs seem snappy. So far, so good, enjoying it. The kids love it too and like to change the keyboard to pink for the girls and incredible hulk green for the boys.

A fun toy, I hope to enjoy for a long time, and recommend.

Dell's m11x is a wonderful, fast gaming laptop with one FATAL flaw: it has a design defect; the screen hinges separate from the chassis with normal use. This defect has occurred in a LOT of computers. Close to 100 are listed on one fan website alone. So far, Dell has not acknowledged this defect, nor have they affected reasonable solutions like extending the warranty on the hinges and tasking an engineer to design a permanent fix. Let me state this again; this is a design defect on the part of Dell and not the fault of the users. Check out the fan forums on Notebookreview or other websites if you need more feedback. This is a great little computer but Dell needs to own up to their design mistake.

Best Deals for Alienware AM11X-2894CSB 11.6-Inch Laptop (Cosmic Black)

Alienware m11x is most powerful 11.6" laptop in the market comparing with all other 11.6"/12.1" netbooks/laptops.

I would give this laptop 5 stars if I write this review in the begining of 2010 because it comes with Intel C2D SU7300 (Performance closer to Intel C2D T5670) and Nvidia GT335m (Performance closer to ATI5730) provding good enough computing power plus graphic engine to play all current PC games at least mid graphic setting.

Why do I only give 3 stars for it after half year?

Because Alienware m11x has the 2nd generation and current amazon price is higher.

The 2nd generation comes with i5 or i7 processors instead of original C2D SU7300, and Dell normally proivde discount coupon to the customer.

I purchased my i5-520um, Nvidia GT335, 4GB Ram, 160GB HDD, and Bluetooth m11x per "$920 + tax" after 100 off coupon from Dell.

Let's compare with another similar model Lenovo U160, which is also 11.6"/12.1" laptop with i5/i7, but its selling price is $1000+ without any GPU. As you already knew, Alienware gives you i5/i7 with GPU (Nvidia GT335m) and better cost.

Beside powerful specs, m11x is easier 11.6" laptop for you to upgrade memory, hard drive, and wifi card. It's the reason I choose 2.5" 160GB hard drive. You can easy get a 2.5" 500GB hard drive in between $50 to $60 to replace the 160GB one without paying Dell like $100. You can check youtube, and find out how easy that you can change those components inside Alienware m11x and how hard for you to change componetns within other 12.1" laptop/netbook hard drive such as ASUS EEE PC 12" series. Alienware did a great job providing user easier way to upgrade the system.

Well, we know that price is higher than EEE PC and other 12.1"/11.6" netbook, but it's a i5/i7/C2D LAPTOP (NOT A NETBOOK) with Nvidia GT335m and up to 8 hours battery life making a unbeatable conditions for user.

Currently, DELL Price is $949 for i5 alienware m11x (2GB Ram + 160GB Hard drive) before all upgrades and discount coupon. For C2D SU7300 m11x (2GB Ram + 160GB Hard drive) starts from $799. That isn't a final cost because Dell keeps providing discount coupons very offen.

I would say current Amazon posted Alienware SU7300, 4GM Ram, and 320GB hard driver making a good combination, but $999 is too high (You can m11x i5 version as $999). If they can cost down SU7300 m11x in between $849 and $899, it will be very worth to buy it.

If you have budget more than $800 for a thin, light, and powerful gaming laptop. It will be the best choice.

Honest reviews on Alienware AM11X-2894CSB 11.6-Inch Laptop (Cosmic Black)

This thing is perfect for me. Its light, compact, long battery life, and has the GPU needed to play my games on medium settings. I sometimes have to carry alot of other gear so the compactness and light weight is very nice. I have used the ASUS G73 series (they make great desktop replacment systems and are very powerful) but those are WAY to big and heavy for my intended use. I wont get into the lights issue as that has already been covered in other reviews.

I did ALOT of research before this purchase. I really wanted the R2 version with the i7 processor and optimus. However I went to several forums and there are many problems with the i5/i7, optimus, and DX10 when it comes to games like Civ V. The R1 has manually switching (FN+F6) and drivers that work really well with DX10. I really like the manually switching to save battery life when doing mundane tasks that dont need the 335M GPU. I also downloaded the updated BIOS (A05) and all the other drivers from the dell website and they all work fine.

I played the Civ V demo with everything on medium with textures and water on high at max resolution and it was very smooth. Company of Heroes online (the best RTS EVER made, its free and its even better than SC2!) plays perfectly on this machine. It also came with Portal for free on Steam, and it plays flawlessly with everything on high. I dont play very many FPS on PC because I have a 360 and PS3 and thats what all of my friends have. I also have a custom gaming desktop rig that I built my self using MSI parts so if I want to do some heavy PC gaming at home I use that.

After I updated the BIOS I was able to overclock the CPU to 1.6 according to CPUZ (great program). The overclocked Core Duo is comparable to an i3 when it comes to speed, the i5/i7 really isnt that much faster, and the battery life takes a big hit too. Some games run better on the R1 and a few R2 users have even traded in their systems to go back to the R1.

The R2 version from will cost you around $1200 out the door with the same specs (except the processor and bluetooth) as this one on amazon. The R1 comes in cosmic black vs the R2 soft touch stealth black. You cant really go wrong the R1 or R2 but there is a well documented hinge issue on both machines if you look on other forums such as . I guess I got a good one because the screen does NOT touch the keyboard on mine. Also the screen is really glossy. I dont use this outdoors so it is not an issue for me but it could be a deal breaker for others.

So if you need a light, extremely portable laptop, and want to play some Company of Heroes, SC2, or Civ V on the move, get the M11x. If you want a big, super powerful, heavy, low battery life destop replacement then look elsewhere.

Update:

Now after owning for about 15 months, during which its never been dropped or compromised, I've had 4 critical issues. The hinge broke twice (replaced twice, each time requiring 5 hours of my time), the mother board fried once, and more recently the battery is again having a connection problem that causes the laptop to shut off on its own when on battery power. Called and was told to replace the battery (at my expense, even though I had a four warranty a faulty battery is considered a peripheral and it not covered). Not exaggerating, I'm put in 30 hours on the phone or troubleshooting b/c of Dell's poor workmanship/engineering. I'm just going to sell this junk on ebay and get another computer. please pass on the "new" Dell owned alienware. It's cheaper, looks pretty, has great specs, but it's junk.

I'd had this for about 8 months. The honeymoon is over for this computer and Alienware in general:

1) The hinge is broken due to an engineering problem (google "m11x hinge"). I've been waiting for them to fix it/address it for weeks to months now. I've spent many unnecessary hours waiting to talk to CS or getting no useful help from Customer Service. I was hung up on twice by the their service team.

2) the computer shuts off on its own (even after turning off the accelerator). I spent hours trying to fix it with their service team. the technician they sent said he was confused and could not help me and to 'call back' to open another service issue.

3) even when purchasing the thing, it was close to a 3 hour process over the phone.

4) the computer feels 'junky'. The parts (side panels), hinge, stoppers, etc are made of a cheaper plastics, glues, and have already noticeably begun to fall apart. All stoppers on teh bottom computer have come off, and one of the top stoppers that rests between the keyboard and screen has popped off.

As context, I had, cared for, and used a Dell XPS for 5 years straight with no issues due to my mishandling of the product. This is a clearly sub-quality product.

Buy another computer, and I would advise not an Alienware. It is really not worth it.

Preface This weighs about 6 1/3 pounds or so Not 11 Pounds as Amazon Has Erroneously Noted. To be honest, I never intended to spend this amount on a laptop but I am very very happy with this. What happened to me was, I originally bought a refurbished Toshiba A105 Satellite 1.66 Core 2 Duo, XP, from a very good computer seller for $799 before tax & really liked it but there were major problems with the Hard Drive which was all screwed up. I thus returned the A105 and then bought the brand new faster Tecra A8-S8513, mainly because it has XP and I didn't want to deal with Vista. I also upgraded the RAM from 1GB to 2.5 GB. All told I spent $500 plus more then the $799 I originally budgeted for because I had to use the stores credit on the refurbished notebook with problems & wanted a New Core 2 Duo with XP. The good news is I'm very happy with this as its very fast, super sturdy & built like a tank, the sound of the fan & hard drive is the lowest I've ever heard on a laptop (the refurbished A105 was way too loud), works great with the built in wireless card, is very easy to use, is relatively

light at 6oz or so. So what I'm trying to say is, if you have the money for this & want a laptop with XP, buy it and add another gig of RAM to it & you'll be very happy. My only negative is that the USB ports are in the back instead of the side like the A-105.

Bought it for a friend (with her money). She's had it exactly 2 years now and nothing major to report. Software got cluttered, but I sorted that by removing some unnecessary startups and reloaded the problem apps. Then it was soaring again.

Lately though she said it freezes occasionally. Don't know what's wrong yet.

Excellent laptop features second generation sandy bridge i3 processor which is more than capable of handling any power hungry programs. The casing is beautiful and is a quality build being a gateway. The lappy is also super cool and quiet which is a huge plus. I didn't have any problem with the mouse, in fact I found it quite responsive and the keyboard is great. I shopped around for months looking for a quality unit that is above an entry level laptop for an entry level price and this is it. Couldn't be happier with my purchase.

Intel i3 dual-core processor( two processors in one, can perform operations up to twice as fast as a single processor can), 4gb of RAM and 320 Gb of hard drive for a very low price! what are you waiting for!?!?

Bougth this laptop on black friday. wanted to update my old gateway i have had for the last 4 years. I know gateway is not one of the "best" or biggest brands out there, but i must say that this is still a great product that can go face to face with Sony, Toshiba and HP.

The only reason why i bought this laptop was because i have had a gateway for the last 4 years as i mentioned before, and never had any software or hardware problems with it. Its being 4 days since i got this laptop and it has worked perfect so far.

hardware: It is just awesome! the fact that it does not look like any other laptop out there makes it unique. The texture and desing is the keyboard is very easy and accesible, the F or "functions" keys are just very helpfull and easy to control. I think the best thing about it is that it has all you want to do built-in on the keyboard, so you don't have any " extra" keys outside the keyboard for the volume control, wifi or even changing songs. If you like simplicity and elegance, this computer will be a good choice for you for a great price, but if you thing gateway is not a good brand just get a MacBook Pro and spend $1200 on a machine that you wont even make the most out of it. Bought it essentially for school projects and my social life ( Facebook, Youtube, MSN, Skype e.t.c). I have installed two games that require lots of RAM and i can say it does the work with very smooth graphis. ( the games are WOW and AOE III)

It looks like they didn't do a very good job on the mouse pad, i have 4 main concerns about it:

1. the mouse pad was placed to the very left side of the computer, and althought i haven't had any problem when typying, like another person that did a review on this previously, i will say that it looks like they made it just for left-handed people! sometimes it gets annoying when you have to move your right hand to the very left of the computer, but i guess is just a matter of time and getting used to it.

2.The interaction with the mouse pad sometimes is a bit slow, when you put your finger on it, it takes about 1 or 2 seconds for the pad to recognize it and then you can move in the screen. I know it doesn't sound like a main concern but it will have a big effect when you are in a hurry and need to move along your windows really quick.

3. the option to scroll down and up on the page ( to the very right side of the mouse pad) sometimes just doesn't work! It seems that it only does its job when you are working on a microsoft word document but when it comes to srcoll down on an internet browser MOST of the times doesn't work.

4. They included a very nice feature on this mouse pad that i am sure most of you didn't know before. you can zoom in and out on the page that you are just by placing your two fingers next to each other and opening them(zoom in) or closing them ( zoom out), YES like a Mac! :) . Althought it's a great feature it doesn't work as perfect as it should, it frezzes or even do the oppossite SOMETIMES.

15.6" is a very descent size, i am not a a very big fan of small computers. Althought the size may seem too much for some people, i just thing is the perfect size to do just anything. it is very light and thin and it won't get warm if you keep it on a flat surface ( i guess all new computers can do that).

Overall is a great choice for a very descent price, i bought it for less than it is listed here but i will definitelly recomend this product to anyone out there willing to have a very elegant and unique product with the capabibilty of doing just anything on daily basis.

any other question? ask me i will be more than happy to answer! :)

I've had it for about 6 months now, and its lightning fast. Works good in CAD software (rhino), for minecraft it gets about 60 FPS on max settings. No complaints whatsoever. I highly recommend this product.

Honest reviews on Gateway 15.6" i3-370M 2.40 GHz Laptop | NV55C54u

I bought this for my girlfriend because she wanted a quality, reliable laptop without paying a fortune. Overall, it's a pretty good laptop. It's not a gaming machine, by any means, but that's not what it was purchased for. The negatives are as follows:

Offset touchpad This thing is so far off to the left that it's almost uncomfortable to use. It's aligned directly behind the spacebar, but due to the full numberpad, the spacebar is not centered on the laptop itself. Also, it's very easy to accidentally hit the touchpad with the edge of your hand while typing. This can cause the cursor to move to some random point in a document, or cause you to accidentally click on a link on a webpage while you're filling out an entry field. Definitely an inconvenience, and definitely something that should have been thought of when Gateway was designing this product.

Speakers Point blank, the volume level at max is still a whisper. My iPhone has louder (and better quality) speakers than this laptop does.

Those are the two major downsides to this product. It's a good laptop, but it's definitely got some flaws that people should be aware of before buying it.

I bought the Gateway NV55C56u, which is just a little update from the 54u, as a replacement for an older laptop with Windows Vista. It's performance with Windows 7 is better then the older Vista laptop, but from signon to fully ready to use is still slower then other Windows 7 Laptops. I upgraded the memmory to full 8GB for about $38 purchased from Amazon online. This was to get better performance when needed for graphic's etc. Initial setup was easy an only took a few minutes, then had to do about 8 or 9 Windows software updates once online

The screen resolution is great and shows crisp images. I do not like the keyboard as much as on other laptop as it feels and looks cheaper. I also do not care for the on switch as it also feels like low quality. The offset of the touchpad to the left is a little more then other laptops and takes a while to get used to.

I like the wireless and wired connections as it does process at a higher speed then older laptop that were 10/100. Have not used with webcam yet, but will update if I do use it

Quick summary First PC I got had problems. Did get another one and it seems to be fine so far. I have left the review below since it is an honest account of what I went through with the first one.

I have been buying PCs since the early 1980s and this is BY FAR the WORST out of box experience I have had. The PC had 5 hours of critical updates from HP and Microsoft that did not go through correctly. 18 hours later still getting errors on the PC, from HP and Windows. I have called HP customer support three times so far, have reformatted PC with customer support on the line and still am having problems.

The HP support has been horrific. The HP support is from India and once you get to a live person the support is subpar. My main HP tech support person was down right rude and HE TOLD ME THE FOLLOWING THINGS which were horrific to hear from an IT guy (and totally false by the way):

(1) do not to make Windows critical updates since they cause problems on the HP PCs

(2) HP simple pass which is an advertised security feature did not work well

(3) I should ignore all the red ! and yellow warning triangles on my pc

He basically just wanted me off the line and to live with a problem PC! The support person also had me install some software from him that hijacked internet explore and had my computer go nuts with virus warnings and I got several viruses too!..this is when I agreed to reformat my PC...the India HP tech had limited knowledge of the PC itself and refused to answer any questions on Windows 8 even when we were sitting on the phone waiting for the computer to reboot or do updates.

After reformatting the hard drive and another 5 hours of doing HP and windows updates I am still getting errors. I had already installed my last copy of MS office on this pc and am very upset at the prospect of having to buy another copy of Office out of my pocket. Ship this PC back and go out and purchase another PC. So far I have been on the phone with HP for 14 hours. HP support is the worse... My HP support person also made me deactivate a lot of the Windows 8 features on the second installation and when I protested he told me he would not support any Windows issues and I could turn them on later. When the updates were done I asked how to turn on those Windows 8 features and he told me he didn't know and that wasn't his job.

UPDATE...escalating with HP support...now they are telling me that since this 8AM Saturday they cannot do anything till Monday and they will have someone call me back then to help me return my PC and get a new one then. This is unacceptable to me because this means 2 more days without a PC than if I was helped now.

UPDATE (2 hours later) still escalating.... Now HP is telling me to pack the PC up, drive to fed ex and once they have the PC back (I purchased this from HP directly) they will ship another one to me AND then I need to either call Microsoft and ask them if they can transfer my license to a new PC OR I need to buy another copy of Microsoft office. This means I won't have a new PC for 5 + days and then I need to start the installation procedure all over again.

UPDATE (3 hours later) packing up my PC. Fedex will pick up package Monday and I will get new PC Wed. Hope this one works!

Seriously???? That much escalation to get OK service???? Looks like it will take a week to resolve the issue and get a new PC. That is a lot of down time and a lot of non productive time for me to fix their problem.

From what I saw of the PC when it was working..

1) the sound system is nice...clear and loud enough to play music on without external speakers. I played some support videos online and had the sound on one of the lowest settings and it was plenty loud. Played a few songs and the sound quality is better than any other PC I have had.

2) The webcam was also HD and the quality was nice.

3) I think I will like Windows 8 once I get used to it. There is a learning curve on this but it has some nice features.

4) Have talked to several friends who have HP and they told me their HP assist never worked well and constantly has problems with updates.

5) This is my first HP...may be my last...their PCs may be OK but their customer support is HORRIBLE!

Update:

Got the new replacement PC Wed (yesterday). Software updates process of HP and MS software took 4+ hours but went smoothly. The installation of my other programs was pain free. Still installing my files but all seems well. Still very impressed with the sound system on the PC and know I will be enjoying that once my mp3s are installed.

HP support group called me and sent me an email Monday AM and gave me a case # and a direct number to contact them if I have any more troubles. They were very nice and made me feel that my problem was a fluke and I now had good support if it wasn't. Right now it looks like their was a glitch in the software update of my first PC which threw off everything. The second issue was that I got a bad tech from their Indian support group he needs some more training on both customer service and the PC. The final issue for me is that by the time I started escalating it was Saturday morning and the US support was closed at that time.

What I should have done was to send back my first PC the second the issues started and got a new PC and escalated with HP about the fact that I had already installed MS office on the bad PC.

Update one month later:

HP contacted me several times to make sure I was happy which I thought was very nice. These calls came from someone in the US and not India. Thank goodness... I may get another HP after all. The PC is working fine. Am enjoying the sound system (which is very good for a laptop sound system) and windows 8. No other issues.

I can't resist writing a very pre-emptive review because I have great feeling about this PC. First of all, I had a Lenovo core i7 ideapad crap out after just 18 months since manufacture. The 2630QM processor was a bit consumptive and I am absolutely paranoid the chipset may have had a bit of a ticking timebomb in its workings. While I respect Lenovo's ThinkPad brand, clearly there are some to be avoided or scrutinized in the lower tiers.

So in the market was I, and after researching my target price range I had decided on the AMD A8 or AMD A-10 line, if I was lucky. After all, I have some esteem for the AMD products as I find them to function better than the sum of their parts. Plus, I could also blame Intel in large part for my prior PC woes in the chipset vicinity. The HP Envy Dv6 with AMD A8-4500M was quite compelling in my search for products, but I had my reservations not finding the A-10 version. I shopped a lot online but didn't buy.. still waiting for the right deal.

So off I went for some family time, but on my way I happened to pass a Staples and couldn't resist stopping in to see if anything called me. Well, in fact, they have some phenomenal deals and no-nonsense powerful PCs. Indeed they had the dv6 Envy A8-4500M model which I tried extensively. However their best deal was a $500 core i5 Envy at $150 cheaper.

Needless to say I was forced to buy Intel again, but I can't regret it much. The computer is blazing fast. However what I really want to emphasize in this review is the excellent build quality. The mostly aluminum case is rigid and the chicklet keys have a fantastic feel. The cooling fan pushes out nothing but cold air and the Beats Speakers are definitely a bump up in laptop speaker output. Trackpad seems like great quality also.

There is one MAJOR drawback ... the screen viewing angles are weak with dark tones, and the resolution is .. by todays standards.. quite BLAH or even BLEH. However with brighter tones (like this web page) the angles are quite good. And it is blindingly bright. Connectivity excellent w Bluetooth and USB 3,0.

Overall, the intel internals are nothing to scoff at. However, there is NO reason not to strongly consider the dv6-7210us which is quite a competent overall system which is capable of a higher windows experience index number with a few small modifications (this PC will be GPU restricted for a lower overall score). So this review is mainly to APPLAUD hp for doing what other PC manufactures haven't done basically ever: make a computer with a good CPU near the top of the line (AMD A8 also) in an excellent form factor with no major bottlenecks in quality anywhere. Ok, the screen isn't amazing, but everything has it's price and as the one factor I can see separating this from a $2200 mac pro, I could care less. I can still give a 5*.

Also, Bravo! to Staples for carrying far better PC's than any other big box retailer I've come across (best buy, walmart and friends, Costco). Almost all of their PCs were desirable and they even had the blazing fast Core i7 Toshiba for $630 all holiday season!

It took a brutal bludgeoning of market share by Mac and tablets, and a massive blow to share price, but on a price to performance AND build quality ratio this machine is something you've been waiting for.

I had an awful experience when I first purchased the computer. It came with corrupted files. There was an icon on it to fix the problem. I made the mistake of following the instructions and wound up buying a service contract to repair the computer. I know Amazon will take back the computer with no questions but by the time I realized that it was too late. I wasted over $250 because of my own stupidity. A couple of days later Amazon reminded me that I had 15 days to send the computer back. I did so and got a replacement. I am generally pleased with the the dv6-722us. I had the same computer with Windows 7. My wife loved it so I gave it to her and bought the new one with Windows 8. To me the Windows 8 operating system is not an improvement. It takes a little getting used to but it is not difficult to learn. Overall this has been a good purchase. If I had not had the terrible experience with the first computer it would been an excellent purchase. Word to the wise, if it doesn't look right to begin with, put it back in the box immediately and send it back.

I absolutely LOVE this laptop! I love the large screen and its crystal clear display. I love the keys and their spacing since I have big hands. The numeric key pad is a plus too. Intel Core i5 processor, check! ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6370 Graphics, check! Blu Ray player, check! Countless features to add simplicity and mobility to all my computing needs, check! This thing is fast! Set-up took all of 10 minutes and I was blazing through the Net in no time at all. This laptop has everything I want it to have with the small exception of built-in bluetooth. But that's minor since I can easily purchase a USB Bluetooth adapter for $20. I really thought there would be a noticeable difference in the speed and/or performance when compared to my desktop which has 8GB RAM. But, I have been pleasantly surprised and I may not even need to upgrade from the included 4GB. I also like that it has built in features to conserve battery life when not connected to the power cord. It automatically adjusts certain settings to optimize performance and then automatically readjusts when connected to the power cord. Overall this is a great laptop and I would definitely recommend it. This thing is so nice that I think I'll barely use my desktop now.

Pros: bright screen, great keypad, good "entry level" speakers, fast enough for writing & web surfing

Cons: "clicking" sound from left hinge

I really only use my laptop for my writing assignments and to check email...This laptop is perfect for that. Some back story that would be helpful: This is the 3rd laptop I have purchased in my endeavor to find a replacement for my Toshiba Satellite which has lasted over 5 years. I bought and RETURNED another entry-level Satellite as well as a Gateway; long story short, they weren't better than this Lenovo.

As far as typing goes, it was/is bit of a transition to switch from a basic laptop keypad to one with the numeric keypad at the right something I've never had in a laptop. The good news is that my hand & finger placement on this laptop do not "feel" shifted to the left like they do on the Toshiba Satellite. And there is plenty of space for my large fingers.

2.2 GHz processor and 4 GB of ram is all I need for what I do. I don't "game" or do any heavy graphics editing on this laptop. The boot up is quick and applications start very quickly. I have noticed on the Toshiba that when I listened to music and opened other applications that the music would "stutter" or pause while the processor caught up with the application. That was NOT the case with this Lenovo and multi-tasking is effortless here.

As I stated above, I also like to listen to music when I work which can be a trial on most entry level laptops. The speakers on this Lenovo are really good way better than the Toshiba (sounded like cell phone speakers) and is as good or better than the Gateway. Remember, this is a basic laptop so you won't be able to jam out with big bass.

One thing that bugs me about this Lenovo: when you flip up the screen and push it all the way back, the left hinge makes this "clicking" sound. The sound repeats when you wiggle the screen back & forth at this point. I'm believe it's the "build" of the laptop and not a mechanical fault as I noticed it on the floor model. I can live with it, personally. I've never noticed anything like it on other laptops, but when you're buying in this price range, you have to take the bad with the good.

Overall, if this laptop will be for you, it will suit your needs if you'll be only doing the basic administrative type tasks. If you're purchasing this for a "gamer," it won't be powerful enough.

I bought this for my 12 yr old son.

I was looking for a Lenovo machine because I've had very good experience with a number of Lenovo machines.

This one is also great!! My son runs a number of game packages, including supporting his MineCraft server.

It has delivered solid performance and great reliability at a significant discount to a new machine. I also bought a referb Lenovo desk top which has also been absolutely solid.

We've had the notebook for nearly a year and the desk top for about 9 mo; both Lenovo referbs from Amazon, both solid, reliable machines.
