My experience with Gateway has been terrible. Here is my story. I decided to purchase a new laptop computer last month and with Lenovo buying IBM Thinkpads, I decided to try a new brand (I have owned IBM Thinkpads in the past). I ordered the $3,000 Gateway NX 860 XL before leaving for vacation in March and received it while on vacation. Upon returning home, I had a business trip scheduled and decided to open and use my new computer. Within 3 days of using the computer, my power supply failed and I was without my laptop the last 2 days out-of-town. At the same time, Gateway was proactively trying to schedule a technician visit to fix a faulty video card within this computer. At this time, I decided to return the machine because of its lack of dependability. Now it came time to deal with the customer service department. When buying the machine I was assigned a sales rep who promised to be available with any questions I might have in the future. Therefore, this was the first person I tried to contact with the problems on my new machine. Needless to say, I NEVER received an answer from him after numerous voice/emails. Next, I wrote a letter to the CEO and finally received a call back from Gateway executive offices. A gentleman in that department informed me that I was outside the 15 days return policy (by 2 days) and that instead of getting a refund, I would have to return the machine for service. The next day my machine incurred another defect the screen failed. I can hear the machine start but I get no response from the screen (I even attempted to externally connect the laptop to another video screen with no luck). This was the final straw. I called both my sales representative (no response) and my new contact (from Gateway executive offices) leaving 4 messages in 2 days with no return call. It was not until I searched through the Gateway voicemail system that I got a real person who physically delivered the message to my contact for me.

After speaking again with Gateway executive offices, I received the same conclusion no return and I would need to send it back to the company. He informed me that it would take 1-5 days to receive a box from Gateway to pack up and ship out my product. Then, it would take 2 weeks to service and if I'm lucky to have my machine back in a month. Are you kidding? I have already ordered a new machine (Lenovo). Right now, it is as good as a $3000 doorstop.

All I wanted to do was return a product that did not work. In my business, reliability is extremely important and this machine is not reliable. Also, Gateway does not show respect for their customer. They hide behind policies instead of standing behind their product and realizing a product defect on their side.

Don't buy Gateway. The computer is lousy and the customer service stinks.

I am an IT Professional with 7 Degrees and Certifications. In fact I am working on 3 more now. I have had the M675 since 2004. It is still going strong. I also have a Gateway M685 (2007) that has bit the dust hard. It needs a new laptop screen. And I have a Gateway NW78 (2010). Obviously I like Gateway and their full size keyboards. The M675 is as solid as can be. It has had some work done on it but it still works. I am going to upgrade it to Windows 7 in the next two weeks. It does get hot but I am sure it will be around for years. It just works. It has 4 TB of external drives attached and just has no issues at all. Wireless works great.

I've owned the Gateway M675 notebook since February of 2003. The only problem that I've had with the system was a motherboard problem, which Gateway fixed without issue. Aside from that, I've used this computer for all of eight years and while heavy, it's extremely reliable.

The wireless, Gigabit Ethernet, CD-RW/DVD-RW drive works great, keyboard, LCD panel, front audio controls and everything else.

The only thing that I've had to buy for the system for replacement was a new battery (about $35) and a new power supply (about $45) a couple years ago. I also upgraded the RAM to the max capacity of 2GB and the hard drive to a 160GB drive.

Overall, I'd place the downfalls on this unit with the fact that it doesn't boot from USB devices, but then again, this laptop was made in 2003 and was no longer manufactured after 2005. The boot from USB requirement in the hardware simply did not exist in 2003. Why they haven't since added it, I don't know (the existing hardware technology would certainly support it).

Also, other downfalls are weight and heat. It's 8.7 lbs on my bathroom scale and the heat it generates is quite a bit...don't actually use this system on your lap, your thighs will be burning in no time. My boss felt the heat coming from the system while sitting on my desk and he actually said "Man...you can pop popcorn with that kind of heat!"

Other than those, I would place this system as a very, rock solid system. I've had more parts fail in my desktop computers than I have with this laptop (which is actually a desktop replacement system given it's got a 2.4Ghz Pentium 4 processor, 2GB of RAM, 160GB HDD, 802.11g/b wireless, CD/DVD burner, four USB 2.0 ports and a FireWire (1394) micro port, and an ATI Raideon Mobility 9600 with 64MB Video RAM). Oh...it's got a floppy drive as well, but you can obtain accessories to go into the left bay (where the floppy drive is) that will enable other functions and features.

I have had this computer for about a month now.And it is great.At first I said I would not buy a gateway when they first came out because I owned one a long time ago and it was not nice.Thats when windows 98SE was out and that was the worse operating system I have ever noticed. Ever! But now you have vista to take it's place.So I decided to go ahead after years of thinking and I bought this gateway and it is by far the best looking and the best working one I have seen today.I work on computers and I would normally by a dell are a IBM around 5 years of age because they last forever.They new model computers I don't care what model they are will last you for a year tops if you use them enough.As you can see this laptop is still around and still working! Get it ! How many can say that when they go to besy buy and buy a laptop new! How many times did you go back and if your warranty was up you were screwed! Its a great laptop with a full keyboard I mean a full keyboard like you have on a desktop.Not squeezed together like the newer model laptops! All kind of buttons for your every need.I give this laptop rave reviews and its still going and count the years when it first came out and then count the years of the newer model laptop you have and does it still work.For this laptop to still work after 8 years I am please with no problems so how about that! Cant say that for many laptops now a days.You get 1 year with all that junk in it and it will last 1 year.Now I ask you whats better a laptop working for a long time are a suped up one that last a year.I got my money worth plus and this laptop still works without a hitch.Upgraded to 2gb of memory and 100gb hardrive.And now I can add up to 500 gigs with the new IDE PATA DRIVES.Man I have no complaints take it from me it will last you for ever! I purchased my new Gateway laptop and since I had not heard anything bad about the company, expected to have a satisfactory product. My main complaint is the exceptionally slow time it takes to install a program. The install goes along at a reasonable time frame copying the program to my hard drive from CD. But at the final install step which it states will take two minutes, instead goes on and on for hours. That was my spyware program. A few days later, I tried to install programs which came with the computer and again, two hours later when I tried to stop the install, a message came up that 'program xxx is still installing, do you want to quit?' I responded 'no' and the install contined for another two hours. I finally stopped it and have not bothered to install any other programs. My advice? Do not buy a Gateway.

I actually purchased the Yoga 11" directly from Lenovo's site. I do want to point out that my entire experience was really positive working with their sales and customer service staff. The item shipped quickly and without hassle they required signature but since they ship via UPS, they allowed my neighbor to sign. Ultimately I did return this item which I'll explain more on, but that process too was outstanding. They immediately (like while on the phone with them) emailed me pre-paid UPS shipping labels and provided all the instruction I needed to get it sent back.

Pros:

Versatility and form factor: The 11" size is plenty portable, and it's relatively light for a laptop. The available touch-screen with it's various "modes" makes it nice to use while standing itself up in a wide range of positions across it's 360 degree rotation.

Build quality: It feels solid, the lines fit together well, it doesn't creak or flex when you hold it from outer edges. The palm rest is textured and it seemed more durable than others I've used that discolored over time. That said it's casing is made of plastic and I hoped for higher grade materials. i.e. the aluminum found in Apple's products.

Cons:

Internal hardware: It uses the same Tegra 3 processor that comes available in $200 Android tablets, and as a result you're stuck with a diluted version of Window's 8, and it occasionally has a hard time keeping up with the performance demands.

Windows RT: This isn't a review for Windows RT so I'll keep this brief. It's too limited, the Windows Store comes up short on apps I find essential, and being an ARM chip means you're stuck with RT indefinitely with no declared upgrade path to RT Pro.

Tablet Mode: I thought I wanted the Yoga because it was the ideal compromise between laptop and tablet. Unfortunately, it isn't. It's just a bit to long (or tall) when holding it in portrait style. It weighs 3.8lbs which is definitely too heavy for practical tablet use, and the keyboard remains exposed when in this mode, which for me felt very awkward.

Price: Considering the sacrifices with the weak-ish CPU, being stuck with Windows RT, and that it doesn't quite deliver on the tablet concept it's overpriced at $799.

In summary: I returned the Yoga because I found it to be fundamentally the same offering as the Microsoft Surface, but you're charged $300 more for the attached keyboard and it's various "modes". The stand mode is super convenient, but it's not worth the difference in price.

It needs a capable, lap-top grade processor that can run full Windows 8, and it needs to get closer in width/height ratio to true tablets while still offering lap-top productivity for it to be worth $799.

When the app store is ready, I will want a Windows 8 device. And a convertible of some kind would make a lot of sense for me if someone can produce one that delivers beyond concept and pays attention to the details that reveal themselves in daily use.

Lenovo's Yoga 11 is pretty great. I had some trepidation about Windows RT until a friend of mine let me use his Surface. After using it, I knew I had to have an RT device, but I wanted something that felt more like a laptop than a tablet. Lenovo makes incredibly good hardware right now and this device is no exception.

The keyboard, typing surface, palm rests, and track pad are the absolute best I've use in an 11" form factor. It's even better than my MacBook Air for purposes of generating text and casual computing. Some of that credit is due to Windows RT and the Windows 8 gestures one can employ using both the screen and the track pad.

The screen is extremely good for a device this size and very easy on the eyes for extended typing sessions. Text and pictures are crisp and the range of colors and trueness of their hue is very good. I particularly like watching streaming media and reviewing photographs with the device. The touch screen is responsive and as accurate as my iPad or Nokia Windows Phone.

Windows RT does a really good job managing system resources. I thought I would have to exert a greater degree of workspace management to keep it running smoothly, but it handles multiple tasks rather well. The WiFi is a little slow being single channel I think, so pages don't load instantly like you think they would. However, this is all in the name of battery life I think, and a worthwhile endeavor it was.

The battery lasts for 11.5 hours or thereabouts from what I can discern. This was with WiFi on, and 3-5 applications running with the screen at 50% brightness. Unless you're working outside, 50% is still plenty bright to do whatever and nice enough for streaming video.

For most of what I do, the device has the functionality and the included Office Programs are preferred to 2010 Professional loaded on my other machines. While you can't side load applications other than what it comes with or what you can find in the Windows Store, I haven't found myself missing much except a decent PDF viewer. I've had to make due with Adobe's touch version and the one Microsoft included to get my by most of the time, but I rarely need more than two open at once.

The machine came with very little bloatware. Three applications in the Start menu that took as many seconds to uninstall and the machine was free and clear. The fact that Windows RT doesn't have too many applications out for it yet isn't all bad I suppose.

Summary great at $500 (or below), if you want a laptop-focused convertible/hybrid and can work within RT's limits. Great design and build quality. Epic battery life. Surprising performance.

First, a kind-of "caveat emptor" many reviews of Windows 8 and RT devices have negative feedback that's really about the OS. So, I'll leave most of those aside and suggest people search for general reviews of W8 and RT prior to purchase. But first, some specific heads-up regarding RT:

Yes, it's essentially a "locked down" version of Windows 8 and you can't install any "traditional" Windows programs. Check the websites of your key programs or substitutes to see if they're available via the Windows Store. Note to MS: It's maddening that you can only browse the Store on a W8 or RT device; let people do this BEFORE buying. And because you're stuck with IE 10, you're also stuck if you need a specific browser extensions/add-on that isn't available for it. For me, in Chrome, they are the bit.ly, Pocket, Springpad, and a user agent string changer (to deal with temperamental hotspots). Given the slow growth of Windows Apps, IE 10 needs to step up and fill in the gaps, but it feels only partially done. RT has Office, but without Outlook and some power-user features. If you need those, you likely need a full W8 laptop anyway. I'm also concerned that MS doesn't have 2-step authentication for its services, especially since many W8 "social integration" features give it access to your Gmail, FB, etc. There are many more personal issues I have with RT's execution, which were deal breakers at the original $799, but are tolerable at $500.

Positives there are many.

Build quality: excellent and the materials are well-chosen: the rubberized texture on the palm rest also keep it secure when it's face down, flipped over in "stand mode". The black, soft-touch, chiseled look is sharp, and I prefer its feel, durability and scratch-resistance to aluminum or worse, the faux silver plastic. The hinges, case edging, and various details are top-notch.

Screen/keyboard/mouse: resolution is okay, but works well for W8/RT's "Metro" interface. On an 11.6" screen, the resolution limit is most noticeable in something like Next Issue, when magazines are zoomed to fill the screen in landscape-mode. The keyboard is great; FAR better than on comparable RT and Atom-based W8 convertibles, and any portable bluetooth one. The trackpad is mostly good. Sometimes, it doesn't easily register physical clicks, and there's weak (or non-existent) palm rejection. But as you get more comfortable with touch in W8, it becomes a smaller issue.

"Modes": as a laptop, it feels just as good as an 11" Macbook Air, and has very similar dimensions and weight. Many 10"-or-larger tablet owners will love "stand mode" on their laps. It's an easy, very natural setup for reading, watching movies, Skype'ing, etc. It's a bigger difference than you think from just having a laptop on your lap. Tablet mode is less appealing, given its dimensions and weight, but I find that the case with anything bigger than a 7"+ tablet. And I haven't found reason to use tent mode yet.

Battery life and performance: battery life is truly great. On a full charge, the day I set it up (with screen brightness at 70% and all the downloading/installing, background music streaming), it lasted nearly 12 hrs. It re-charged in about 1hr. RT and apps run well on this Tegra 3. The "user experience" feels far more like a 1st-generation Ultrabook on W7 than not. My Nexus 7, which has a slightly slower Tegra 3, tends to choke and feels slower. So while there are legitimate issues with RT, it is definitely well-optimized for ARM chips.

Other pluses: Navigating many everyday "computer-y" things in Android and iOS is tougher than in RT. Adding printers? USB ports with storage? Traditional, drop-and-drag files and folders? In Desktop mode, RT is mostly as good and easy to navigate as W7.

In June, there will be an Intel i5-powered, "full" W8 version. Much faster, and install mostly whatever you want. It'll be $799, almost ½ lb heavier, slightly bigger, and probably realistically squeak out only 5 hrs of battery life. But for many people, it might be worth it.

Think of it this way... what would you think of an 11" MacBook Air that had the same 360 degree "flip", touch screen, and 10+ hr battery life? But running only iOS, but only some of the apps. No? How about at $500?

The Yoga 11 is an incredible product for those who can work in the Windows RT operating system (research Windows 8 vs Windows 8 RT if you do not know the difference). After doing my research, I knew my computing needs could be met with Windows RT. I chose the Yoga 11 over the Microsoft Surface RT after much debate.

I am attending graduate school online and needed a comfortable typing device for the long hours of school work I do. I liked the Yoga 11's attached keyboard much better than the touch and type keyboards that are attachable to the Surface RT that I tested out in the store. The two devices have the same internals so the choice really came down to form factor. The Yoga 11's keyboard is one of the best laptop keyboards I've ever typed on.

For schoolwork I have no difficulties accessing my class blackboard website and doing my required work or watching lectures. Microsoft Office 2013 is included with Windows RT devices and is perfect for all the Word, PowerPoint, and Excel work I do. This was a huge benefit because I would have had to still purchase Microsoft Office separately if I had decided to get a standard Windows 8 device. The only thing I wish RT had was a desktop PDF viewer as I read many research articles in this format. The included PDF viewer does get the job done, it just requires you to leave the desktop. I got over it quickly.

For personal use I love the ability to convert quickly between a tablet and laptop. This eliminates the need to have a device for each purpose. Some say this is too heavy to use as a tablet. If the weight of the device bothers you as you are using it as a tablet, you can put it into "stand" or "tent" mode and set it on your lap or a table. Feeling the keys on the back when using it as a tablet is a little weird at first, but I got used to it very quickly and never think twice about it. Also, the keys are disabled once you take the Yoga out of laptop mode so don't worry about accidental key presses in the other 3 modes.

Every once in a while there are some stutters or lag. This happens rarely and is no different than any regular laptop or desktop I've seen stutter from time to time. Some programs load a little slower than they do with the more powerful x86 processors, but we're only talking a few seconds.

As other reviewers have stated, Windows RT cannot run certain "traditional" windows programs like Photoshop or play traditional CD-ROM games. If you need to run specific programs that are not supported, then clearly this device is not for you. DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE BUYING. Windows 8 and Windows 8 RT (or just Windows RT) are two different, but very similar operating systems. It's sad how many people bought this device without researching the limitations and then frustratingly gave it a low rating because it didn't meet their needs. *Keep in mind you can remote desktop into other computers and access all their programs. I've done this to test it out and it works great for programs, though I have not tried playing a game through remote desktop.

I chose an RT device for a few reasons.

--10+ hours of battery life on a single charge while most laptops last only about 4 or 5 with real use

--the ability to leave the device on for days without turning off

--there are no fans, this does not get noisy after hours of use the way standard laptops do

--Microsoft office is included at no extra cost. This is only on Windows RT devices. Buying a standard Windows 8 device will require you to purchase Microsoft office separately.

--I do not need to run any x86 programs that would require me to get standard Windows 8

--This has the ability to use Remote Desktop to get into my Windows 8 Pro desktop to run any x86 programs as if they were on this device as long as I am on the same network. That means I can use Google Chrome, Photoshop, or whatever else can only be installed on standard Windows 8.

The one thing that annoys me with Windows RT is the speed at which it loads some websites. Most websites pop up instantly while a few seem to load and reload for 10-15 seconds before I can view them. It seems like it's mostly the ones with a lot of ads. Hopefully this will be fixed in a software update. Speaking of software updates, there have been a ton of them out for Windows RT devices. Before you do anything else on your Yoga, update it. Many of the bugs and quirks have been worked out through these updates.

The Yoga 11 is incredible in looks and performance. Do your research. If a Windows 8 RT device meets all of your computing needs software-wise, then I would definitely recommend the Lenovo Yoga 11.

Great laptop....fast start up and shut down. Slim, lightweight, and the touchscreen works great, but the biggest disappointment is the Windows RT operating system. I can't install my printer or other previously used devices and drivers defeating the entire purpose of the laptop capabilities for my business needs. Great for tablet use, but not for Laptop use.

Quick summary First PC I got had problems. Did get another one and it seems to be fine so far. I have left the review below since it is an honest account of what I went through with the first one.

I have been buying PCs since the early 1980s and this is BY FAR the WORST out of box experience I have had. The PC had 5 hours of critical updates from HP and Microsoft that did not go through correctly. 18 hours later still getting errors on the PC, from HP and Windows. I have called HP customer support three times so far, have reformatted PC with customer support on the line and still am having problems.

The HP support has been horrific. The HP support is from India and once you get to a live person the support is subpar. My main HP tech support person was down right rude and HE TOLD ME THE FOLLOWING THINGS which were horrific to hear from an IT guy (and totally false by the way):

(1) do not to make Windows critical updates since they cause problems on the HP PCs

(2) HP simple pass which is an advertised security feature did not work well

(3) I should ignore all the red ! and yellow warning triangles on my pc

He basically just wanted me off the line and to live with a problem PC! The support person also had me install some software from him that hijacked internet explore and had my computer go nuts with virus warnings and I got several viruses too!..this is when I agreed to reformat my PC...the India HP tech had limited knowledge of the PC itself and refused to answer any questions on Windows 8 even when we were sitting on the phone waiting for the computer to reboot or do updates.

After reformatting the hard drive and another 5 hours of doing HP and windows updates I am still getting errors. I had already installed my last copy of MS office on this pc and am very upset at the prospect of having to buy another copy of Office out of my pocket. Ship this PC back and go out and purchase another PC. So far I have been on the phone with HP for 14 hours. HP support is the worse... My HP support person also made me deactivate a lot of the Windows 8 features on the second installation and when I protested he told me he would not support any Windows issues and I could turn them on later. When the updates were done I asked how to turn on those Windows 8 features and he told me he didn't know and that wasn't his job.

UPDATE...escalating with HP support...now they are telling me that since this 8AM Saturday they cannot do anything till Monday and they will have someone call me back then to help me return my PC and get a new one then. This is unacceptable to me because this means 2 more days without a PC than if I was helped now.

UPDATE (2 hours later) still escalating.... Now HP is telling me to pack the PC up, drive to fed ex and once they have the PC back (I purchased this from HP directly) they will ship another one to me AND then I need to either call Microsoft and ask them if they can transfer my license to a new PC OR I need to buy another copy of Microsoft office. This means I won't have a new PC for 5 + days and then I need to start the installation procedure all over again.

UPDATE (3 hours later) packing up my PC. Fedex will pick up package Monday and I will get new PC Wed. Hope this one works!

Seriously???? That much escalation to get OK service???? Looks like it will take a week to resolve the issue and get a new PC. That is a lot of down time and a lot of non productive time for me to fix their problem.

From what I saw of the PC when it was working..

1) the sound system is nice...clear and loud enough to play music on without external speakers. I played some support videos online and had the sound on one of the lowest settings and it was plenty loud. Played a few songs and the sound quality is better than any other PC I have had.

2) The webcam was also HD and the quality was nice.

3) I think I will like Windows 8 once I get used to it. There is a learning curve on this but it has some nice features.

4) Have talked to several friends who have HP and they told me their HP assist never worked well and constantly has problems with updates.

5) This is my first HP...may be my last...their PCs may be OK but their customer support is HORRIBLE!

Update:

Got the new replacement PC Wed (yesterday). Software updates process of HP and MS software took 4+ hours but went smoothly. The installation of my other programs was pain free. Still installing my files but all seems well. Still very impressed with the sound system on the PC and know I will be enjoying that once my mp3s are installed.

HP support group called me and sent me an email Monday AM and gave me a case # and a direct number to contact them if I have any more troubles. They were very nice and made me feel that my problem was a fluke and I now had good support if it wasn't. Right now it looks like their was a glitch in the software update of my first PC which threw off everything. The second issue was that I got a bad tech from their Indian support group he needs some more training on both customer service and the PC. The final issue for me is that by the time I started escalating it was Saturday morning and the US support was closed at that time.

What I should have done was to send back my first PC the second the issues started and got a new PC and escalated with HP about the fact that I had already installed MS office on the bad PC.

Update one month later:

HP contacted me several times to make sure I was happy which I thought was very nice. These calls came from someone in the US and not India. Thank goodness... I may get another HP after all. The PC is working fine. Am enjoying the sound system (which is very good for a laptop sound system) and windows 8. No other issues.

I can't resist writing a very pre-emptive review because I have great feeling about this PC. First of all, I had a Lenovo core i7 ideapad crap out after just 18 months since manufacture. The 2630QM processor was a bit consumptive and I am absolutely paranoid the chipset may have had a bit of a ticking timebomb in its workings. While I respect Lenovo's ThinkPad brand, clearly there are some to be avoided or scrutinized in the lower tiers.

So in the market was I, and after researching my target price range I had decided on the AMD A8 or AMD A-10 line, if I was lucky. After all, I have some esteem for the AMD products as I find them to function better than the sum of their parts. Plus, I could also blame Intel in large part for my prior PC woes in the chipset vicinity. The HP Envy Dv6 with AMD A8-4500M was quite compelling in my search for products, but I had my reservations not finding the A-10 version. I shopped a lot online but didn't buy.. still waiting for the right deal.

So off I went for some family time, but on my way I happened to pass a Staples and couldn't resist stopping in to see if anything called me. Well, in fact, they have some phenomenal deals and no-nonsense powerful PCs. Indeed they had the dv6 Envy A8-4500M model which I tried extensively. However their best deal was a $500 core i5 Envy at $150 cheaper.

Needless to say I was forced to buy Intel again, but I can't regret it much. The computer is blazing fast. However what I really want to emphasize in this review is the excellent build quality. The mostly aluminum case is rigid and the chicklet keys have a fantastic feel. The cooling fan pushes out nothing but cold air and the Beats Speakers are definitely a bump up in laptop speaker output. Trackpad seems like great quality also.

There is one MAJOR drawback ... the screen viewing angles are weak with dark tones, and the resolution is .. by todays standards.. quite BLAH or even BLEH. However with brighter tones (like this web page) the angles are quite good. And it is blindingly bright. Connectivity excellent w Bluetooth and USB 3,0.

Overall, the intel internals are nothing to scoff at. However, there is NO reason not to strongly consider the dv6-7210us which is quite a competent overall system which is capable of a higher windows experience index number with a few small modifications (this PC will be GPU restricted for a lower overall score). So this review is mainly to APPLAUD hp for doing what other PC manufactures haven't done basically ever: make a computer with a good CPU near the top of the line (AMD A8 also) in an excellent form factor with no major bottlenecks in quality anywhere. Ok, the screen isn't amazing, but everything has it's price and as the one factor I can see separating this from a $2200 mac pro, I could care less. I can still give a 5*.

Also, Bravo! to Staples for carrying far better PC's than any other big box retailer I've come across (best buy, walmart and friends, Costco). Almost all of their PCs were desirable and they even had the blazing fast Core i7 Toshiba for $630 all holiday season!

It took a brutal bludgeoning of market share by Mac and tablets, and a massive blow to share price, but on a price to performance AND build quality ratio this machine is something you've been waiting for.

I had an awful experience when I first purchased the computer. It came with corrupted files. There was an icon on it to fix the problem. I made the mistake of following the instructions and wound up buying a service contract to repair the computer. I know Amazon will take back the computer with no questions but by the time I realized that it was too late. I wasted over $250 because of my own stupidity. A couple of days later Amazon reminded me that I had 15 days to send the computer back. I did so and got a replacement. I am generally pleased with the the dv6-722us. I had the same computer with Windows 7. My wife loved it so I gave it to her and bought the new one with Windows 8. To me the Windows 8 operating system is not an improvement. It takes a little getting used to but it is not difficult to learn. Overall this has been a good purchase. If I had not had the terrible experience with the first computer it would been an excellent purchase. Word to the wise, if it doesn't look right to begin with, put it back in the box immediately and send it back.

This is a bad laptop. my spacebar didnt work well, so i looked online and found that the problem was widespread with this model. the keys also dont register, there was an issue with zoom i had to fix, and the curser flies all over. it took 20 minutes to write a paragraph because the curser would jump to mid sentance or it would just fly across the screen and click on things. it would rarely register clicks on the first try. it was just bad. i kept it almost to the end of my 2 week window to return it, but i couldnt make it work right. i am so glad i exchanged it because the one i got instead works like a dream.

I bought the HP Envy dv6-7247cl as a Christmas gift. While updating the installed software and removing the unwanted software (Norton) it had a couple of blue screen reboots but it came back just fine. A couple of days after using it I noticed the top of the keyboard sticking out so I snapped it back into place not sure if it came that way or it popped out from lifting / carrying the laptop. The laptop flexes quite a bit if you lift it from the corner. It has a multi touch pad that is hard for some people to use. You can easily zoom the screen out if you touch two fingers at the same time. After about three months of use it would not start but came back to life the next day. It worked for three more days and then went dead while using it and never came back on. I sent it to HP for warranty work where they replaced the motherboard and some other part. They also told me that the battery was bad and they would replace it as soon as they get some. I got the laptop back but have been waiting two weeks now for the battery. I just have to be close to the outlet to use the computer until the battery comes in. Today my wife noticed that the "V" key had fallen off. I was able to snap it back on. My 10 year old HP laptop hasn't missed a beat. This one won't last that long.

Update: Computer has been running fine since the repair by HP. The battery plus an extra one finally arrived and work fine.

I wanted this laptop as a secondary to my work machine. I use it to VPN into work when I work from home. Hence went with the high processor and RAM. Easy to set up and use. New to Windows 8 but got used to itin a couple of days. Love the laptop so far. Battery life is not great but adequate. Not sure about the beats audio either... I don't have a beats head phone. Sound quality is good though. Love watching movies/videos on its big screen. All in all a very good buy at the price I paid.

I bought this without ever trying which was a gamble, but being familiar with Toshiba I trusted it on its name. I was definitely NOT disappointed! With four gigs of ram (upgradable to eight) and 64bit processing, it outperforms my desktop. While the keys are shiny, they are not cheap, and the screen has a great picture. The Pentium T3400 processor would not be my first choice, nor would the on-board graphics, but it all just works great together! Unlike the Satellite L305D I use at work, the streaming video and speed is much better (as well as the speakers). At around $600, I would recommend this to anyone who wants an excellent laptop made to last you into the future, without breaking your bank!

I keep checking out the Netbooks that come into the hardware lab where I work, looking for something to replace a cheap one I bought for my kids to play with, but they all just seem too small. As a result I've been poking around the high-end of the Netbook spectrum / low end of the Ultra-portable spectrum for something more usable. The Acer Aspire 1410 series does a great job of bridging the gap between small low cost "Netbooks" and more expensive "Ultra-portables" (which is what Acer classes this as). It manages to overcome many of the short comings of Netbooks without getting anywhere near the $1000+ price range of most ultra-portables. It has a few drawbacks, notably material quality: like a lot of Acer products the plastic molding is attractive and the tolerances are tight. However the quality of the plastic is more in line with what you would expect with a Netbook (which is to say it is lower density plastic and more likely to scratch or break). To me it's reasonable that the overall component quality is lower than what I would get if I spent $1000 (display not as nice, finish not as refined, buttons not as responsive, etc...). Still, overall this is a well put together computer with good build quality considering the price. While I didn't end up buying one myself if might be the right fit for you: if you are on a budget and you need a small laptop that can do more than browse web pages this would be a very good choice.

Let's go over the specs:

CPU: The Core 2 ULV SU3500 is a great CPU choice and far more powerful than the Atom CPU found in most Netbooks. This is a single core (as opposed to the two core "Core2 Duo") Ultra Low Voltage cpu running at 1.4GHz. Depending on the exact application this CPU is about 3-6x more powerful than the typical Atom Processor. It also has 3 MB of cache (cache is a form of on-chip high speed memory) vs the Atom's 512 KB. With 6x the cache of the Atom this CPU is going to spend a lot more time running instructions and a lot less time waiting on the memory sub-system. It also helps that the Core 2 ULV SU3500 memory bus is about 25% faster than what you will find on an Atom. The Core2 is technically more power hungry than the Atom but when running applications the difference isn't significant (5 watts for the Core2 vs 1.5 watts for Atom). The main difference happens when in standby or sleep mode where the Atom will use much less power than the Core2 (because the kind of transistors on the Atom "leak" less power than those used on the Core2 when in those modes). So if you need long battery life while carrying your computer around in standby with brief periods of activity you might prefer the Atom based Netbooks (say for sales calls on the road). I think most users will probably prefer the Core2 I know that I do. Update: there may be a dual core version of this coming out soon. It's on the list to arrive where I work but that doesn't mean it will be sold in the US.

MEMORY: 2GB of DDR2 RAM is plenty and the 667Mhz memory speed is good enough (faster notebooks go up to 1066Mhz). This system runs Vista which is more memory hungry than the Windows XP or Linux found on most Netbooks so 2GB, while enough, doesn't go as far as you might think. Still, as long as your aren't planning on doing any really serious gaming 2GB will handle the typical office application with no troubles.

HDD: The 250GB HDD has plenty of storage given that most users don't use more than 50GB. Serious gamers and video encoders will need a lot more space than this.

DISPLAY: The 11.6" 1366x768 screen looks good and is a lot more useable than the 8-10" screens found on most Netbooks. The resolution is much better than what you will find on most Netbooks and it is reasonably bright (200 nits vs 300+ nits on higher end laptop). I passed on this model because the viewing angle is limited (the manufacturer list the viewing angles as 60vert/90horiz compared to 120v/140h on a high end display) and my sons like to sit with me and watch YouTube videos. The limited viewing angles might be a selling point for somebody traveling who would prefer not to share what's on their screen with others. So while Acer clearly saved some money here it's still a good display: unless you need a really high quality LCD I think most people will be pretty happy with this screen (again it's far better than what you'll find in most Netbooks). For those few who care it's made by AU Optronics and I think it's model B116XW01.

GRAPHICS: The Intel Mobile GMA X4500HD graphics won't impress any gamers but if you're running business applications it will do just fine. Update: they loaded Autocad on this thing at work and it wasn't pretty. It might have been a driver issue but the render times were terrible. It's not really a surprise but don't buy this to run your CAD software. Of course for most users this won't be an issue.

AUDIO: notebooks are not known for great speaker sound and this notebook doesn't break from that trend. Again it's better than most Netbooks but not by a lot. Update: With headphones on I found the sound to be fine.

DRIVES: Like most Netbooks and Ultra-portables this has no CD or DVD drive. I recommend buying an external CD Drive. The software industry may start to switch over to USB drives soon (Windows 7 will be sold on USB drives) so this may not be a big deal for much longer. Today it's a pain to not have a CDROM.

BATTERY: The 6 cell battery is perfect for this notebook (thanks to the low power components). This notebook is probably too small for an 8 cell to fit cleanly but the 4 cell found in most Netbooks just isn't adequate, even for an Atom CPU. This 6 cell battery will provide about 3-5 hours of real use though with aggressive power saving modes you can get over six hours. Update: we have two of these in our hardware lab and it was just pointed it out to me that one (which came pre-release) had a higher capacity battery than the release version (5600mAH vs. 4400mAH). I've adjusted my battery life numbers down to reflect the release version. Interestingly the non-US version of this laptop has the higher capacity battery. I can only assume Acer was trying to bring the price down to compete in the tight US netbook market.

WEIGHT: Coming in a 3.1 lbs this is tiny bit heavier than the typical Netbook but not by much (Netbooks will range from 2-3lbs). Most regular notebooks are 6-8 lbs.

WIRELESS: The usual Intel 5100 A/G/N supports the most common standards ("A" and "G") along with the new "N" standard. You should have no trouble connecting to wireless networks. This is pretty standard though a few laptops will support 3G out of the box.

In short: while this notebook isn't perfect it is well built and unlike most Netbooks, actually has a decent CPU. It's small and light but big enough that you can actually use it. If you've got 1K-2K to spend you can get a better Ultra-Portable notebook (I'm partial to Sony's and Apple's offerings in that segment) but in this price range there isn't much competition.

Oh I should note that while this model is dark blue, Acer makes this in two other colors you can buy:

Also if you're outside the US this might be sold as the "Acer Timeline 1810T" locally and may have slightly different specs (such as a better battery).

This laptop is just by far the best laptop for the overall features.

Pros:

1. Very thin and light. Just a bit bigger than today's netbooks

2. Much faster than Atom based netbooks

3. Bright and large screen with true HD aspect ratio. Very useful resolution.

4. 4g upgradeable memory cap.

5. Great webcam and good microphone

(Added on 8/29/2009) Even though the movies are cached all the way, the CPU hits 100% with Flash based HD movies. SD movies are just fine. I can kind of watch HD Flash movies better with this laptop than my Atom netbook though.

5. My wish for the laptop design to be somewhat like macbook or HP Mini series.

6. I thought the CPU had hyper-threading like Atom. Task manager shows only one thread. I know it is "solo", but Atom shows two threads.

(Added on 8/29/2009) The CPU does not have HT (Hyperthreading). I had some wrong info there. Even without the HT, this little laptop performs much faster than my Atom netbook.

Although I listed cons, they are very least items that I wish for. Of course, It does not perform like Intel i7 CPU based desktops. However, for the size and usability, this is a champ of all laptops and desktop PCs I have ever owned. I will use the i7 desktop for Video and photo editing. That may be only 5% of all my computer usage. The rest, 95% of tasks can be done with this little laptop for me. I cannot talk about the durability yet, but it seems to be well built. Anyway, this is a great laptop with very reasonable price tag!

1. Usual Vista tune ups like turning off Aero and other graphic intensive features.

2. Removed many pre-installed apps mainly Office trial and Anti-virus software.

1. HDMI out to HD TV

1080p resolution worked perfect including sound with not much config. 1080 resolution gets everything too small to read for my setup. I switched to 720p. My TV does not adjust automatically, so I had to adjust the size using Intel TV wizard software (This app cannot be used with Dual monitor config. Switching to Digital TV only mode enables it.). I adjusted using the app to 720p. The app works, but the screen refreshes every time the adjustment button was clicked, I had to press the adjustment button very slowly and patiently. When I clicked too fast, the app froze with 100% CPU for a long time like 10 min. I had to restart. Other than that all worked perfect!

2. Web cam and digital microphone using Skype

I wanted a small laptop with webcam, so I can put it right next to my baby and show her to my parents in Japan via Skype. My other netbook kind of worked, but in low light situation, the video was so dark that they could see only my white eyes. Mic was also giving them echo. When I tried with this laptop, it was literary day and night. This laptop webcam is optimized for low light. They could see my baby clearly. The mic was clear and no echo. The only minor issue is that the image is bit white tinted with default setting. My wife thought I was smoking... haha. I had to tweak a bit in config. Nonetheless, the webcam and mic worked great for Skype. FYI: It does not perform like high resolution after market webcams, but the built-in webcam satisfies my needs very well.

I purchased this laptop after a fair amount of research. I know that I wanted a smaller, portable laptop that we would use for general activities like web surfing, e-mail and the basics. This laptop is packed with an impressive set of specs. The screen was bright and sharp, it loaded up quickly and was quiet a cool running. However, I ended up returning it for a refund because after about a week of use, the touchpad started to become next to impossible to use. It was twitchy from the beginning. When I viewed web sites, it would occasional cause the brower's back button to activate, font sizes to increase or decrease and it almost acted like it had a mind of its own. Despite that we were planning to live with it but when it because next to impossible to use the touch pad, we returned it and will look for a slightly larger screen size. The cover was nice but showed finger prints immediately. Still a great machine for the price and wonderful features but not the right one for me.

This notebook is one of those instances when you say to yourself, "Wow, it is as good as I expected, and more."

I have refrained from buying a netbook because the low resolution and poor performance prevents me from multi-tab web browsing, not to mention continuous scrolling with Office documents. When I first saw this notebook, I was very excited because it has something the older generation netbooks have lacked:

Decent resolution (1366x768)

Decent performance

Even better battery life (6 hours)

Except, it actually exceeded my expectation.

LCD Screen: Very sharp, and very bright. I am amazed that Acer can squeeze 1366x768 into an 11.6 inch screen, and still keep it so sharp and clear. It is very comfortable to view, and I do not feel any different from viewing my old 14 inch LCD.

Performance: In terms of word processing, web surfing and installing software, it has been as smooth as my old dual-core laptop. This notebook has upgraded the CPU and chipset from the previous generation netbook, which contributes to the performance I am seeing.

Keyboard/touchpad: It's full size keyboard, and it's comfortable to type on. I am still trying to get used to some of the key placement, and the lack of home/end buttons. But it's definitely no worse than my other laptop's keyboard. Acer has also learned the lesson from Aspire 751h, so the touchpad is centered to the touch-typing keyboard, and has two buttons. However, the touchpad edge is difficult to distinguish.

Battery: From what I read, one Acer hour is usually shorter than one Asus hour. This notebook has proven me wrong. I run it on high performance mode, and it still gives me about 6 hours of battery life. Running company VPN and remote desktop seems to reduce it to about 5 hours.

Size: While slightly bigger than the prev-gen netbooks, I don't feel it's bulkier. At 3 lb, it's very light, but can still stand to lose some weight.

Temperature: It doesn't heat up much, you can use it on your lap the whole day.

Other Pros: 250 GB HDD, 2 GB RAM, 1 Gb LAN, 802.11n, webcam, microphone, no-latch lid

Cons:

Lack of separate Home/End buttons. Unfortunately I think most netbooks have to make this sacrifice.

Battery charging is slow (I estimate about 4 hours). On the flip side, the charger is small and light.

Still requires a fan to dissipate heat, albeit quiet.

Others: lacks bluetooth

As I said, the moment I started using it, all I could say was "Wow". I could not believe Acer could come out with something that outshines Asus (and the rest of the computer industry). For all the laptops I have owned (5), none of them have impressed me as much as this one does.

Update 2009-09-07:

I went on a business trip right after getting this laptop. It's proven to be very mobile. I charge the laptop at night, and take it to work with me in the morning, without the charger. The keyboard feels very natural, and overall work is smooth sailing.

At night I use this laptop to play demo games and watch a few videos (I had the foresight to rip a few ISOs). Most DVDs play great, but there was one that does not play smoothly, so I guess it depends on the DVD encoding.

Overall love this laptop's portability. The battery life ensures that the laptop is always ready when I need to use it.

After using the Acer 1410 for a while now, I feel compelled to write a review.

USAGE: I am college student who takes meticulous notes via OneNote. I have been writing my term papers using Word 2007 on the 1410 and I also find myself using the internet as a supplement to my classes. In short, I use the 1410 constantly. .

SCREEN: The 11.6" inch wide screen is large enough to be usable without long term eye strain, but still small enough to allow the overall size of the laptop to be less than my 5-Star One Subject Notebook! Even though it is a glossy screen, I have not encountered any scenario where it was unusable. Even under the bright fluorescent lights above my desk, the screen is crisp and clear. I imagine most people who find it hard to see don't know how to tilt the lid so the refracted light isn't shining in their eyes.

WEIGHT & SIZE: The overall dimensions of the 1410 are just a fraction longer than a piece of standard paper and also a fraction narrower. As I stated in the screen section, it is smaller in length and width than my notebook. It is also almost as thin as my 5-Star Three Subject Notebook. It weighs less than most of my text books. I find there is no extra strain to carry this in my backpack.

KEYBOARD: The keys are easy to press, however they are not raised much. I found it at first to be a tad difficult to touch type. But, I have since mastered that skill on the 1410. I am torn over the need for the keys to be raised more and the fact that the overall keyboard uses clean and sleek lines. The actual placements of the keys is just fine.

TRACKPAD: I don't use it. I prefer to use a mouse.

PERFORMANCE: I didn't bother to boot into Vista. Instead, I opted to install Windows 7 from a USB thumbdrive. I wiped both partitions and reformatted upon install. From start to finish it took less than 20 minutes, almost completely unattended. After shutting down the Media Player Network Sharing Service, and the Microsoft Search/Indexer Service, the 1410 breezes through everything. Not to sound over dramatic, but it is fast enough that it could easily serve as a desktop replacement for common usages. Obviously you can't do Photoshop, CAD, or 3D Modeling with the 1410, but for most usage, it will perform quite well!

BATTERY: I don't know. I have not had to run on battery yet. My classrooms have all been fitted with more than enough convenient outlets.

EXTRA: I noticed that there is a little led indicator nestled between the wifi, battery and screen ones at the bottom left. It is an indicator for Bluetooth! This would lead me to believe that this feature could be added at a later date with an upgrade.

SUMMARY: MY brother-in-law has one of those run of the mill Netbooks. You know the type: 10" 1GB Memory Atom processor, etc. He let me borrow it while I was "shopping". After using it, I was very much turned off of the Netbooks. They were almost too tiny with no viewing room and worst of all.... uber slow. I almost decided to buy a full size laptop. However, after coming across the 1410, I decided to take a chance. I had hoped it would be a spirited machine that wouldn't leave me frustrated. But I admit, I was skeptical that it wouldn't be much better than the typical Netbook. Needless to say I was quite surprised that the 1410 isn't just a little bit better, but a whole lot better! I guess thats the true advantage of being able to do 4 calculation per cycle as opposed to just 2!

SUMMARY: Buy it. It is beyond worth it, if you are wanting a faster, easier to read, Netbook.

Everything was as advertised, except the hard drive was larger (not complaining!). Shipped quickly. It looks almost brand new. Everything works. Very good battery life. Faster than I expected with only 2MB of RAM. I figured I'd buy more RAM given that it's Windows 7, but I probably won't need to. Great value for the price.

For only $269.99 this is a great computer that does everything you need it to do. Have in mind that the flashplayer doesn't work until you download it. This is very easy since links to download automatically appear.

I was hesitant to buy a refurbished product but so far I'm very happy with the deal I got (about $225) for the Dell Latitude D630. The top was a little scratched and the corner of the lid has a little piece broken off of it but I don't really mind. I didn't try using the DVD player for a few weeks and when I did, discovered it wasn't working. I contacted the seller today who promptly decided to send me a replacement drive. The included software is of questionable value. I've had a lot of compatibility issues b/t Microsoft Office and the installed Apache Open Office. Also, the installed security software is only good for 30 days so you'll need to purchase or see if you can find a decent free one. Still, I'm quite happy with this purchase and the integrity of the seller.

This is the second refurbished laptop I have purchased from Tampa Laptops in the last six months, and I could not be more pleased. Both seemed practically new when they arrived, and both have performed perfectly.

I prefer the faster 2 GHz laptop, and it is definitely worth the $25 more that I paid for it, but my slower 1.6 GHz laptop will be cooler and probably have a longer life as a result. It is always a trade-off.

Both of my laptops came upgraded with system 7 and this is something I recommend to anyone interested in getting a refurbished computer.

Refurbished seems to me, to be a much better choice than used. The value and quality has been excellent, and I highly recommend Tampa Laptops, Dell Latitude Laptops and refurbished computers in general.

I've been searching and researching for a good Laptop for awhile now and I had a few requirements for it to meet my needs and truly replace my desktop.

1. The laptop had to have a real video card in it as the Intel HD 4000 wasn't going to cut it replacing my GT 650 Desktop GPU.

2. I wanted a backlit keyboard so I could use it in any lighting condition without issue.

3. It had to be a 1080P screen or higher and I wanted a 15" to 17" and obviously, the larger the better (not keeping the desktop or the monitor).

4. Selling my Desktop had to pay for almost half of it.

In my research I wavered back and forth over buying the Lenovo Y500 with Dual GT 650 GPUs and decided against that as Lenovo doesn't have the highest build quality. Then I looked at a 17.3" Acer V3-771G with a GT730 GPU and Core i5 CPU but, the screen was only 720P and the keyboard wasn't backlit so, even though the $700 price tag was attractive, it wasn't really suitable for my needs.

Finally, I settled on paying the extra money for the G75VW-BHI7N07 and I'll elaborate as to why below.

PROCESSING POWER

I really wanted the laptop to have at least a quad core CPU but, given that GPUs are the really stars of the modern PC, I was okay with settling for a dual core I7. This was okay in 2 of the models (Y500 and G75VW) because they were at least an i7 and both were Quad Core CPUs and both were using the 3630QM model so that was a wash.

Only the Acer didn't measure up here.

GRAPHIC PROCESSING POWER

One of the things I do with my desktop is Bluray Ripping and another is Gaming... Both of these functions would only be satisfied by a solid GPU.

With the Y500 there was no doubt that the Dual GT 650 SLI would handle my needs and honestly, it is better than the GTX 660M by a good 20 to 25 percent but, with that performance also comes heat.

With the GTX 660M in the G75, it wasn't the fastest GPU but, watching reviews it did the job quite well and it ran cooler with less enegry than the Y500 solution. Essentially, this likely improves the longevity of the laptop and people want a reliably machine.

Again, the ACER V3-771 didn't measure up as the GT730 was the worst performer on the bunch and only about 40% improvement over the Intel HD 4000.

KEYBOARD AND TRACKPAD

The Acer was said to be a very comfortable option for the keyboard and the trackpad was said to be very reliable so, this is certainly a strength for the system but, it lacked back lighting and that was one of my requirements so this laptop was really losing its luster.

The G75VW was said to have the best keyboard of the bunch with its firm chicklet styling and 3 levels of back light to satisfy pretty much any need. The track pad has been decent but, a little finicky at times but, still pretty good over all.

The Y500 had many complaints about the track pad that were said to have been fixed early in 2013 and while the keyboard had a cool red glow to the back light, the keyboard is a little too spongy for my taste and this is a build quality issues so, it is knock against the Lenovo.

SCREEN

The screen on the Acer again, didn't quite measure up as it had a max resolution of 1600x900 so my 1080P was out the window but, it probably allowed the GT 730M to keep up given the reduced resolution.

The screen on the Y500 is only 15.6" but, it is 1080P. The biggest issue with this display are viewing angles that alter the clarity of the image when not looking at it straight on. Over all, it wasn't a bad option.

The G75VW on the other hand has a really vibrant and colorful LED backlit screen that is 1080P and is a Matte (Anti-Glare) screen which more than does the trick. The viewing angles only suffer minimal distortion beyond 40 degrees so you're okay to really work on the laptop for day to day usage. This was by far the best option of the three screens.

AESTHETICS

Obviously, the Acer is proving that it isn't even in the same class as the other two and this area isn't really going to win any medals. Basically, it is a good solid laptop for the lower mid range of laptops.

The Y500 certainly packs a ton of options and features both Bluetooth and SLI which the G75VW has neither. This is still a very strong competitor but, upgrading the laptop isn't very flexible.

The G75VW has one very big advantage here because, the GPU is actually on an MXM Card so theoretically, the GPU and CPU as well as the hard drives and wireless card or DVD RW can all be upgraded. This is actually very cool because it might be possible to extend the life of the laptop with upgrades later on down the line.

BUILD QUALITY

The Acer is a decent and improving build but, it isn't really top of the line here so, yeah, this machine is about out of gas.

The Y500 has a disadvantage in that my company uses Lenovo and far too many of those laptops break so, I cannot imagine using a consumer line would be much better in build quality and I didn't want to risk it.

The G75VW's design and build quality are excellent and the cooling system is known for being the best in any laptop design. Looking under the hood reveals some really intelligent design decisions and some very impressive engineering. In short, this is clearly the winner here.

COOLING

Cooling is a big deal because, the cooler your laptop runs, the more longevity it has, and the better it performs.

Obviously the Acer doesn't generate the heat of the other laptops as it isn't running the same high end hardware so, it should last awhile if the build quality holds up.

The Lenovo runs dual 650M GPUs in SLI mode and this results in operating temps a good 50% or higher than the G75VW. Also, the main cooling vent for the Lenovo is on the bottom of the laptop and although people say it does fairly well, it is still subject to the main problems that other laptops have.

Now the ASUS G75VW features a revolutionary split cooling system (one fan for the GPU and one for the CPU, spread over opposite ends of the laptop) much like the MacBook Pro of recent years but, it goes one step further by venting the heat out the back and more upward so, you can actually use this Laptop on a blanket and it will not get much hotter than on a flat surface. Another note, the laptop is designed to keep the CPU and GPU running extremely cool even under heavy loads. In short, the life of this beauty should be very long.

CONCLUSION

The Acer just didn't cut it even though it is still a quality laptop, it just didn't meet my needs.

The Y500 was very tempting but, the 15.6" screen and my history of dealing with newer Lenovo laptops really pushed this closer to the ACER than the G75vw.

The G75VW has way too much going for it and the short comings have strengths as well. I would like to have had bluetooth but, the laptop doesn't feature it and adding it is actually pretty simple with a usb dongle.

Honestly, I considered a MacBook Pro as well but, that was 2x the price for less performance than the Y500 and the and the G75VW.

Upon receiving this laptop I added an additional 8GB of RAM and an additional 1TB hard drive for data.

I love the initial setup. No bloatware. My first impression upon opening the box was wow, this thing is a beast. It's quite heavy and feels far more sturdily constructed than the HP DV-7 I'm replacing. The exterior has a textured rubberized coating that looks really cool, though is a bit of a headache when putting it into my backpack for travel because of how grippy the rubber is so it doesn't slide in smoothly like another smooth exterior laptop would. Very minor issue. And that and the overall weight are literally the only criticism I can offer.

I love the 2nd hard drive bay. I love the HUGE capacity for RAM ships with 8GB and has two easily accessible slots for more. I love that I can open this up and clean out the fan filters. The fans are whisper quiet even when running fairly hard. Screen is crisp and clear, and the video is the best I've seen on a laptop. I haven't yet bench marked mine, but I'm expecting pretty impressive numbers.

Keyboard is very comfortable for typing offers no flex at all. Back lit keys is a nice option as well. The only thing I think I'd add is a physical button above the touch pad to turn it off for when I'm doing a lot of typing. My hand regularly brushes the pad and it is incredibly sensitive.

Now that I've got it set up and adapted a bit, I do actually like Windows 8 that it ships with. Takes some getting used to, and with a bit of modding I've managed to make it look more like the Win7 that I'm more familiar with.

The integrated camera is quite clear and the microphone(s) pick up sound very well for things like Skype.

All in all I think this is a great deal for a whole lot of laptop!

When I was doing my research to get the most our of a laptop for the money I saw this computer and knew it was the one I wanted. I read that the computer had Bluetooth only to find out to my disappointment this unit does not. Some models do not have Bluetooth :(. The computer itself is awesome and I have to say this laptop remains cool to the touch even on the bottom and when playing Skyrim. It was also disappointing to see that the ROC Gaming mouse was not included which I also read was included but then after reading some other reviews, I found they discontinued providing the mouse even though the drivers and app is installed. Those are the only two issues I have found. It took some time to get used to WIN 8 without a touch screen, but I am getting around fine after two weeks of owning this awesome machine. The computer starts up fast and is so quiet. The spec for this affordable laptop will play a game like Skyrim under High settings so enjoy that gamers. All in all I wished it had the mouse and Bluetooth that I thought I was getting but I can purchase a mouse so the Bluetooth is my only issue.

Fantastic laptop. I like almost everything about this laptop. It has an Intel i7 processor and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 660M graphics chip. The only thing I don't like that much is it currently has Windows 8. Hopefully 8.1 will be better. Also if your looking for a light/slim laptop, then this one won't be for you. It has a 17.3 inch display and definitely isn't light but I like that. I haven't yet seen a light/slim laptop that had the speed and power I require.
