I bought this laptop after my HP died prematurely. The design and aesthetics of this Dell caught my eye as did the 6GB of memory and the huge hard drive. In hindsight, though I like this computer so far, I wish I'd shopped more extensively and looked at more laptops in the flesh.

I dove into my control panel (not that easy for me with Windows 8) and see that I have a Windows Experience Index of 5.2 on this Dell. (using a scale of 1-9.9) Other numbers: hard disc 5.9, Processor 7.2, Memory 7.4, Graphics 5.2, Gaming Graphics 6.4.

The computer comes in a plain Dell box with a power cord and minimal documentation and user help. Even the digital user's guide found on the computer hard drive is minimally helpful. In contrast my dearly departed HP came with lots of printed documentation and a large fold out schematic.

Likes -

The red outer case It's quite good looking.

The comfortable keypad

The huge hard drive

Responsive touchpad

The sound is actually pretty good for a laptop. Using a FiGO mini speaker I get excellent sound quality.

Picture quality is excellent. Watching movies or viewing photos on this computer is a treat.

Issues -

I'd have liked more printed help and documentation than the two extremely thin pamphlets.

Don't look for free programs and aps on the hard drive. This Dell has bare bones content with mostly just what would normally come with windows. There's a "free" thirty day trial of McAfee virus program that was $80 to renew. When I deleted the program to install a Trend program, McAfee offered a 20 dollar discount on renewal.

Windows 8 I'm not crazy about it, but the new system is not nearly as bad as I had anticipated. Learn the shortcuts involving the windows key and navigation becomes much faster and smoother.

You'll need two hands to open the laptop with its tight hinges.

The speed is Ok, but not as impressive as I thought it would me. I only strain the system with my photos and even when working on photos there are occasional hiccups and slow responses.

Price I found out afterward that this same computer could have been bought at Costco for about a hundred dollars less. Since I'm not a member, the cost of joining Costco and then paying sales tax would have negated any savings.

Bottom line So far so good. I'm happy but not deliriously so.

I bought this for my husband for his birthday, a little worried about how he would like the specs on it. HE LOVES IT! The only problem he has with it is windows 8, it's going to take awhile to figure a fraction of everything out, but from what I've heard from friends who have windows 8 that its a tough operating program to understand.

I've had my new baby for just a few days now, but I absolutely ADORE her!!! She seems to have everything I need in a laptop. Windows 8 is a little quirky at first, but I'm learning my way around it and I'm confident that I'm going to like it better than 7. She is quick to power on and off and downloading the programs I need to run my jewelry business (http://www.etsy.com/shop/OracleMoonJewelry). I am so blissfully happy with this sexy candy-apple red laptop!!! She's my first Dell, and I have a feeling I made a wise decision!

New OS not that friendly. Nice screen. Pretty fast. Very nice look and feel. A bit heavy to pack around. But the big screen makes up for it.

I have been disappointed with the construction of my previous three laptops which is why I looked into something sturdier and the Panasonic TOughbook CF-F9 delivered. There is nothing cheap about this product. With so many power settings, the battery lasts so much longer than my previous laptops. I love the built-in handle as it allows me quick exit from the airport security check line without having to store it back in the case. I attend many meetings where the main meeting is broken up into smaller sub-meetings and this is perfect for that environment too. It was about 3x more than what I have paid for in the past, but the quality is justified so far.

My organization bought a pair of these last year for use in our research site. Our research site is in the rainforest and is solar powered though most electronics suffer from the humidity.

The humidity didn't get to our tough books; the tough books had simple and annoying problems. Keyboards that got stuck (not due to eating around it), both the mouse tracking pads broke, not to mention the batteries needed to be replaced very quickly.

I wouldn't be writing such a negative review if it weren't for both of our tough books having such similar problems. It also doesn't help that various employees have 'netbooks' that have outlasted and out performed our expensive toughbook.

I just recently purchased the CF-F9, and so far I've been nothing but impressed by it. The battery life (at a max of 7 hours) is simply incredible and one of the main reasons for pulling the trigger on it. The magnesium alloy case is definetly one of the best i've seen. In my job we normally work with the Panasonic brand of toughbooks quite a bit, and most often in the field, so I was already aware of how reliable they are. This was actually a risk to buy... as there aren't many reviews about it online. Well hope this helps someone in their decision, I'll definitely be taking this with me for my next combat deployment.

The title says it all. You get good hardware for the money, but the nightmare was a holy nightmare. After unistalling all the "multi-gesture" features and software, it's at least usable. I can't recall if I ended up using a synaptic driver or default windows drivers after it was all said and done. It was for a customer, and I told her to return it to me if it was unusable. So far she has not. Maybe everybody is not as picky as me?

Best Deals for ASUS F75A-EH51 17.3-Inch Laptop

It's a nice laptop at a good price, but Windows 8 is everything it shouldn't be. An entirely unintuitive operating system. I installed a start button, on a 7 emulator, which helps but doesn't fix it.

I would happily give the laptop itself 5 stars.

Awesome I would reccomend this. Very easy to use and I love the app style where everything is right there in front of you where it's quicker to get to the things you need to.

I have a 4 1/2 year old Dell laptop and I thought it was time to replace it with a newer laptop. I have had no problems whatsoever with my Dell in all that time. I fully expected and wanted to buy a new Dell with a 17 inch screen but the prices seemed a bit high. By the way I'm a "Make or buy American" guy and I have been in Austin, Texas where the Dell headquarters is/was(?). I made the minor mistake of asking one of our computer whizzes at work what he thought about Dells and he gave me that vague look and speech "Dells are OK" but then he said "I've heard a lot of good stuff about ASUS". So I looked up ASUS up on the internet and all I saw was an address in California...my search stopped there and I thought I was getting an American brokered (at least) computer. ASUS was cheaper because it's all foreign.

Epilogue:

-The DVD player skips and burps, even on brand new disks.

-Going to the Start screen interrupts or stops other functions.

-I'm not sure if the Instant On feature is giving me the good and refreshing benefits of a cold start.

-It just doesn't seem that much faster than my 4 1/2 year old Dell laptop.

I'm just kinda' surprised.

I have to first say that I have had this less than one week. The first impressions have been love at first sight: the look, the feel, the weight, the speed... Amazing, really! The SSD is great and makes the laptop wake up lightning fast.

Now for the cons... Today the display driver acted up twice while watching videos. I find this is unacceptable for a machine of this pedigree. It also seems to get very hot at times, and mind you I live in an environment where the room temperature is in the 60-70F temp range wonder how it works in a hotter environment?!

I will update this review once I have more input...

Picked it up yesterday. i wanted a clean Windows 7 install so i used the HP Recovery Manager. Then chose System Recovery. It rebooted and then gave me the option of a 'minimized image recovery'. This took about 35 minutes with numerous reboots.

Once done I had a nice, fresh OS install with just the necessary stuff (including HP Recovery Manager )

Oh yeah, had 46 updates to install but that's another story. I also updated the BIOS to the latest version. F15 A.

Kudos to HP/Compaq for giving us the option to setup our systems with no bloatware.

Good basic machine for the average user. NO HDMI, webcam, or memory card reader but a lot of folks do not need those frills.

I found this laptop at Bestbuy online Saturday for $299 and had to grab it. I checked every site and it was the best deal for the price. It is a great basic laptop and the AMD V Series I believe is a Sempron which was AMDs way to compete with Intel way back when processors were expensive. I always prefered AMD because they were cheaper and reliable. The Athlons were great, and much cheaper than the Intel Pentium so Intel came up with the Celeron to compete with the lower price Athlon. AMD fired back with the Sempron which was even cheaper yet, and a good over all processor. I kind of got away from the PC world after that so I am not sure how things are now. I think the Celerons never really hit it big, but I can say that my wife's Compaq with the Sempron lasted 5 years with not one issue. She used it daily for normal everyday computing and loved it. We just replaced it a month ago and gave it to our friend who feels it is as good as any newer laptop for surfing, using word and excel, and watching You-Tube. Her only complaint to us has been when she opens up dozens of windows by mistake (being new to the internet) she finds that the Sempron slows up a bit, but as she is learning to get rid of the pop up screens etc. she is not having any problems.

I purchased this CQ62 and when I took it out of the box I was impressed on how quick it was and for what we need it is perfect. As an entry level laptop I highly recommend it. I think I even got 5% cash back by using my Discover Card and a coupon which brought it down to $250 which made it even cheaper. Keep a look out its still on sale in the stores at $299 and backordered online. It is worth it in my opinion. This V series is for my father who does the basic surfing, watching vids, e-mailing etc. and he loves it.

Oh as for my wife, we replaced her Compaq Sempron with an HP G72-B66 because she liked the 17" screen and when I saw that on a promo sale at Staples in November for $475 with an Intel I3 360 processor, 500 GB HD, and 4 GB memory It seemed like a good deal so I grabbed it. She is happy with that also, but is having trouble getting used to the funky mouse pad on these HP G models. other than that it seems like a good laptop for the price. I have been watching these prices and they seem to hover around $550 so I guess we did get a good deal. I know nothing about I3 cores, yada yada compared to AMD Phenem's and they seem to be in the same price range so thats why I decided to try to give the Intel a try.

In conclusion, I think both of these laptops are great. The Compaq serves it needs for the low price, and the HP G72 has more bells and whistles but again it was $200 more but seems to be rated very well. Forgive my long review and my lack of the new technology. LOL, I actually work on the large Mainframe computers and all I knew about these Brands lately is that my Mainframe Changed from Digital to HP, then somhow HP and Compaq became an entity. Thats the extent of my computer exp. Correct me if I am way behind on things.

This is a great product, but be aware that most of the product details listed on the Ideapad U460 page are actually for the Ideapad U460s a different computer in the series that is not yet released, but has better processing and battery life capabilities (like the ones mentioned in the description). Find a U460-specific description on Lenovo's official webpage.

This is my second laptop the first was a Lenovo as well, but HUGE this is such an improvement thin and light, and even more portable because the battery will last about 5 and a half hours, and it doesn't get hot. There's a power-saving feature, which minimizes energy usage at the touch of a button, but I haven't noticed much difference between that and the normal setting.

The screen brightness will adjust depending on the light setting you're in, which is convenient, and when I videochat, people have told me that the microphone will filter out background noise.

I think the laptop is only running on 2GB RAM, which is doing well with Windows 7 for the programs that I use, but I do notice a little lag when I'm opening up big photo files. The startup only takes about 2 minutes though a huge step up from my last computer. If you're planning on doing more intensive visual stuff, I would recommend adding some extra RAM, but the screw-on panel at the bottom makes that easy to do.

The one complaint I have is that the touchpad is a little finicky it'll zoom in and out when I'm just trying to scroll, and to click with the button, you have to make sure you press all the way down.

Best Deals for Lenovo IdeaPad 088525U Notebook PC - Core i3 i3-330UM 1.20 GHz

Has been an excellent laptop light, good screen and hybrid graphics. The hybrid graphics drivers are customized for the machine by Lenovo.

Lenovo has not updated the graphics drivers -creating a problem with Windows updateWindows update will not enable the Win 7 sp1 download because it (correctly) detects a driver software conflict. Calls (multiple) to Lenovo support have not been helpful. I have tried multiple workarounds without successmanual driver updates cause loss of graphic switching functionality-each time I needed to revert

If you purchase this unit you will end up in driver purgatory with me.

I just received this today. My first impressions are very good. The built quality and style are excellent. It has the best keyboard I have ever used on a laptop and I have had a lot of laptops including Macbooks. The keyboard is not back-lit but with the black keys on silver background they are easy to see in dim light. Much better than laptops with black keys on black background. After having and trying many laptops I find the keyboard is very important. Also Lenovo is consistently rated among the top for service and reliability. The closet to Apple. I think this compares well to the Macbook Pro 13". Compared to the Macbook Pro this has a better keyboard, is lighter and has a 14" screen. I have always liked the 13.3" laptops, but the 14" is noticeably larger. If you want Mac OS, than the Macbook is your only option. And I have to say at this point I do prefer Mac OS X to Windows 7. But that may change with Windows 8. Anyhow, I think this is an excellent laptop. It has the first gen i3 processor but also has the Nvidia graphics. These can be found for under $500 refurbished on Amazon or eBay. If you do not need a super light laptop this is hard to beat for under $500. And this is one of the lightest 14" notebooks on the market. Lenovo does sell the updated models with the second gen i5 processor for about $700. I choose this over the Lenovo Edge E420, which is going for around the same price. Main reasons are, this model is lighter and has better battery life. Also the black on silver vs black on black keyboard. Other things about this laptop to note. The sound is decent, not very loud but not tinny at full volume. The trackpad is not large, but is works well as does the trackpad buttons. It also has a finger print reader which is helpful is you use a password. Just slide your finger across the reader and you are logged in. If your budget allows take a look at the new U300s, U300 and U400 lenovo models. The are coming out on November 1st. The U400 being the update to this model. That would be my choice is I was OK with the $850 price. Also note this laptop does not have a built in DVD. This keeps it lighter. The Edge E420 does have a DVD. I will update this after I spend more time with this laptop.

** Update 11/24/11 **

Not as happy as I was. The more I use the keyboard I realize the keys are too shallow, not enough travel. The screen is very glossy and battery life is OK. I am considering selling it and getting the ThinkPad Edge E420 or E425.

HIGHLY SATISFIED!!! I bought my refurbished from MawishInc for about 5 months ago and it has been amaizing. I'm surprised that the price on this item just keeps on getting lower and lower. I got mine with 1gb of ram but I upgrade it to 2gb and it's a super fast computer. Much faster then any of my vista computers with more ram and ghz. The monitor is small on today's HD stuff, but the graphics card is amazing. Mine can go up to 1920x1200 with no lag on any monitor. With my shipment, I got this item with the charger and all the slots in this item worked, and still works... (thank you MawishInc). I recommend this product. (maybe not used but professionally refurbished).

I have to admit, I was a bit concerned when I first purchased this product and was waiting on shipment because I realized there was an SLI version for only $200 more. However, when I received this laptop, IT CAME WITH A GT750M SLI ALREADY INSTALLED (not to mention the bluray player as well!). This laptop config is WELL worth the price with the 4th gen i7 processor, 16 gb of ram, 1TB of HD and 24gb of SSD, and TWO nvidia GT750M SLI! I instantly downloaded all my games and booted up Guild Wars 2 first. It ran like a CHARM; all settings maxed and doing World Vs World with huge battles.

I am upgrading from an Alienware m11x R1 and I don't think I have EVER had a gaming experience as amazing as this one. I recommend this to ANYONE looking for a gaming laptop at an affordable price that can play ANY game on the market right now with all settings max.

As other reviews have mentioned, there were some discrepancies with Amazon's description of this product in regards to the supposed model number. Amazon's info is a bit all over the place on the product listing, but we have confirmed that this is, as far as I know, the BEST Y510P spec/bundle out there. This model is not even available on Lenovo's site (I checked regularly for a system spec'd like this), and those on Lenovo site were also not as good of a deal price-wise. At time of purchase, Amazon's price was $1,179.99 (MSRP is $1,299.99).

This PC includes the following:

-Intel i7-4700MQ (2.4GHz, up to 3.40 GHz. 6MB Cache)

-16GB RAM

-1TB HDD

-24GB Cache SSD

-Nvidia GT750M built-in

-Nvidia GT750M Ultra-Bay module (to make the system SLI GT750M)

-BluRay BD-RE/DVDRW Ultra-Bay module (swap-able with SLI module) [YES, IT BURNS BLU-RAYS IT SEEMS, this is an expensive drive!]

-1920x1080 Anti-Glare LED Back-lit Screen (another good rarity as the others I found are a glossy screen, such as those on Lenovo's site)

-Plus the usual slew of standard features found on most laptops these days (USB 3.0, USB 2.0 [with always on capability], phones/mic ports, Kensington lock slot, 720P webcam w/ dual mics, card-reader, HDMI, VGA, LAN, Bluetooth).

Fit 'n' Finish:

Knowing Lenovo's high quality already, as I've worked on many laptops throughout the years, I knew this was going to be a solid system. The whole system has a very nice fit and feel, rather classy in a way too. It's overall very tight with solid build quality featuring brushed metal on the top surfaces such as the lid and the area surrounding the keyboard/touch-pad, accents in red. Considering how powerful of a system it is, I was surprised by how thin and light it felt, especially compared to what I was coming from (ASUS G60JX). The system is very aesthetically pleasing. Also, being a fan of the red/black color scheme, this was very attractive to me. The keyboard has an adjustable back-light, which illuminates the keys in a red color (most notable in darker settings). Keyboard is very pleasing to type on. I use a mechanical keyboard on my desktop system and this one has a nice tactile response reminiscent of a mechanical. Another big point for me, and a must-have, is the inclusion of the number-pad. I cannot use a laptop without a number-pad as I frequently use it for work. Most 15" models do not include them, requiring buyers to step up to a 17" or larger to get one. This Lenovo has a number-pad which means it was ahead of many of the competing models right from the get-go in my eyes. Onto the touch-pad, it is rather large and surprised me with how many functions it has. The software allows many different gestures (incorporating multiple fingers if you so please), settings, and etc. Sensitivity of the touch-pad is also quite nice, but I had to turn it down a bit for me and increase the resistance to wrist movement. Out of the box, the touch-pad settings were a little too touchy, but spending the time to adjust them to your liking is definitely worth your time.

File/Desktop Performance:

The system has run flawlessly since I received it. It's very fast and gets increasingly faster as you use it (as this is how the 24GB SSD cache functions). The more you use the PC, the more it figures out which files are being processed frequently and adds them to the cache. Lenovo uses ExpressCache (pre-installed and configured), so you do not have to do anything additional to start to see the benefits. The 16GB of ram is also nice to have (and the same amount I have in my desktop system). I tend to load up a PC with applications like Photoshop, multiple browsers with a ridiculous amount of open tabs, and more at all times, which tends to eat up RAM like it's a delicious cookie. Having the 16GB RAM is definitely awesome in this regard as, much like my home system, I have not been able to come close to full utilization; however, even on an 8GB system, I start to slow them down. System has been very responsive and a pleasing experience to use. Programs launch instantly, which is always nice. When it comes to PCs, I need them high performance and running fast or I get cranky.

Display:

The display is quite nice as it's a Full-HD (1080P) LED back-lit LCD with anti-glare (matte) screen. As I mentioned above, all the other systems (or at least those on the Lenovo website) come with a glossy screen (which was the only thing I was not too excited about). When I received this and noticed the anti-glare, I was pleasantly surprised. Using this system mostly for work being under fluorescent lights, I was very happy that this had anti-glare. The screen also boasts very good brightness and a large range of adjustable brightness. The color accuracy and over-all picture is quite good for right out of the box (I will calibrate with Nvidia controls later, but no rush). Having a resolution like 1080P in a 15" model is nice as you really cannot notice individual pixels like on a much larger screen. On my home system, I use a 27" screen and the difference is quite noticeable.

Sound:

The stock JBL speakers were surprising when I first used them. I loaded up some music and I thought something was wrong initially. These little laptop speakers actually have some bass response! My ASUS (while featuring Altec Lansing) had a rather shrill, bright sound with very little low-end response (and nothing below around 500Hz). These speakers on the Lenovo are a big improvement. Not only do they have low-end response, but they get rather loud also, which is a pleasant surprise. I listened to quite a few tracks of music and while they are not audiophile quality like my home or car setups, these are the best laptop speakers I've used yet. Plenty good enough for listening to some tunes while at work, watching videos/movies, or playing games.

Gaming:

Why did I purchase a SLI-GT750M laptop for work?! Well, let's just say sometimes it gets boring at work (or if I'm away from home for any substantial length of time)! Anyway, the other night I loaded up Rise of the Triad (2013 re-boot by Interceptor Entertainment / Apogee) and set the game on "Ludicrous" (it's highest settings). I loaded up the first level on the highest difficultly and had myself a fun-filled frag-fest. The game ran beautifully with all the eye candy turned on. While that game is not the most cutting edge game out there graphically, it still looks good with the eye candy turned up and is a fast paced type game where having anything but a high frame-rate is unacceptable. Also, I had been playing this at home on my i7-3770K @ 4.8GHz and over-clocked AMD 7970 (clearly a more powerful system), but the enjoyment level was just as good on both. I loaded up a few other games for a quick spin and again was very surprised, usually being able to do at least "high" settings, but obviously some games on their tip-top settings would leave a less than desireable frame-rate. Over-all, however, this laptop provided a much better gaming experience than I would have expected. I'm quite happy that I decided to get the system with the SLI GT750M as that definitely helps (and most games support SLI these days). I should also mention that the sound quality coming from the JBL speakers while playing games was quite good as well. There was plenty enough sound with no distortion to become fully immersed in game-play, which is exactly what you want from your speakers.

Conclusion:

This was purchased mostly as my work laptop. As a desktop system builder, tweaker, overclocker, etc, I have very little patience with a slow system. This system is quite an awesome upgrade from my ASUS G60JX as it blows it away in every way possible and is a much better fit to my desktop system. Lenovo builds a quality system (as I know from doing repairs on various systems throughout the years) and this one does not disappoint. I really cannot complain about anything so far as it's exceeded my expectations thus far. Time will tell how it holds up, but I'm confident it will be good. Lenovo is the number one laptop I recommend to people who ask me for laptop advice and so far, that recommendation has always proved solid as the systems really are built well. It's a dream to work on and I actually look forward to turning it on (or waking it from sleep as I usually do), both of which are very quick. The fact that I can also do some high-quality gaming, movie-watching, and listen to tunes and not have my ears cringe are all positives as well. I highly recommend this system. I am not going to spend much time commenting on the Windows 8 as I know some people are sketchy about it. I personally have been using Windows 8 on my desktop system since last year (and currently using the 8.1 Preview, which has some great changes and additions, coming official in the Fall). I thoroughly like W8 after configuring it to my preferences.

If I had to make any gripes, it would be battery-life. It can get about 3 hours, but I wasn't really expecting much more than that on a standard capacity battery. Also, Lenovo does install quite a few apps from the factory, however they really don't slow the system down, so it's not a huge deal. I just disable and uninstall the ones I do not want / will not use. Both of these are fairly minor gripes considering the positives of this system.

I will update later if I come across anything else worth mentioning, also feel free to ask any questions you may have in the comments section.

UPDATE: I installed the Blu-Ray Ultra-bay module... It's actually a Blu-Ray BD-RE drive, so it can burn to Blu-Ray disc. Pretty damn awesome if you ask me as these drives aren't cheap by any means! I thought it was only a Blu-Ray player / DVDRW combo, not the case. The part is a MATSHITA BD-MLT UJ262 (look it up if you want) featuring Panasonic Blu-Ray lens (judging by the Panasonic logo on the top). I've also added some pictures to the User Photos on the Amazon listing, so, check it out!

UPDATE 2: Battery life improves if you disable SLI in Nvidia control panel OR remove the GT750M Ultra-bay module in favor of the BD/DVD drive. Last night during testing of the BD/DVD drive, I was getting over 3 hours.

UPDATE 3: The USB ports on this system have a great feel to them. They are very tight and have a nice definitive click when inserting a device. Another thing which is nice, and was part of my reason for Lenovo, is that the headphone and microphone jacks are metal barrel. It's far too often that the plastic barrel jacks break if you jolt them while something is plugged into them. The steel barrel jacks definitely hold up better I've noticed. Also, the fact that the barrel is tightly fitted into the chassis means that there is no wiggle room for the jack to move around again strengthening the jack by adding rigidity and no possible way for it to shift and break, unlike how most companies employ the plastic type.

UPDATE 4: Windows 8 Pro Performance Assessment results:

Processor: 7.8

Memory (RAM): 7.8

Graphics: 7.7

Gaming graphics: 7.7

Primary Hard Disk: 6.9

Pretty solid results. Windows 7 had a max rating of 7.9, Win 8's max is now 9.9. The HDD performance is better than I had anticipated considering I rarely see regular HDD's score higher than 5.9 unless they're under RAID-0.

Best Deals for Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p 15.6-Inch Laptop (Metal - Dusk Black)

Differences between the $999 Y510p and this one, that make this one a much better deal:

1. this one comes with the maximum 16 Gigabytes of RAM installed (2x8GB), the $999 one only has 8 GB (2x4GB)

2. this one has the 24 GB solid state drive installed, the other one does not come with a SSD

4. this one has a writable internal Blu Ray drive included for the Ultrabay, the other one does not. To install the Blu Ray you slide out the SLI graphics card.

Now, these are 3 pretty major upgrade items included for an extra 180 bucks especially considering you cannot even buy Ultrabay peripherals from Lenovo at this time. In other words, this one is fully loaded with every upgrade as soon as you open the box.

Honest reviews on Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p 15.6-Inch Laptop (Metal - Dusk Black)

I have had the y510p for about 5 days. Other than being a finger print magnet I found it to be a extremely fast laptop. The screen is NOT glossy but has a fine textured antiglare finish. I have a dell 2713h and it is every bit as good! Nicest screen I have seen on a laptop other than a retina display. The keyboard is very comfortable and has a good feel to it. Like the backlighting and easy to adjust brightness. The only drawback is the 5200 rpm hdd which I am swapping out with an ssd. I will move the hd to the drive bay as I rarely need the second graphics card. Not a big issue.

There seems to be a change where the 4600 intel graphics chip is being used most of the time rather than the gpu's. works great at 1440 or 1080 using hdmi. I can only assume Lenovo is trying to address the low run times reported by some users. The fans are quiet unless you are heavy gaming. Not sure how much the cash sad helps but is seems quick to boot and load programs. Faster than I expected. This is really the first laptop that really has some power. I have a VAIO i5 and It feels like a net book in comparison.I bought it to run autocad and pcb pads and it handles those programs amazingly well. I do not want another "tower",

I am not a gamer per se and was really looking for a high performance machine and I found it at an extremely good price. I have been running windows 8 for some time and still learning to drive it. I think I have passed the threshold of frustration and now beginning to enjoy it.

There seemed to be a lot of complaints with the trackpad, however, the one I have works great! No complaints. the speakers are "ok" but was expecting more.

In summary.

Plus: keyboard, performance and the screen is amazing! USB ports are fast.

Cons: bit heavy, hard to keep case clean of finger prints, and documentation. Glossy bezel around screen could be better. The USB ports etc. are up front and cabling gets in the way (minor complain). No type "n" on wireless, It is not easy to rest on your lap in the summer.....

All in all the performance is certainly capable of competing with any upper mid range DIY desktop without needing a set of wheels to move it. I am impressed and hopefully I can say the same thing in a year from now. And one more thing about the display. It is usable outdoors. It is much brighter than other laptops on is much easier to view than my ipad or iPhone. Lenovo made a really good decision to use a top quality panel!

Hi I don't normally do reviews but I felt it was needed for this laptop. Let me first start off by telling you I have experience with computers a lot and I currently own a gaming desktop as well. Also, i wanted to clear up any confusion of whats included, because if youre like me at all you research for days to find the right pc with the best options. Lets get started.

Features

This laptop comes with many features. I bought the one specced with 16gb ram, dua NVidia 750m's (sli, well get more into later), 4th gen i7-4700 haswell processor, and 15.6" 1080p antiglare screen. the cpu is clocked at 2.4ghz with smart boost technology that will automatically overclock to 3.4 ghz if the cpu is in need (mostly for gaming. This model does actually come with a 6-in-1 sd card reader/writer, 2 3.0 usb slots, 1 2.0 slot, hdmi output and stand rj45 Ethernet connection port. Feautring a 720p camera for supposed hd video calling. Last but not least, this model definitely includes a blu ray player, I have inserted and successfully installed it.

Gaming

I mostly bought this laptop for the intent of gaming when im not at my pc and also for running AutoCAD and various other design programs im taking through college. This laptop performs beautifully and at a cheap price of $1279.99 at the time of purchase. When I got the laptop I, it does in fact come with an NVidia 750m installed into the ultrabay. With this sli onfiguration, I can run Battlefield 3 on ultra at 30 fps and on high at 75 fps, Skyrim on ultra at 60 fps, starcraft 2 WoL and HotS on ultra at 140 fps. I also got the chance to beta test Elder Scrolls Online ;p that runs maxed out at 60 fps. SO, what im saying is these graphics cards are certainly here to stay for quite a few future games.

Ultrabay

This model features the ultrabay where you can swap out the current NVidia card for a blu ray, a better card, a fan, or even a ssd. However, at the moment I do not know where you can buy these peripherals so ill update it if ever find out, more on that later.

Optical Drive

Now ive definitely had some extensive tests and issues with the optical drive that comes bundled into this computer. I will tell you now, it is 100% possible to play blu rays as I have watched 3 since I figured it out. When my package arrived, the box containing the optical drive just said removable dvd burer, upon opening you will learn it is the Matshita bd-uj262 blu ray reader/writer drive! Now, a few people have complained about having to upgrade Cyberlink Power DvD (used to play your dvds in the drive, like a windows media player) and others saying just download a program that plays blu ray. I can assert with confidence you 100% HAVE to upgrade, an extra $71, which if you don't really care about blu ray playback isn't a problem, but I really enjoy movies and blu ray. The reason I know its this way is I did download several other programs to get it to work and it never worked so I just bought the upgrade. However, after the upgrade they still didn't work, so I called Lenovo and tried to figure this out. Apparently our "Dual nvidias" are built into "one removable unit" rendering the blu ray use less sinc it needs a graphics card to play. Knowing a lot about computer I called B******* on that. One of the cards is built into the computer permanently, and in order for your omputer to recognize its there, you must update the intel onboard graphics, then nvidias, then it will work. SO, after much hassle I finally got it to work and I cannot ven begin to express how satisfied I am with the beauty of the picture. If you cant get your blu ray working, just comment or email me (wilkinsontaylor33@yahoo.com). Id love to help.

JBL Speakers

Not much to say hear, they have a pseudo-5.1 surround but the bass isn't too deep but what do you expect from laptop speakers :p I think theyre fine as I use external speakers and headphones anyway!

Trackpad

A lot has been said about the trackpad being bad, and I agree to an extent, but heres why. There is no separate buttons so the whole thing is usable for mouse cursor movement, which can get annoying but its no biggie for me as I use an external mouse anyway.

Power

The battery last around 3 hours playing basic games like minecraft, however if youre using to play music while you clean up or do homework you can get around 4.5 hours!

Storage

Comes with 1tb HDD and a 24gb cache ssd. Now, I have had the laptop 2 days and alreay noticing a difference with the ssd. The more you use a certain program or file (such as startup, and games) the faster the computer will load these. cool feature I think!

Misc

Havent tried the usb 3.0 yet but it does have a solid grasp on usbs plugged in(plugged my mouse in for a bit). The keyboard is reminiscent of my Cherry MX RED mechanical keyboard, tacktile feedback with slightly more resistance. Heat ventilation vents out the sides of the graphics cards and also out the bottom. As of now my internl temp n any component hasn't gone above 72 degrees celcius. Not bad for 6 hours of skyrim :p I have read the a cooling pad drastically reduces that number as well.

All in all, Im very very happy with this laptop, considering everything you get the $1279.99+$71.00 for that software you have to get is an amazing price. I wanted to do this in depth review for those out there skeptical of the laptop and whats in it and how t runs. I guarantee you wont be disappointed in it! If you have any questions, again comment or email me (wilkinsontaylor33@yahoo.com) Id love to help!

I bought this laptop to use as my Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). I wasn't looking to spend too much, but I wanted a minimum spec, which this laptop filled. Most important was a dual core processer. The i5 in this machine is plenty powerful enough for my use. I also wanted a 7200rpm hard drive this one has it. I did upgrade the RAM to the full 16GB (an extra $88 in Crucial memory) the machine comes with 4GB and is upgradable to 16GB. That upgrade took all of 1 minute. All in, I spent under $700 for a laptop that could have easily cost $900 or more.

I love the look of this thing. It's big, with a large screen. Might not be a great traveling laptop, but for my needs it is exactly what I want.

Everything arrived in new condition. Fired it up out of the box and installed the updates. NO bloat ware to deal with at all, really. Just some HP tools that you don't need enable. This laptop is clean and PERFECT for my use. No processing issues when recording music I get about 4 or 5ms latency using ASIO drivers I can get similar latency with the WAVE RT driver as well. The Windows rating on this system is 5.9 out of 7.9 which is pretty respectable.

I'm running Mixcraft Pro Studio 6.0, Superior Drummer 2.0 & Melodyne Editor 2 without any hiccups.

I'm extremely pleased with my decision to go with this laptop. Yes, it comes with the Windows 8 upgrade but I'm not touching it! Windows 7 Pro is very stable and what I'm sticking with in this particular instance.

I would recommend this laptop of you're on a budget and looking for performance without a bunch of frills. There's no office productivity software pre-installed so if you're buying this for business purposes make sure you have all of the software you want to run. I'm sure that's one of the reasons the price is so reasonable.

For the home audio enthusiast, this is a great entry point platform for your audio recording and editing needs.

I like the raised keys on the keyboard. I like how quiet this laptop is. The sound and video are very good. Compared to other laptops I've had it's amazingly quiet.. It's nice and light. My last laptop, an Acer, would get burning hot. Not this one. Thanks to some new technology developed by HP it stays cool, which is a very nice feature. It's fast enough. I tried a Toshiba laptop before I got this one but sent it back because the sound and picture were both terrible, and because I HATED the Windows 8 operating system. I feel very lucky to have found this excellent computer with Windows 7, which I much prefer. I would recommend this laptop.

Alright guys, let me see how precise I can be with this review. I bought this machine for a client of mines and they absolutely love it!

First of with the build quality. Its brushed aluminium with some plastic around so the build quality does feel pretty solid. It's a bit heavier than the equivalent lenovo with the same specs but it's not terrible and of the bat, of the better things about the build quality is that everything sits securely on the machine. The lenovo I bought a while aback had q/c issues with the dvd drive sticking out. But this machine was perfect. Oh the machine is a little wider than you think it is, but its not that big a deal. the black finish at the bottom hides how wide the machine actually is.

Now for what comes in the box. I TOTALLY LOVEEEEEEEEE the fact that it came with BOTH operating system DVD's. HP ... YOU GUYS ROCK FOR THAT! So this laptop came with both installation cd's, either windows 7 pro or windows 8 pro, which ever you choose to upgrade it to. And of course with all HP machines it comes with a tonne of bloatware that would take you at least an hour to get rid off (my only major gripe but I still give it 5 stars). But one you get rid of the HP bloatware it works brilliantly!

Now I did notice an earlier review where someone was complaining about it coming in french which I did think was a bit odd. But for those of you who are reading this rewview pay attention. When the laptop is booting for the FIRST time a screen will come up to select which language you want installed to use your machine. YOU MUST BE VERY CAREFUL AT THIS POINT. Because once you select the wrong language it cannot be undone unless you do a complete reinstall. So I figured either the gentleman or his mom was rushing the setup and didn't realise until it was too late. So ppl, please be careful when running the set up.

And I absolutely HAVE to mention the software update for this machine. Now when I was trying update the lenovo I kept getting a stupid error about the updates failing and had to go through the painstaking task of installing them one by one. Which I thought was a bit odd. And guess what, on the dare HP ... NO SUCH PROBLEMS !!! Clicked download, windows installed, even told me there were some unecessary updates and to date it's purring like a kitten !!!

And one final thing is that FN key was not working on my laptop. I was abit alarmed and concerned at first, but if its one thing, I can't fault HP online customer support, and sure enough there was a nice little file on HP's website which said HP FN driver update/fix .. and with that installed the machine didn't fail to impress me.

All in all I highly recommend this HP laptop, which is strange of me to say because I used to hate HP, but if I had to choose this and the lenovo(which was a fingerprint magnet btw), I DEFINITELY would go with this!

If any of you who are reading this and still have more questions. Feel free to contact me!

Honest reviews on HP ProBook 4540s 15.6" Business Notebook PC - C6Z37UT

It's a computer laptop. It works as expected. I got this one because I didn't want windows 8, but wanted a decent amount of memory. This gave me the option of sticking with 7 and also gave me a disk I could use to upgrade to windows 8 if I ever feel adventuresome. I like the key board. The keys are raised. There are some features I haven't tried yet. It is light weight. That is a plus. Much faster than my other laptops. The CD/DVD slot is not well designed, is flimsy and is hard to open. Update: It has a strange deal with the mouse. There is a small pin light (not a button) in the left portion of the mouse closest to the monitor. If you touch it by accident the light will come on and your mouse will freeze. The only thing that will make the mouse unfreeze is to tap that light several times. Apparently my other HP laptop is like this as well and I never have been unfortunate enough to accidently press it. Other than several hours of panic, it didn't harm anything. But scared me to have my computer essentially frozen and unable to access my documents.

The only complaint I have about this laptop is that it's a little big. But hey, I knew that going into it. I upgraded from a Toshiba 13.3" ultrabook that was very light-weight and compact but lacked a little on the power side. I found myself needing a little more power.

15.6" is a little larger than I am used to, but I can't blame HP for that -I knew what I was getting, and I'll get over it in time. And it's actually a lot lighter weight than other comparably sized laptops.

Beyond that, I have a lot of good things to say about this laptop. First off, it's one of the few laptops remaining on Amazon that comes with Windows 7 at all, much more Windows 7 Professional. That was a serious selling point for me. It's got some nice features like a fingerprint-reader that you can setup to process your Windows login rather than typing in a password, which is fun as well.

It also has an excellent keyboard that feels just right...raised keys that have just enough umphh to feel what you are typing, and a 10-key! (Okay, I'm an accountant, so 10-keys matter to me more than most.)

I am consistently getting about 6 hours of battery life doing light computing (word processing, internet surfing, but no video streaming or playing music.) That's exactly what I was looking for. And after coming from a 2nd generation i3 to this 3rd generation i5, the thing seems blazingly fast.

I've had this laptop for about 2 weeks and so far I am loving it. As long as you are okay with a 15.6" computer, I would highly recommend this. And it came with a free Windows 8 disk if you ever feel the desire to upgrade...thus far I do not.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I am no tecno geek and my needs are relatively simple when it comes to computing so this laptop fits my lifestyle perfectly. I had no problem setting the Envy 6 up to begin using it. It was ready to go in seconds with its built in wifi. I've used the same Dell XPS for about three years, so this laptop is a welcome addition. It's super lightweight and very thin, not bulky or uncomfortable at all. Compared to my other computer, the Envy 6 is super comfortable to use. I think it would be perfect for students and seniors due to the ease of transport, battery life, and ease of operation and because it is so lightweight. I have been using Windows Vista for several years now so using Windows 7 on this notebook is so much nicer, Vista could be a pain, but I've had no problems with the operating system on this notebook and it has a lot of helpful advice to make using it easier and functional. There is no CD option on this version of the Envy Sleekbook, but it hooks up easily to an external CD drive to install programs or watch movies. The resolution and picture on the Envy is wonderful, after looking at this screen and going back to my Dell was suprising to me. The graphics on the Envy are crisp and colorful. The Envy also has bluetooth/wireless so it can be used with other wireless items like printers and phones.

The Envy also has some great features for pictures. It uses Youcam webcam software and it has a lot of fun options for pictures. My kids have been having a lot of fun using it. There are enough fun things on Youcam to keep them amused for long periods of time, even in low light. When I downloaded pictures from my SD card, the computer separated the pictures by date so I could make different albums vs. lumping them altogether and the software also uses face recognition which is a really cool feature.

The Envy surfs the internet with good speed even while playing music and having multiple windows open. The Beats audio is a really nice feature and the sleekbook comes with the standard jack for headphones. Beats audio adds a little extra touch and makes this laptop a little more jazzy and appealing, especially to kids.

My Dell laptop, gets really hot after an half an hour or so of use so I have it on a cooling pad, but it still gets too hot to use after being on it for a while, especially in the heat of the summertime. The Envy stays nice and cool while in use. I've not experienced it getting hot or over heating even after hours of constant use in hot temperatures, it gets a little bit (ever so slightly) warm but doesn't ever feel really hot. The Envy has a nice black finish instead of just aluminum which I really like.

The keyboard is also great. This version doesn't have a backlight for night use, but the keyboard is easy to use with no major clicking noise. It's quiet and comfortable. The trackpad responds great and has a pretty wide pad for navigation, at times it does take more than one click to bring something up, but this is nothing major.

Many of the games on the Envy are linked to an external gaming company, Wild Tangent and they offer free playtime with options to buy the games. The graphics and speed of the games has been really good. I haven't loaded anything like the Sims on this sleekbook as I had trouble with The Sims on my Dell, so I don't know if I will ever do that, but for seek and find games, card games and the like, this works great. I am not sure I would load it up with a lot of high graphic games as it's not really a gaming laptop but a few games would probably work just fine, just not something huge, it would probably work, but slow the unit down.

The Envy also comes with a start up Office version with options to buy the full version. I find that I usually only use Word so this is just fine for me, but for those who rely on Power Point and other programs, an upgrade is easily available, there are also easy options to use to upgrade to any Windows program or add-on you'd like to have. Instant downloads make this super easy, and the computer offers different things to you as you work. The unit is quite intuitive without being annoying.

All in all, I really like this sleekbook laptop. It's been super reliable so far with no issues. It's basic which would make it wonderful for students to do homework and surf the internet as well as for seniors who don't need a lot of bells or whistles and hot graphics on their games. This is a nice basic notebook that is super easy to use with great sound and graphics as long as you don't over load it. It's stylish and is black with a red bottom. The Envy 6 is very thin and super lightweight for easy transport. Even business people should find that this is a great notebook for travel and home use. For a low cost laptop, it's great. I paid quite a bit for my Dell and this hp seems to do everything it did without the issues I've had with it and Windows Vista. For an inexpensive laptop, I would recommend this unit for students, seniors, travellers or people who don't need a ton of extra features. It's simple and works really well without over heating or feeling cumbersome. I've had no problems with it for what I use it for which is pictures, music, e mail, typing documents, playing games and accessing the internet. Norton is included free for one month for virus prevention. For a less expensive unit, it still feels like a quality laptop, it's not made cheaply, the Envy is actually very pretty and isn't thrown together where you feel like if the wind blew something will fall off or break. The 15 inch screen is large enough for a quality picture and the graphics are really good.

Netflix also works very well streaming movies on this notebook. The picture is great and Beats provides exceptional sound-no problems whatsoever.

This is a nice solid notebook that is easy to use and looks great. I am growing fonder by the day. If I run across any problems I will be sure to update, but so far, I am very happy with the overall performance of the Envy 6-1010.

UPDATE: 9/10/12-I've installed Sims 3 using a plug and play DVD/DVD rewritable drive and I am very happy to say that Sims 3 works great on this laptop! I was actually afraid to try it but thought what the heck? I can delete the game. But, to my amazement, Sims 3 with one expansion pack even, works great on this laptop. This is just a great machine!

*****Nine months later, this machine is still working well with no problems. I have had to replace the charging cord twice because the wiring inside shorted out by getting bent or by stepping on the cord and once it fell off the bed onto the side plug, so it's my fault about the cord. They've redesigned these cords to turn to the side now instead of sticking straight out where they had a tendancy to get hit or bent. Machine is still very good and I've never had any problem with it and it's almost been a year of ownership.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program To be able to fairly review the HP ENVY Sleekbook, I first had to stop and ask myself what exactly the Sleekbook is and isn't. Reviewing it for what it isn't wouldn't be fair, and too many people tend to do just that leading to unfairly poor reviews. So what is the Sleekbook exactly? It is a slightly more affordable AMD version of the Ultrabooks, but it can't be called an Ultrabook because Intel owns the rights to that moniker. What you get with the Sleekbook is a non-user upgradable slimmed down laptop (or large netbook) with no built-in optical drive; the battery and hard drive are not user-removable to be swapped for other drives or a spare battery. Once the battery runs down, you are left no choice but to recharge it via the power supply they send with it. This was kind of a let down that the batteries weren't swappable, but given the price and lightweight portability factor the Sleekbook was intended for, it really isn't a fault. Given that the battery life on it is exceptionally good, a spare battery isn't really needed. It's easy to get 6+ hours off a full charge.

The processor is an AMD APU, meaning it handles both processing and graphical duties. It is a dual-core design, and has plenty of power to do most any task anyone would reasonbly ask of a laptop type of computer. Heck, it even runs some games fairly well such as Star Trek Online and World of Warcraft. It has plenty of oomph to process audio and video files for those with a portable studio, and the screen is large enough and has enough resolution for minor photo-editing tasks.

The keyboard is the chicklet style, and it does take some getting used to, as does the touchpad. First thing I had to do was turn down the sensitivity on the touch-tap controls because they really pick up the slightest touch in default configuration. If you plan to use one of these much in poorly lit environments, do yourself a favor and get the next model up with the backlit keyboard. It's very hard to see the keyboard in the dark, and the chicklet keycaps combined with the compact laptop layout isn't very friendly for the touch-typist.

They quality of the built-in speakers is worse than bad, it delves into the realm of abysmal. Even my old laptop circa 2003 had far superior sound quality from the built-in speakers. However, once you plug in a set of quality headphones or IEM's, the Beats Audio sound processing really comes to life and gives everything a rich, full sound that is sure to impress.

The finish? I love the color scheme, the dark brushed metal with deep red bottom really looks great, though as can be expected the brushed metal finish is quite the fingerprint magnet. Keep a micro-fiber cloth nearby to keep those smudges under control and you'll have a really, ahem, SLEEK looking Sleekbook that is sure to turn a few heads.

Performance to cost ratio? For the money, you get a lot of performance, more processing power than most people need for average tasks. I really have to say that the price is excellent for the performance offered. Compared to comparable offerings, you really would be hard pressed to find anything better for the price, and spending a couple hundred more isn't really going to net the average user a meaningful performance increase outside of mostly useless benchmark numbers. Overall the HP ENVY Sleekbook is a no-brainer for someone looking for a budget-friendly go anywhere lightweight/thin notebook computer.

PROS: this laptop looks great, feels great, and at the beginning...worked great. It is very light and sleek, which I loved!

CONS: I made the mistake of not reading all of the reviews before buying this laptop and now I GREATLY REGRET that!!!! So first the shift key became harder to press, then before long it would randomly freeze and there was nothing to do to fix it, then left hinge on the laptop broke so the only thing on that was connecting the left side together was a FEW WIRES!!! Now you couldn't really shut the laptop and the laptop was crooked!!! Also, I thought I should state for the record that I take VERY good care of my things and the reason my laptop was falling apart WASN'T my doing!!! So because it was broken I sent it back and HP said it would take a WHILE before they could fix my laptop so they said I could pick out a new laptop....so after days and days of talking to HP I found one I liked and they said they had in stock....however they just informed me that it is no longer in stock (even though I supposedly ordered it through one of their managers a few days ago!!!!!!). I am so incredibly disappointed with the HP envy laptop and the company HP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Honest reviews on HP ENVY 6-1010us Sleekbook 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program The HP Envy 6 arrived in a slender box, with power cord and easy set up instructions. There was no start up disc included and none was needed. I plugged it in and it started up with basic instructions for personal account information and set up.

This laptop is slim and lightweight. It has no additional number keypad, and there is no backlight on the keys. The mouse touchpad is easy to use once you get the hang of scrolling up and down pages.

Wi-FI was set up in seconds. I was able to connect to the internet with no issues.

It includes anit-virus protection trial for 60 days. Which is a good start.

The laptop was warm, not hot, after using it for a few hours. I use it everyday for internet use, games, shopping and accounts etc., so I do charge it everyday to keep a full charge.

At 15.6, the screen is a nice size and the picture is crisp. The sound is clear with the Beats Audio, my Itunes music sounded great.

I only need a computer for recreational use and school work. This fits all my needs. No complaints at all so far. I love it!

Recieved this laptop for my wife this morning. Ran some preliminary tests to determine if it needed to be returned or if it was running at advertised speeds. Performed very well. I would emphasise that my five star rating is specific to the price point this laptop is in. Clearly this computer cannot compete with a $1000 laptop, however for its price I am having a hard time finding anything comparable.

Runs smoothly, starts up quickly and performed very well when clocking the CPU and data transfer rates.

If you want a great computer for under $600 don't hesitate, this is your laptop.

I bought this computer because I couldn't find another laptop this size (14in screen) which could match its specs and price. Specifically I liked its large hard drive (1 tb), high resolution (1600x900), matte screen with very good battery life (>6 hrs). I also really like its looks, very thin and relatively light with brushed metal top and palm rest, and large track pad. The reason for the less than perfect score is the plastic bottom and inability to remove the bottom or even the access panel for the memory. I like to be able to replace the hard drive, memory and wireless card as better/upgrade components become available. Because the bottom is plastic when I removed the screws and tried to take both the memory access cover and/or the bottom off, neither would budge and I was afraid if I kept prying I would break the plastic. Anyway if you're not interested in replacing components than this is a great laptop, looks nice and performs well. I'd would definitely recommend it.

I was able to snap this up for $800 at the Microsoft store though they no longer have it in stock. This Amazon version looks to be the same and I think even for $1100 is a pretty competitive laptop. On pros and cons I won't repeat the specs much since you can read those elsewhere...I'll just note my experiences in the first 2 weeks of ownership.

Pros:

Relatively thin and light considering it packs a DVD drive and discrete graphics card

14 inch screen in a 13 inch laptop form factor

Nice screen, though viewing angles could be a bit better but are definitely acceptable unless you are super nitpicky on this.

Keyboard is nice and backlighting works well

Matte screen and brushed aluminum minimizes fingerprints

Seems pretty fast though I haven't run any benchmarks. Most programs launch fairly quickly though surprisingly Samsung's EasySettings program takes a good 10-15 seconds to launch.

Battery life is reasonable, though not exceptional (probably averaging around 4 hours, using Samsung's recommended battery lifetime extending 80% charge setting.

Fast boot time....about 25-30 seconds and about 2 seconds resume from sleep. Ironically, resume from hibernate seems to take as long...maybe longer than a complete boot.

WiFi seems good. Have read other complaints of this but have no issues.

Cons:

Most annoying is the Samsung software suite that launches at startup...this is fine if you're using an admin account but if you run as a standard user it gives you 3 or 4 Windows UAC prompts at startup so these programs will run. I finally had to remove these from startup using Task Scheduler to avoid this annoyance.

Volume, keyboard brightness and screen brightness are controlled via function keys but require toggling them on using the Fn button. There is a Fn Lock button but this must be reset at every restart. Also when function keys are locked, the delete key becomes the DVD eject key. Fine until you happen to be text editing...then it is annoying to have to toggle this back off.

Some have complained about the Elan touchpad. I find it to be acceptable, though I wouldn't call it stellar. For me the only real issue is that without the physical click buttons it is easy to sometimes right click when wanting to left click.

Bottom plastic seems a little flimsy. Not really problematic but a bit out of step with the notebook's overall quality.

Too many stupid stickers to peel off including some that are paper based and have to betaken off with alcohol.

Mine was a "Microsoft Signature PC" since it was bought from Microsoft, so essentially this means it was pretty much bloat ware free. I can't speak to the Amazon version.

Also one final note on the fan. Typically it is very unobtrusive but tonight I watched a few hours of video and it did cycle on fairly loudly for a few minutes every 10 minutes or so.

Conclusion: a nicely designed, good looking, relatively thin and lit feature packed PC. I don't think you will go wrong with this if you bear in mind the few "cons" above.

This laptop is "almost there" is so many ways. The resolution of the screen is truly high definition, but the viewing angle is very limited before detail and color becomes distorted.

The "easy settings" have many features and presets, but it seems to be a common problem that the user defined settings are not initially kept after shutdown.

There is no number pad! There is not even an option to use the common "Fn+alt" to modify alphabet keys to function as a keypad. You must use an external keypad for alt codes /ascii characters, and there are only two usb ports on this laptop, on the left side. and one of those is constantly occupied by my usb wifi adapter that replaces the inferior internal broadcom adapter.

At the time of this writing, this laptop still does not have a support page on Samsung's website. The laptop has been available for purchase for over 6 months.

The solid pros about this laptop are the battery life and the speed. The claim of 9 hours of battery time under in conservative use settings is genuine, and it really does take less than 2 seconds to wake up from sleep mode. The only time this computer started to slow down was when I gave the norton software that was bundled with it a chance. Uninstall that immediately.

This laptop is almost perfect except for two things. The speakers are weak, but if you do a couple tweaks then it isn't all that bad. Also, the battery life is really low. I would say about 3 hours on full blast. Hopefully they come out with a better battery, or mine could just be defective. I might send it back, but I'm in no rush since I carry my charger around with me anyway.

So, this laptop is low priced, but high powered, at least for what I need it to do. I am pretty much like everyone else and just browse the web and check email on this thing and it does the job just fine for that. It is quick and clippy and I absolutely love having a number key pad. My only complaint about this is that it does not have a USB port on the right hand side of the laptop. Why is this important you ask? Mouse. I have a small travel mouse that I usually use with my laptops and with this one, it has to be plugged all the way on the other side of the laptop. It's kind of inconvenient, but not a deal breaker with me.

This would be a great laptop for a kid going off to college or any casual user to just have around the house.

BE WARNED: as with most new laptops these days, this one does not come with installation DVD's. That means that if you get a virus or something, you will not have a way to reinstall Windows. It does however have a method for MAKING a backup. I highly recommend that you do this IMMEDIATELY before using the laptop. When I did it, it required 5 (yes five) blank DVD's, so make sure that you have some on hand. If you skip this step, you will rue the day down the road. The fun part is that the printed instructions are pretty stupid and look to be generic for all Toshiba laptops. To make the backup do the following:

Click Start -> All Programs -> TOSHIBA -> Support & Recovery -> Recovery Media Creator

and follow the instructions from there. The printed instructions tell you to check the help guide on the laptop, does not give directions for finding the help guide, but when you do it does not give the correct location for the program that makes the recovery DVD's

I have had this laptop for 8 months now I use it every day for work. MS Office 2003 working fine on it. I can even use Adobe Photoshop reasonably well.

Key points:

*Extremely low temperature at about 75-80 degrees this is truly a "lap top"!

*A little slow for heavy internet graphics

*Sound card is not great, but I play all my music through airtunes to my stereo so I don't care so much

*If you want to record internet audio, you will have problems this is not the laptop for that use

*Lightweight

If you want a non-nonsense, no-frills laptop for low cost that runs MS Office and can use the internet, I don't know how you can beat this laptop.

I have had mine for a 1 1/2 years and it has been great! No complaints at all. Still holds a good charge on the battery, plenty of memory and I felt like a great system for the price.

Honest reviews on Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5540 15.6 -Inch Laptop (Black)

This review is meant to help classify the type of person that would enjoy this laptop. If you are a big gamer stop here because this is not a laptop that you would enjoy. If not, please keep reading.

This is what I would call a 'Black Friday Laptop'. Why? The computer is built cheap and the parts are years old. This is the laptop you would give to a kid or better yet a grandma or grandpa who is learning the computer. Still interested? Keep reading.

This is a beginners laptop, here is why.

Product Features

AMD E Series Processor 1.65GHz (1MB Cache)

3GB SO-DIMM RAM

Note: 1.65 GHz and an AMD processor. This is the same type of processor you may find in a Netbook. Low quality. Do not expect to multitask to much. Some light browsing and email checking would be ok. 3GB of ram is low. 4 gb is what the average user even newbies use.

320GB 5400RPM Hard Drive

Note: 320gb? This is very low storage, I would not classify this as a entertainment laptop. 5400rpm also does not help, but for the price is makes sense.

15.6-Inch Screen, AMD Radeon HD 6320

Note: Nice size screen, but do not be fooled by the 'HD' the resolution would not be what you would see on a standard HDTV.

Windows Home Premium, 5.56 hours Battery Life

Note: OS is standard. 5.56 battery life? More like 2.5 to 3.5 hours unless you are just letting it sit there.

Ports and Connectivity

USB Ports: 2

USB 2.0 Ports: 2

Note: this is standard on most laptops, missing new technology of USB 3.0.

Cases and Expandability

Size (LWH): 9.84 inches, 15 inches, 1.5 inches

Weight: 5.5 pounds

Note: This is normal for a 15.6in laptop.

Wireless Type: 802.11bgn

Note: This is standard.

Other:

The plastic frame could make a normal laptop user think this may have been cheaply made.

The buttons on these type of laptops tend to break fairly easy with use. Be ready to have a backup.

Conclusion:

If you are looking for a beginners laptop I will say look no further, but you might as well wait for a 'Black Friday' sale which would make this laptop about 50.00 cheaper. If this is the max you are willing to spend then save the money for a higher end laptop when models like this are on sale. If you need one now for school, work, etc. Go for it.

I have 2 hp computers, one that is 2 years old. They are faster than this one. I wasn't expecting a super computer for the price. But as it is right now it doesn't really even play a simple app on facebook without slowing up. I hope its just a simple adjustment but I guess I should have researched before purchasing this. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006TI42J2/ref=cm_cr_rev_prod_title
